Start with the documented default layout, then change only the inputs that improve reach and comfort. On PS5, keep movement on the left stick or D-pad, jump on Cross, dodge on Circle, attack on Square, Arcane Whip on R2, Holy Light/parry on L2, interact on R1, heal on L1, and observe on the right stick. On PC, the standard keyboard layout uses W/A/S/D, Space, Shift, left mouse, R, right mouse, C, and held X. Turn off vibration, adaptive triggers, motion, or other sensory effects independently if they distract you. There is no conventional Easy selector; Gameplay > Custom Mode provides granular assistance, but iTechGuides reports that enabling it can make some achievements unobtainable.

Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse launched October 15, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. The recommendations below use the controls documented for the game and the PS5 accessibility information published by Sony/PlayStation. Menu names and feature availability can differ by platform.

Why your layout matters in Belmont’s Curse

The game is built around precise platforming, fast hand-eye coordination, and cautious timing. TechRadar’s review describes precision and hesitation as part of making successful moves, while GamesRadar’s Serena Cherry notes that the sprawling map, patterns, cryptic clues, characters, and hidden key items can keep your attention divided. TechRadar also reports that deaths can reset substantial progress. Those demands make a reachable, predictable control scheme more valuable than chasing a particular controller brand.

Evaluate any setup on four practical measures:

  • Reach: Can you jump, dodge, attack, whip, parry, and heal without taking your thumb or fingers away from movement?
  • Precision: Can you make small platforming corrections and press parry at the right moment?
  • Sensory load: Do vibration, adaptive triggers, screen effects, or loud channels obscure useful cues?
  • Progress rules: Will the assistance you choose affect achievement eligibility?

A controller with a comfortable layout is usually a better choice than one with more features if it lets you perform frequent actions consistently.

Best PS5 controller setup

Use the standard PlayStation-position layout first

The documented PS5 actions are:

Action Default input Why to keep it predictable
Move Left stick Continuous movement and small corrections
Jump Cross Frequent platforming input
Dodge Circle Quick defensive response
Attack Square Primary close-range action
Spell Triangle Separate from the attack button
Arcane Whip R2 Reachable with the right index finger while the thumb stays on movement or camera control
Holy Light/parry L2 Easy to hold or tap with the left index finger
Interact R1 Separate from attack and dodge
Heal L1 Reachable without moving the right thumb
Observe Right stick Leaves the face buttons available for combat

This arrangement keeps the most time-sensitive actions on the face buttons and shoulder controls. It is an editorial recommendation, not a developer-mandated competitive layout.

Choose the left stick or D-pad by the kind of movement you make

Use the left stick if you prefer continuous movement and analog control. Try the D-pad if its discrete taps make short ledge adjustments cleaner. Spend a few minutes in a safe area testing both; the better choice is the one that produces fewer accidental walks, slips, or overcorrections. Do not change several movement and combat inputs at once, or you will not know which change helped.

Keep frequent actions reachable

Jump, dodge, attack, whip, parry, and heal should be usable without releasing movement. If a remap places one of these on a control that requires a hand reposition, it may feel fine in exploration but fail during a platforming or boss sequence. Change one control, test it under pressure, and retain the default for everything that already feels natural.

Best PC keyboard and mouse setup

Documented keyboard defaults

Action Default input Adjustment guidance
Move W/A/S/D Keep movement clustered under the left hand
Jump Space Large key for repeated taps
Dodge Shift Near the movement cluster
Attack Left mouse button Primary mouse action
Cast spell R Close to movement, but move it if repeated presses strain your hand
Arcane Whip Right mouse button Separate mouse action
Holy Light/parry C Accessible from the left hand
Heal Hold X Requires a held input rather than a tap

These defaults are a sound starting point when your keyboard and mouse are close to standard PC positions. Rebind any action that forces your hand away from W/A/S/D or is difficult to press repeatedly. A layout that looks efficient on paper is not useful if it causes missed jumps or delayed parries.

Practical PC remap principles

  • Keep movement on one compact cluster; avoid placing a combat action on a key that requires reaching across the keyboard.
  • Reserve a large, easy-to-find key for jump and a nearby key for dodge.
  • Put parry and heal where you can press them while maintaining directional control.
  • If mouse buttons cause accidental inputs, move whip or attack to a keyboard key and test the change in a low-risk area.
  • Use a held key for heal only if you can maintain the hold reliably; otherwise choose a remap that reduces fatigue, if the game accepts it.

