The best B850 motherboards in 2026 are the MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK WIFI for most ATX builds, Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 for value, ASRock B850 Steel Legend WiFi for four NVMe drives, ASRock B850 Livemixer WiFi for creator I/O, and Gigabyte B850 EAGLE WIFI6E for the lowest-cost build—provided its price is meaningfully below the better-equipped alternatives.

AMD positions B850 as the mainstream AM5 chipset for Ryzen 7000-, 8000-, and 9000-series desktop processors. The chipset supports CPU and memory overclocking and provides a PCIe 5.0 x4 link, but the best board for your system depends on the CPU’s lane behavior, M.2 sharing, networking, USB requirements, VRM cooling, BIOS support, and live price.

Key takeaways

  • MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK WIFI is the best all-purpose choice, combining 5GbE, Wi-Fi 7, three M.2 slots, and a 14+2+1 power design with 80A stages.
  • Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 offers the strongest value when 2.5GbE is sufficient, with Wi-Fi 7, a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot, and three M.2 sockets.
  • ASRock B850 Steel Legend WiFi is the best option for four NVMe drives, but filling its fourth M.2 slot disables the secondary PCIe 4.0 x16 slot.
  • ASRock B850 Livemixer WiFi is the specialist choice for creators because it provides 14 rear USB ports, three PCIe slots, and Wi-Fi 7.
  • Gigabyte B850 EAGLE WIFI6E is the budget pick only when its Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5GbE specification makes it substantially cheaper than better-equipped alternatives.

What is B850, and who should buy it?

B850 is AMD’s mainstream AM5 chipset for Ryzen desktop systems. AMD’s official AM5 chipset table lists CPU and memory overclocking, one chipset-provided PCIe 5.0 x4 link, four SATA ports, six USB 3.x-class chipset ports, one USB 10Gbps port, and optional USB4 for B850 motherboards. The chipset provides a baseline; motherboard manufacturers determine the additional PCIe lanes, M.2 sockets, USB controllers, networking, audio, and voltage-regulator hardware.

B850 is a good fit for a new gaming, productivity, or creator PC using a Ryzen 7000-, 8000-, or 9000-series desktop processor. B850 generally costs less than a fully premium AM5 platform while retaining current-generation PCIe 5.0 storage support and, on many boards, PCIe 5.0 graphics support. The best board depends more on storage layout, rear I/O, networking, firmware support, and cooling than on small benchmark differences.

AMD’s chipset specification describes the chipset-level graphics arrangement as one x16 or two x8 PCIe 4.0 configurations, but many B850 motherboard specifications list a PCIe 5.0 x16 primary graphics slot because the CPU supplies those lanes. The distinction matters when planning an APU or several expansion cards.

Do all B850 motherboards provide the same PCIe behavior with Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000?

No. B850 motherboards support Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 desktop processors, but the processor can change the link width and generation available to the primary graphics slot. Many boards provide PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics support with Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 9000 processors, while some Ryzen 8000 APUs reduce the primary slot to PCIe 4.0 x8 or PCIe 4.0 x4.

Processor family Common behavior to check Why it matters
Ryzen 7000 Many boards expose PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics Suitable for a single current-generation graphics card and a PCIe 5.0 CPU-connected SSD, subject to the board’s lane map
Ryzen 8000 APUs Some systems reduce the primary slot to PCIe 4.0 x8 or x4 Check the CPU-specific lane table before buying a high-end graphics card or multiple expansion cards
Ryzen 9000 Many boards expose PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics Provides the broadest opportunity to use the board’s advertised PCIe 5.0 graphics and storage features

AMD’s Socket AM5 motherboard quick-reference guide and each motherboard’s CPU lane table are better authorities than the chipset name alone. The Ryzen 5 8500G specification illustrates why an 8000-series APU pairing deserves separate checking.

Which B850 motherboard is best overall?

The MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK WIFI is the best overall B850 motherboard for a conventional ATX gaming or productivity build. MSI lists Ryzen 7000-, 8000-, and 9000-series support, four DDR5 slots for up to 256GB, memory overclocking up to DDR5-8200-plus, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, 5GbE, three M.2 sockets, and four SATA ports in its official specifications.

The Tomahawk’s combination is unusually balanced. A 5GbE port is more useful than 2.5GbE for a fast local network or NAS, while Wi-Fi 7 provides a newer wireless option when the router, operating system, and local regulations support it. Three M.2 sockets cover a typical gaming PC, work PC, and secondary project-drive layout without turning the board into a storage-specialist design.

