The most effective OnePlus N6 battery plan is progressive: identify the apps using power, reduce display demand, automate ordinary Power saving mode, and reserve Super power saving mode for an emergency. The N6 has an 8,000 mAh typical battery (7,780 mAh rated), but runtime still depends on signal strength, refresh rate, brightness, apps, calls, recharges, battery age and temperature. Start with the least disruptive changes so notifications, navigation and connected accessories continue working.
What the OnePlus N6 battery settings can—and cannot—do
OnePlus launched the N6 on June 30, 2026, with an 8,000 mAh typical battery, a 7,780 mAh rated capacity and 45W SuperVOOC charging. Those are hardware and charging specifications, not a guaranteed number of hours. OnePlus states that experienced battery life varies with network environment, features and applications, call and message frequency, number of recharges, usage habits, device age and other settings.
The phone supports a display refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. A higher refresh rate can make scrolling and supported games look smoother, while the display, modem and processor generally have more work to do. The actual rate can also vary by app interface and game settings, so selecting 120 Hz does not mean every app constantly runs at 120 Hz.

The best order for changing settings
Change settings in this order. It catches an abnormal drain before you make the whole phone less convenient.
- Inspect Battery usage since the last full charge.
- Restrict or optimize only persistent high-use apps.
- Set ordinary Power saving mode to switch on automatically at a chosen percentage.
- Reduce brightness, screen timeout and refresh rate when you need more runtime.
- Disable radios and location services that are genuinely idle.
- Reduce heavy screen-on activities during a low-battery period.
- Enable Optimised charging and control heat for long-term battery health.
This sequence separates an app problem from normal display or connectivity consumption. It also avoids turning on the most restrictive mode when a single misbehaving app is responsible.
1. Find the drain in Battery usage
Check the list before changing system-wide options
Open Settings > Battery, then open the battery-usage view. OxygenOS presents consumption since the last full charge or the selected period. Look for an app that is unusually high relative to how much you used it, especially if it has substantial background activity.
Tap a suspected app and look for controls such as App battery management, Optimize battery use or a background-activity restriction. The exact wording can change with OxygenOS 16 updates and region. OnePlus documents these controls, and Android’s guidance also recommends restricting apps that repeatedly use a disproportionate amount of battery.
Choose the least disruptive app control
- Optimize battery use: the normal first choice when you want Android to manage background work.
- Restrict background activity: useful for an app that keeps running after you leave it, but it can delay sync, uploads, widgets or notifications.
- Leave unrestricted: appropriate for time-critical messaging, wearable companions, navigation or work apps where delayed updates are worse than the battery cost.
After changing one or two apps, use the phone normally for a charge cycle and check Battery usage again. Restricting every app at once makes it difficult to identify the cause and can create missed alerts that look like a different problem.
When an app is not the real culprit
A high percentage can reflect intensive foreground use rather than a fault. A video editor, camera, game or navigation app may legitimately top the list after long screen-on sessions. Investigate more closely when the app is high despite little visible use, keeps the phone warm while idle, or shows extensive background time.
2. Configure ordinary Power saving mode
What it is for
Power saving mode is the routine conservation setting. OnePlus battery controls document a manual switch, automatic activation at a selected battery level, default optimization and an option to turn the mode off when the phone is fully charged. On the N6, labels and placement can differ from the OnePlus Open manual on which some of that documentation is based, so use the current labels displayed under Settings > Battery.

