The right Chrome extension depends on what you want to improve: BetterTTV or FrankerFaceZ for Twitch chat customization, Enhancer for Twitch and Kick utilities, Live Chat Overlay for putting YouTube chat on a broadcast scene, or Previews for a multi-platform viewing workflow. These tools do different jobs; the feature descriptions below are from their store listings or developers, not a hands-on comparative test.
Choose an extension by the job you need done

Platform support and features can change. Check the current Chrome Web Store listing or developer page before installing, and confirm that the extension supports the platform and browser workflow you actually use.
For emotes and a more customizable Twitch chat
BetterTTV: Twitch plus limited YouTube support
The Chrome Web Store listing describes BetterTTV as adding global and per-channel custom emotes, an improved emote menu, keyword tools, split chat lines, and options to see deleted messages and links. It also lists anonymous chat, automatic claims for channel points, drops and moments, and controls to hide interface clutter. The listing identifies version 7.7.25, updated July 16, 2026.
BetterTTV’s YouTube support has qualifications: its listing says YouTube requires an additional permission and that not all settings work there. Review the requested permission and the current listing details before enabling it.

Its listing identifies version 4.82.0.31, updated September 5, 2026. Choose it when Twitch chat and channel-specific customization are the main need; the listing does not describe it as a YouTube or Kick tool.

Enhancer: chat features plus streamer controls
The Chrome Web Store listing describes Enhancer as a free, open-source extension for Twitch and Kick. Its listed features include chat attachments and enhanced mentions on both platforms, stream latency and VOD timing, and Twitch-specific functions such as chatter information, streamer pins, channel shortcuts and clip-download controls. The listing identifies version 5.3.0, updated September 24, 2026.

The listing also says the developer discloses that it will not collect or use data. That is the developer’s disclosure, not an independent privacy audit. As with any extension, review its current permissions and privacy information before installation.
For putting YouTube live chat on a broadcast scene
Live Chat Overlay: a chat display, not a full streaming system
The Chrome Web Store describes Live Chat Overlay as a way to display YouTube live chat as a browser source in OBS or other software. It also says the overlay can be full-screened and keyed through compatible video systems. Listed display options include customization, highlighted words and automatic message hiding.

This is the closest fit in this shortlist when the goal is to show audience messages inside a production layout. It addresses the chat display; it is not a replacement for broadcasting software, a moderation service, or a system that keeps a stream running when your computer is off.

Previews: viewing conveniences described by its developer
The developer describes Previews as a free browser extension for Twitch, YouTube and Kick. Its advertised bundle includes hover previews, favorites, multi-stream and multi-chat, picture-in-picture, screenshots, clip downloading and stream recording. These are developer-described features rather than independently tested findings.

Recording or downloading can raise platform-rule, creator-rights and local-law questions. Before using those functions, check the rules that apply to the platform and content, and make sure you have the necessary permission. Do not assume a feature’s presence in an extension makes every use authorized.
Browser extensions are not the same as streaming and moderation services
A browser enhancement changes what you see or do in a browser. A chat bot, overlay toolkit, donation service or clipping platform can serve a broader production or channel-management role. YouTube Help lists Nightbot for chat automation and moderation, StreamElements as a toolkit including overlays, chatbot, tipping and post-stream reports, Streamlabs for on-stream notifications and donations, and YuzzitPro for clipping highlights during a livestream. These are services, not necessarily Chrome extensions.

- Start with the platform. For Twitch emotes and chat customization, compare BetterTTV and FrankerFaceZ. For Twitch/Kick chat utilities, inspect Enhancer. For YouTube chat on an OBS scene, look at Live Chat Overlay. For multi-platform viewing conveniences, assess Previews.
- Check the current listing. Confirm the supported sites, browser compatibility, latest feature description and update information. Listing details are snapshots and may change.
- Review permissions before adding it. Grant only permissions you understand and need. In particular, BetterTTV notes that YouTube requires an additional permission and that some settings do not work there.
- Test one extension at a time. Open the relevant platform and verify the specific feature you wanted. If something fails, disable the extension and check whether the issue disappears before changing other browser settings.
- Reassess privacy and content rules. Read the extension’s privacy disclosure and the relevant platform rules, especially before recording or downloading content.

The store listings and developer descriptions establish what each extension says it supports, but they do not provide a standardized comparison of speed, reliability, privacy or streamer outcomes. Their update dates and feature lists should be treated as time-sensitive snapshots, not proof that one extension performs better than another. Choose by fit, then verify the current listing and test the feature in your own workflow.