According to The FPS Review’s 2026 review, the Tomahawk uses a 14+2+1 power design with 80A smart power stages, retained rated M.2 speeds in its test configuration, and reached a maximum measured MOSFET temperature of 58°C during the reviewer’s stress test. The review scored the board 9.3 overall and regarded it as one of the strongest values around its approximately $229 launch price.

Is the Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 the best-value B850 board?

Yes, when 2.5GbE is enough, the Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 is the best-value ATX alternative. Gigabyte lists four DDR5 slots supporting up to 256GB, Ryzen 7000/8000/9000 support, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, 2.5GbE, one PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot, a CPU-connected PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 socket, two additional M.2 sockets, and four SATA ports in its official specification.

The AORUS Elite is the board to compare against the Tomahawk when the price difference matters more than 5GbE. The board retains the major features most gaming builds need: PCIe 5.0 graphics and storage support, Wi-Fi 7, three M.2 slots, four memory slots, and standard ATX expansion.

According to The FPS Review’s 2025 review, testing covered Ryzen compatibility, PBO, memory overclocking, VRM cooling, and DDR5 operation up to 8000 MT/s in the review configuration. The review rated the board strongly for features, stability, performance, and value. The main practical compromises were the primary M.2 placement and the fact that only one M.2 heatsink is supplied.

Check the exact board revision before buying. Gigabyte lists different audio-codec details for revisions 1.0 and 1.1, so the revision number and the current support page should be part of the purchase decision.

Which B850 motherboard is best for four NVMe drives?

The ASRock B850 Steel Legend WiFi is the best B850 motherboard for a build that genuinely needs four onboard NVMe drives. ASRock lists one PCIe Gen5 x4 M.2 socket and three PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 sockets, four SATA ports, a PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, 2.5GbE, and a 14+2+1 power design using 80A Dr.MOS devices on the Steel Legend specification page.

The fourth M.2 socket is useful for separate operating-system, game, scratch, and project drives, but it is not free expansion. ASRock documents that occupying the fourth M.2 slot disables the secondary PCIe 4.0 x16 slot. A single-GPU build usually tolerates that trade-off; a workstation using a capture card, secondary controller, or other PCIe card may not.

Choose the Steel Legend when the fourth socket solves a real layout problem, not simply because four is a larger number than three. Compare the CPU/chipset connection for every M.2 slot, the slot-sharing table, heatsink clearance, and any SATA or USB bandwidth conflicts before installing drives. A PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD is an optional way to use the Gen5 slot, but a less expensive Gen4 drive can still be the better capacity-per-dollar choice when the workload does not benefit from peak sequential throughput.

Is the ASRock B850 Livemixer WiFi good for streaming and content creation?

The ASRock B850 Livemixer WiFi is the best specialist choice for creators who need many directly connected peripherals, rather than the default gaming recommendation. Tom’s Hardware highlights 14 rear USB ports, three PCIe slots, 2.5GbE, and integrated Wi-Fi 7. Those connections suit a streamer, podcaster, video editor, or producer using several microphones, cameras, capture devices, controllers, and external storage units.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

According to Tom’s Hardware’s 2025 review, the Livemixer uses a 17-phase power design with 14 phases dedicated to Vcore and could run a Ryzen 9 9950X or Ryzen 9 9950X3D at stock settings. The same review identified power-delivery cooling as a limitation compared with more substantial high-end boards, so sustained heavy workloads deserve good case airflow and realistic power settings.

The review also had to substitute its initial Kingston DDR5-6000 test kit because of a compatibility issue. That result does not prove a general memory defect, but it does make checking ASRock’s current memory QVL and keeping the BIOS current especially important. The board’s 20Gbps USB-C connection is on the front panel rather than the rear, and the third M.2 slot cannot be used simultaneously with PCIe 3.

When is the Gigabyte B850 EAGLE WIFI6E the right choice?

The Gigabyte B850 EAGLE WIFI6E is the right choice when a cost-conscious ATX build needs the core B850 platform but does not need Wi-Fi 7 or 5GbE. Gigabyte lists Ryzen 7000/8000/9000 support, four DDR5 slots for up to 256GB, Wi-Fi 6E, 2.5GbE, one PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot, three M.2 sockets, four SATA ports, and Q-Flash Plus BIOS updating in its official product information.

The Eagle is not automatically the best bargain. A US retail snapshot supplied with the research placed the board near $160, but retailer prices and stock change. Compare the live price with the AORUS Elite and Tomahawk before choosing the Eagle solely because of its nominal budget position. If the difference is small, Wi-Fi 7, 5GbE, stronger cooling, or additional board features may justify moving up.

How do the five recommended B850 boards compare?

