Use Screaming Frog SEO Spider when duplicate detection must be deep and controllable, Sitebulb when you need configurable thin-page rules and visual explanations, Ahrefs Site Audit when duplicate and quality checks should sit beside broader SEO data, and Semrush Site Audit when your team already works in Semrush. None of these tools can decide whether a page deserves to exist. Treat every finding as a review queue, then use search intent, page purpose, canonical relationships, internal links, traffic and conversions to choose an action.
What these tools are actually finding
“Duplicate,” “thin” and “low-value” describe different problems. A useful audit keeps them separate so that a technically similar URL is not deleted merely because it resembles another page.
Duplicate content
Exact duplicates have essentially the same page content, often because of URL parameters, printer versions, faceted navigation, HTTP/HTTPS variants or copied templates. Near duplicates share most wording but differ in a small block such as a location, product attribute or date. Semantic duplicates may use different words while satisfying the same search intent. A crawler can identify similarity; it cannot know whether two URLs are intentionally separate editions, language variants, legal pages or pagination states.
Thin content
A thin page provides little useful information for its intended visitor. Word count can help locate candidates, but it is only a heuristic. A short contact page, status page or highly specific answer may be valuable, while a 2,000-word page can still be empty of original help. Sitebulb explicitly lets each site set its own word-count threshold rather than prescribing a universal number.

Low-value pages
Low value is a business and audience judgment, not a crawler label. A page may be technically unique yet fail to satisfy intent, attract no qualified visits, duplicate another conversion path or exist only because a content-management system generated it. Review organic impressions and clicks, conversions, internal links, page purpose, freshness and the audience served before changing it.
Google’s published guidance says its automated ranking systems prioritize “helpful, reliable information that’s created to benefit people, and not content that’s created to manipulate search engine rankings.” Google’s helpful-content guidance is therefore a better standard than any arbitrary word count.
Comparison at a glance
| Tool | Strongest use | Duplicate detection documented | Thin/low-value approach | Context and workflow |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Screaming Frog SEO Spider | Deep, controllable duplicate investigation | MD5 exact-match filtering, near-duplicate matching and semantic-similarity analysis | Requires your own editorial and performance review; the cited tutorial focuses on duplicate analysis | Raw crawl detail, threshold control and exports; stand-alone crawler workflow |
| Sitebulb | Configurable thin-page triage and visual explanations | Duplicate and similar-page groups with distribution, crawl depth, path and HTML-template views | Site-specific word-count heuristic plus page-pattern analysis | Also documents orphan pages, XML sitemaps, structured data and raw-versus-rendered HTML |
| Ahrefs Site Audit | Duplicate and quality checks alongside an integrated SEO platform | Duplicate and low-quality checks, with raw HTML, rendered HTML and page-text inspection | Interpret findings with Google-connected data and canonical/pagination context | Useful when the team already uses Ahrefs data and projects |
| Semrush Site Audit | Audits inside an existing Semrush workflow | Similarity checks that can expose template-driven duplication | Inspect unique body text and page purpose; shared headers and footers can inflate similarity | Semrush’s documentation gives an 85% similarity example, not a ranking or success statistic |
No authoritative source establishes a universal accuracy ranking, market-share figure or “best” score for these products. The practical choice is the workflow your team can configure, inspect and act on consistently.

The Screaming Frog duplicate-content tutorial documents three useful layers of analysis:
- Exact duplicates: an MD5 hash groups pages whose crawled content matches exactly.
- Near duplicates: matching compares pages that are mostly alike but contain differences.
- Semantic similarity: analysis can surface pages that express similar meaning even when the wording is not identical.
This combination is the best fit when an auditor needs to choose thresholds, inspect individual URLs and export a defensible list for editors or developers. The tool’s documentation also makes the essential qualification explicit: duplicate detections must be reviewed in context before action.

