Short answer: choose Snowflake Cortex when your text already sits in Snowflake and you want governed, SQL-native inference; choose Databricks AI Functions or ai_query for lakehouse, Spark, streaming, and large batch pipelines; choose Amazon Redshift ML with Bedrock for an AWS-centered warehouse; and choose Microsoft Fabric AI Functions when pandas, PySpark, T-SQL, Azure OpenAI administration, and Power BI are part of one Microsoft platform.

BigQuery remains a strong baseline. Google Cloud documents functions for generation, analysis, summarization, structured extraction, classification, embeddings, filtering, scoring, aggregation, token counting, and task-specific language, document, audio, and vision workloads. Its generative-AI overview says optimized mode (Preview) scales to “millions or billions of rows”; that is a capability statement, not an independent throughput benchmark. The alternatives below are therefore compared by execution model, integration, controls, and operating fit—not by an invented universal speed or price ranking.

Comparison at a glance

Platform Primary execution surface Documented strengths Large-batch guidance Best fit
Snowflake Cortex AI Functions Snowflake SQL warehouse Unstructured text and image analytics; model choices from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Mistral, DeepSeek, and others; warehouse governance Snowflake recommends batch processing for numerous inputs such as text in large SQL tables Data already governed in Snowflake and teams that want SQL-centric inference
Databricks AI Functions and ai_query Databricks SQL, Python, Spark, Lakeflow pipelines, workflows, and Structured Streaming Task-specific parsing, extraction, classification, sentiment, plus general-purpose model calls; automatic parallelization, retries, and scaling Submit the full dataset in one query instead of manually splitting it into small batches Lakehouse and Spark estates with batch, streaming, or complex data preparation
Amazon Redshift ML with Bedrock Redshift SQL, with Bedrock model invocation Text generation, sentiment analysis, translation, and SQL-based model training and prediction through Redshift ML Official guidance describes the integration and use cases, but does not publish a neutral throughput benchmark AWS-native warehouses that want inference and governance close to Redshift data
Microsoft Fabric AI Functions One-line transformations on pandas or PySpark DataFrames; T-SQL in Fabric Warehouse, Lakehouse SQL endpoints, and mirrored databases Enrichment, classification, summarization, document-field extraction, PDF summarization, and grounded responses Official material emphasizes DataFrame and T-SQL integration rather than a cross-platform scale number Microsoft-centric analytics teams using Fabric, Azure OpenAI administration, and Power BI

“Best” depends on where the source data lives and how the pipeline runs. Moving a warehouse’s data to another platform just to call an LLM can add transfer, security, lineage, and operational work that outweighs a feature difference.

What BigQuery AI functions cover

BigQuery’s AI-function family is broad enough to serve as a reference checklist when evaluating a replacement. Google Cloud documents generative text, analysis, summarization, structured extraction, classification, embeddings, filtering, scoring, aggregation, and token counting. Separate task-oriented capabilities address language, documents, audio, and vision. This means a replacement must be assessed by workload, not by whether it has one similarly named function.

Generation and analysis

For free-form generation or analysis, the key question is how prompts, model selection, errors, and output schemas are handled in the target platform. A SQL-only team may value a function that can be composed with joins and filters. A data-engineering team may prefer Python or Spark APIs that can add validation, branching, and custom retry logic around each record or partition.

Extraction and classification

Structured extraction and classification are often better served by task-specific functions than by unconstrained text generation. Compare whether the service can return predictable fields, how null or malformed responses are represented, and whether the transformation can be retried without duplicating downstream records. The official descriptions for Databricks and Fabric explicitly include extraction and classification; Snowflake describes unstructured analytics; Redshift documentation highlights sentiment and related text tasks.

Embeddings, scoring, and aggregation

Embedding and scoring workloads have different storage and query requirements from summarization. Confirm where vectors or scores are written, how they are versioned, and whether the warehouse or lakehouse can combine them with existing analytical queries. Token counting and aggregation also affect cost controls: a pipeline that measures input size before inference can route unusually large documents or reject them before they consume model capacity.

Scale wording versus benchmark evidence

Google Cloud’s current generative-AI overview says optimized mode (Preview) scales to “millions or billions of rows.” That wording describes intended capability. It does not establish latency, cost per row, error rate, or throughput against Snowflake, Databricks, Redshift, or Fabric. Treat every vendor’s scale language the same way and run a representative benchmark before committing to a service-level objective.

