The best cloud backup service depends less on the advertised storage limit than on what you need to protect. IDrive is the strongest all-round choice for households with several computers, phones, NAS devices, or cloud accounts. Backblaze is easier for one computer, while Acronis True Image is the better fit for full-disk images and bare-metal recovery.
This comparison focuses on genuine backup rather than file synchronization. Prices and promotional offers can change by country, billing term, and renewal status, so treat the figures below as current reference prices and confirm the final checkout total.

Why IDrive stands out
- One subscription can cover multiple computers instead of charging separately for every machine.
- It can combine online backup with local backup and basic disaster-recovery features.
- It supports NAS backup and cloud-application backup in addition to ordinary PC and Mac files.
- It offers AES-256 encryption and an optional private encryption key.
A private key gives IDrive less ability to access your data, but it also creates a recovery risk: if you lose the key, the backed-up data may be impossible to decrypt. Store the key in a password manager and in a separate offline record.
IDrive limitations
The desktop interface exposes many settings without always making their relationships clear. Reviewers have also reported a dated user experience, basic rather than advanced imaging, and installation problems with some QNAP setups.
NAS owners should distinguish between the available workflows. Direct Synology and QNAP integrations are listed as add-ons priced at $40 per TB per year. Backing up a NAS through a mapped drive in the desktop application is a different arrangement and should not be assumed to include the same features or pricing.
Choose IDrive if: you have several computers, need NAS or cloud-service coverage, or want one account that can handle both cloud and local backup.
2. Backblaze Computer Backup: best for simple one-computer backup
Backblaze Computer Backup is the easiest recommendation for a person who wants to install a client, select a computer, and let it continuously back up user data. Its plan is effectively unlimited for the licensed computer, including connected external drives under the service’s rules.
The current listed price is $9 per month, $99 per year, or $189 for two years. The important phrase is per computer. A Personal Backup subscription does not give one household unlimited computers. Two computers require two computer licenses.
Retention and cloud-sync exclusions
Backblaze’s default version history is 30 days. One-year Version History is available at no additional charge, while Forever Version History costs $0.006 per GB per month for versions kept beyond one year. Longer retention matters if you discover corruption or ransomware well after the initial incident.
Windows users must also account for a recent behavior change. Backblaze’s Windows client excludes mount points and cache directories belonging to OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, and iDrive. You should not assume that a file is protected merely because it appears in a locally synchronized folder. Put critical files in a location Backblaze actually includes, or use a backup product with explicit support for that cloud service.
The Windows release-notes page lists client version 10.0.2.1047, with improvements including metadata validation, exclusion handling, private-key safety-freeze workflows, and fixes for installations stuck at “Initial Backup Paused.” Keeping the client current is particularly important when its inclusion and exclusion rules affect what gets uploaded.

Choose Backblaze if: you want the least complicated automatic backup for one Windows or Mac computer and do not need NAS, multi-computer, or full-disk imaging features.
3. Acronis True Image: best for full-system recovery
Acronis True Image is aimed at users who want more than a copy of personal files. It can create full-disk images, clone drives, back up files and folders, and restore a system to similar or different hardware. Higher plans also bundle anti-malware, ransomware protection, vulnerability scanning, and Microsoft 365 backup.
The current comparison page lists one-year starting prices of $49.99 for Essentials, $72.99 for Advanced, and $124.99 for Premium. Individual plans cover up to five PCs or Macs and unlimited mobile devices. Essentials includes no cloud storage; Advanced includes 50 GB, upgradeable to 500 GB; Premium includes 1 TB, upgradeable to 5 TB.

When an image backup matters
File backup is appropriate when you mainly need documents, photos, and other personal data. An image backup also captures the operating system, applications, settings, boot information, and other system components. That can reduce rebuilding time after a failed SSD, malware incident, or serious operating-system problem.
Acronis is therefore a better fit for a desktop owner who needs to replace a drive and return to a working system, or for someone who regularly clones disks before upgrades. It is not the cheapest choice for simple automatic file protection, particularly once cloud storage upgrades are added.
Subscription warning
Subscription editions require internet activation. If a trial or subscription ends, cloud data enters a grace period and can eventually become inaccessible and subject to deletion if the subscription is not renewed. Maintain a local copy of important images instead of treating the Acronis cloud as the only recovery location.
Choose Acronis if: you need bare-metal recovery, disk cloning, recovery to different hardware, or bundled security controls.

4. CrashPlan for Small Business: best retention controls for small teams
CrashPlan for Small Business provides unlimited storage and detailed retention controls, with pricing of about $10 per month per computer. It is not the former CrashPlan Home product: CrashPlan discontinued its consumer service in 2017, and the current product is designed for business endpoints.
CrashPlan supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, including Red Hat and Ubuntu, as well as external-drive backups. Two-factor authentication, scheduling, and extensive version-retention controls make it useful when a business must recover files from a long time ago rather than simply restore yesterday’s copy.

- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Retention needs configuration
Unlimited storage does not automatically mean unlimited access to every deleted file. CrashPlan documentation states that the default maximum deleted-file retention for Small Business is 90 days unless the retention setting is configured differently. A disconnected or replaced drive can be marked as deleted, and its contents may become unrecoverable after that window.
Before replacing a drive, check the device’s retention policy and confirm that the old drive is not about to age out. This is a practical failure mode that can defeat an otherwise well-configured backup.
Reviewers also report that the client can consume substantial system resources during backup. Scheduling and transfer throttling can reduce the effect, but a small office should test the client on its actual hardware and network. Phone and chat support are available during normal U.S. business hours Monday through Friday; email support is available around the clock but may take longer outside U.S. hours.
Choose CrashPlan if: you are protecting business endpoints, use Linux, or need granular retention rather than a simple consumer backup interface.
5. Carbonite Safe: best for one computer with unlimited-capacity plans
Carbonite Safe is designed around automatic backup for one Windows or Mac computer. Its personal plans offer unlimited storage, but the useful features differ considerably between tiers.
Current public annual prices are $95.99 for Basic, $131.99 for Plus, and $161.99 for Prime. Plus and Prime add external-hard-drive backup and automatic video backup. Prime also includes courier recovery service, which can be valuable when downloading a large recovery over a slow connection is impractical.
Carbonite’s file-selection catches
On Windows, files outside standard user folders may not be selected automatically. Basic also does not automatically select individual files larger than 4 GB. Plus and Prime allow automatic backup of files up to 100 GB. Video files are automatically selected only on Plus or Prime when they are inside a folder already selected for backup.
These rules make the initial setup worth checking rather than assuming that “unlimited” means “everything.” Open the Carbonite selection view after installation and verify that your photo, video, project, and external-drive locations are included.
Carbonite’s drawbacks include reported slow upload speeds, paid add-ons or tier restrictions for important features, and no current mobile apps to rely on for mobile backup or restoration.

Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, and similar services are primarily synchronization tools. They keep files available across devices by mirroring changes. That is convenient, but an accidental deletion, ransomware encryption, or corrupted file can be synchronized too.
A backup service should preserve earlier versions and deleted files according to a retention policy. It still needs configuration and testing, but its purpose is recovery rather than simply keeping folders identical.
Do not count a synced folder as an independent backup unless you have verified its versioning, deletion recovery, retention period, and protection against account takeover. Backblaze’s current Windows exclusions are a clear example of why assumptions about sync folders can be dangerous.
How to choose a cloud backup service
- Count computers, not just people. IDrive can cover multiple devices under one account, while Backblaze, Carbonite, and CrashPlan generally charge per computer.
- Measure the data you actually need to protect. A capped 5 TB or 10 TB plan may be excellent value, but it is not unlimited. Include external drives, NAS shares, videos, and virtual machines.
- Decide whether you need files or a complete system. Use a simpler file-backup service for personal data; choose Acronis when rebuilding an entire computer matters.
- Read the retention policy. Check how long deleted files and old versions remain. CrashPlan’s default 90-day deleted-file window and Backblaze’s 30-day default version history are materially different policies.
- Check cloud-sync behavior. Confirm whether OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive, Box, or other mounted locations are included. Never infer coverage from the folder’s appearance in File Explorer.
- Test a restore. Download several files, restore an older version, and verify that file names, permissions, and opening behavior are correct. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a tested recovery plan.
- Keep another copy. Use the 3-2-1 model: three copies of important data, on at least two types of storage, with one copy off-site. Cloud backup can provide the off-site copy, but it should not be the only copy.

FAQ
What is the best cloud backup service in 2026?
IDrive Personal is the best overall choice for most households because it supports multiple computers and devices, local backup, NAS, cloud applications, sharing, and versioned recovery. Backblaze is a better simple option for one computer.

Backblaze provides unlimited backed-up data for the computer covered by the subscription. It does not provide unlimited computers under one Personal Backup plan. On Windows, its current client also excludes mount points and cache directories for several cloud-sync providers.
Is cloud storage the same as cloud backup?
No. Cloud storage and synchronization services primarily mirror files between devices. Cloud backup is designed to retain previous versions and deleted files for recovery. Synchronization can replicate accidental deletions, corruption, or ransomware-encrypted files.
Should I use more than one backup method?
Yes. A cloud service should normally be one part of a 3-2-1 strategy: three copies of important data, stored on at least two types of media, with one copy off-site. Test restores from the cloud and keep a local copy of especially important files or system images.
The Bottom Line
For most people, choose IDrive Personal if you need to cover multiple devices or services. Choose Backblaze for uncomplicated unlimited backup of one computer, Acronis True Image for complete system images and cloning, CrashPlan for small-business retention requirements, and Carbonite Safe for one computer when its plan-specific file and drive limits fit your needs.
