The best bat house for a Pennsylvania yard is a correctly sized, multi-chamber wood box that gets at least seven hours of direct spring and summer sun, faces southeast or southwest, and is mounted 10–15 feet above ground with open space below. For a colony displaced from a building, install it on or near the former roost—often within 10–20 feet—and put it up before any humane exclusion. No design guarantees occupancy, but the right thermal conditions, dimensions, and placement give bats the best chance to use it.

What makes a bat house suitable for Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania’s seasonal temperatures make heat management the first design test. A box that is attractive but too small, shaded, or poorly ventilated can fail to hold a stable temperature. The Pennsylvania Game Commission, Penn State Extension, and Bat Conservation International all emphasize that dimensions, chamber count, materials, color, mounting height, and exposure work together. Buying a decorative single-chamber house cannot compensate for inadequate sun or clearance.

Choose a multi-chamber house built from natural wood, with rough internal surfaces that bats can grip. Bat Conservation International recommends natural wood because it provides stable thermal properties and traction. Penn State Extension warns that many small ready-made houses are too small to maintain even temperatures and may instead shelter wasps.

  • Chambers: Select a seven- or 14-chamber design when space and budget allow. More chambers provide a range of temperatures and increase usable roosting area.
  • Wood: Cedar or another durable, untreated exterior wood is practical; the inside must offer a secure grip through landing grooves or mesh.
  • Sun: Plan for at least seven hours of direct sunlight in spring and summer, not merely a bright location at midday.
  • Mounting: The structure must accept a wall, pole, or other secure mount at least 10–15 feet high.
  • Access: Install it where you can inspect and repair it without disturbing bats. Bat Conservation International specifically recommends keeping inspection access practical.

How many chambers and what capacity should you choose?

Pennsylvania Game Commission planning figures provide a useful way to compare designs. These are approximate capacities, not promises of occupancy. Actual use depends on siting, local bats, temperature, and whether the box is replacing a known roost.

A seven-chamber house is a sensible baseline for many yards. A 14-chamber model is appropriate when replacing a substantial maternity roost or when you have a suitable pole or building wall for the larger structure. Do not select a model solely because its marketing lists a high bat count; treat every capacity number as a manufacturer or plan estimate.

Placement rules that matter most in Pennsylvania

Face the box southeast or southwest

Orient the front toward the southeast or southwest so the box receives strong morning or afternoon warmth without relying on all-day exposure from a due-south wall. Penn State Extension’s current guidance calls for at least seven hours of direct spring and summer sun. In its study, boxes receiving seven or more hours housed displaced maternity colonies, while boxes receiving less were unsuccessful.

Check the site in spring and summer rather than judging from a winter photograph. Deciduous leaves can shade a box after installation, and a neighboring building can block late-day sun. Mark the sunniest part of the wall or pole before drilling.

Mount 10–15 feet high

Set the lower portion of the house at least 10–15 feet above ground. This height gives bats a clear approach and keeps the box away from routine human and pet traffic. A wall-mounted box also needs at least three feet of unobstructed space below it so bats can drop out, gain flight speed, and return from below.

Keep the flight path open

Do not place the entrance behind branches, a fence, roof edge, or dense vegetation. The three-foot clearance beneath a wall-mounted house is a minimum open zone, not a target to fill with landscaping. A pole location can work when the pole is stable and the approach is unobstructed.

Use the former roost when replacing an attic or wall site

For a displaced maternity colony, mount the alternative roost on or near the original building. Penn State Extension identifies a wall or chimney, or a pole within 10–20 feet of the former roost, as appropriate options. Bats already returning to that location are more likely to encounter a nearby replacement than a box installed elsewhere in the yard.

If a box must be relocated after bats establish it, move it gradually and only in fall or winter. A sudden move can leave returning bats searching at the old location.

Design and material checklist

Feature What to look for Why it matters
Chamber count and internal dimensions Seven or 14 chambers with dimensions based on Pennsylvania Game Commission or Bat Conservation International plans Small boxes may not maintain even temperatures; multiple chambers provide more roosting options.
Interior grip Landing grooves or securely attached mesh on every approach surface Bats need traction to enter, cling, and move between chambers.
Ventilation Purpose-designed vents that do not create a large draft at the roosting area Allows controlled temperature management without undermining the box’s warm zones.
Exterior material Natural, durable wood or a properly designed aluminum shell Wood offers stable thermal properties; metal designs must still provide suitable internal conditions.
Color and finish A finish appropriate to the amount of sun and Pennsylvania temperatures; no treatment that blocks interior grip Surface color affects heat gain, while slick coatings can prevent climbing.
Mounting hardware Hardware rated for the box’s weight and wind exposure, suitable for wall, pole, or tree mounting A loose or tilting box can become unusable or dangerous.
Inspection access Removable panel or another way to inspect seams and repair the exterior from a safe position Bat Conservation International recommends keeping maintenance accessible.

