There is no single best glycerol catalyst. The right choice depends on whether you want hydrogen, acrolein, lactic acid, 1,2-propanediol or 1,3-propanediol, and on whether the process is steam reforming, aqueous-phase reforming, dehydration, oxidation or hydrogenolysis.

For hydrogen by steam reforming, nickel is the low-cost benchmark; among the supports compared in one review, Ni/SiO2 was the most stable. For wet-feed aqueous-phase reforming, supported noble metals generally resist coke better, although bimetallic and promoted nickel systems can deliver much higher rates at lower raw-material cost. Chemical manufacture requires a different objective: acid or bifunctional catalysts for acrolein, redox/basic catalysts for lactic acid, and carefully balanced metal–acid/base systems for the two propanediols.

What makes a glycerol catalyst “best”?

Glycerol conversion is not the same as a useful process. A catalyst can consume nearly all of the glycerol while producing methane, carbon monoxide, coke or a mixture of oxygenates that is difficult to separate. The practical winner is the material that delivers the desired product at acceptable selectivity, conversion, lifetime and cost under the intended reactor conditions.

Glycerol contains both carbon–carbon and carbon–oxygen bonds. Hydrogen production favors catalysts that cleave C–C bonds, activate water and promote the water-gas-shift reaction. The catalyst should avoid excessive methanation and secondary reactions that consume hydrogen. In contrast, value-added chemical routes deliberately preserve or transform selected C–O or C–C bonds, so acidity, basicity, oxidation state and hydrogenation function must be matched to one product.

Support properties matter as much as the metal. Acidity or basicity, redox capacity, oxygen vacancies, pore structure, dispersion and resistance to water can change the product slate. Loading, particle size, preparation method and pretreatment can also reverse the ranking of two catalysts with the same nominal composition.

Best catalysts for hydrogen from glycerol

Steam reforming: nickel is the cost benchmark

Steam reforming reacts glycerol with high-temperature steam to produce a hydrogen-rich gas. Nickel is widely used because it activates C–C bonds at much lower cost than platinum-group metals. Its weaknesses are equally important: carbon deposition, nickel sintering and methanation can reduce hydrogen yield and shorten operating life.

A comparison of Ni/Al2O3, Ni/ZrO2 and Ni/SiO2 identified Ni/SiO2 as the most stable of those three formulations. A study covered by a 2021 review reported 4.82 mol H2 per mol glycerol at 650 °C, with 15 wt% nickel and a water:glycerol ratio of 15. That figure belongs to the stated test conditions; it is not a universal yield for every nickel catalyst or reactor.

Nickel–copper and nickel–cobalt alloys are common ways to address nickel’s failure modes. The second metal can reduce coke formation, methanation and sintering while retaining part of nickel’s C–C-cleavage activity. The optimum composition is condition-dependent: more promoter is not automatically better, because dilution can also reduce the active nickel ensemble needed for reforming.

Aqueous-phase reforming: lower temperature and wet-feed tolerance

Aqueous-phase reforming (APR) operates in subcritical water at approximately 100–250 °C, according to a 2024 Springer Nature review. Because the feed remains in water, APR can process wet glycerol streams without the energy-intensive drying required by many gas-phase routes. The trade-off is that high-pressure liquid-water operation changes catalyst stability, mass transfer and product distribution.

Noble metals generally resist coke better than nickel, manganese and copper in APR. Platinum, ruthenium and related metals can therefore be attractive when long runs and low carbon deposition matter more than the initial metal price. Their loading should be minimized without sacrificing dispersion, because a small amount of a well-dispersed noble metal can outperform a larger amount of a poorly dispersed one.

A technoeconomic estimate cited in the 2024 review placed glycerol APR at $0.055 per kilogram, compared with $0.110 per kilogram for steam or autothermal reforming. These are modeled process estimates reported by that analysis, not a guaranteed plant cost; feed purity, pressure equipment, hydrogen separation and catalyst replacement can materially change the result.

