Choose by what must be found and how often you need its location. For a car that needs movement, geofence or trip alerts, use a dedicated GPS/cellular tracker. For luggage and ordinary belongings, a Bluetooth crowd-finding tag is usually smaller, cheaper to operate and easiest when it matches your phone ecosystem. For pets, use a purpose-built GPS/LTE tracker sized for the animal; Apple says AirTag is designed for objects, not pets.
Quick picks by use case

|---|---|---|---|
| Car with movement or geofence alerts | Dedicated GPS plus cellular | Spytec GL300 (battery powered); Brickhouse Security LiveWire Volt (hardwired) | Frequent location reports and alerts, but a subscription and cellular coverage are required. |
| Luggage or belongings | Bluetooth item tag | Apple AirTag (2nd generation); Tile Pro | Approximate last-detected location from nearby participating phones, not continuous GPS. |
| Dog or cat | Purpose-built GPS plus cellular pet tracker | Tractive DOG 6, DOG 6 XL, DOG XL Adventure and CAT 6 Mini | GPS determines the position and a cellular connection sends it to an app; subscription, coverage and regular charging are necessary. |
These are category recommendations rather than a laboratory ranking. The Spytec and LiveWire descriptions come from an independent automotive review; AirTag and Tractive specifications come from Apple and Tractive materials. Battery estimates, plan terms, coverage and retail availability can change, so verify current details before buying.
GPS, Bluetooth and cellular: the distinction that determines whether a tracker works
Bluetooth crowd-finding tags
An item tag normally does not calculate its own position from GPS satellites. Instead, it broadcasts a short-range Bluetooth signal. When a compatible phone passes nearby, that phone forwards an approximate location to the tag owner through a crowd network.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesApple describes Find My as a crowdsourced network of Apple devices that use Bluetooth to detect an accessory and report its approximate location. Tile uses the owner’s phone or another phone in the Tile/Life360 network in a similar detection-based model. A suitcase in a busy airport may be detected repeatedly; a tag in a rural field, a basement or a quiet parking lot may show an old location or none at all. The tag cannot create a fresh location update when no participating phone is within range.

Dedicated GPS/cellular trackers
A dedicated tracker receives signals from GPS satellites, calculates coordinates itself and sends those coordinates over a mobile network to an app or web account. That architecture supports live or frequent updates, geofences, movement alerts and location history, subject to the device’s settings, battery and network coverage.
Cellular service is an operating cost, not an optional technical detail. Tractive says its built-in SIM uses partner 2G/LTE networks and that the subscription pays the network fees. The vehicle examples reviewed by Car and Driver also require subscriptions. A GPS tracker can still calculate a position outside coverage, but it cannot deliver that position to you until it reconnects.
What “GPS tracker” should mean in this guide
People often use the phrase for every small locating tag. In a buying decision, reserve “GPS tracker” for a device that obtains satellite location, normally with cellular reporting. Call AirTag and Tile Pro Bluetooth item tags. This wording prevents an item tag’s last-seen location from being mistaken for continuous vehicle or pet monitoring.
Best trackers for cars
Start with the alert you need. If you want to know that a car moved, entered a zone or followed a route, a dedicated vehicle tracker is a stronger fit than an item tag. If you only want a way to identify where a parked car was last detected in a crowded area, an item tag can be a backup, but it lacks vehicle-focused controls.
Spytec GL300: portable, battery-powered tracking
Car and Driver reviewed the Spytec GL300 as a battery-powered vehicle GPS tracker. In that review it offered geofence alerts, an IPX5 water-resistance rating and a battery estimate of seven to 10 days under the review’s stated movement use, with up to 25 days in standby. Those figures are review findings, not a guarantee: reporting interval, temperature, cellular signal and movement all affect runtime.
Portability is the main advantage. You can move the unit between vehicles or place it temporarily without wiring into the car. The trade-off is charging. Plan a charging routine and secure the device so it does not slide under a seat, where a weak signal or an inaccessible power button can delay recovery. The review also describes a subscription requirement; treat the plan price as the term listed at the time of that review, not as a current quote.
LiveWire Volt: hardwired power
Car and Driver named Brickhouse Security’s LiveWire Volt its best hardwired option in its test. The review reported reliable geofence and other alerts, power from the vehicle battery and an IP67 rating. Hardwiring removes the recurring task of charging a separate battery, making it practical for a car that stays in service for long periods.

