Best overall for extreme zoom: the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. Its separate 10MP 3x telephoto and 50MP 5x periscope cover more useful focal lengths than a phone with one long lens. Choose the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL if you prefer computational enhancement, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra for enthusiast still photography where it is sold, or the iPhone 16 Pro Max when video and Apple-device integration matter more than maximum reach.
What counts as “extreme zoom” on a phone?
Extreme zoom is any framing well beyond a phone’s main camera, where the subject is too far away to fill the frame without a telephoto lens and additional processing. The useful distinction is not the largest number printed in a camera app; it is how much detail the phone can preserve at the distance you actually shoot.
Optical zoom
Optical zoom uses a dedicated telephoto camera and lens. The lens forms a magnified image before the phone records it, so detail is captured rather than merely enlarged. Periscope and tetraprism designs fold the light path inside the phone, allowing a longer equivalent focal length without making the handset as thick as a conventional camera with a long lens.

Digital zoom crops the image. Computational systems add multi-frame capture, sharpening, denoising and other processing to make that crop look clearer. A phone can therefore advertise 30x or a higher AI-assisted step even though its longest native camera is 5x. The multiplier describes the framing mode, not the amount of optical detail available at every distance.

1. Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra: the best all-round extreme-zoom choice
The Galaxy S25 Ultra is the easiest recommendation when you photograph subjects at several distances. Its 10MP 3x telephoto handles nearer detail, portraits from a distance and many travel scenes, while the 50MP 5x periscope reaches farther without immediately relying on a crop. Having both focal lengths gives you more useful intermediate options than a phone with one 5x module.
Why the two-telephoto layout matters
A single 5x camera is excellent when the subject naturally fits that angle, but it leaves a larger jump from the main camera to 5x. With the S25 Ultra, you can use 3x when 5x would crop too tightly, then move to the periscope when the subject is genuinely distant. That flexibility is valuable for wildlife that changes position, sports played across a field and landmarks photographed from changing viewpoints.
Where it performs best
- Wildlife: switch between 3x and 5x as an animal approaches or recedes, then use a higher software-assisted step only when you cannot move closer.
- Sports: the two native telephotos help maintain framing as play moves around the venue.
- Travel: distant architecture and details on hillsides are easier to compose without committing to one very narrow angle.
- Moon photography: the 5x periscope gives you a stronger starting point than the main camera; additional processing can enlarge the lunar disk, but atmospheric conditions still determine how much real surface detail survives.
Limitations to understand
Samsung’s higher AI-assisted zoom steps extend beyond the native lenses, so results can change with illumination, subject movement and firmware processing. A sharp-looking preview at a moderate distance does not mean the highest setting will resolve fine fur, feathers or building edges. Verify the current regional camera specification before buying because published configurations and software features can vary by market.
2. Google Pixel 9 Pro XL: the computational-zoom alternative
The Pixel 9 Pro XL combines a 48MP 5x periscope with Super Res Zoom up to 30x. Its appeal is speed: point at a distant subject, choose the desired magnification and let multi-frame computational processing attempt to recover detail beyond the native lens.

What “30x” means here
30x is a Super Res Zoom mode built around a 5x periscope, not a 30x optical lens. At that setting the phone is enlarging and processing a crop. It can be useful for identifying or recording a far-away subject when you cannot change position, but the result should not be judged as equivalent to a dedicated 30x optical camera.

Best subjects for the Pixel approach
- Static landmarks, signs and other subjects that give the phone several frames to combine.
- Quick snapshots where you value an acceptable distant image more than manual control.
- Scenes in which the phone’s processing can clean up a crop without the subject changing position between frames.
The trade-off is focal-length coverage. The Pixel has one native telephoto focal length, so the framing between the main camera and 5x is handled with cropping or a digital transition rather than a second optical module. If you regularly shoot at several distances, that gap is more consequential than the 30x headline.
3. Xiaomi 15 Ultra: a specialist still-photography option
The Xiaomi 15 Ultra is aimed at photographers who prioritize specialist camera hardware and still-image detail. Comparison coverage reports a 4.3x telephoto and capability up to 30x. In good light, that combination can be attractive for deliberate photographs where you can steady the phone and take time over composition.
Why it is not a universal recommendation
Availability and software support vary by market. Before ordering, confirm that the exact model is officially sold in your country, that local network bands and warranty service are covered, and that the camera features you expect are present in that region’s software. Do not assume that the 30x figure represents optical reach, or that the phone’s high megapixel count guarantees more detail than a competitor with a lower-resolution telephoto.
Who should choose it
It makes the most sense for an enthusiast who is comfortable checking regional availability and who values still photography in favorable light over the broadest plug-and-play support. If you need a phone that is easy to recommend across markets, the Galaxy and Pixel options are simpler choices.
4. iPhone 16 Pro Max: choose it for video and ecosystem, not maximum reach
The iPhone 16 Pro Max has a 12MP 5x tetraprism optical telephoto. That folded-light design provides genuine 5x optical reach in a relatively slim phone and remains useful for distant subjects, stage events and travel details.

Its strongest case
Choose the iPhone when your priority is a video workflow, Apple-device integration or a consistent experience across the cameras you already use. A 5x optical camera is much more dependable for moving subjects than relying solely on a heavily enlarged crop, and the phone remains a capable long-range camera when video matters as much as stills.
Why it ranks below Samsung for extreme zoom
Comparative coverage says the iPhone cannot match the Galaxy S25 Ultra’s combined optical and software-enhanced zoom range. The difference is primarily about reach and intermediate coverage: Samsung provides separate 3x and 5x telephotos, while the iPhone’s long camera is a single 5x module. If maximum distance detail is your deciding criterion, the iPhone is not the first pick.
How to choose between the four
Pick the Galaxy S25 Ultra when distance changes constantly
Choose Samsung if you photograph wildlife, sports, travel scenes or events where the subject may be near one moment and far away the next. The 3x-plus-5x arrangement gives you two native tools before computational zoom enters the equation.