How to use it for a duplicate investigation
- Start a crawl of the site or the relevant directory and let the spider collect the HTML for every indexable and non-indexable variant you need to compare.
- Open the duplicate-content views and begin with exact matches. Export the URL groups, then note status code, canonical target, indexability, hreflang and pagination relationships for each member.
- Review near-duplicate groups next. Raise or lower the similarity threshold to match the site’s templates; do not assume the vendor’s default is appropriate for a catalogue, support centre and editorial site alike.
- Use semantic-similarity results to find competing pages with different wording. Read the pages side by side and record the intended audience and query for each.
- For every group, select an action only after checking organic impressions, clicks, conversions, internal links and business ownership. Keep legitimate regional, language, legal and paginated variants when they serve distinct purposes.
Where Screaming Frog needs human judgment
Large shared templates can make pages look alike even when their body content is useful. A duplicate flag also does not tell you which URL should survive, whether a canonical is correct, or whether a redirect would break a campaign or external link. Use exports to create an owner-approved action list rather than applying a bulk delete or redirect rule directly from the report.
Sitebulb: configurable thin-page heuristics and visual diagnosis
Sitebulb’s on-page documentation treats word count as a heuristic and lets the auditor set the threshold for the site. That matters because a short financial disclosure and a short product variant should not be judged by the same minimum as a research guide.
Its duplicate-content report groups duplicate and similar pages and displays distribution, crawl depth, page path and HTML template. Those dimensions help reveal whether the issue is a handful of accidental copies or a systematic template producing hundreds of weak URLs.
A practical Sitebulb workflow
- Set the crawl scope to the site section you can actually review, then define a provisional word-count threshold based on the shortest pages that genuinely satisfy their intent.
- Sort thin-page candidates by template, directory and crawl depth. Clusters often indicate a faceted-navigation rule, tag archive, internal search page or CMS pattern rather than an editorial failure.
- Open the duplicate and similar-page groups and compare the unique body block, not just navigation, footer and boilerplate.
- Check orphan-page and XML-sitemap reports to see whether a low-value URL is being surfaced despite having no useful internal path, or is being presented as a priority in the sitemap.
- Use raw-versus-rendered HTML comparisons when a JavaScript application appears empty to a crawler. A page that is thin in raw HTML but complete after rendering may need a rendering or delivery fix rather than content removal.
Sitebulb’s broader product documentation covers orphan pages, XML sitemaps, structured data and raw-versus-rendered HTML. These reports add the crawl context needed to distinguish a genuinely weak page from one that is simply hard for a particular fetch mode to interpret.
Ahrefs Site Audit: integrated SEO evidence around duplicates
Ahrefs Site Audit documents duplicate and low-quality-content checks and lets you inspect raw HTML, rendered HTML and the text extracted from a page. Connections to Google data sources make it practical to place a content finding beside search performance rather than judging it in isolation.

Ahrefs’ explanation of good and bad duplicates is particularly important. A canonical or hreflang relationship can make two URLs intentionally related; that is not the same as two competing pages with no clear preferred version. Pagination can also produce legitimate repetition. Read the reported relationship before changing markup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How to triage an Ahrefs finding
- Open the URL and inspect raw HTML, rendered HTML and page text to determine whether the apparent duplication is in the body or only in shared chrome.
- Confirm the canonical target, hreflang annotations and pagination links. A “duplicate” with a correct relationship may need no content rewrite.
- Compare the URL’s impressions, clicks and conversions with its proposed canonical or neighbouring page.
- Record whether the page has a distinct audience, product, location, language or legal purpose. Preserve that purpose even if the copy is similar.
Ahrefs is the efficient choice when your team already manages keywords, links and performance in the platform. It is less useful as a substitute for editorial review: an integrated issue list still needs a decision about intent and business value.
Semrush Site Audit: finding template-driven similarity
Semrush’s duplicate-content documentation warns that shared headers and footers can make pages appear duplicate when very little unique body text remains. It gives an 85% similarity example to illustrate a detection condition. That figure is not a ranking factor, accuracy rate or expected outcome for every site.
Use Semrush findings as a template audit
- Open the affected URLs and isolate the main content area. Ignore navigation, footer, cookie notices and other repeated elements when assessing usefulness.
- Compare the unique paragraphs, data, media, calls to action and evidence that explain why each URL exists.
- Group URLs by template, folder and intended query. A large cluster with nearly identical body copy usually needs a CMS or content-model decision, not hundreds of individual rewrites.
- Check canonical and hreflang implementation, internal links and sitemap inclusion before selecting a consolidation or noindex action.
Semrush is the sensible workflow fit when the team already uses its projects and reporting. Do not treat a similarity percentage as an instruction to merge pages; page purpose and unique body value decide that.
A complete duplicate, thin and low-value audit procedure
1. Define the audit boundary and success criteria
Choose the domain, subdomain or directory, crawl date and URL types. Decide whether the goal is to reduce index bloat, improve conversions, fix templates, protect international targeting or prepare a migration. Without a defined outcome, teams tend to collect issue counts instead of resolving pages.