Snowflake Cortex: the SQL-native alternative

Snowflake Cortex AI Functions are designed for unstructured analytics on text and images inside Snowflake. Snowflake lists models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, Mistral, DeepSeek, and other providers. The practical advantage is a short path from governed tables to inference: analysts and data engineers can keep transformations in SQL, use existing warehouse permissions, and write results alongside the source data.

When Cortex is the right choice

  • Your source data is already in Snowflake. Keeping inference in the warehouse avoids a separate extraction and loading stage.
  • The team is SQL-first. Cortex can be evaluated as another SQL transformation rather than as a separate application service.
  • Model choice matters. The documented provider range can support experiments with different model families while retaining one data platform.
  • Governance is centralized in Snowflake. Existing roles, warehouses, and data-access practices can remain the control plane.

How to run large text tables

Snowflake’s guidance is explicit: “We recommend using batch processing for AI Functions when processing numerous inputs such as text from large SQL tables.” Design the job as a bounded batch transformation, persist an immutable input identifier, and write model output with status and error fields. That lets you resume failed work without reprocessing successful rows. Keep prompt templates and model settings under version control outside ad-hoc worksheet history so a rerun can be explained later.

Trade-offs to test

Cortex’s official material does not provide a neutral comparison of latency, price, or maximum rows against the other platforms. Measure warehouse consumption, model charges, concurrency behavior, response length, and the percentage of rows requiring retries. Image support is documented, but the exact formats, limits, and model availability can vary by account and region; verify those details in the Snowflake documentation for your deployment before designing a multimodal pipeline.

Databricks AI Functions and ai_query: lakehouse and Spark pipelines

Databricks offers task-specific AI Functions for document parsing, extraction, classification, and sentiment analysis, plus the general-purpose ai_query function from SQL or Python. The platform documentation says these functions can be integrated into production workflows such as Lakeflow pipelines, Databricks workflows, and Structured Streaming for large-scale batch inference.

Why Databricks fits lakehouse workloads

  • Data preparation is distributed. Spark transformations, joins, and partitioned files can remain in the same processing environment as inference.
  • You need batch and streaming paths. The documented Structured Streaming integration allows the same conceptual transformation to be placed in a continuously arriving pipeline, subject to the model endpoint’s capacity and your latency target.
  • You need both fixed tasks and custom prompts. Task-specific functions cover common operations, while ai_query handles general-purpose requests.
  • Operational behavior matters. Databricks documents automatic parallelization, retries, and scaling for these patterns.

Batching guidance

Databricks advises submitting the full dataset in one query rather than manually dividing it into many small batches. That lets the service manage parallelization and retries. “Full dataset” does not mean an unbounded, untracked job: include a stable key, select only required columns, constrain the input with a reproducible predicate, and capture status and output metadata. If a run fails, rerun the same logical slice instead of creating overlapping hand-made batches.

Choosing task-specific functions versus ai_query

Use a task-specific function when the operation and output shape match its documented purpose, such as parsing a document or classifying sentiment. Use ai_query when you need a custom instruction, a particular serving endpoint, or a workflow that combines model output with application logic. Keep a schema-validation step after either path; a successful model response is not proof that every field is usable.

Trade-offs to test

Databricks is a natural fit when the lakehouse is already the system of record, but a warehouse-only team may incur unnecessary Spark and pipeline complexity. Benchmark end-to-end cost, including cluster or SQL-compute time, endpoint or model charges, storage, and retries. Official guidance describes operational mechanisms, not a universal throughput or price advantage.

Amazon Redshift ML with Bedrock: AWS-native SQL inference

AWS documents invoking Amazon Bedrock models from Redshift SQL for text generation, sentiment analysis, and translation. Redshift ML separately supports training models with SQL statements and invoking those models in SQL queries for prediction. Together, they cover two different needs: calling foundation models for language tasks and operating trained predictive models close to warehouse data.

When this path is most natural

  • Redshift is the governed data store. SQL inference can use existing schemas, permissions, and workload-management practices.
  • Your organization standardizes on AWS. Bedrock model access, identity, logging, and network controls can align with the rest of the estate.
  • You need both LLM and traditional ML. Bedrock handles documented language tasks, while Redshift ML covers SQL-driven training and prediction.