Pick the Pixel 9 Pro XL when you want computational help
Choose Google if you prefer a straightforward camera experience and often need to enlarge a distant subject after the native 5x view is no longer enough. Treat 30x as an enhanced crop, not as an optical specification.
Pick the Xiaomi 15 Ultra when you are an enthusiast in a supported market
Choose Xiaomi if its regional availability, warranty and software support are confirmed and your priority is still photography in good light. Its 4.3x telephoto and reported 30x capability are compelling only when those practical conditions are satisfied.
Pick the iPhone 16 Pro Max when video comes first
Choose Apple if your footage, editing workflow and other devices are already centered on the Apple ecosystem. Its 5x tetraprism is a real optical advantage, even though it does not provide the longest overall zoom range in this group.

Is 100x zoom actually useful?
It can be useful as a framing or identification aid, but it should not be treated as a 100x optical lens. At extreme settings the phone is working far beyond its native telephoto, so the image is dominated by cropping, multi-frame processing and sharpening. Fine detail is especially vulnerable to subject movement, hand shake, low light and atmospheric haze.
Good uses for an extreme software step
- Checking what is happening on a distant stage, trail or playing field.
- Reading a large, high-contrast sign when moving closer is impossible.
- Framing the moon or another bright, high-contrast object for a record shot.
- Creating a visually recognizable image where documentary detail is not essential.
When to stop increasing magnification
Stop when edges become smeared, repeated textures turn into artificial patterns or the subject moves between the frames used for processing. A stable 5x or 10x image with recognizable detail is more useful than a larger but unstable crop. The exact point varies with light, distance and the phone’s processing, so evaluate the saved file rather than the live preview alone.
Practical technique for wildlife, sports and travel
1. Start with the native telephoto
Use the 3x or 5x camera on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, the 5x camera on the Pixel 9 Pro XL or iPhone 16 Pro Max, or the 4.3x camera on the Xiaomi 15 Ultra. Native telephoto capture gives the phone real optical information before any additional crop.
2. Stabilize before increasing reach
Brace the phone against a solid surface or use a tripod where practical. Stabilization matters more as magnification rises because a small hand movement covers a larger portion of the distant subject. Optical reach cannot compensate for a moving phone.
3. Watch the subject and the air between you
Animals, athletes and people can move during a multi-frame computational exposure. Heat shimmer, mist, dust and long-distance atmospheric haze can also erase fine detail before processing begins. Move closer or reduce magnification when the air is visibly unstable.
4. Compare the saved image at full size
Do not choose a phone from the zoom number alone. Photograph the same distant subject with each candidate at its native telephoto and at the software steps you would actually use. Inspect fur, foliage, text and hard edges in the saved files. The test should include bright daylight and a lower-light scene because processing behavior can change substantially.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Testing a phone before you buy
- Confirm the hardware: check whether the model has one telephoto or separate 3x and 5x modules, and verify the regional specification.
- Record native views: capture the same subject at the phone’s main camera, native telephoto and any second telephoto.
- Try the advertised software reach: test Super Res Zoom or the manufacturer’s AI-assisted steps, but label those files as computational crops rather than optical samples.
- Repeat with movement: photograph a person walking or an animal changing position to see whether processing leaves artifacts.
- Repeat in difficult air: include a distant scene with haze or heat shimmer; this reveals limits that a clear indoor chart will not.
- Review the originals: compare saved files at 100% magnification, not only thumbnails on the phone screen.
- Check ownership practicalities: confirm local availability, warranty, software support and the exact storage and regional camera configuration before paying.
What the published camera scores do—and do not—tell you
PhoneArena’s camera table lists a Galaxy S25 Ultra score of 158 dated February 7, 2025; a Pixel 11 Pro XL score of 156 dated August 20, 2026; and a vivo X200 Ultra score of 153 dated April 29, 2025. These are dated aggregate scores, not a dedicated extreme-zoom ranking, and the Pixel 11 Pro XL and vivo model are not part of the four-phone comparison above. They should not override the specific telephoto hardware, software behavior and regional support that determine whether a phone suits your subjects.
Common buying mistakes
Confusing megapixels with reach
A 50MP or 200MP camera can produce a detailed crop, but resolution alone does not create a longer lens. The Galaxy S25 Ultra’s 50MP 5x periscope is useful because it is paired with a telephoto optical path, not simply because the number is large.
Treating a software multiplier as an optical specification
Pixel’s 30x Super Res Zoom starts with a 5x periscope. The same principle applies to higher AI-assisted modes: they extend framing through computation and cropping.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIgnoring light and movement
Extreme zoom is least reliable when the scene is dark, the subject moves or the air is hazy. A phone that looks excellent in a bright, static demonstration may produce a very different file at a dusk sporting event or across a hot road.
Assuming worldwide availability
The Xiaomi 15 Ultra’s availability and software support vary by market. Check the official local model before treating it as a practical recommendation. Samsung, Google and Apple specifications should also be verified for your region.
Bottom line
For the widest practical native zoom range, buy the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra: its 3x and 5x telephotos cover mixed-distance subjects better than a single long lens. Buy the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL for computationally enhanced 30x framing, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra for enthusiast still photography where officially supported, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max when video and Apple workflow outweigh maximum zoom reach. Whatever you choose, judge the saved photographs in the light and conditions you actually expect to shoot; no headline multiplier replaces a stable phone, a clear atmosphere and a subject that holds still.
