For a technically capable creator who wants cost-conscious object storage, Backblaze B2 is a strong starting point. Google Cloud Storage is a better fit when storage is part of a managed media workflow that also uses processing and CDN delivery. Neither is a 24/7 YouTube playout system by itself: storage holds your files; an encoder or streaming service must send the live feed to YouTube.

The right choice depends on how much you store, how often files are read, where those reads happen, whether a CDN is in front of the bucket, and what tools you can operate. Keep a separate local archive, too: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.

Which cloud storage is best for a 24/7 YouTube stream?

Choose storage for the way your video assets are stored and accessed—not on the assumption that a bucket will play them out to YouTube. Backblaze B2 is worth evaluating for an active object-storage origin when you can configure the tools that read and deliver the files. Google Cloud Storage suits a broader managed media workflow where storage, processing, networking, and CDN delivery are designed together.

These are conditional recommendations, not a universal price or performance ranking. No workload-specific speed or reliability measurements are established here, and the actual cost depends on stored capacity, read traffic, region, egress route, processing, and caching.

Option Good fit Important limitation or cost consideration
Backblaze B2 Active object storage for a creator or team able to configure file access and delivery. Its S3-compatible service publishes an included egress allowance. It stores files; it does not provide complete YouTube playout. Model stored data, outgoing reads, and whether transfer uses an eligible partner route. Backblaze’s current pricing page lists a starting price of $6.95 per TB per month, free egress up to 3× average monthly stored data, and $0.01/GB above that threshold outside eligible routes. Rates and route eligibility can change, so confirm current terms for your region and setup.
Google Cloud Storage A managed media workflow that combines storage with processing, networking, and CDN delivery. Google identifies streaming video as a standard-storage use. Cost depends on storage, processing, network use, region, and optional caching. Google’s media guidance recommends a CDN for customer reads in content-serving workloads; storage price alone is not a meaningful delivery-cost comparison.
Wasabi Video object storage where the actual egress pattern fits the provider’s pricing assumptions, potentially with CDN caching. Wasabi cautions that its model is not suitable when video egress exceeds the amount stored. Check current minimum-duration and other terms directly before choosing.
Google Drive for desktop Personal or collaborative file access when desktop streaming or mirroring is the need. Google says mirroring is faster for work involving extensive writing, video editing, or high-resolution photo editing. The reviewed guidance does not establish Drive as an unattended, resilient 24/7 YouTube playout system.

How to compare total cost

Estimate the expected monthly stored capacity and outgoing data, then include request or processing charges, delivery region, CDN cache behavior, workflow integrations, and the skills needed to keep the feed running. A continuously delivered popular video can incur a very different cost from a rarely accessed archive, even when both have the same storage size.

For B2, the published figures above are starting pricing and an allowance, not a quote for a particular workload. Calculate whether your expected reads fit the allowance and verify the applicable transfer route and terms before committing. For Google Cloud Storage and Wasabi, use the provider’s current pricing and terms for your specific configuration; no comparable workload-specific total is established here.

Can you stream a video directly from cloud storage to YouTube?

Not from storage alone. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires streaming software or another playout system to send video to YouTube using the Live server URL and stream key. A bucket or cloud drive can be the source of the video file, but it does not by itself encode, schedule, or transmit a continuous live feed.

For a do-it-yourself setup, the operator must connect the stored assets to an encoder or playout service, configure the YouTube destination, and keep that playout process running. If you serve video reads from a cloud bucket to delivery clients, Google’s media guidance recommends putting a CDN in front of the bucket. A CDN can improve latency and bandwidth efficiency and reduce delivery costs through caching; it does not replace the encoder or send the YouTube live feed by itself.

How to plan a reliable 24/7 workflow

  1. Keep master and loop-ready files in suitable storage. Choose based on access pattern, capacity, region, and expected reads rather than storage price alone.
  2. Configure a separate encoder or streaming service. Set it to send the actual feed to YouTube using the Live server URL and stream key from YouTube’s encoder workflow. Protect the stream key as a credential and avoid exposing it in public logs or shared settings.
  3. Add a CDN when the delivery design serves repeated reads. For content-serving reads from a cloud bucket, Google recommends CDN delivery so cache hits can reduce repeated origin downloads.
  4. Monitor the live output and the recording. YouTube advises monitoring stream audio and video quality. Verify independently that any local archive file is growing, rather than assuming the YouTube archive will be sufficient.
  5. Retain a separate local archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its guidance states: “We recommend recording a local archive as a backup.”

A local archive is a backup destination, not a cloud delivery method. Use a local disk or another independently retained copy that you can verify, and set retention according to how much footage you need to recover.

What to check before going live

  • Copyright and permissions: Make sure you have rights to the video and audio you broadcast. A long-running playlist does not exempt a channel from copyright rules.
  • Originality and channel policies: Repeated or reused material can raise monetization and policy questions even when a stream is technically stable. Review YouTube’s current rules for your channel and content before building the schedule.
  • Key and destination: Confirm the correct YouTube live event, server URL, and stream key are configured in the encoder or service. Treat the key as sensitive and rotate it if it is exposed.
  • Storage and delivery costs: Estimate recurring reads, not just the initial upload. Use CDN caching where appropriate and confirm provider pricing, egress routes, and regional terms.
  • Archive retention: Check both the local recording and the cloud asset copy. A YouTube archive is not a dependable sole backup for a feed running longer than 12 hours.

Troubleshooting a cloud-stored 24/7 feed

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The video is in the bucket, but YouTube is not live. Storage is not connected to an encoder or playout process, or the YouTube destination is not configured. Confirm an active encoder or streaming service is sending the feed to the correct Live server URL and stream key.
The stream stops after an interruption. The playout process may not restart after a disconnect, or the service may lack recovery behavior. Check the encoder or service’s reconnection and recovery settings, then monitor the restarted output in YouTube.
Delivery costs are higher than expected. Repeated uncached reads, egress, processing, or regional charges may dominate storage charges. Review outgoing data and cache-hit behavior, confirm the delivery route and region, and recalculate with current provider terms.
The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. Use and verify a separate local recording; check that the archive file is growing during the broadcast.
The broadcast is live but has audio or video quality issues. Problems may be in the source asset, encoder, connection, or YouTube ingest path. Monitor the stream’s audio and video quality and inspect the actual output rather than relying only on the stored source file.