Designing a Redshift workflow

  1. Define an input table with a stable business key, the text to process, and a processing status.
  2. Choose whether the task is a Bedrock language operation—such as generation, sentiment, or translation—or a Redshift ML prediction from a trained model.
  3. Run inference in a controlled SQL statement or scheduled job, writing outputs and failure details to a separate result table.
  4. Validate response shape, language, and null handling before joining results back to reporting tables.
  5. Measure model invocation charges, Redshift compute, queue time, retries, and the cost of reprocessing failed rows.

The AWS material establishes supported integration patterns, not a cross-cloud ranking. Confirm model availability, quotas, regional data handling, and account-specific pricing before promising a throughput or residency target.

Microsoft Fabric AI Functions: DataFrame and T-SQL workflows

Microsoft Fabric AI Functions apply one-line LLM-powered transformations to large pandas or PySpark DataFrames. They also expose T-SQL use in Fabric Warehouse, Lakehouse SQL endpoints, and mirrored databases. Documented scenarios include enrichment, classification, summarization, document-field extraction, PDF summarization, and grounded responses.

Why Fabric can reduce platform switching

A team may move between notebooks, Spark jobs, SQL warehouses, and Power BI preparation during one project. Fabric’s common AI-function layer can keep the transformation concept consistent across those surfaces. This is especially attractive when Azure OpenAI administration, Microsoft identity, and Power BI integration already determine the platform boundary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DataFrame pattern

  1. Load only the columns needed for the transformation into a pandas or PySpark DataFrame.
  2. Choose the documented function matching the task—such as classification, summarization, or field extraction.
  3. Preserve the original key and write the generated fields beside it rather than replacing source text.
  4. Validate schema, empty responses, and document-size exceptions before publishing to a Warehouse, Lakehouse, or semantic model.
  5. Record the function configuration and run identifier so a Power BI refresh can be traced to the producing batch.

T-SQL pattern

Use T-SQL when downstream consumers already expect relational tables or when mirrored databases and Lakehouse SQL endpoints are the integration surface. Keep AI output in a staging table until quality checks pass. The documentation does not state a neutral maximum row count or performance figure, so size the job with a pilot that reflects your document mix and refresh window.

Trade-offs to test

Fabric is strongest for Microsoft-centered estates, but a team standardized on another cloud may be adding a new governance and identity domain. Include Azure OpenAI administration, Fabric capacity, DataFrame or SQL compute, model usage, and Power BI refresh effects in the total-cost test.

How to choose among the four

1. Start with data location

If the authoritative table is in Snowflake, Cortex usually minimizes movement. If files and Delta tables are in a lakehouse, Databricks keeps Spark preparation and inference together. If Redshift is the AWS warehouse of record, Redshift plus Bedrock avoids a separate extraction path. If Fabric already hosts notebooks, warehouses, mirrored data, and Power BI models, Fabric AI Functions reduce handoffs.

2. Match the execution surface to the team

Team workflow Most aligned option Reason
SQL analysts transforming warehouse tables Snowflake Cortex or Redshift with Bedrock Inference remains composable with warehouse SQL and governance
Spark, lakehouse, and streaming engineers Databricks AI Functions and ai_query Documented integration with Lakeflow, workflows, and Structured Streaming
Pandas and PySpark notebooks plus Power BI Fabric AI Functions One-line DataFrame transformations and T-SQL surfaces in Fabric
Mixed SQL and Python with custom endpoint logic Databricks ai_query General-purpose function available from SQL and Python

3. Decide how much model control you need

Snowflake documents a broad provider set, while Databricks exposes task-specific functions and a general-purpose query function. Redshift delegates foundation-model invocation to Bedrock and combines it with Redshift ML for trained models. Fabric’s fit depends heavily on the organization’s Azure OpenAI and Microsoft administration model. Ask whether you need a fixed approved model, provider choice per workload, custom serving endpoints, or only a controlled task function.

4. Separate batch throughput from interactive latency

Millions of records are a batch problem, not an interactive-query problem. Use queues or scheduled jobs, idempotent keys, bounded output sizes, and retryable states. For user-facing requests, measure tail latency separately; a platform that is efficient for a nightly table may not meet an interactive response objective.

5. Evaluate governance and residency

Document which identities can read source text, where prompts and responses are logged, which region processes data, how long outputs are retained, and how model changes are approved. Existing warehouse or Fabric controls may simplify this, but do not assume that an AI function inherits every downstream control automatically. Verify account, region, and model-specific behavior.