Controller versus keyboard: which is better?

Neither input method has a documented success-rate advantage. Choose based on the four practical axes rather than brand or price. A DualSense Wireless Controller is the natural PS5 choice because the documented layout, trigger effects, vibration controls, and remapping options are designed around it. On PC, a standard gaming keyboard and mouse are sufficient for the listed bindings; a specialty keypad is optional, not a requirement.

Setup Strength Potential drawback Best test
DualSense, left stick Analog movement and familiar face buttons Small corrections may feel less exact for some players Repeat short jumps and directional stops
DualSense, D-pad Discrete taps for deliberate positioning Less natural for continuous travel Traverse a mixed platforming section
Keyboard and mouse defaults Clear separation of movement, mouse attacks, and modifier keys Held X healing or distant keys can fatigue a hand Practice dodge, parry, and heal while moving
Remapped keyboard Can place every frequent action in a compact reach Conflicts are easy to create Change one binding and verify it before changing another

There is no need to buy an adaptive or remappable controller solely to play the game. Those categories may help a player with a particular reach or fatigue issue, but the available documentation does not establish a Belmont’s Curse-specific performance benefit or a required accessory.

From the main menu

  1. Choose Settings from the main menu.
  2. Select the CONTROLS tab.
  3. On PC, open the KEYBOARD AND MOUSE sub-tab to change keyboard bindings.

During a run

  1. Press Esc.
  2. Open the SYSTEM tab.
  3. Choose SETTINGS.
  4. Select CONTROLS, then KEYBOARD AND MOUSE on PC.

The settings tabs are CONTROLS, ACCESSIBILITY, GAMEPLAY, VIDEO, AUDIO, and LANGUAGE. Press Q and E to move between tabs.

Apply, reject, restore, or close a change

Select the control row and press Enter to begin binding a new input. Press Space to apply the new binding. The footer documents these additional controls:

Key Function
Alt Restore the selected row’s default
R Restore all defaults
Delete Reject unapplied changes
Space Apply the selected change
Backspace Close the settings screen

After applying a remap, test it immediately. If the new input does not respond, return to the same row, verify that the binding was applied rather than merely selected, and check for a conflicting input.

Accessibility settings that reduce distraction or fatigue

PS5 features documented by Sony

Sony/PlayStation’s PS5 listing records 10 accessibility features for the game. Because that listing is specifically for PS5, confirm equivalent options in the Xbox Series X, Switch, or PC menus rather than assuming every item exists on those platforms.

Feature What it changes When to use it
Alternate control layout or remapping support Changes selected controls Use when a default input is uncomfortable or unreachable
Motion-control toggle Allows play without motion controls Turn off if involuntary movement or camera motion is distracting
Touch-control toggle Allows play without touch controls Turn off if touch inputs are accidental
Controller-vibration toggle Disables vibration Useful for sensory sensitivity or reduced hand fatigue
Adaptive-trigger toggle Disables adaptive-trigger effects Useful if trigger resistance slows repeated actions
Individual volume controls Adjusts audio channels separately Lower an overwhelming channel without muting all sound
Basic subtitles Displays spoken dialogue as text Use when you need visual dialogue support
Control reminders Shows control guidance Keep enabled while learning unfamiliar actions
Tutorial reminders Repeats tutorial guidance Useful after a long break or when a mechanic is easy to forget
Pausing during gameplay or cinematics in offline play Permits pausing in supported offline moments Useful for breaks, interruptions, or processing time

These toggles operate independently. Disabling vibration or adaptive triggers changes feedback, not combat balance, so you can remove those distractions without lowering the game’s challenge.

Additional options reported in review coverage

TechRadar reports thicker outlines, a colorblind mode, subtitles in multiple languages, and voice-over options. Treat these as options to look for in your platform’s menus, not as a promise that every edition exposes identical labels. TechRadar also warns that one-hit-kill traps remain; visual or audio assistance does not make every hazard harmless.