Motherboard Best for M.2 layout Networking Main compromise
MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK WIFI Most gaming and productivity ATX builds Three M.2 sockets; rated speeds remained intact in independent testing Wi-Fi 7 and 5GbE Three rather than four M.2 sockets; primary M.2 clearance may be tight
Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 Value-focused gaming and general use Three M.2 sockets, including one CPU-connected PCIe 5.0 x4 slot Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5GbE Only one M.2 heatsink supplied; revision-specific audio details
ASRock B850 Steel Legend WiFi Four-drive NVMe layouts One PCIe Gen5 x4 plus three PCIe Gen4 x4 sockets Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5GbE Fourth M.2 slot disables the secondary PCIe 4.0 x16 slot
ASRock B850 Livemixer WiFi Streaming and creator peripherals Three M.2 sockets; third conflicts with PCIe 3 Wi-Fi 7 and 2.5GbE 20Gbps USB-C is front-panel; cooling is less substantial than premium boards
Gigabyte B850 EAGLE WIFI6E Lower-cost ATX systems Three M.2 sockets Wi-Fi 6E and 2.5GbE Less capable wireless and wired networking than the top picks

Which B850 motherboard should you choose for your build?

Build priority Best starting point Decision rule
Single-GPU gaming MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK WIFI Choose the Tomahawk for 5GbE and balanced I/O; choose the AORUS Elite if it is meaningfully cheaper and 2.5GbE is sufficient
Ryzen 9 productivity or rendering MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK WIFI or ASRock B850 Steel Legend WiFi Favor substantial heatsinks and documented power delivery; use the Livemixer at stock settings only with attention to airflow
Four NVMe drives ASRock B850 Steel Legend WiFi Use the fourth M.2 slot only if losing the secondary PCIe 4.0 x16 slot does not affect the expansion-card plan
Many USB microphones, cameras, or capture devices ASRock B850 Livemixer WiFi Prioritize its 14 rear USB ports and three PCIe slots over gaming-focused extras
Lowest practical purchase price Gigabyte B850 EAGLE WIFI6E Buy it when the live price is clearly below the better-equipped boards and Wi-Fi 6E plus 2.5GbE meet the network requirement

How should gamers evaluate a B850 motherboard?

For a single-GPU gaming PC, prioritize reliable CPU support, adequate VRM cooling, one suitable primary graphics slot, at least two M.2 sockets, and the networking standard the home network can actually use. Premium power delivery does not automatically produce higher gaming performance when the processor runs at stock settings or normal PBO limits.

The independent testing of the Tomahawk, AORUS Elite, and Livemixer found broadly competent platform performance. The meaningful buying differences are connectivity, storage lane allocation, thermals, firmware support, memory compatibility, physical clearance, and street price. A motherboard should not be labeled the fastest B850 option without same-CPU, same-memory, and same-firmware testing.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How important are M.2 lane-sharing details?

M.2 lane-sharing details are important whenever a build uses more than one SSD or any additional PCIe card. An M.2 count tells you how many sockets exist, not whether every socket runs from the CPU, whether a slot loses bandwidth, or whether installing a drive disables another connector.

Best Value
MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk MAX WiFi II Motherboard - Supports AMD Ryzen 9000/8000 / 7000 Processors, AM5-80A SPS VRM, DDR5 Memory Boost (up to 8400+ MT/s OC), PCIe 5.0 x16, M.2 Gen5, Wi-Fi 7, 5G L

  • QUADRUPLE M.2 CONNECTORS - Storage options include 2 x M.2 Gen5 x4 128Gbps slots, 1 x M.2 Gen4 x4 64Gbps slot and 1 x M.2 Gen4 x2 32Gbps slot; Features EZ M.2 Shield Frozr II to prevent thermal throttling and EZ M.2 Clip II for EZ DIY experience
  • CONNECTIVITY - Network hardware includes a full-speed Wi-Fi 7 module with Bluetooth 5.4 & 5Gbps LAN; Rear ports include USB 20G Type-C and 7.1 USB High Performance Audio with Audio Boost 5 (supports S/PDIF output)
  • The Tomahawk has three M.2 sockets, and The FPS Review found that the tested slots retained their rated speeds without the principal sharing compromises seen on some competitors.
  • The AORUS Elite has three M.2 sockets, including a PCIe 5.0 x4 CPU-connected slot; its primary M.2 placement deserves a clearance check.
  • The Steel Legend has four M.2 sockets, but its fourth socket disables the secondary PCIe 4.0 x16 slot.
  • The Livemixer has three M.2 sockets, and its third M.2 slot cannot operate at the same time as PCIe 3.
  • The Eagle has three M.2 sockets; check Gigabyte’s current manual for the exact lane and connector-sharing map before adding expansion cards.