A practical migration plan from BigQuery AI functions

  1. Inventory each function call. Classify it as generation, summarization, extraction, classification, embedding, scoring, aggregation, token counting, or a document, audio, or vision task.
  2. Record the contract. Capture input columns, prompt template, expected output schema, language, maximum document size, acceptable error rate, and refresh deadline.
  3. Map to the closest execution surface. Use Snowflake Cortex for Snowflake SQL, Databricks task-specific functions or ai_query for Spark and Python, Redshift Bedrock for AWS SQL, and Fabric AI Functions for DataFrame or Fabric T-SQL workflows.
  4. Build a shadow run. Process a representative sample containing short, long, multilingual, empty, malformed, and duplicate inputs. Keep BigQuery results as the comparison baseline.
  5. Compare quality before speed. Check field-level accuracy, classification agreement, summary completeness, refusal behavior, and embedding dimensions or downstream retrieval quality where applicable.
  6. Measure operations. Record end-to-end duration, model and compute charges, retry count, failed rows, concurrency, and storage growth. Do not extrapolate from a tiny clean sample.
  7. Cut over by partition or date. Write outputs with a versioned model and prompt identifier, then retain the ability to replay a partition if quality or policy changes.

Scaling millions of text rows safely

Use stable, idempotent inputs

Every row should have a durable identifier and a content hash or version. Store the function name, model or endpoint, prompt version, timestamp, status, and error category with the result. This prevents duplicate charges when a job is retried and makes a single-row correction possible.

Let the platform parallelize where documented

Snowflake recommends batch processing for numerous inputs. Databricks recommends submitting the full dataset in one query so its service can manage parallelization, retries, and scaling. Do not create thousands of tiny hand-managed batches unless a platform limit or isolation requirement makes that necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control input and output size

Token counting, truncation policy, and document routing are operational controls, not cosmetic optimizations. Reject or quarantine oversized documents, route PDFs to a document-capable function, and keep generated fields bounded when downstream tables have fixed schemas.

Plan for partial failure

Expect malformed documents, rate limits, transient endpoint errors, and responses that fail schema validation. Write failures as data with a retryable or permanent classification. Retry only the failed set, with a cap and backoff policy appropriate to the platform. A successful SQL statement or DataFrame transformation does not guarantee that every individual model response is valid.

Protect sensitive text

Minimize columns sent to the model, apply row-level access before inference, and document regional processing. Keep raw prompts and responses subject to the same retention and access policy as the source records unless a stricter policy applies.

Cost and performance: what the official material does—and does not—prove

The available official documentation provides feature descriptions and operational advice, not an independent cross-platform benchmark. No neutral source establishes a universal winner for throughput, latency, price per row, or total cost. The Google Cloud “millions or billions of rows” wording is a capability statement for optimized mode (Preview), not a measured comparison.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a cost model that includes:

  • Model or provider usage, including input and output tokens where applicable.
  • Warehouse, SQL, Spark, DataFrame, or Fabric capacity consumed while preparing and writing data.
  • Retries, failed responses, duplicate processing, and validation passes.
  • Storage for raw text, prompts, responses, embeddings, status records, and audit logs.
  • Data-transfer and egress charges if inference is moved away from the system of record.
  • Engineering and operations time for monitoring, schema changes, and model updates.

Run the same corpus and acceptance tests on each finalist. Report median and tail latency, completed rows per hour, failure rate, quality scores, and fully loaded cost. Keep region, model, prompt, concurrency, and document mix constant; otherwise the comparison measures different workloads.

Recommendations by scenario

  • Snowflake-centered SQL warehouse: start with Snowflake Cortex AI Functions and its documented batch pattern.
  • Lakehouse, Spark, or Structured Streaming: start with Databricks task-specific AI Functions, adding ai_query where custom prompts or endpoints are required.
  • AWS Redshift estate: evaluate Redshift SQL invoking Bedrock for generation, sentiment, and translation, alongside Redshift ML for trained-model prediction.
  • Microsoft analytics estate: evaluate Fabric AI Functions when pandas, PySpark, Fabric SQL surfaces, Azure OpenAI administration, and Power BI are already connected.
  • Uncertain or multi-platform environment: keep BigQuery as a baseline and run a controlled pilot on the platform that minimizes data movement and governance duplication.

The deciding evidence should come from your data location, execution model, security requirements, quality tests, and fully loaded workload economics—not from a generic claim that one service is fastest or cheapest.