Supported and bimetallic examples with reported durability

Several reported formulations illustrate why activity and durability must be evaluated together:

Catalyst or comparison Reported result How to interpret it
Pt/CoAl2O4 More than 95% glycerol conversion maintained for 100 hours Strong evidence of durability in the cited test; conditions still determine transferability.
Monometallic comparator in the same review Conversion declined from 90% to below 60% Shows why an initial conversion measurement can be misleading.
Ni/Al2O3 versus Cu-promoted Ni/Al2O3 Reported hydrogen rate increased from 180 to 353 mmol H2 gcat−1 min−1 Promotion more than doubled the rate in that study; the space velocity and reactor conditions must be matched before comparison.
5%Pt–1%Rh/Al2O3 85,580 mmol H2 gcat−1 h−1 and 89% selectivity Reported under the study conditions in the 2024 review.
5%Pt/Al2O3 comparator 42,625 mmol H2 gcat−1 h−1 and 69.9% selectivity The bimetallic formulation performed better in that direct comparison.

The Pt–Rh and Pt examples are not interchangeable with the nickel data: they use different temperatures, pressures, feed ratios, catalyst masses and reporting bases. Treat the values as within-study comparisons, not a league table spanning all reactors.

Choosing between steam reforming and aqueous-phase reforming

Decision factor Steam reforming Aqueous-phase reforming
Typical temperature High-temperature gas-phase operation; the cited nickel example used 650 °C. 100–250 °C in subcritical water.
Feed preparation Usually requires vaporization and substantial steam management. Can accept wet glycerol streams without drying.
Cost direction Nickel offers a low-cost catalyst option, but heat demand is significant. A cited estimate was $0.055/kg versus $0.110/kg for steam/autothermal reforming.
Main catalyst concern Coke, sintering and methanation. Water stability, leaching, pressure operation and residual carbon or oxygenate intermediates.
Best starting catalyst family Ni/SiO2, then promoted Ni–Cu or Ni–Co systems when deactivation is limiting. Well-dispersed supported noble metals when coke resistance and wet-feed operation justify their cost.

Choose steam reforming when high-temperature equipment and a low-cost nickel catalyst fit the process. Choose APR when avoiding feed drying is valuable and the project can support pressurized liquid-water equipment. In either case, run a time-on-stream test rather than selecting on the first conversion point.

How catalysts make value-added glycerol chemicals

Acrolein: dehydration needs controlled acidity

Acrolein is formed by removing water from glycerol. The reaction therefore needs acid functionality, but excessive acidity can promote polymerization, cracking, coke and a broad mixture of oxygenates. Acid or bifunctional metal–acid catalysts are the relevant design family.

When screening an acrolein catalyst, measure acrolein selectivity at the target conversion, not conversion alone. Record acid strength and density, glycerol partial pressure, contact time, steam dilution and time-on-stream behavior. A catalyst that initially produces a high acrolein fraction but rapidly accumulates carbon may be less useful than a slightly less active formulation that regenerates predictably.

Lactic acid: oxidation and rearrangement selectivity

Lactic acid production calls for redox and/or basic functionality rather than the strongly dehydrating environment used for acrolein. The catalyst must direct glycerol toward the lactate skeleton while limiting over-oxidation, decarbonylation and C–C fragmentation. In practical screening, report lactic-acid selectivity, carbon balance and the amount of tar or unidentified liquid products.

Water, oxygen or another oxidant changes both the catalyst oxidation state and the separation burden. Therefore, a catalyst should be selected together with the oxidant strategy and downstream recovery method, rather than evaluated as an isolated powder.

1,2-propanediol: selective hydrogenolysis

1,2-Propanediol is commonly targeted through hydrogenolysis, which combines hydrogenation with selective removal of one glycerol hydroxyl group. Tuned metal-plus-acid or metal-plus-base systems are used to control which C–O bond is cleaved. The challenge is avoiding over-hydrogenolysis to smaller alcohols and gases.

