For a low-bandwidth YouTube Live stream, use AV1 or H.265/HEVC if your encoder and ingest workflow support either; otherwise, H.264 is supported. Start by comparing YouTube’s recommended rates for 480p30 and 720p30 with your connection’s sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends 3 Mbps for AV1/HEVC at 480p30 and 6 Mbps at 720p30, versus 4 Mbps and 8 Mbps for H.264. These are published ingest recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection will remain stable around the clock.
Choose a codec and resolution your connection can sustain
YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 as supported codecs for RTMP/RTMPS ingest. Its latency guidance says AV1 or HEVC provide the best quality and stability at a given bitrate. That advantage only helps if your encoder and workflow can send the codec; H.264 remains a supported fallback.
For a constrained connection, compare 480p30 and 720p30 first. YouTube’s current bitrate table distinguishes its minimum figures from its recommended figures. The recommended rate is the practical target to test; a listed minimum is not the recommended setting. Figures below are Mbps from YouTube / Google Help, accessed October 3, 2026; the page does not show a publication year.
| Resolution / frame rate | AV1 or H.265 minimum | AV1 or H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 360p30 | 0.3 | 3 | 0.4 | 4 |
| 480p30 | 0.3 | 3 | 0.4 | 4 |
| 720p30 | 2 | 6 | 3 | 8 |
| 720p60 | 2 | 6 | 3 | 8 |
| 1080p30 | 4 | 10 | 5 | 14 |
| 1080p60 | 4 | 12 | 6 | 17 |
For the lowest recommended ingest rate among these options, YouTube’s table points to 360p30 or 480p30: 3 Mbps with AV1/HEVC or 4 Mbps with H.264. At 720p30, its recommendations rise to 6 Mbps or 8 Mbps, respectively. Whether a connection can sustain a rate depends on actual upload performance and the stream itself; YouTube advises testing rather than prescribing a universal upload-headroom percentage.

Set the encoder for YouTube Live
YouTube’s published encoder guidance provides a starting configuration. The precise controls and labels depend on the encoder you use.
- Protocol: RTMPS is YouTube’s recommendation; RTMP/RTMPS ingest is supported.
- Video codec: AV1, H.265/HEVC or H.264.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps. Choose 30 fps when it suits the content and desired motion quality, since the lower-resolution 30 fps settings offer lower recommended rates than higher-resolution options.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3; its advanced settings include 128 Kbps stereo audio.
- SDR color: Rec. 709, 8-bit.
Test upload capacity and the actual stream
- Check sustained upload performance. Run a speed test on the connection and device you plan to use. Compare the measured upload performance with YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate for your chosen codec, resolution and frame rate.
- Configure the encoder. Select the supported codec and RTMPS where available, then set CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, the target bitrate, resolution and frame rate. Set audio to a supported format.
- Run a representative pre-stream test. Include audio and movement similar to the real stream. YouTube Help specifically recommends testing with audio and video movement like those planned for the live stream.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and messages. Monitor them during the test and the stream; a nominal bitrate setting alone does not show whether the live ingest is healthy.
Understand latency and buffering tradeoffs
YouTube describes low latency as a balance for streams with limited audience interaction. It says most viewers of a low-latency stream experience less than 10 seconds of latency. Ultra-low latency is aimed at highly interactive streams; YouTube says most viewers experience less than five seconds, but warns that this mode may increase buffering and that network ingest problems affect viewers more.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
For a 24/7 stream that does not depend on real-time conversation, the lower-latency modes are optional rather than a bitrate fix. Choose a mode with its buffering tradeoff in mind, and validate it under the conditions in which the stream will run.
What 24/7 operation changes—and what YouTube does not specify
YouTube’s cited encoder and stream-management guidance does not provide a separate bitrate profile, uptime target or reconnect specification for a stream running continuously for 24 hours or longer. The ordinary ingest recommendations therefore should not be read as a promise of uninterrupted operation. Test the actual long-running setup and monitor stream health; the cited guidance does not establish how any particular connection or encoder will recover from a prolonged outage.