Installation is the cost of that convenience. A correct connection, suitable placement and protection of the wiring matter; use a qualified installer if you are not comfortable working on a vehicle’s electrical system. The reviewed unit also requires a subscription, and the plan prices in that article should be checked before purchase because service terms change.
Why an AirTag is not a replacement for a car tracker
You can place an AirTag in a car and see its last Find My detection, but it does not provide a vehicle tracker’s continuous cellular reporting, trip history or dedicated geofence controls. Its updates depend on nearby Apple devices. Use it as an object-finding aid, not as your primary solution for theft recovery, fleet oversight or driver-safety alerts.
Car-buying checklist
- Alert type: confirm that the app supports the movement, geofence, ignition or route alerts you actually need.
- Power: choose portable battery operation if you need to move the tracker; choose hardwiring if charging access is the bigger problem.
- Network: check the carrier coverage where the car is driven and stored, including garages and rural areas.
- Weather protection: an IP rating describes dust and water resistance, not immunity from improper mounting, flooding or impact.
- Service cost: budget for the recurring cellular plan in addition to the hardware.
- Consent and law: track a vehicle only with the owner’s authority and the knowledge required by your jurisdiction and situation.
Best trackers for luggage and belongings
AirTag (2nd generation): strongest fit for Apple households
Apple describes its second-generation AirTag as an item tracker for belongings such as luggage. When the tag is away from its paired iPhone, Bluetooth detections from other Apple devices can update its approximate location in Find My. That makes it particularly useful in airports, hotels and other places with many Apple devices.
The limitation is fundamental: it is a crowd-finding tag, not a self-reporting GPS unit. A tag inside a bag on a sparsely traveled route may not update until another compatible device comes near it. Apple also explicitly says AirTag is designed for objects, not people or pets; do not attach one as a substitute for a pet tracker.

Share Item Location for airline baggage recovery
Apple’s Share Item Location workflow lets you securely share an item’s location with participating third parties, including airlines that support the feature. The share expires after seven days or can be stopped by the owner. Apple says it has partnered directly with more than 50 airlines, but that does not mean every airline, airport or lost-bag case supports it.
Apple attributes figures from SITA to the feature: 26% fewer baggage delays and 90% fewer incidents of luggage being truly lost or unrecoverable. Apple did not identify the study year in its January 2026 announcement, so treat those as attributed statistics rather than a dated, independently verified benchmark.
Tile Pro: cross-platform alternative
Tile Pro works with Apple and Android phones. Car and Driver reports that its location updates occur when the owner’s phone or another device in the Tile/Life360 network detects the tag. This cross-platform reach is useful when a household does not share one phone ecosystem, but update frequency still depends on network participation in the places your bag visits.

Tile offers paid upgrade tiers, and plan names and prices are changeable. Check the current app terms to see which alerts, sharing controls or history features require payment. For a simple “where was my bag last detected?” use, compare the total cost with the capabilities you actually need rather than assuming a subscription is necessary.
Luggage setup that avoids common mistakes
- Pair the tag with your phone before packing and give it a descriptive name such as “blue checked suitcase.”
- Place it where the Bluetooth signal is not fully enclosed by a metal case or dense electronics; follow the tag maker’s attachment guidance.
- Record the tag’s identifier and add your contact information through the platform’s lost-item feature.
- For an AirTag, open Find My after handing over the bag and confirm that the item appears in your Items list.
- If an airline supports Share Item Location, create the share from Find My when the bag is reported missing and end it when the case is resolved.
Best trackers for pets
A pet tracker must fit the animal, survive outdoor use and deliver updates where the animal roams. Tractive describes its devices as GPS trackers: satellites determine the location, and cellular networks transmit it to the app. It says service is available in more than 175 countries where partner 2G/LTE coverage exists. “More than 175 countries” is not a guarantee of service in every park, basement or remote trail; verify coverage for your routes.
Tractive model fit and battery estimates
| Model | Manufacturer’s stated fit | Estimated battery life | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| DOG 6 | Dogs from 8.8 lb | Up to two weeks | Estimate varies with tracking frequency, movement and coverage. |
| DOG 6 XL | Dogs from 44.1 lb | Up to six weeks | Larger housing and battery are intended for larger dogs. |
| DOG XL Adventure | Dogs from 55.1 lb | Up to four weeks | Actual runtime depends on use and network conditions. |
| CAT 6 Mini | Small cats; use the maker’s current collar and fit guidance | Up to seven days | Confirm the collar attachment and weight suitability before use. |
These are Tractive’s estimates, not independent measurements. Frequent live tracking, weak cellular coverage and cold weather can reduce runtime. Charge before a trip, enable low-battery notifications and check that the collar attachment is secure without restricting breathing or movement.
Why a pet GPS tracker needs a subscription
The subscription pays the built-in SIM’s network costs. Without service, a GPS device may know where it is but cannot continuously send that position to your phone. Compare the recurring fee, contract length, supported countries and cancellation rules with how often you need live tracking.
AirTag and pets: an important safety boundary
Apple says AirTag is designed for objects, not pets. A pet wearing one may occasionally be located if a nearby Apple device detects it, but that is not a dependable substitute for GPS, cellular reporting, geofences or escape alerts. Choose a purpose-built device whose weight, attachment and charging routine suit the animal.
Recommended Free Tools
Tractive’s product information also says health monitoring is not a diagnosis. Treat activity or wellness indicators as information to discuss with a veterinarian, not as medical advice or an emergency monitoring system.
How to choose between the main options
| Decision axis | Bluetooth item tag | Dedicated GPS/cellular tracker |
|---|---|---|
| Location source | Nearby participating phones detect Bluetooth and report an approximate location. | GPS satellites calculate coordinates; cellular service sends them to an app. |
| Best environments | Busy airports, cities and other places with many compatible phones. | Anywhere with usable satellite reception and supported cellular coverage. |
| Typical alerts | Last detected location and separation or unknown-tracker alerts supported by the platform. | Movement, geofence, route and frequent-location alerts, depending on the model and plan. |
| Power | Small replaceable or rechargeable battery, usually with long intervals between changes. | Rechargeable battery or vehicle power; reporting frequency strongly affects runtime. |
| Recurring cost | Often no cellular subscription; optional platform tiers may apply. | Normally requires a cellular subscription for network service. |
| Physical fit | Designed for belongings; do not assume pet suitability. | Choose a vehicle installation or a pet-sized, weather-resistant attachment. |
| Primary failure mode | No nearby participating phone means a stale or missing update. | No cellular coverage, depleted battery or blocked satellite view delays reporting. |
Setup and testing before you rely on a tracker
- Confirm the purpose. Write down whether you need a last-seen location, a movement notification, a geofence, a route history or an escape alert. Select the technology that can provide that function.
- Check networks at the destination. For an item tag, consider how many compatible phones are likely to be nearby. For GPS products, verify cellular partner coverage and roaming terms for every region involved.
- Install or attach correctly. Secure a car unit against heat, water and vibration; use the intended collar attachment for a pet; keep a luggage tag accessible to Bluetooth signals.
- Configure notifications. Set geofence boundaries, movement thresholds, low-battery warnings and sharing permissions. Avoid an alert schedule you will routinely ignore.
- Run a controlled test. Leave the tagged item with a trusted person, drive a short route or walk the pet within your normal area. Confirm that the map, timestamp and alert arrive as expected.
- Test failure recovery. Power the device off briefly or move it into a known low-signal area so you understand the app’s stale-location wording and reconnection behavior.
- Document ownership. Save the account login, device identifier, subscription details and support contact somewhere accessible to another trusted adult.
Coverage, battery and installation trade-offs
Coverage
Bluetooth network coverage is a function of other people’s phones, not the tag’s advertised range alone. A tag can be physically nearby yet invisible to the network. Cellular GPS coverage varies by carrier, terrain, building construction and roaming agreements. Check the exact neighborhoods, roads, trails and storage locations that matter to you.