For this route, compare product selectivity at equal glycerol conversion and equal hydrogen pressure. A formulation that reaches high conversion only by producing substantial 1-propanol or ethylene glycol may be inferior to one with a lower conversion but much better 1,2-propanediol selectivity and a stable product slate.

1,3-propanediol: a more demanding positional selectivity problem

1,3-Propanediol requires cleavage and hydrogenation at a different position from 1,2-propanediol. The metal function, acid/base sites and reaction medium must therefore be tuned to favor the desired pathway rather than simply maximize hydrogenolysis. Catalyst families described for this purpose are bifunctional systems in which hydrogen activation and selective C–O bond transformation are coordinated.

Because small changes in acidity, basicity, solvent and temperature can shift the product ratio, report the 1,3-propanediol fraction alongside 1,2-propanediol, ethylene glycol, propanols and unconverted glycerol. Product distribution is the key decision metric.

Comparison criteria that prevent misleading rankings

  1. Define the target. State whether the objective is hydrogen yield, hydrogen rate, acrolein selectivity, lactic-acid yield, 1,2-propanediol selectivity or 1,3-propanediol selectivity.
  2. Match operating conditions. Compare only data collected at comparable temperature, pressure, water:glycerol ratio, catalyst loading, space velocity, feed concentration and reactor type.
  3. Use a consistent basis. Hydrogen may be reported per mole of glycerol, per gram of catalyst per minute or per gram per hour. Convert units before ranking.
  4. Measure carbon balance. Include gas, liquid and deposited carbon. High named-product selectivity with a poor carbon balance can hide unmeasured by-products.
  5. Separate activity from lifetime. Record the initial value and the value after a defined time on stream. The Pt/CoAl2O4 example that stayed above 95% conversion for 100 hours illustrates why durability deserves its own metric.
  6. Track deactivation mechanisms. Use post-run analysis to distinguish coke deposition, sintering, agglomeration and metal leaching.
  7. Include catalyst economics. Compare noble-metal loading, support cost, regeneration frequency, replacement cost and the value of lost product during downtime.
  8. Test feed impurities. Salts, sulfur, soaps, ash and residual fatty acids can poison sites, block pores or change the liquid-phase pH.

Why glycerol reforming catalysts deactivate

Coke deposition

Polymerizable oxygenates and incomplete reforming intermediates can form carbon on active sites. Coke blocks pores and metal surfaces, changes acidity and can increase pressure drop in a packed bed. Higher steam ratios, better dispersion, alloying and controlled regeneration can reduce the risk, but the useful remedy depends on the reactor and the type of carbon formed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sintering and agglomeration

Metal particles can grow under heat or hydrothermal conditions, reducing active surface area. Stronger metal–support interaction, confinement in an appropriate pore structure and moderated temperature can slow growth. A fresh-catalyst activity test cannot reveal this problem; compare particle size or dispersion before and after operation.

Leaching

Liquid water and acidic or basic oxygenates can dissolve or relocate active metals and promoters. Leaching changes both catalyst composition and product purity. Analyze the liquid effluent for metals and inspect the catalyst after the run, especially for APR and other aqueous processes.

Poisoning and feed effects

Impurities can occupy active sites or alter support acidity and basicity. Use a feed specification, guard bed or pretreatment step when necessary, and test realistic crude-glycerol compositions rather than only purified laboratory glycerol.

Designing a practical catalyst-screening program

Stage 1: establish a fair baseline

Run a conventional Ni/SiO2 steam-reforming catalyst for gas-phase hydrogen work, or a documented supported noble-metal formulation for APR. Keep the reactor, feed, analysis method and catalyst mass fixed while changing only one catalyst variable at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stage 2: add the function the baseline lacks

If nickel gives adequate conversion but deactivates rapidly, test Ni–Cu or Ni–Co promotion and compare carbon accumulation and post-run dispersion. If APR suffers from coke or loss of activity, evaluate a more coke-resistant noble-metal support. For chemical products, add or adjust acid, base or redox functionality according to the target rather than increasing total metal loading indiscriminately.

