For a demanding demo, start with the game’s recommended or hardware-detected preset, then tune for stable frame pacing rather than the highest preset name. Keep every action available through the controller, lower shadows and other expensive effects before sacrificing resolution, and use the game’s quality upscaler when native rendering is too slow. On Steam Deck, verify the 1280×800 or 1280×720 display mode, readable text, and a controller-navigable launcher before judging performance.
Start with a reliable baseline
A demo is often a poor place to begin with a heavily customized configuration. Select the game’s recommended preset or let its hardware-detection routine choose the starting point. Run the opening sequence and one demanding gameplay area before changing several options at once. This gives you a known baseline and makes each later adjustment easier to evaluate.
Judge the result by frame-time consistency, not only by the largest frame-rate number shown by an overlay. A lower but steady result usually feels better than a higher average interrupted by visible pauses. There is no universally valid FPS target for every demo: hardware, drivers, Proton or DirectX versions, display refresh rate, and the game engine all affect the result. Steam Support notes that the number of possible hardware and software combinations makes detailed per-user analysis impractical, so validate settings in the demo’s busiest scene rather than assuming a setting that works in a menu will work everywhere.
Make the controller usable before changing graphics
A demanding demo can appear broken when the real problem is an incomplete controller layout. Confirm the entire path from launching the game to navigating menus and playing a scene.

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E

Check the launcher and first-run screens
- Start the demo with the controller already connected.
- Test directional navigation, confirm, cancel, pause, and the button that opens settings.
- Move through any launcher, sign-in prompt, graphics dialog, accessibility page, or legal screen that appears before the game.
- Verify that text selection, sliders, drop-downs, and confirmation dialogs can be operated without a mouse.
- Keep a mouse or touchscreen available as a fallback if the launcher does not fully support gamepad input.
Valve’s Steamworks guidance strongly recommends—and requires for Deck or Machine Verified status—that a game’s default controller configuration provide access to all in-game functionality. Treat that as a practical test: if a graphics option, map, inventory screen, or confirmation prompt cannot be reached with the default layout, the setup is incomplete even if movement works.
Use the game’s official or default layout first
Begin with the developer’s default or official controller scheme. It is the most useful reference for deciding whether a demo’s interface is complete. Only remap after you have confirmed that every required function is present. When you do remap, preserve the functions needed during a first playthrough: movement, camera control, confirm, back, pause, interaction, attack or primary action, secondary action, and any button that opens the map or inventory.
Do not judge a controller layout solely from the first minute of play. A demo may introduce a radial menu, vehicle controls, a weapon wheel, a photo mode, or a tutorial prompt later. Test those systems before declaring the layout ready.

Which graphics settings should you lower first?
Lower settings in an order that usually reduces GPU load while preserving interface readability and the scene’s overall structure. Change one group at a time and revisit the same demanding area after each change.
1. Shadows
Reduce shadow quality before dropping the display resolution. Shadows can be expensive, and a lower shadow setting often changes fine shadow detail without making menus or text harder to read.
2. Volumetric effects
Fog, smoke, light shafts, clouds, and other volumetric effects are common sources of heavy GPU work. Move them down when a scene with weather, haze, or dramatic lighting produces uneven frame pacing.
3. Reflections
Screen-space or other real-time reflections can become costly in wet streets, polished floors, water, and glass-heavy scenes. Lower reflections before abandoning native resolution if the demo’s menus and characters remain clear but reflective environments cause slowdowns.

4. Ray tracing
Disable or reduce ray-traced effects early when the demo offers them. Ray tracing can consume a large part of the available performance budget, and conventional lighting at a lower quality level is often preferable to severe stutter.

5. Foliage density and distance detail
Reduce foliage density when outdoor scenes are the heaviest part of the demo. If the game separates object distance or level-of-detail controls, lower those only as needed after the major effects above have been tested.
Preserve interface readability. A setting that makes the HUD, subtitles, menus, or tutorial prompts difficult to read can make a demo effectively unplayable even when the frame-rate counter improves.
Should you use FSR or another upscaler?
Use the game’s quality upscaler when the native-resolution image cannot maintain steady frame pacing. An upscaler renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs the output for the display, allowing you to keep the display mode and interface scale while reducing rendering work. Choose the highest quality mode that remains stable in the demo’s busiest scene.
Do not assume that one upscaler mode is correct for every game. Different engines expose different quality levels, sharpening controls, and reconstruction methods. Inspect fine text, thin geometry, foliage, and moving objects after enabling it. If those elements shimmer or become difficult to read, move to a higher quality mode or reduce individual effects instead.
Steam Deck example: FSR 1.0 Balanced in Baldur’s Gate 3
Larian’s official guidance for Baldur’s Gate 3 provides a concrete example rather than a universal recipe: use the Official Layout controller scheme, and when performance is poor on Steam Deck, begin with the default medium video options and AMD FSR 1.0 set to Balanced. A different demo may need a different mode, so use this as a starting point only when the game and hardware match that example.
Steam Deck settings for controller-first testing
Steam Deck is designed to run demanding AAA games and includes full-size thumbsticks, two trackpads, four customizable back buttons, and a built-in gyroscope. Those controls can make it a useful platform for testing demos that are intended to be played from the couch or without a mouse, but the exact LCD or OLED model still matters when you evaluate a listing or compare expected behavior.
Verify the display mode and text
Valve’s guidance for Verified games calls for support of the default 1280×800 or 1280×720 resolution, good default settings, legible text, and a controller-navigable launcher. Check the demo at the Deck’s native display mode before experimenting with lower internal resolutions. If text or interface elements are clipped, tiny, or unreachable with the controller, fix that usability problem before judging graphics quality.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the controls deliberately
- Use the thumbsticks for movement and camera control unless the game’s official layout specifies otherwise.
- Test both trackpads for cursor or menu navigation when a launcher presents pointer-based controls.
- Reserve back buttons for functions you need repeatedly during play, but keep the default layout intact until you have verified all actions.
- Test the gyroscope only when the game exposes a clear aiming or camera option; do not assume it is enabled by default.
Compare presets by more than frame rate
On handheld hardware, compare two viable presets on four axes: frame-time stability, image clarity at the display’s native resolution, input latency and controller completeness, and power or fan cost. Prefer the preset that keeps pacing stable and the interface readable during the heaviest scene, even if another preset has a higher peak frame-rate reading.

