For an ordinary SDR video loop, use Rec. 709, 8-bit SDR, and preserve the source video’s intended color grade. Do not switch SDR footage to HDR or add a blanket saturation or contrast boost. Use HDR settings only when the video itself is genuine HDR and the encoder and stream are configured to carry matching HDR signals.
Recommended settings for an SDR 4K60 loop
YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies “Color space: Rec. 709 for SDR” and supports frame rates up to 60 fps. For a standard SDR source, configure the encoder to interpret and output the footage as Rec. 709 at 8-bit. The source, encoder, and stream should agree about the signal; a color-space mismatch can make playback look washed out, oversaturated, or otherwise unlike the original.
- Color space: Rec. 709.
- Bit depth: 8-bit for SDR.
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps; use 60 fps when that matches the source and intended stream.
- Scan and pixel shape: Progressive scan and square pixels.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
For H.264 at 2160p60, YouTube’s English live encoder settings table lists 35 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. For AV1 and HEVC/H.265, that table displays a 10–40 Mbps range at the same resolution and frame rate. The codec columns and wording can vary across localized versions, so confirm the applicable value in YouTube Help and the Live Control Room for your ingest setup rather than treating one bitrate as universal. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Rec. 709 or HDR: choose from the source
HDR is not a color-enhancement switch for SDR footage. An SDR master should remain SDR; relabeling or converting it as HDR does not create genuine highlight or color information and can produce incorrect-looking output. Use HDR only if the loop was produced as HDR and the complete encoding path preserves its correct signal metadata.

| Setting | SDR loop | Genuine HDR loop |
|---|---|---|
| Source | SDR master or output | HDR-produced source compatible with PQ or HLG |
| Color signaling | Rec. 709 | BT.2020 primaries and matrix, with PQ or HLG transfer matching the source |
| Bit depth | 8-bit | 10-bit |
| Codec | YouTube lists H.264, HEVC/H.265, and AV1 for live encoding | YouTube’s HDR guidance requires HEVC/H.265; it does not support AV1 for HDR |
| Encoder path | Standard live encoder setup | HDR-capable encoder and an appropriately configured YouTube stream |
YouTube’s HDR workflow uses HEVC/H.265 and 10-bit output. Its OBS walkthrough calls for a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG; HLG is recommended in that workflow. Choose PQ or HLG to match the actual source, not by trial as a way to make an SDR loop look more vivid. The stream’s primaries, matrix, and transfer characteristics must describe what the encoder is actually sending. Consult YouTube’s HDR streaming guidance for the relevant workflow details.
Check the loop before going live
YouTube recommends testing before a live event, including audio and movement similar to the planned stream, and monitoring stream health while live. For a loop, inspect representative sections rather than only the opening frame: include dark gradients, bright highlights, and highly saturated scenes. Check audio continuity and verify the result on an HDR-capable display if the stream is HDR. This scene-by-scene inspection is a practical check, not a prescribed YouTube test protocol.

If the stream looks wrong, first compare the source’s actual color format with the encoder’s color-space, bit-depth, and transfer settings. Confirm that an SDR file is not being signaled as HDR and that HDR metadata has not been replaced with settings for a different transfer function. Then review the live stream’s health and playback again after correcting the mismatch.
4K60 latency and loop operation
YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable for 4K/2160 streams; 4K streams use normal latency. This affects how quickly viewers see the live feed, not the Rec. 709 or HDR choice.

A looping video can be sent through a live encoder, but keeping a channel live continuously also requires a playback and streaming process that remains available. YouTube’s encoder creation help mentions Gyre for continuous broadcasts in 4K at 30 or 60 fps; that mention does not establish its color controls or suitability for every workflow. See YouTube’s encoder setup help.
