Use the shoulder trigger for the Arcana Whip grapple: R2 on PS5, RT on Xbox, and ZR on Switch. The grapple can latch onto anchors or enemies, then lead into an instant attack or a traversal swing. Keep dodge/slide on its documented face button, and follow the on-screen weapon prompt for the ordinary attack because its exact button is not officially published in the available documentation.
If trigger travel causes missed timings or discomfort, use the game’s basic remapping support to move grapple to a shorter-travel shoulder input or a compatible rear paddle. Treat that as an ergonomic choice, not a developer-mandated competitive layout.
Quick answer: the best starting layout
The default shoulder-trigger placement is the strongest starting point for whip combat because it lets your left stick remain dedicated to movement and aiming while your right hand initiates the grapple. On the documented console layouts, the Arcana Whip grapple is R2 on PlayStation 5, RT on Xbox, and ZR on Nintendo Switch.
That input is not merely a hook for traversal. It can attach to an anchor or an enemy and chain into an instant attack. The same control therefore appears during exploration, aerial engagements, and close-range combat. A layout that makes the trigger easy to press without moving your thumb away from the camera or movement controls is more useful than one optimized only for a single attack.

Keep dodge/slide on its documented face button so it remains available while you approach a grapple target. A double tap produces Rose’s backward flip. Keep spell and heal on separate inputs as well; both actions interact with the game’s mana or healing systems and should not be hidden behind the same control.
The ordinary weapon-attack button is not officially published in the material available for this game. Some standard-layout guides infer Square on PlayStation, but that inference is unverified. Use the prompt shown by the game and do not assume the same attack button on every platform.

Why the grapple belongs on a trigger
Movement and aiming stay on the left stick
The grapple often starts while you are lining up an enemy or an anchor. Leaving movement and aim on the left stick means you can make that approach without lifting a thumb from the controls that position Rose. A face-button grapple can work, but it usually asks the same thumb to alternate rapidly between camera or aim control and the grapple input.
One control serves combat and traversal
The Arcana Whip is designed as a combined traversal and attack tool. It can latch onto an anchor for a swing or attach to an enemy for a pull that leads into an attack. A trigger gives this frequently used action a consistent location in both contexts, reducing the need to remember separate exploration and combat layouts.
Trigger travel is the main trade-off
R2, RT, and ZR have more travel than many face buttons. That travel is comfortable for players who prefer an analog-feeling press, but it can make a short timing window feel less immediate. If you regularly reach the target but fail to register the follow-up, adjust your pressing technique before changing the entire layout: use a short, deliberate press and release rather than holding the trigger or mashing it.

How to perform a grapple-to-attack sequence
- Choose a target. Aim at an enemy or visible anchor and wait until the game recognizes the target. The grapple is useful only when a valid latch point is selected.
- Press the grapple trigger once. Use R2, RT, or ZR according to your platform. Avoid repeated presses while the character is still connecting; extra inputs can obscure the moment at which the latch succeeds.
- Read the resulting state. A successful latch may pull Rose toward an enemy, begin a swing, or place her in a position from which an attack can be chained. The animation and prompt tell you which state you entered.
- Use the ordinary attack input when prompted. The exact weapon-attack button is not confirmed by the published mappings, so follow the button shown on screen or the weapon behavior in your game. Do not substitute an assumed Square, X, A, or B input without checking.
- Return to movement immediately. After the hit or swing, use the left stick to choose the next landing position and keep the dodge control available for an incoming attack.
The first-party hands-on description specifically says the grapple can be chained into an instant attack or a traversal swing. That means the same trigger press can lead to different follow-ups depending on what you latched onto and where the character is in the animation.
Timing the whip pull without mashing
Use a deliberate two-beat rhythm
Think of the sequence as latch, then follow up. Press the grapple once, observe the connection, and then make the ordinary attack input when the prompt or animation calls for it. Holding the trigger through the entire sequence can make it harder to distinguish a new grapple from a follow-up attack.
Why the timing may feel early
PC Gamer observed that the whip-pull attack can feel as though its timing is set earlier than expected. That is a reviewer observation, not a measured input-lag result, so it should not be treated as a universal frame count. If your follow-up misses, begin the attack input slightly sooner after the latch rather than waiting for the character to finish the pull.
Practice on airborne enemies
Airborne targets give you a clear visual cue and a repeatable distance. Practice selecting the target, pressing the grapple once, and following with the attack input while the enemy is still above you. GamesRadar highlighted a related pattern: grappling aerial enemies and then falling to smash enemies below. The exercise teaches you to treat vertical position as part of the attack rather than waiting for a conventional ground combo.
Separate a missed latch from a missed attack
- If no connection occurs, improve target selection or your initial trigger press; the follow-up input cannot succeed without a latch.
- If Rose connects but no attack occurs, your grapple timing worked and the ordinary attack input was late, early, or incorrect for your layout.
- If Rose swings instead of attacking, you selected an anchor or entered a traversal state. Use the movement controls to complete the swing, then re-engage an enemy.
Recommended layouts for different players
Default trigger layout
Keep grapple on R2, RT, or ZR, dodge/slide on the documented face button, spell on its documented upper face button, and heal on the separate shoulder input. This is the best baseline for a new player because it preserves the relationships described in the game’s first-party control explanation and requires no remapping.