Set an automatic threshold
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Open Power saving mode or the similarly named battery-saving panel.
- Enable automatic activation and choose the battery percentage offered by the phone.
- Pick a threshold that protects the rest of your commute, work shift or evening rather than waiting until the phone is nearly empty.
- If available, enable the option to turn Power saving mode off after the phone reaches 100%.
A moderate threshold is usually more practical than activating the mode only at the last few percent. For example, someone who needs reliable messaging during a long trip can select a level high enough to cover the trip, while someone normally near a charger can choose a lower threshold to preserve full performance most of the day.
What to expect when it is active
Android describes Battery Saver behavior as limiting or turning off some background activity and turning on Dark theme. Visual effects, certain features, network connections and apps can experience delays. OxygenOS may apply additional optimizations. Expect less background work, not a magic increase in the battery’s capacity.
Keep ordinary Power saving mode enabled when you accept small delays in exchange for more runtime. If a notification, upload or wearable update is time-critical, check whether the relevant app has been restricted and adjust that app instead of disabling every battery control.
3. Use Super power saving mode only for an emergency
Super power saving mode is the most restrictive option documented in OnePlus battery controls. It is designed to stretch the final percentage when a charger is unavailable, not to run permanently. It can reduce background work, remove or limit active features and delay notifications.
When to turn it on
- You are away from a charger and need calls or essential messages to last until a specific time.
- Your remaining percentage is falling faster than expected and you cannot troubleshoot immediately.
- You need the phone primarily as an emergency contact device rather than as a camera, gaming device or streaming screen.
What to check after activation
Confirm that the functions you still need—phone calls, emergency contacts, a required authenticator or a planned journey—remain available. Do not assume a background navigation route, cloud upload or wearable sync will continue. Exit Super power saving mode when you can charge or when normal app behavior matters again.

4. Reduce display demand without making the phone unpleasant
Brightness
Brightness is one of the fastest user-controlled changes because the screen is often the largest visible load during active use. Pull down Quick Settings and lower the brightness slider, or open Settings > Display & brightness. Enable automatic brightness if it chooses comfortable levels in your usual rooms; if it repeatedly drives brightness higher than necessary, manual adjustment can save more power.
Do not leave the screen at maximum brightness simply because the N6 can reach it. In bright outdoor conditions you may need a higher level temporarily, then lower it when you return indoors.

Screen timeout
Open Settings > Display & brightness > Screen timeout or the equivalent display-timeout control and select the shortest interval that does not interrupt reading or work. A shorter timeout prevents an unattended screen from consuming power after you put the phone down. If you often read long documents, keep a practical interval and lock the phone manually when finished rather than choosing an inconveniently short value.
Refresh rate
If the N6 exposes refresh-rate choices, select a lower or adaptive option when maximum smoothness is unnecessary. The hardware supports up to 120 Hz, but OnePlus notes that the actual rate varies by app interface and game settings. Lowering it can reduce display demand, with a visible trade-off: scrolling, animations and supported games may feel less fluid.
Use the higher setting when gaming, scrolling is central to your work or the smoother response is worth the additional consumption. Use the lower setting during travel, long reading sessions or a low-charge period. If an individual game has its own frame-rate control, that setting can override or interact with the system choice.
Dark theme
Enable Dark theme in Display settings or Quick Settings if you prefer it. Google lists Dark theme among Android’s battery-saving options where available. Its benefit depends on the display technology, brightness and the apps you use, so treat it as a low-cost supporting measure rather than the main fix for rapid drain.
5. Turn off radios and location only when they are idle
Wireless features consume power through scanning, maintaining links and transmitting data. Turn off a feature when you know you will not use it, but do not disable connectivity blindly.

Use Wi‑Fi when practical, particularly where cellular reception is weak. A phone working hard to maintain a poor mobile signal can consume more power. Keep the connection needed for your current task: turn on Location for navigation, Bluetooth for a wearable and mobile data when leaving Wi‑Fi rather than following a blanket rule.
6. Adopt a low-battery usage plan
Some of the biggest drains are activities rather than hidden settings. Google specifically identifies long navigation sessions, video watching, graphics-heavy games, streaming, extended camera use and highly interactive apps as high-consumption work.

