There is no single best context tool for every production agent. The dependable design is a stack: keep a small, task-focused working context; store durable facts and artifacts outside it; retrieve only what is relevant; and compress history with a recoverable, tested policy. For model-portable applications, LangGraph and LangChain provide the broadest control. Claude-centric teams can use Anthropic’s server-side compaction, context editing, prompt caching and memory-tool pattern. Tool-heavy workflows benefit from LangChain Deep Agents’ filesystem offloading, while persistent agents with very large effective memory are a strong fit for a MemGPT-style hierarchy.

This matters because a context window is working memory, not a perfect database. Anthropic’s documentation warns that accuracy and recall degrade as token count grows, a failure mode it calls context rot. A larger advertised window therefore does not remove the need for memory policy, retrieval, compression and evaluation.

What context management does in a production agent

Every model call receives a bounded sequence of tokens: system instructions, conversation turns, tool definitions, tool results, retrieved records and the current request. Context management decides which of those items enter the active window, in what order, for how long and with what authority.

  • Active context: the instructions, current state and evidence the model needs for this turn.
  • Durable memory: user preferences, decisions, account facts and other information that must survive a session.
  • Retrieval: search and filtering that bring selected durable records or documents into active context.
  • Compression: summarizing, compacting or offloading older material when the working budget is threatened.

Keeping these layers separate limits prompt growth and makes deletion, auditing and recovery possible. It also prevents the common mistake of sending an entire transcript on every turn simply because storage is cheap.

Why more tokens can reduce quality

Anthropic describes context as a finite resource: as token count grows, accuracy and recall can fall. Irrelevant instructions may compete with the current task, old tool output can distract the model, and a critical fact may be buried among thousands of low-value tokens. Treat the window as a budget to allocate, not a quota to fill.

Set a budget before choosing a tool

Write down separate ceilings for instructions, current task state, retrieved evidence, tool output and conversation history. Reserve headroom for the model’s response and for unexpected tool calls. A policy such as “never exceed 70% of the model limit before generation” is easier to operate than waiting for an API error, but the exact percentage must be validated with your workload.

LangGraph and LangChain: the model-portable default

LangGraph treats a conversation as a thread with checkpoints, while its long-term memory model stores information across threads and sessions. LangChain middleware can enforce limits, summarize history, filter messages and select memories before a model call. This combination is a good starting point when you may change model providers or need application-owned policies.

How the separation works

  • Thread-scoped state: keep the current plan, pending approvals, recent messages and tool results needed to continue the run.
  • Cross-session store: persist durable facts under explicit namespaces, such as a user, workspace or project identifier.
  • Retriever: query the store with the current task, then apply metadata filters, recency rules and a maximum item count.
  • Middleware: enforce token budgets, redact sensitive fields, trigger summarization and place selected records into a predictable prompt section.

When it is the best choice

Choose this route when portability, observability and explicit control outweigh the convenience of a provider-managed feature. You can replace the model, vector index or database independently, and you can keep the original transcript while presenting a compact working state to the model.

Operational costs

You own the failure modes. A poor retrieval query can return stale or conflicting memories; an overaggressive summary can erase a requirement; and every additional store, index and middleware step adds latency and credentials to secure. Define schemas, deletion rules and ownership before storing user data.

Anthropic’s native context controls

Anthropic documents several controls for Claude applications: server-side compaction, context editing, prompt caching and a memory-tool pattern. These features can reduce application code when your workload is tied to Claude and you are comfortable following provider-specific limits and availability.

Server-side compaction

Compaction turns an expanding conversation into a shorter continuation while preserving information selected by the provider’s process. It is useful for long-running workflows where manually rebuilding a summary is difficult. Your application should still retain the original transcript or artifacts; compaction is a working-context transition, not a substitute for a system of record.

Context editing

Context editing can remove or transform selected content before the next request. Use explicit rules for old tool results, redundant messages and sensitive data. Log what was removed and why so an operator can explain a later decision.

Prompt caching

Caching can avoid repeatedly processing stable prefixes such as system instructions or large reference material. It reduces repeated work but does not make irrelevant content useful, and cache behavior, pricing and retention must be checked against the current Claude platform terms.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Memory-tool pattern

A memory tool lets the agent write and read durable information through controlled operations rather than stuffing every prior turn into the prompt. Require a namespace, provenance, timestamp and deletion policy for each write. Treat model-generated memory as a proposal that may need validation, not as an authoritative database update.