Difficulty: what to use instead of an Easy mode

There is no traditional Easy/Normal/Hard selector

Instead, iTechGuides reports that Gameplay > Custom Mode exposes individual adjustments for damage, potion capacity, experience points, boss-door respawns, and death behavior. Accessibility controls are separate from these gameplay adjustments.

Build a gentler first run

Start with comfort options, then add boss-respawn or potion assistance if repeated attempts are the main obstacle. Change damage settings only if those measures are not enough. This order preserves more of the normal combat feel while addressing the points that cost the most time.

Check achievement consequences first

iTechGuides warns that enabling Custom Mode can make some achievements unobtainable. Decide whether achievement eligibility matters before turning it on. If it does, keep the standard gameplay rules and use only the separate accessibility controls until you have confirmed the consequences for your platform and save.

Which setup is best for different players?

Priority Recommended starting point Reason
Familiar console controls PS5 defaults with left-stick movement Preserves the documented face-button and shoulder layout
Very small movement corrections PS5 D-pad movement, if it feels cleaner in testing Discrete taps can reduce analog overcorrection
Keyboard-first play W/A/S/D, Space, Shift, mouse attack/whip, R, C, held X Matches the documented PC bindings
Hand fatigue or limited reach Remap frequent actions so movement, jump, dodge, attack, parry, and heal stay close together Reduces hand repositioning
Sensory sensitivity Disable vibration, adaptive triggers, motion, and touch as needed; tune audio independently Reduces feedback that is not required for balance
Need for extra gameplay assistance Custom Mode with potion or boss-respawn support first Targets recovery and attrition before changing damage
Achievement-focused run Standard gameplay rules plus separate accessibility toggles Avoids the reported Custom Mode eligibility risk

Troubleshooting common control problems

A remapped key does nothing

  • Return to CONTROLS > KEYBOARD AND MOUSE and select the row again.
  • Press Enter before pressing the new key.
  • Press Space to apply; leaving with Backspace before applying can discard the change.
  • Use Alt on that row to restore its default, then bind a different key.

Two actions conflict

Use R to restore all defaults, then remap one action at a time. Keep a written note of each change so you can identify the conflicting pair instead of replacing the whole layout repeatedly.

Parries or dodges feel late

First verify that the input is reachable while your movement hand remains in position. On a controller, test the default shoulder placement; on PC, move parry or dodge closer to the movement cluster. Turn off vibration or adaptive triggers if their feedback makes you hesitate, then retest the same encounter.

Feedback is overwhelming

Disable vibration, adaptive triggers, motion, or touch independently under ACCESSIBILITY. Use the individual volume controls rather than muting all audio, because separate levels let you retain dialogue or useful effects.

How do I apply a PC key remap?

Select the row in CONTROLS > KEYBOARD AND MOUSE, press Enter, press the new input, and press Space to apply it.

Can I disable vibration and adaptive triggers separately?

Yes. The PS5 accessibility listing documents independent options to play without controller vibration and adaptive-trigger effects.

Will Custom Mode affect achievements?

iTechGuides warns that enabling Custom Mode can make some achievements unobtainable, so check that consequence before using it on an achievement-focused run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the DualSense required on PS5?

No required accessory is documented. The standard DualSense layout is the sensible starting point, while remapping or an alternate controller can help with reach and fatigue.

Are the PS5 accessibility options available on every platform?

Sony’s listing documents 10 features for PS5 specifically. Check the Xbox Series X, Switch, and PC menus for equivalent controls rather than assuming identical availability.

Do accessibility toggles make traps harmless?

No. TechRadar reports that one-hit-kill traps remain, so outlines, subtitles, audio adjustments, and remapping improve information or comfort but do not remove every hazard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I pause during a cutscene or gameplay?

Sony documents pausing during gameplay or cinematics in offline play on PS5. Confirm the behavior in your platform’s edition and mode.

The Bottom Line

Keep the documented PS5 or PC defaults until a specific input causes missed jumps, late parries, or hand strain. Then remap one frequent action at a time, apply it explicitly, and test it under pressure. Disable vibration, adaptive triggers, motion, touch, or loud audio independently when they add sensory load. For extra help, use Custom Mode’s potion or boss-respawn adjustments first, but decide whether achievements matter before enabling it because some may become unobtainable.