Use weatherproof exterior screws and sealants that are compatible with the chosen wood. Keep the interior unfinished and rough. Seal exterior joints where rain could enter, but do not block designed ventilation or reduce the entry opening.

When to install a bat house and when to exclude bats

Install before exclusion

Install the replacement roost months to a year before excluding bats from a building whenever possible. Penn State Extension recommends giving bats time to discover and use the box before the original entry is closed. A new house cannot be treated as an immediate substitute simply because it is mounted nearby.

Best installation window

January through April is the preferred installation period when possible. The box is in place before the main spring and summer activity, and you can complete mounting without disturbing an occupied maternity roost.

Observe exits from May through August

Use the May–August period to watch the building’s exits from a distance and determine whether bats are still present. Do not open a box, handle bats, or interfere with a maternity colony. Observation helps establish timing without trapping flightless young.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Seal openings only from September through April

After bats have left, seal building openings between September and April. Never seal an occupied entry during the period when flightless young could be trapped inside. If you cannot tell whether a building is vacant, obtain qualified wildlife assistance rather than closing the opening on a guess.

Wall, pole, tree, or chimney: choosing the mount

Wall mounting

A wall can provide dependable support and easy access for inspection. Pick a southeast- or southwest-facing wall with the required sun exposure and at least three feet of clear space below. Avoid locations directly over doors, patios, or areas where droppings would create a conflict.

Pole mounting

A pole gives you flexibility when no wall has enough sun. Set the box 10–15 feet above ground, brace the pole against wind, and keep vegetation from growing into the approach path. For a displaced colony, place the pole within 10–20 feet of the former roost when feasible.

Tree mounting

A tree can work only when the box remains sunny and the trunk provides a stable attachment. Trees that shade the box in summer or allow branches to obstruct the drop zone are poor choices. A tree also makes inspection and repair more difficult, so account for safe access before installation.

Chimney or former building site

Mounting on or near the original building, including a wall or chimney, keeps the replacement close to the bats’ established route. Confirm that the structure can carry the load and that mounting will not compromise masonry, flashing, or other building components.

How to install a bat house: a practical sequence

  1. Identify the former roost, if there is one. Mark the building opening or wall where bats emerge. If you are not replacing a known roost, map the sunniest suitable wall or pole location.
  2. Measure sunlight. Confirm at least seven hours of direct spring and summer sun and select a southeast or southwest orientation.
  3. Confirm height and clearance. Plan for the box to be at least 10–15 feet above ground, with three feet of open space below a wall-mounted unit and an unobstructed flight path.
  4. Choose the design. Select a correctly sized seven- or 14-chamber house with rough interior grooves or mesh, controlled ventilation, durable material, and a repairable exterior.
  5. Install before exclusion. Put the box up in January–April when possible, and ideally months to a year before sealing the building.
  6. Fasten it securely. Use weatherproof exterior screws and hardware suited to the wall, pole, or tree. Check that the box is plumb, stable, and not tilted toward a surface that blocks the exit.
  7. Leave the approach clear. Remove branches, vines, and other obstructions from the entry and the three-foot zone below a wall-mounted box.
  8. Record the installation. Note the date, orientation, height, mount type, and former-roost distance. These details make later troubleshooting possible without opening the house.
  9. Observe from May through August. Watch the original building and the box from a distance. Avoid opening or moving a house during the active season.
  10. Complete exclusion only after departure. From September through April, seal the original openings after confirming bats have left; never trap flightless young.

How to evaluate store-bought models

Use the siting checklist before comparing products. A model marketed as “outdoor” is not automatically large enough or thermally suitable for Pennsylvania. Ask the seller or manufacturer for the internal chamber dimensions, chamber count, ventilation layout, wood species, mounting instructions, and recommended orientation.

Question Acceptable evidence Warning sign
How many chambers? Seven or 14 chambers, with dimensions stated “Holds many bats” without chamber count or interior measurements
Can bats grip the inside? Landing grooves or durable mesh throughout Smooth painted plywood or plastic interior
Will it work in full sun? Ventilation and color guidance tied to sunny installations No information about heat, vents, or orientation
Can it be mounted high? Hardware and instructions for a 10–15-foot installation Decorative hanger intended for a porch or low tree branch
Can it be repaired? Accessible fasteners or removable panels Permanently sealed construction that cannot be inspected
Does the plan have an authority basis? Dimensions consistent with Pennsylvania Game Commission or Bat Conservation International plans Only a generic wildlife label with no specifications

One Lowe’s listing documents Nature’s Way CWH6-CP1, a three-chamber cedar model with vents, landing kerfs, removable chambers, and flush or post mounting. An Amazon-fulfilled WildYard listing documents another three-chamber cedar outdoor model marketed for tree, wall, or pole mounting. These examples illustrate useful features, but three chambers are smaller than the seven- and 14-chamber planning designs listed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Verify current dimensions, hardware, stock, and thermal suitability before buying; listings can change.