Model-window qualifications

Anthropic’s current Claude platform documentation, accessed in 2026, lists context windows up to 1 million tokens for some models and 200,000 tokens for other listed Claude models. These are documented limits, not evidence that a 1-million-token prompt will produce better answers. Test quality, latency and cost at the window size your agent will actually use.

LangChain Deep Agents: a concrete compression pipeline

Deep Agents demonstrates a practical sequence for long, tool-heavy runs. The system tries to remove bulk before it summarizes meaning:

  1. Offload oversized tool results. A tool response above the documented 20,000-token threshold is written to a filesystem-backed artifact instead of being inserted in full. The active context receives a pointer and enough metadata to search or reopen the artifact.
  2. Offload redundant tool inputs. When older write or edit calls accumulate, the system can truncate them after the context reaches 85% of the configured window. The durable artifact remains available if the agent needs exact details.
  3. Summarize only when offloading is insufficient. The remaining conversation is compressed into a continuation summary that records the objective, decisions, constraints, unresolved questions and locations of source artifacts.

Why offloading should precede summarization

A summary is lossy; an artifact pointer is not. Keeping large tool output searchable outside the prompt lets the model recover an exact row, error message or code fragment instead of relying on a paraphrase. The filesystem must be access-controlled, encrypted where appropriate, garbage-collected and protected from path traversal and prompt-injection content.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to verify in production

  • Whether a tool result is actually persisted before its prompt representation is shortened.
  • Whether the agent can retrieve a specific omitted fact by name, identifier or query.
  • How artifact growth affects storage cost, indexing latency and deletion requests.
  • Whether concurrent runs can read or overwrite one another’s files.

MemGPT-style hierarchical memory

MemGPT’s 2023-10-12 paper, “MemGPT: Towards LLMs as Operating Systems,” models an agent’s memory after an operating system. A small working context is analogous to RAM; a larger archival store holds information outside the immediate window; and the agent uses control-flow tools to page material in and out. The paper’s conclusion describes this hierarchy as providing the illusion of larger context resources for an LLM.

How paging works

  1. The agent keeps instructions, the current objective and a compact set of active facts in working memory.
  2. A control loop decides when a fact should be written to archival storage or when more space is needed.
  3. Retrieval brings selected archival records into working memory for the next reasoning step.
  4. Evicted material remains addressable rather than disappearing with a summary.

Best use cases

This architecture suits personal or organizational agents expected to persist for weeks or months, maintain many projects and revisit old decisions. It is especially useful when the effective information requirement is much larger than any single model window.

Trade-offs

Paging adds tool calls, retrieval failures and control-loop complexity. A wrong memory can be more damaging than no memory because it appears authoritative. Add provenance, confidence, timestamps and conflict handling, and measure how often the agent retrieves stale or irrelevant records.

Agent Protocol concepts: useful vocabulary, not a memory product

Agent Protocol concepts organize serving around runs, threads, stores and search/retrieval. This can help teams expose a consistent interface while changing the underlying framework or model. It does not, by itself, define a summarizer, vector database, retention policy or security model. Treat it as an integration contract and implement the context policy behind that contract.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a context policy step by step

  1. Define the objective and stop conditions. Write what a successful run must accomplish, what requires human approval and which facts must be recoverable after compression.
  2. Allocate the token budget. Reserve space for system instructions, task state, retrieved evidence, tool calls and the final response. Keep a hard ceiling below the provider limit.
  3. Classify every input. Label content as instruction, state, evidence, durable memory, transient observation or untrusted tool output. Give each class a different retention rule.
  4. Design namespaces and schemas. Store user, tenant, project and run identifiers separately. Include source, timestamp, confidence and sensitivity labels.
  5. Choose the smallest mechanism that meets the requirement. Use checkpoints for thread continuity, a store for durable facts, retrieval for selective recall, offloading for bulky artifacts and summaries for narrative continuity.
  6. Preserve originals. Keep the raw transcript, tool response or document under a retention policy so a summary can be checked and details can be recovered.
  7. Trigger transitions explicitly. Set thresholds for tool-result offloading, history truncation and summarization. Emit an event when a transition occurs.
  8. Assemble the prompt deterministically. Put system rules first, then current state, retrieved evidence with provenance, the latest user request and only the history needed to interpret it.
  9. Apply security filters. Treat tool output and retrieved text as untrusted data. Strip secrets, isolate tenant data and mark quoted instructions as data rather than commands.
  10. Measure before rollout. Compare answer quality, recoverability, latency, token use, storage cost and provider errors with and without compression.

