For a simulator focused on 74-series chips, start with 74Sim. It is built around virtual 74-series breadboarding and advertises LS, HC and HCT families, alongside CMOS 4000-series parts and analysis tools. Its library is described as extensive, not complete: check for your exact IC before designing around it. For an open-source digital-design workflow with DIP-style chip layouts, consider Logisim Evolution with the separate Logi7400 library.
What a 7400-series simulator needs to do
“7400 series” describes a broad family of logic devices, not one uniform electrical technology. Classic 74xx parts use bipolar TTL; 74LS is low-power Schottky TTL, while 74HC and 74HCT are CMOS families with different input-threshold behavior. Other variants, including 74AC, 74ACT, 74F and 74ALS, have their own characteristics. A generic NAND-gate symbol may reproduce the truth table without representing a particular IC or its package pins.
It helps to distinguish two kinds of simulation:
- Logical simulation checks whether a circuit produces expected 0s and 1s. It suits truth tables, Boolean logic and many high-level digital designs.
- Electrical simulation considers quantities such as voltage, current, loading and device-specific timing. Do not assume a logic simulator provides this just because it shows a timing diagram or lets you select a chip family.
If you want to transfer a circuit to a breadboard, look for actual IC models, package pin numbering and power connections. If you are designing a larger digital system, abstract gates may be enough. If you need to check electrical limits, use suitable device models and the manufacturer’s datasheet.
Best direct match: 74Sim
74Sim is the clearest fit when you want to work with 74-series chips rather than assemble every function from abstract gates. Its official description advertises an extensive 74-series library, LS, HC and HCT family support, CMOS 4000-series devices, and additional components such as 555 timers, resistors, capacitors and inductors.

- Piece Count: 100
The simulator is organized around virtual circuit building. Its listed features include switches and push buttons, clocks, LEDs and seven-segment displays, local project save/load, example projects, and circuit, combinational-logic and timing analysis.
Check the exact chip before committing
“Extensive” does not mean every historical or uncommon device is available. Before building a project around a particular counter, ALU, decoder, display driver, multiplexer or shift register, look for its exact number in the component selector. Do not infer support for a part such as the 74181, 74138, 7447, 7490, 74151 or 74595 from the general library description.

Also check the family suffix. A 74LS part and a 74HC part may share a logic function and number while differing electrically. 74Sim advertises LS, HC and HCT support, but that does not by itself establish datasheet-level modeling of voltage, current, fan-out or timing.
Build a circuit in 74Sim
- Open the 74Sim simulator.
- Choose the required family, such as LS, HC or HCT, if the selector offers it, then search for the exact IC number.
- Place the chip and add suitable inputs, such as switches, push buttons or a clock.
- Add outputs such as LEDs, probes or a seven-segment display, then wire the circuit.
- Use the available circuit or timing-analysis tools to inspect behavior, and save the project locally when you want to keep it.
- Before wiring real hardware, compare every connection with the datasheet for the exact part and suffix.
Open-source desktop alternative: Logisim Evolution with Logi7400
Logisim Evolution is a general educational digital-logic simulator. To work with named 74-series devices, pair it with the separate Logi7400 library. The library offers logical-symbol and DIP-style variants and lists devices across categories including gates, latches, flip-flops, encoders, decoders, arithmetic circuits, counters and registers.

- Piece Count: 400
The DIP-style option is useful when you want a diagram to reflect package pin numbering and the arrangement of multiple functions inside a real IC. It can expose wiring mistakes that an abstract gate symbol conceals. Still, check the library’s entry for the exact device: its documentation marks some parts as missing, without layouts or with incomplete documentation. The Logi7400 repository is archived, so it is not a safe assumption that gaps will be filled.
| Criterion | 74Sim | Logisim Evolution + Logi7400 |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | 74-series virtual breadboarding | General digital logic, extended with a separate IC library |
| 74-series workflow | Core focus; check the selector for your exact part | Library supplies logical-symbol and DIP-style variants; coverage varies by entry |
| Family information | Official site lists LS, HC and HCT | Varies by library implementation; check the relevant entry |
| Other strengths | Virtual board, selected passive parts and analysis tools | Expandable digital-design environment for larger logic systems |
| Main caution | Broad library claims do not confirm every chip or electrical model | Separate library is archived and has incomplete entries |
Other options, by what you need
| Tool | Good fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Atanua | Introductory, real-time visual logic simulation | Its feature description lists roughly 30 74-series chips, switches, LEDs, displays, colored signal wires and custom-part support. The download page includes old version history; do not treat it as the newest or most actively developed option without checking current availability. |
| CircuitVerse | Browser-based digital logic, classroom use and sharing | Its documented features include multi-bit wires, subcircuits and timing diagrams. The available documentation does not establish a comprehensive catalog of individually modeled 74xx ICs or physical DIP packages. |
| Falstad | Interactive analog and mixed-circuit demonstrations | It is useful for visualizing circuit behavior, but its official page does not establish a wide catalog of individually modeled 74-series chips. |
| IceChips Verilog | HDL, FPGA and testbench workflows | Provides Verilog models of common discrete logic devices, including 74LS, 74HC and 74HCT parts, with parameterized models and delay parameters. It is not a drag-and-drop virtual breadboard. |
| SPICE tool with suitable digital models | Electrical analysis | Use only after confirming that models for the exact parts and behaviors you need are available. A SPICE tool is not automatically a ready-made 74xx breadboard simulator. |
Choose by abstraction level, not popularity
- You want to place recognizable 74-series chips: try 74Sim first and confirm your exact part is present.
- You need DIP-style layouts in a general digital-design environment: try Logisim Evolution with Logi7400, after checking the library status for each device.
- You need browser access, timing diagrams or sharing for a class: CircuitVerse is a good digital-logic option, but verify whether its abstraction is sufficient for your assignment.
- You want simple real-time teaching visuals: Atanua may suit you if its documented chip catalog includes the devices you need.
- You want to watch analog behavior: Falstad is a more natural fit than a 74-series-focused tool.
- You need HDL or device-delay parameters: consider Verilog models such as IceChips.
- You need voltage and current behavior: use an electrical simulator with suitable models rather than assuming a logic simulator covers it.
Validate the design before breadboarding
A successful logic simulation is not proof that a physical circuit will work. A simplified model can hide fan-out problems, slow edges, bus contention, floating inputs, missing pull-ups, LED loading and incompatible voltage thresholds. Timing diagrams are also model-dependent; their presence does not establish datasheet accuracy.

- Confirm the part number and suffix. Check that the model matches the intended device and family, not just a similar logic function.
- Verify the package pinout. Match signal names and pin numbers to the datasheet for the exact device. The Texas Instruments SN7400 datasheet illustrates the device-specific information to check for that part.
- Check power and ground. Make sure supply pins are accounted for even if an abstract symbol hides them.
- Resolve every input. Check unused inputs, active-low controls, reset, preset, enable and chip-select pins. Do not leave real-device inputs floating unless the datasheet explicitly permits it.
- Check clocking. Confirm the clock edge and polarity expected by the device, along with reset and enable behavior.
- Check output type and loading. Determine whether outputs are open collector and whether pull-ups or other external components are required. Avoid connecting two outputs together unless the circuit is designed for that arrangement.
- Match display wiring. Confirm whether a seven-segment display is common-anode or common-cathode and whether its driver matches.
- Check the model’s limits. If a part is absent, incomplete or more idealized than your task allows, choose a different tool or validate separately against component documentation.
For LS-to-HC or other family combinations, compare the exact datasheet voltage and current limits at the intended supply conditions. Similar truth tables do not guarantee electrical compatibility.