For most game libraries, three sockets are already sufficient. If four drives are essential, the Steel Legend’s advantage is concrete, but the slot-sharing trade-off must be accepted before purchase. If a Gen5 drive is not required, capacity, controller behavior, thermals, and price can make a Gen4 SSD the more sensible choice.

Is Wi-Fi 7 or 5GbE worth paying for?

Wi-Fi 7 and 5GbE are worth paying for only when the rest of the network can use them. The Tomahawk provides 5GbE; the AORUS Elite, Steel Legend, Livemixer, and Eagle provide 2.5GbE. The Tomahawk, AORUS Elite, Steel Legend, and Livemixer include Wi-Fi 7, while the Eagle uses Wi-Fi 6E.

Networking requirement Best match What to verify
Fast wired NAS or multi-gigabit LAN Tomahawk with 5GbE The switch, NAS, cabling, and other endpoint must support the faster link
Ordinary internet and local transfers Any 2.5GbE board 2.5GbE is usually sufficient when the internet plan and LAN do not exceed it
Newer wireless router Any Wi-Fi 7 recommendation Router support, operating-system requirements, and local 6GHz regulation affect the available features
Cost-sensitive wireless build Eagle with Wi-Fi 6E Wi-Fi 6E may be adequate if Wi-Fi 7 features are not needed

Wi-Fi 7’s 6GHz availability depends on local regulation, and full functionality also depends on the operating system and compatible network equipment. Do not pay for a wireless label alone if the router, location, or internet connection cannot benefit from it.

What should you check before installing the CPU, memory, and SSDs?

  1. Confirm the exact CPU support list. All five recommendations target AM5 and list Ryzen 7000-, 8000-, and 9000-series support, but the CPU-specific BIOS and PCIe lane behavior still matter. Check the manufacturer’s current support page for the exact processor model.
  2. Check the BIOS recovery method. Gigabyte documents Q-Flash Plus on the AORUS Elite and Eagle, and ASRock documents CPU-less BIOS flashing for the Steel Legend. A flashback feature can update firmware without a CPU or memory installed, which is valuable for a new build.
  3. Choose memory from the QVL where possible. Use a compatible DDR5-6000 EXPO RAM kit as a starting point for an AM5 build, but verify the exact kit against the board’s QVL. The Livemixer review’s substituted Kingston DDR5-6000 kit shows why a nominal speed rating does not guarantee every kit will train successfully.
  4. Map every M.2 and PCIe slot. Record which M.2 socket is Gen5, which sockets are CPU- or chipset-connected, and which slot or connector is disabled when a drive is installed.
  5. Check physical clearance. The Tomahawk’s primary M.2 position may be close to a large graphics-card backplate or SSD heatsink, while the AORUS Elite’s primary M.2 placement was also noted as a compromise in independent testing.
  6. Update firmware and official drivers after the first boot. Use AMD and the motherboard manufacturer’s support resources first, particularly for chipset, LAN, Wi-Fi, audio, and storage-controller issues.

How much should a B850 motherboard cost?

B850 pricing is volatile, so use live retailer pricing at the time of purchase rather than treating a review price as a permanent MSRP. The stronger ATX models were reviewed or positioned around the roughly $190–$230 range, while the Eagle appeared near $160 in the supplied US retail snapshot.

More specifically, The FPS Review’s Tomahawk page showed an Amazon listing at $219 on August 11, 2026, and The FPS Review’s AORUS Elite page showed an Amazon listing at $189.95 on the same date. Those are dated snapshots, not guaranteed current prices. The supplied Eagle retail snapshot showed $159.99, but retailer availability and pricing can change.

Compare the total feature gap, not just the board’s sticker price. Paying a small premium for built-in 5GbE, Wi-Fi 7, better M.2 heatsinking, or more suitable power delivery can be sensible; paying extra for features a single-GPU gaming system will never use is not.

Final verdict

Buy the MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK WIFI for the safest all-round recommendation. Choose the Gigabyte B850 AORUS ELITE WIFI7 when its value and Wi-Fi 7 matter more than 5GbE. Choose the ASRock B850 Steel Legend WiFi for four NVMe drives, the ASRock B850 Livemixer WiFi for unusually heavy USB and creator I/O, and the Gigabyte B850 EAGLE WIFI6E only when its lower price outweighs its older networking specification.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK WIFI is the best B850 motherboard for most 2026 builds because it balances VRM capability, 5GbE, Wi-Fi 7, storage, and price. The Steel Legend wins for four-drive storage, the Livemixer wins for creator I/O, and the Eagle wins only when it is substantially cheaper.