Stage 3: optimize selectivity before maximum conversion

Map temperature, residence time, water:glycerol ratio and hydrogen pressure where relevant. Identify the operating window that produces the desired molecule with an acceptable carbon balance. Maximum conversion at an unfavorable product distribution is not an optimization.

Stage 4: run durability and regeneration tests

Use a continuous reactor whenever the intended process is continuous. Include a multi-day time-on-stream test, controlled regeneration and at least one restart. Many value-added chemical studies use batch reactors, so batch activity should not be presented as proof of continuous commercial stability.

Stage 5: evaluate the complete process

Include vaporization or pressurization, hydrogen separation, liquid purification, catalyst replacement, regeneration emissions and waste handling. A catalyst with higher intrinsic activity may lose its process advantage if it requires expensive noble metal, frequent replacement or difficult product separation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Calling platinum universally best: platinum can resist coke and perform strongly in APR, but nickel is much less expensive and may be adequate with a suitable support or promoter. Correct the comparison by including catalyst loading and lifetime.
  • Choosing nickel from a single conversion value: nickel can deactivate through coke and sintering. Correct the choice by measuring time-on-stream conversion and post-run carbon.
  • Comparing hydrogen rates from unrelated papers: rates depend on units, reactor design and conditions. Correct this by matching the reporting basis and operating variables.
  • Using a reforming catalyst for a chemical target: a catalyst optimized for C–C cleavage will not automatically maximize acrolein or propanediol selectivity. Correct the design objective first.
  • Ignoring support chemistry: the support supplies acidity, basicity, redox capacity, oxygen vacancies and dispersion control. Correct the screening plan by characterizing the support, not only the metal.
  • Extrapolating batch data to a plant: batch studies may hide pressure drop, catalyst attrition and regeneration issues. Correct the claim by requiring continuous-reactor evidence for scale-up.
  • Buying a generic catalyst powder: nominal metal identity does not specify particle size, support, promoter, loading or pretreatment. Correct procurement by specifying the complete formulation and acceptance tests.

Decision guide: which catalyst family should you start with?

Your primary goal Starting family Critical measurement Main risk
Low-cost hydrogen by steam reforming Ni/SiO2; then Ni–Cu or Ni–Co promotion if needed Hydrogen yield, carbon balance and stable conversion Coke, sintering and methanation
Hydrogen from wet glycerol Supported noble metal for APR Hydrogen rate, selectivity and metal retention in water Noble-metal cost, leaching and pressure-equipment cost
Acrolein Acid or bifunctional metal–acid catalyst Acrolein selectivity and coke rate Over-dehydration, polymerization and deactivation
Lactic acid Redox/basic catalyst system Lactic-acid selectivity, carbon balance and oxidant efficiency Over-oxidation and complex liquid mixtures
1,2-propanediol Tuned metal–acid or metal–base hydrogenolysis catalyst 1,2-propanediol selectivity at equal conversion Over-hydrogenolysis and competing glycols or propanols
1,3-propanediol Highly tuned bifunctional hydrogenolysis system 1,3-to-1,2-propanediol ratio and lifetime Wrong-position C–O cleavage and broad product distribution

Bottom-line selection

Start with Ni/SiO2 when the job is economical high-temperature glycerol reforming, and investigate Ni–Cu or Ni–Co promotion when coke, methanation or sintering limits lifetime. For APR of wet feed, a supported noble metal is often the stronger durability starting point, with Pt/CoAl2O4 providing a reported example of more than 95% conversion maintained for 100 hours. Do not transfer that result to another reactor without matching conditions.

For chemicals, select by product pathway: acid or metal–acid functionality for acrolein, redox/basic functionality for lactic acid, and tuned metal–acid/base bifunctionality for 1,2-propanediol or 1,3-propanediol. The best catalyst is the one that maintains the required selectivity and carbon balance for the full campaign, not the one with the highest first-hour conversion.