Maintenance without disturbing bats

During spring and summer occupancy

Penn State Extension says occupied boxes require no maintenance during spring and summer. Do not open the box, spray inside, remove bats, or attempt repairs while it is occupied. Observe from the ground instead and postpone nonessential work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In fall and winter

When bats have left, inspect the exterior for loose screws, water entry, warped boards, cracked seams, damaged mesh, and blocked vents. Tighten or replace exterior hardware, repair weather exposure, and keep the interior rough. Do not paint or seal over landing grooves.

After severe weather

Check that the box remains vertical and firmly attached after high winds, heavy snow, or ice. A box that shifts can change sun exposure or close the flight path. If safe access is not available, use a professional rather than climbing or opening an occupied box.

When to move a box

Move an established box only if necessary, and do so gradually in fall or winter. A sudden relocation can cause bats to return to the old position. If the original site is unsafe, plan the change outside the active season and preserve the same orientation and nearby landmarks when possible.

Why a bat house may remain empty

Pennsylvania guidance is explicit that no bat house is guaranteed to be used. Empty occupancy does not prove the design is defective. Review the conditions in this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Sun exposure: Recheck whether the box receives seven or more direct hours after leaves appear.
  • Orientation: Confirm that the front faces southeast or southwest rather than being shaded by a wall, roof, or tree.
  • Height: Verify the lower portion is at least 10–15 feet above ground.
  • Clearance: Ensure three feet of open space below a wall-mounted box and a clear approach from every direction bats use.
  • Size: Determine whether the house is a small decorative model that cannot maintain even temperatures.
  • Location: If replacing a roost, measure the distance to the former building; the Pennsylvania recommendation is on or near that structure or within 10–20 feet on a pole.
  • Timing: Check whether the box was installed months to a year before exclusion, rather than immediately beforehand.
  • Disturbance: Consider whether repeated opening, moving, or repair during spring and summer interrupted use.

Correct the physical problem in fall or winter, then allow another season. Do not fill a box with bedding, chemicals, or attractants; a properly built and sited house is the intervention supported by the cited Pennsylvania guidance.

Will a bat house keep bats out of an attic?

No. A bat house is an alternative roost, not a guaranteed barrier or eviction device. Its best use is as part of a planned, humane exclusion: install it before sealing the building, observe exits from May through August, and close openings only from September through April after bats have left. A box placed elsewhere in the yard cannot compensate for sealing an occupied entry or for a location that lacks sun, height, and clearance.

Do not promise mosquito elimination, either. The guidance supports providing suitable habitat and a replacement roost; it does not establish that any particular house will remove mosquitoes or prevent bats from using a building.

Safety and legal responsibilities

  • Never handle bats or open an occupied house as a routine inspection.
  • Do not seal a building opening when flightless young could be inside.
  • Use stable ladders, fall protection, and appropriate hardware for a 10–15-foot installation; hire qualified help when the site cannot be reached safely.
  • Keep people and pets away from the drop zone and avoid placing the box over a frequently used walkway.
  • Follow Pennsylvania Game Commission guidance for exclusion and wildlife handling, especially when a maternity colony is involved.

A Pennsylvania decision framework

  1. Replacing a known roost? Start on or near the original building, or use a pole within 10–20 feet.
  2. Have seven hours of sun? If not, reject the site before comparing products.
  3. Can you reach 10–15 feet with three feet of open space below? If not, choose another mount.
  4. Does the model have seven or 14 chambers and a grippable interior? If specifications are missing, treat it as a decorative product rather than a serious Pennsylvania roost.
  5. Can you install before exclusion and avoid spring–summer disturbance? If not, delay the project until you can follow the seasonal schedule.
  6. Can you inspect it in fall or winter? Choose a location and hardware that allow safe repairs without opening an occupied box.

The strongest Pennsylvania setup is therefore a correctly dimensioned, multi-chamber wood house—often seven chambers as a practical baseline—mounted 10–15 feet high, facing southeast or southwest, receiving at least seven hours of direct sun, and positioned close to a former roost when one exists. Treat the Game Commission capacity figures as planning estimates, maintain the exterior only when bats are absent, and regard occupancy as possible rather than guaranteed.