Evaluate compression and memory, not just token savings

Token reduction is an implementation metric, not a quality verdict. LangChain’s guidance recommends tests that force compression, ask the agent to continue the original objective and require recovery of a fact that was removed from active context.

Recoverability test

Insert a distinctive fact into an early tool result, trigger offloading or summarization, then ask for that fact later without exposing its location. Score exactness, provenance and the number of retrieval steps required.

Goal-preservation test

Start a multi-step task with explicit constraints, force a context transition, and verify that the agent completes the same objective rather than pursuing a plausible but different one. Include negative requirements such as “do not send” or “wait for approval.”

Conflict and staleness test

Write two versions of a preference or project decision with timestamps. Ask the agent to resolve the conflict and explain which record it used. A safe system should not silently choose an obsolete memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Adversarial test

Place an instruction-like payload inside a retrieved document or tool output. Confirm that the agent treats it as untrusted content and follows the system policy instead.

Production telemetry

  • Active-context tokens and percentage of the configured budget.
  • Number and size of offloaded artifacts.
  • Summary and compaction events, including trigger reason.
  • Retrieval hit rate, stale-memory rate and human corrections.
  • Latency, model errors, tool failures and storage costs.
  • Objective-loss incidents and prompt-injection detections.

Common failure modes and fixes

The agent reaches the limit before compression runs

Move the trigger earlier, reserve response headroom and count tool definitions plus tool results, not only visible chat messages. A preflight token estimator should reject or offload oversized inputs before the model call.

Summaries omit a critical constraint

Use a structured summary schema with fields for objective, constraints, decisions, open questions, entities and artifact references. Add a test that checks every required field after compression, and retain the original source for recovery.

Retrieval returns too much or the wrong tenant’s data

Apply namespace and authorization filters before ranking. Cap the number of records, favor recent authoritative sources, and log the identifiers inserted into each prompt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Old memories override current instructions

Separate immutable system rules from editable memories, attach timestamps and confidence, and let the current user request supersede preferences when policy allows. Never place durable memory in the same undifferentiated block as system instructions.

Tool output carries an injection

Wrap tool results as data, not instructions; escape or delimit content; and require a policy check before any memory write or external side effect. Offloading a malicious response does not make it trustworthy.

Latency rises after adding memory

Reduce retrieval fan-out, cache stable indexes or prompt prefixes where supported, batch metadata lookups and avoid summarizing on every turn. Measure tail latency, not only the average.

Deletion requests cannot be honored

Track every copy: checkpoints, summaries, vector records, filesystem artifacts, caches and logs. Use stable record IDs and a deletion workflow that can prove removal or document an applicable retention exception.

Choosing by scenario

Model-portable customer-support or workflow agent

Start with LangGraph checkpoints, a namespaced long-term store and retrieval middleware. Add deterministic summarization when a run approaches its budget. This gives the team control over providers, schemas and retention.

Claude-only research or operations agent

Use Anthropic’s native compaction and context-editing controls, with prompt caching for stable prefixes and a memory-tool pattern for durable facts. Keep an application-side transcript and test behavior whenever model versions or beta features change.

Agent that processes large files and many tools

Adopt the Deep Agents sequence: offload large results, remove redundant historical inputs at the 85% threshold, then summarize. Make artifact storage searchable, isolated and recoverable before enabling automatic deletion.

Persistent personal or project agent

Use a MemGPT-style working/archival hierarchy when cross-session continuity and effective context size matter more than architectural simplicity. Add provenance and conflict resolution before allowing autonomous memory writes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Organization standardizing multiple agent implementations

Define a protocol-level vocabulary for runs, threads, stores and retrieval, then enforce a shared security and evaluation contract beneath it. Do not assume the protocol supplies memory behavior.

Practical recommendation

For most production teams, begin with an explicit, model-portable policy: thread checkpoints for active state, a durable namespaced store, retrieval limits, artifact offloading and tested summarization. Choose provider-native controls when their integration benefits outweigh lock-in. Move to hierarchical paging when the agent must maintain a long-lived, very large memory.

Whichever tool you select, keep the working prompt small, preserve originals, make memory writes auditable and test recovery after every compression boundary. The winning system is not the one with the largest context window; it is the one that reliably presents the right information at the right time while retaining a safe path back to the source.