2. Crawl more than the XML sitemap
Include internally linked URLs, sitemap URLs and known parameter or legacy patterns where the tool allows it. Compare what the crawler discovers with what the sitemap claims is important. An orphan report can reveal pages that remain indexable but have no useful internal route.
3. Build an evidence row for every candidate
| Evidence | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Similarity type | Is the match exact, near, semantic or mainly shared template? |
| Search intent | Would the same visitor and query be satisfied by both URLs? |
| Unique value | What original information, data, service or audience does this URL add? |
| Technical relationship | Is there a canonical, hreflang, pagination or parameter reason for the duplication? |
| Performance | What are impressions, clicks, conversions and meaningful internal links? |
| Rendering | Is important text present in raw HTML, rendered HTML or both? |
| Business owner | Who can approve a rewrite, merge, redirect, noindex or removal? |
4. Triage thin-page candidates by intent, not word count alone
Set a provisional threshold, then manually sample pages above and below it. Look for pages that answer a narrow question completely, pages whose main content failed to render, and pages that contain only boilerplate. Keep a record of exceptions so the threshold becomes a documented site rule rather than an unexplained bulk filter.
5. Choose one action per URL group
- Improve: add original evidence, clearer answers, useful media, comparisons, maintenance information or a stronger next step when the page has a distinct purpose and demand.
- Merge: combine overlapping pages into the strongest resource when one intent is being split across several weak URLs. Redirect retired URLs when an equivalent destination exists and review inbound links and campaigns first.
- Canonicalize: use a canonical for legitimate variants where a preferred representative is clear. Verify that the canonical target is indexable and materially equivalent.
- Noindex: keep a page accessible for users but out of search when it has a valid operational purpose and should not compete. Confirm that internal links and platform rules support the choice.
- Remove: delete a page only after checking traffic, conversions, backlinks, legal retention and a relevant redirect destination. A missing page with no substitute should return the correct status rather than being redirected indiscriminately.
6. Re-crawl and verify the implementation
After changes, crawl again to confirm status codes, canonical targets, hreflang, internal links, rendered text, sitemap membership and duplicate groups. Monitor impressions, clicks and conversions over a suitable period; an issue count falling is not proof that users are better served.
How to choose between the four tools
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Exact, near and semantic duplicate investigation with tunable thresholds | Screaming Frog SEO Spider | Its documented MD5, near-match and semantic workflows expose the raw URL-level evidence. |
| Site-specific thin-page rules and visual pattern discovery | Sitebulb | Configurable word-count heuristics and template/path/depth views make clusters easier to explain. |
| Duplicate checks alongside search and Google-connected data | Ahrefs Site Audit | HTML and page-text inspection can be read beside performance and canonical context. |
| A team already operating projects and reporting in Semrush | Semrush Site Audit | It surfaces similarity inside the existing workflow, provided body content is reviewed. |
| A large remediation program involving editors and developers | The crawler your team can export and assign from reliably | Actionability, ownership and repeatable verification matter more than an isolated feature count. |
Using two tools can be reasonable when their roles are distinct—for example, a deep Screaming Frog duplicate export followed by performance validation in Ahrefs—but avoid creating conflicting “truth” lists. Select one system of record for the URL decision and document why exceptions were kept.
Common failure modes and fixes
Applying a universal word-count cutoff
Symptom: valuable short pages are flagged or every long page is assumed healthy.
Fix: establish a threshold from representative samples, segment it by page type and require an intent review.

Deleting every duplicate
Symptom: regional, language, paginated or campaign URLs disappear.
Fix: check canonical, hreflang, pagination, audience and business purpose before merging or removing.
Confusing boilerplate similarity with useless content
Symptom: a template report shows high similarity even though each page has distinct specifications or data.
Fix: compare the unique body block and inspect the tool’s raw-versus-rendered view where available.
Ignoring orphan and sitemap signals
Symptom: low-value URLs continue to be discovered or presented as priorities after an edit.
Fix: update internal links, XML sitemaps and CMS rules, then re-crawl.
Recommended Free Tools
Choosing an action without measuring value
Symptom: indexable URL counts improve but leads or useful visits fall.
Fix: check impressions, clicks, conversions, backlinks and redirects before and after each URL-group decision.
Trusting a similarity score as a verdict
Symptom: an 85% or other percentage triggers an automatic merge.
Fix: treat the percentage as a detection condition; read the pages and decide based on intent and unique value.
Bottom-line recommendations
- Choose Screaming Frog SEO Spider for the most granular duplicate work and export-driven investigations.
- Choose Sitebulb when configurable thin-page heuristics and visual explanations will help editors understand patterns.
- Choose Ahrefs Site Audit when duplicate and low-quality checks must be evaluated beside search performance and canonical context.
- Choose Semrush Site Audit when Semrush is already your team’s operating system and you will inspect unique body text rather than act on similarity alone.
Whichever crawler you select, the durable process is the same: detect, inspect intent and technical relationships, measure business value, choose a documented action, and re-crawl to verify it.
