If you want a first RPG with a gentle learning curve, start with Pokémon Red or Pokémon Blue: their capture-and-train loop is introduced early, and the journey is organized around clear milestones. Choose Chrono Trigger instead if you would rather play a compact, story-led adventure. Neither is effortless, and there is no controlled comparison proving one is objectively easier; these picks are beginner-friendly because they make their basic rhythms relatively approachable.
At a glance: which game fits you?
| Game | Best fit | Why it can work for a newcomer | Friction to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Red/Blue | Players who enjoy collecting creatures and building a team | The game teaches catching early and gives the adventure clear Kanto, Gym, and Elite Four milestones. RPGFan describes its dungeons as growing more complex over time. | Type matchups and team choices matter; Hidden Moves can gate navigation; trading is needed to collect every Pokémon; some late-game areas are harder. |
| Chrono Trigger | Players who want a compact, story-led quest | A 2021 newcomer-focused essay describes its combat as straightforward and estimates a first playthrough at 15–20 hours. | It still involves combat and formidable stakes. The playtime is one writer’s estimate, not a guaranteed finish time. |
The order is a practical recommendation, not a measured difficulty ranking: Pokémon is the clearer first RPG for someone who likes collecting and gradual team-building, while Chrono Trigger suits someone who values pacing and a shorter reported campaign.
Pokémon Red and Blue: the clearest first-RPG loop
Nintendo’s official legacy page for Pokémon Red describes Professor Oak teaching the player how to catch Pokémon before sending them into the Kanto region. From there, exploration, collecting, training, Gym challenges, and the Elite Four provide a readable progression path. Red and Blue are separate versions, and Nintendo notes that completing the full collection requires trading with another player.

Why the learning curve works
The appeal is not that the game removes decisions; it introduces a manageable core loop and expands it. RPGFan’s feature calls the games “master classes in how to introduce the RPG genre to first-time players,” pointing to simple dungeons that gradually grow more complex. That steady escalation can help a newcomer learn exploration and battles before facing more involved areas.
#1 Best Overall
Team planning adds depth without requiring a player to master every system immediately. A 2009 Nintendo Life review by Stuart Reddick explains the type strengths and weaknesses and the need to assemble a six-Pokémon team with complementary abilities. Reddick estimated a 30–40-hour adventure; treat that as a review-era estimate, not an official or universal completion time.
What may frustrate you
- Matchups matter. Choosing a useful mix of Pokémon makes battles more manageable than relying on a single favorite.
- Some exploration is gated. Hidden Moves such as Cut, Surf, Strength, and Flash can be required to move through certain areas, so your party’s available moves affect navigation.
- The difficulty rises. RPGFan identifies the late-game Cerulean Cave and its Mewtwo encounter as a more demanding exploration and combat challenge.
- Completion has a social requirement. A single version does not contain every Pokémon; trading is needed to complete the Pokédex.
For release context, Nintendo Life’s Game Boy RPG guide lists the North American Red/Blue release date as September 30, 1998, and describes their gameplay as simpler by modern standards while retaining deeper team-building for players who want it.

Chrono Trigger: a compact story-led alternative
If collecting and managing a roster sounds more like work than fun, Chrono Trigger offers a different entry point: a focused adventure with combat that a 2021 newcomer recommendation essay by Derek L.H. describes as generally straightforward and intuitive. Characters gain experience, learn Tech abilities, and can combine abilities with party members. Enemies are visible on the field, giving players more control over when to approach fights than a system built around surprise random encounters.
Derek L.H. estimated a first playthrough at 15–20 hours. That is one writer’s editorial estimate, not a measured average or promise; exploration, battle pace, and how much optional content you pursue can change the time. The essay’s platform list—SNES, PlayStation, Nintendo DS, Android, iOS, and PC via Steam—reflects its 2021 publication date, so check a current store in your region before planning a purchase.

- 🎮5.1-inch color screen game console🎮. It has a very rich range of functions, not only for playing games, but also for watching videos, listening to music, and reading e-books. Very suitable for outdoor/indoor/travel leisure and entertainment, and also very suitable as a gift.
- 🎮Supports multiple emulators🎮. Equipped with various retro emulators such as MAME/arcade/MD, players have more choices. Each emulator has many games, and one game console is equivalent to ten game consoles from the past. It is now very cost-effective to purchase.
- 🎮Built in thousands of free games🎮. Built in over 4000 classic nostalgic games (ACT/AVG/RPG/FTG/PUZ/RAC/SLG/SPG/STG) built-in, games can be added or deleted, making it convenient for users to organize game files(portable game console).
- 🎮The game can be saved🎮. When the battery is low or the user cannot continue playing the game, pressing the "ESC" button can save the game progress, and the player can continue playing according to the previous progress without starting over.
- 🎮Support video and audio playback🎮. When users don't want to play games, they can also watch videos, listen to music, and read e-books. It is a great multifunctional portable electronic entertainment device (pocket game console).
Why it may suit a reluctant RPG player
- The central adventure is more compact by the cited estimate than a long-form RPG commitment.
- Visible enemies let you see many encounters before engaging, which can reduce the feeling of being interrupted unexpectedly.
- Its combat has recognizable RPG systems, but the cited essay presents the core flow as approachable rather than opaque.
What to keep in mind
Approachable combat does not mean no challenge: the story deals with formidable stakes, and battles still ask you to use your party and abilities. Choose it for pacing and a shorter reported first run, not on the assumption that every fight will be easy.
How to choose between them
- Pick Pokémon Red/Blue if collecting, raising a team, and pursuing clear Gym milestones sound motivating. It is the stronger recommendation for a first RPG when learning the genre’s basic loop matters most.
- Pick Chrono Trigger if you prefer a guided story, visible enemies, and a comparatively compact reported campaign over roster collecting.
These are two different routes into 1990s role-playing games, not evidence that the decade’s RPGs as a whole are gentle. Older interfaces and individual game mechanics vary, and these sources do not provide a head-to-head difficulty test.

Know which Pokémon release you are looking for
Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue are the original Game Boy games. Do not confuse them with Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen, which are 2004 remakes of the original adventures. Nintendo’s 2026 Switch announcement says the Switch editions of FireRed and LeafGreen are digital-only; Nintendo’s support information says it has nothing to announce about adding original Red/Blue to Nintendo Classics. Availability can vary by region and change over time, so verify a legitimate current option before buying. If you are considering a used original cartridge, check authenticity, region, condition, return terms, and whether you have compatible hardware.