Battery planning
Longer battery claims usually assume moderate tracking. Live or frequent updates consume more power than occasional checks. For a vehicle, choose between a charging calendar and hardwired installation. For a pet, size the tracker to the animal and enable low-battery alerts before the device reaches a critical level. For luggage, replace or recharge the tag battery before long travel.
Durability and mounting
An IPX5 or IP67 rating describes tested resistance to water and dust under defined conditions; it does not make every installation waterproof. Keep connectors protected, avoid hot engine compartments unless the device is rated for them and inspect pet attachments for wear.
Privacy, consent and unwanted-tracking protections
Tracking a vehicle or person’s movements can affect safety and privacy. Obtain the owner’s consent and follow the law that applies where the tracking occurs; rules differ by jurisdiction and relationship. Do not hide a tracker on another person’s property or use one to monitor someone without authorization.
Anti-stalking features are designed to alert a person who may be carrying an unknown tag. Apple says supported phones can notify someone when an unknown compatible Bluetooth tracker appears to be moving with them and may cause the tracker to emit a sound. Android 6.0 or later can automatically notify users about an AirTag or another supported unknown tracker. These safeguards are not a promise that every device or circumstance will be detected, so they should supplement—not replace—consent and good judgment.
Troubleshooting stale or missing locations
- Item tag has not updated: move to a busy public area, confirm Bluetooth and network services are enabled on nearby phones, and check the time stamp rather than assuming the pin is live.
- GPS tracker shows no current position: charge it, move it into an open area, verify the subscription and check cellular coverage. It may upload a stored position after reconnecting.
- Geofence alert arrived late: review the device’s reporting interval, app notification permissions and the boundary size. A geofence cannot alert until the tracker reports a position.
- Pet unit is uncomfortable: stop using it and inspect the collar and attachment. Recheck the maker’s weight and fit requirements instead of improvising a heavier unit on a small animal.
- Car battery concerns: for hardwired units, have the installation checked for the correct connection and parasitic drain; for portable units, use the low-battery warning and a regular charging schedule.
Frequently asked questions
Can a Bluetooth tag replace a GPS tracker for theft recovery?
No. It can provide a valuable last-detected location, but it depends on nearby participating phones and does not offer the dedicated cellular reporting and vehicle controls of a GPS tracker.
Will a GPS pet tracker work in every country?
Not automatically. Tractive lists service in more than 175 countries where partner 2G/LTE coverage is available. Confirm coverage and roaming terms for the specific destination before travel.
Do hardwired car trackers need charging?
A hardwired unit draws power from the vehicle battery, so it avoids routine device charging. It still needs correct installation, and the vehicle battery and cellular subscription remain dependencies.
