All three let you make exceptions for individual sites. Your choice mainly depends on whether you want a true recolored theme, a scheduled multi-mode system, or a lightweight inversion filter.

3. Dark mode / night reader: best for simple inversion
Dark mode / night reader offers five modes: inversion with reduced contrast, inversion with normal contrast, reduced contrast only, disabled, and a mode that inverts text and images. Per-site settings let you leave selected domains unchanged.
When its simpler approach helps
- Choose it when you want a small set of obvious modes rather than many theme controls.
- Use reduced contrast when full inversion makes photographs, icons or colored text look unnatural.

How to choose the right extension
Choose Dark Reader when
- You want brightness, contrast, sepia and font controls.
- You need frequent per-site exceptions.
- You want the extension to follow your operating-system dark-mode preference.
Choose Night Eye when
- You need scheduled switching or several rendering modes.
- You read PDFs in Chrome and want the listed PDF dark-mode support.
- You are comfortable adjusting custom CSS for difficult sites.
Choose Dark mode / night reader when
- You prefer straightforward inversion and contrast presets.
- You want site settings stored locally and minimal configuration.
- You do not need the scheduling, PDF or extensive theme controls listed by Night Eye.
Install and configure one safely
- Open the Chrome Web Store and search for the exact extension name and publisher. Check the current version, update date, permissions and privacy section before selecting Add to Chrome.
- Pin the extension from Chrome’s Extensions menu so its controls are easy to reach.
- Start with the default mode on a few representative sites: a news page, a web application, an image-heavy page and a PDF.
- Set brightness and contrast gradually. Extremely low brightness can hide borders, disabled controls and validation messages.
- Add exceptions for sites that already provide a native dark theme or whose charts, maps, editors or checkout screens render incorrectly.
- Disable any second dark-mode extension before testing further. Overlapping content filters are a common source of broken colors and slow pages.
- For Night Eye, create a schedule only after confirming your browser or operating-system time zone and color-scheme setting are correct.
Common problems and fixes
Images or videos look inverted
Switch from a full inversion mode to a theme or filtered mode, then add the site to your exceptions if the media remains wrong. Dark Reader’s detection of already-dark sites can also prevent unnecessary transformation.
Text is unreadable on one site
Raise contrast slightly, lower sepia, or disable the extension for that domain. In Night Eye, custom CSS can target a specific component; in the simpler extension, choose a reduced-contrast mode.
A page is slow after enabling dark mode
Test with other extensions disabled, especially ad blockers and additional appearance tools. Remove unnecessary per-site rules and compare the site with the dark extension switched off. The listings do not provide independent performance benchmarks, so treat any speed difference as site- and configuration-specific.

Chrome’s own dark theme changed but pages did not
Confirm that the extension’s system or browser color-scheme integration is enabled. A browser-level dark interface does not automatically recolor every website.
PDF remains light
Night Eye is the only option here whose listing explicitly describes supported PDF dark mode. Support can vary by PDF viewer and document, so test the files you actually use.
Privacy information is unclear
Read the current Chrome Web Store privacy panel and the developer’s disclosure before installation. “Runs locally,” “does not sell data” and “does not upload data” are different statements; none is an independent audit.