Windows 11 settings that can affect a demo
Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 titles. Microsoft documents the feature as a way to reduce presentation latency in windowed or borderless modes. If the demo uses one of those APIs, enable the optimization in Windows Graphics settings, then restart the game so the change takes effect.
Systems with more than one GPU can also use Windows Graphics settings to select the high-performance GPU for the demo. Confirm the selected GPU before troubleshooting a low frame rate on a laptop or other multi-GPU system. Restart the game after changing this assignment as well.
These Windows options do not replace in-game tuning. They address presentation and GPU selection; shadows, volumetrics, reflections, ray tracing, foliage, resolution, and upscaling still need to be tested inside the demo.

A bad resolution, display mode, or graphics API choice can make a demo fail before you reach its settings screen. Steam Support documents launch options as a recovery path and notes that an alternate DirectX mode can help some older graphics hardware when the game supports that mode.
- Open the demo’s Steam Properties and locate its Launch Options field.
- Enter only a launch option documented or supported for that game. Do not copy a flag intended for a different engine.
- Use the game’s supported alternate DirectX mode when older graphics hardware is the likely cause.
- Launch the demo and return its display mode and quality settings to conservative values.
- Remove the temporary launch option after the game starts normally, unless the developer specifically requires it.
If the demo still fails, restore the last known-good configuration rather than adding several undocumented flags at once. The exact recovery option depends on the game’s engine and supported launch parameters.
A repeatable tuning procedure
Use this sequence whenever you test a new demanding demo:
- Connect and test the controller. Confirm launcher navigation, menus, prompts, and gameplay actions.
- Apply the recommended or detected preset. Record the display resolution, quality preset, upscaler state, and graphics API before making changes.
- Find the heaviest scene. Use the demo’s busiest area, not only its opening hallway or pause menu.
- Stabilize the large cost centers. Lower shadows, volumetrics, reflections, ray tracing, and foliage density in that order, checking the scene after each change.
- Protect readability. Keep native output resolution when performance allows. If it does not, enable the game’s quality upscaler and inspect text, foliage, and thin details.
- Check input response. Make sure the controller still reaches every function and that visual improvements have not introduced distracting latency.
- On Windows 11, verify system graphics options. For compatible DirectX 10 or 11 windowed or borderless games, test Optimizations for windowed games and select the high-performance GPU on multi-GPU systems.
- On Steam Deck, verify the platform requirements. Check 1280×800 or 1280×720 support, legible text, good defaults, and a controller-navigable launcher.
- Save one known-good profile. Keep the stable configuration so you can return to it after testing experimental options.
How to compare two viable presets
When two configurations both launch and feel playable, compare them explicitly instead of relying on a single quality label.
| Comparison axis | What to inspect | Preferred result |
|---|---|---|
| Frame-time stability | Pauses, hitching, and consistency in the busiest scene | The preset with steadier pacing |
| Image clarity | Text, HUD elements, thin geometry, foliage, and moving objects | The clearest image that remains stable |
| Input latency and controller completeness | Menu access, prompts, camera response, and every required action | The layout that keeps all functions reachable with responsive input |
| Power and fan cost on handheld hardware | Whether the device must work harder to sustain the preset | The lower-cost preset when visual differences are small |
This method prevents an Ultra label from deciding the result by itself. A medium or high preset with a quality upscaler may be the better choice when it keeps the demo readable and consistent.

Common failure modes and fixes
The game launches, but the controller cannot operate the launcher
Use a mouse or touchscreen to pass the launcher, then verify whether the in-game layout supports all functions. If it does not, switch to the developer’s official or default layout before creating custom bindings.
The opening area is smooth, but later scenes stutter
Return to the busiest scene and lower shadows, volumetrics, reflections, ray tracing, and foliage density. Test each change separately so you know which setting removes the hitching.
The image is sharp, but frame pacing is poor
Keep the interface and output resolution if possible, reduce expensive effects, and then test the game’s quality upscaler. Compare the reconstructed image in motion, not only in a static screenshot.

The game looks blurry after enabling an upscaler
Move to a higher quality mode if available, inspect the sharpening control, and check text and thin geometry. If clarity remains unacceptable, disable the upscaler and lower individual effects instead.
A graphics change causes a launch failure
Use a supported Steam launch option or alternate DirectX mode when the game documents one, start with conservative video settings, and remove the temporary option once the demo launches normally.
Windows uses the wrong GPU
In Windows Graphics settings, assign the demo to the high-performance GPU on systems with more than one GPU, then restart the game.
What the evidence can and cannot tell you
Official guidance establishes practical requirements and recovery paths, not a universal performance number. Valve defines the controller-access, resolution, text-legibility, and launcher expectations for Verified games; Microsoft documents Windows 11 options for compatible windowed DirectX 10 and 11 titles; Steam Support describes launch-option recovery; and Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3 advice illustrates one Steam Deck configuration. None of those sources supplies an independent benchmark or a single FPS target that applies to every demanding demo. Your final choice should therefore be the configuration that remains stable, readable, and fully controllable in the demo’s heaviest scene.