Shorter-travel shoulder layout
If the trigger feels slow or your hand tires from repeated full pulls, move grapple to another shoulder input with shorter travel, provided the game and controller allow it. This can make the latch easier to tap while leaving your thumbs on movement and aim. Keep dodge where you can double-tap it reliably; moving dodge to an awkward location can undermine the backward flip even if grapples become faster.

Rear-paddle layout
A controller with rear paddles can place grapple on a paddle under your middle or ring finger. This is useful when trigger travel aggravates a joint or when you want to press grapple without changing your thumb position. The paddle is an accessibility and comfort option, not a guaranteed performance advantage. Configure only the grapple first, test it in a safe area, and then decide whether any other action needs relocation.
Low-movement or one-handed adaptations
Basic remapping can also help players who cannot comfortably reach the default shoulder trigger. Prioritize a location that can be pressed repeatedly without stretching the hand. Keep dodge, spell, and heal on distinct controls so you do not create accidental resource use while trying to escape or grapple.
Keeping dodge, spell, and heal usable during whip combat
Dodge and slide
The documented dodge/slide input is also the input for a double-tap backward flip. Because grapple approaches often place Rose near an enemy, this escape should remain reachable without releasing movement. Test two quick presses at different distances from an enemy and make sure your remap does not turn the second press into an unintended grapple.

Spell
Spell is mapped separately from grapple and dodge on the documented layouts. Preserve that separation. A spell may consume or depend on the game’s mana system, so placing it next to a frequently pressed trigger can lead to accidental use during repeated grapple attempts.
Heal
Heal has its own input on each platform map. Keep it away from the grapple if possible, especially if your controller’s shoulder buttons are close together. The purpose is not to make healing slower; it is to prevent an emergency heal from being replaced by a grapple or a grapple from consuming a healing action.
Platform-specific setup advice
PlayStation 5
Start with R2 for Arcana Whip, Circle for dodge/slide, Triangle for spell, and L1 for heal. The PlayStation Blog hands-on report by Corey Brotherson, published July 17, 2026, describes Circle’s double-tap backward flip and the R2 grapple’s ability to chain into an instant attack or traversal swing. Use that arrangement to learn the intended rhythm before considering a remap.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
When practicing, keep your index finger resting lightly on R2 rather than gripping it fully. A light tap makes it easier to distinguish a new grapple from the attack that follows. If the trigger’s travel still causes misses, move only grapple to a shorter-travel shoulder control or rear paddle and leave the other actions unchanged while you test.
Xbox
The cross-platform mapping guide reports RT for grapple, B for dodge/slide, Y for spell, and LB for heal. Xbox players should verify each action against the in-game prompt because the ordinary weapon attack is not officially published and because platform updates can alter labels.
RT is a natural choice when you want the right thumb to remain on movement or aim. If the press feels too deep, a shorter-travel shoulder input or rear paddle can provide a more immediate tap. Preserve B for the double-tap escape if you can reach it without releasing movement.
Nintendo Switch
The reported Switch equivalents are ZR for grapple, B for dodge/slide, X for spell, and L for heal. ZR’s trigger travel can feel different depending on whether you are using Joy-Con controls, a handheld configuration, or a separate controller. Test the press in the configuration you actually use for play rather than assuming that a layout comfortable on another pad will feel identical.
Because the Switch guide’s ordinary attack mapping is not confirmed, rely on the prompt for that follow-up. If handheld reach is difficult, basic remapping can move grapple to a control that does not require a thumb to leave movement.