During a short low-charge period
- Download or queue content before leaving Wi‑Fi instead of streaming continuously.
- Lower brightness and refresh rate before starting a long trip.
- Use navigation only as needed, dim the screen between route checks and avoid leaving the map displayed when you are stationary.
- Pause graphics-heavy games and long camera sessions until you can charge.
- Lock the screen between messages and calls.
When the phone is hot
Stop intensive work, remove the phone from direct sunlight and avoid charging it under bedding or in a hot vehicle. Google warns that heat accelerates battery drain even while the phone is idle and can damage the battery. A hot phone can therefore lose charge faster without any new app appearing at the top of Battery usage.
7. Enable Optimised charging for long-term health
Optimised charging addresses battery aging rather than giving an immediate large runtime increase. If the N6 exposes it under Settings > Battery, enable the feature. OnePlus documents behavior that learns charging habits and delays charging beyond 80% until close to the expected start of use.
This is useful when the phone spends many hours connected overnight or at a desk. The feature may not complete its delayed charge immediately after you plug in, because its purpose is to reduce the time spent at a high state of charge. If you need a full battery right away, use the phone’s temporary override or charge normally when offered.
Keep the phone cool during 45W SuperVOOC charging. Fast charging is convenient, but heat remains a battery-health concern. Use an appropriate charger and cable, keep vents unobstructed and avoid demanding games while charging if the device becomes hot.
Settings to use for common situations
Normal workday
Leave refresh rate at your preferred setting, use automatic brightness if it behaves well, keep Bluetooth and Location on only for the accessories and apps you actually use, and let ordinary Power saving mode activate at a moderate threshold. Optimize apps that show persistent background use instead of restricting every app.
Long commute or travel day
Before leaving, charge the phone, lower brightness slightly, shorten screen timeout and choose a lower refresh rate if smoothness is not essential. Download media over Wi‑Fi, turn off hotspot and Bluetooth when unused, and set Power saving mode to activate early enough to cover the journey. Keep Location and mobile data available if you need navigation or transport updates.

Enable Power saving mode immediately, lower brightness, use the shortest comfortable timeout and stop streaming, gaming and extended camera use. Disable unused radios. If the remaining charge must last for emergency calls and the phone is still falling quickly, switch to Super power saving mode and accept delayed background activity.

Overnight charging
Enable Optimised charging, place the phone on a hard surface where heat can escape and avoid leaving a demanding app running. A stable Wi‑Fi connection and normal notifications can remain enabled if you need them; disabling everything is unnecessary when the phone is plugged in and cool.
Troubleshooting battery drain after the changes
The battery still falls quickly while idle
- Return to Settings > Battery > Battery usage and check background time.
- Look for a recently installed or updated app, weak-signal location or an accessory repeatedly reconnecting.
- Optimize or restrict the specific offender, then monitor another charge cycle.
- Restart the phone if an app or wireless service appears stuck.
If the phone remains hot while idle or the percentage drops abnormally after app controls are applied, contact OnePlus support rather than repeatedly enabling stricter modes.
Notifications arrive late
Check whether Power saving mode, Super power saving mode or App battery management is limiting the affected app. Remove a time-critical messaging, security or wearable app from restrictive background controls if the phone offers an exception. Also verify that Location, Bluetooth or mobile data has not been disabled for the service that needs it.

The screen feels less smooth
A lower refresh-rate choice or an active battery-saving mode may be responsible. Restore the preferred refresh-rate option and compare battery behavior. The N6 can reach 120 Hz, but the phone and individual apps may still select different rates.
Battery life changed after an update
Recheck Battery usage after the phone has completed its normal post-update work. App updates, indexing, new sync settings and changed display defaults can temporarily alter consumption. Apply app-level controls only after identifying a persistent pattern, and verify that an essential app has not been restricted accidentally.
Which changes matter most?
For immediate runtime, the usual priority is the screen, intensive foreground activity, radios that are actively scanning or transmitting, and apps with persistent background work. Power saving mode packages several restrictions automatically; Super power saving mode adds a stronger usability cost. Dark theme and Optimised charging are supportive measures, with Optimised charging aimed primarily at long-term health.
Choose based on the function you are protecting. If you need notifications and normal connectivity, start with Battery usage, brightness, timeout and a moderate Power saving threshold. If you need the last percentage to last until a charger, use Super power saving mode and stop heavy screen-on tasks. If your concern is battery capacity months from now, prioritize Optimised charging and heat control rather than keeping an emergency mode enabled all day.

A practical OnePlus N6 routine
- Review Battery usage once after a normal day and again when drain seems abnormal.
- Optimize only apps that remain high without corresponding foreground use.
- Set Power saving mode to activate automatically at a personally useful percentage.
- Use lower brightness, shorter timeout and a lower refresh rate during travel or low-charge periods.
- Switch off Bluetooth, Location, hotspot or mobile data only when the related function is not needed.
- Reserve Super power saving mode for charger-free emergencies.
- Keep the phone cool and use Optimised charging if the N6 offers it.
These controls preserve the N6’s essential functions while targeting the largest avoidable drains. Because actual results depend on signal, apps, settings, usage and battery age, your Battery usage screen—not the 8,000 mAh specification alone—should determine the next adjustment.