- Record the default layout before changing anything so you can restore it.
- Remap grapple alone first. A single-variable change makes it clear whether timing or comfort improved.
- Test a latch, an enemy pull, a traversal swing, a dodge double tap, a spell cast, and a heal.
- Check that the new button does not conflict with a system-level controller shortcut or another in-game action.
- Save the profile and repeat the test after restarting the game if the interface offers separate per-game and global profiles.
If your copy exposes fewer options than the guide describes, use the platform’s own controller accessibility settings where available, then verify every action in game. Do not assume that a remap on one console automatically transfers to another.
Diagnosing common whip problems
“The grapple does nothing.”
- Confirm that the target is a valid anchor or enemy and that the game is showing a latch opportunity.
- Press the documented trigger once instead of holding it or rapidly tapping it.
- Check whether a remap profile moved grapple to another input.
- Try the default profile again to rule out a conflicting custom assignment.
“I connect, but the attack misses.”
The grapple and ordinary weapon attack are separate stages. Wait for the connection cue, then use the attack button shown by the prompt. Because the official sources do not name that button, an assumed standard layout may be the cause. If the input is correct, try making the follow-up slightly earlier; the whip-pull timing has been described as feeling early by a reviewer.
“I swing when I meant to attack.”
You probably latched onto an anchor or entered a traversal state rather than selecting an enemy. Adjust your aim before pressing grapple and watch the target response. The swing is an intended use of the Arcana Whip, not a failed attack animation.

Check whether your custom layout placed both actions on adjacent or overlapping controls. Restore dodge/slide to its documented face button or choose a remap that still permits two quick presses for the backward flip.
“My hand hurts during repeated pulls.”
Use a shorter-travel shoulder input or rear paddle if supported, reduce the force of each press, and take breaks. The goal is a repeatable input that does not cause strain; there is no established competitive setting that requires a particular trigger or paddle.
A practical practice routine
- Baseline check: In a safe area, verify grapple, dodge/slide, spell, and heal one at a time. Do not change settings until every default action is known.
- Target selection: Approach a stationary anchor and perform five single grapple presses. Concentrate on a clean latch without follow-up mashing.
- Enemy pull: Repeat against a grounded enemy, adding the ordinary attack only after the connection cue appears.
- Aerial timing: Practice on airborne enemies and vary the delay between latch and attack until the follow-up consistently lands.
- Escape integration: After each attack, perform the dodge double tap. This confirms that your hand can alternate between offense and the backward flip.
- Resource separation: Cast one spell and perform one heal after a grapple sequence. Confirm that the remap has not placed either resource action where an accidental press is likely.
- Remap comparison: If the trigger is uncomfortable, repeat the same drill with a shorter-travel shoulder input or rear paddle. Keep the layout that reduces errors and strain, not the one that merely feels faster in the first minute.
What the whip is designed to do
The control scheme reflects a broader combat idea: the Arcana Whip is not presented as a conventional stand-alone primary attack. It is a connector between Rose, an enemy, and the environment. The first-party hands-on emphasizes instant attack chains and traversal swings, while GamesRadar’s account of grappling aerial enemies and dropping onto enemies below shows how vertical movement can become part of the damage pattern.
Evil Empire creative director Emmanuel Nouaille described the team as focused on combat and using that focus to add something new to the genre. That context explains why the grapple deserves a dedicated, easily repeatable input rather than being buried behind a rarely used menu command.
Version and evidence limits
The strongest evidence for the PS5 controls comes from a first-party hands-on report dated July 17, 2026. Xbox and Switch equivalents, along with the basic remapping claim, come from a current community guide. The ordinary weapon-attack mapping, a complete keyboard layout, regional physical editions, and any platform-specific changes after a patch are not established here.
Recheck the control screen after updates, especially if a patch changes prompts or adds an accessibility option. Keep a note of your preferred remap so you can restore it if a profile resets. When documentation and the game interface disagree, the prompt shown by your installed version is the authoritative instruction for that session.
