Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a conventional SDR YouTube Live channel, start with RTMPS, H.264, CBR, AAC audio, and a two-second GOP/keyframe interval. Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match the actual output and source; there is no universal bitrate for every channel. Then test representative motion and audio and watch YouTube’s stream health before relying on the feed continuously.
Recommended AWS Elemental MediaLive settings for YouTube
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the destination baseline. These are starting settings for a conventional SDR stream, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. MediaLive’s available controls and output-group configuration depend on the workflow you build.
| Setting | Starting choice | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Destination protocol | RTMPS | Use encrypted RTMPS delivery when the MediaLive output and YouTube workflow support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for delivery to its servers (YouTube encoder settings). |
| Video codec | H.264 for conventional SDR | Match the codec to the selected MediaLive output path and YouTube workflow. YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 support, but those are not interchangeable with the H.264 bitrate figures below. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use CBR as the YouTube-facing baseline. AWS documents QVBR and VBR alternatives; test any departure from YouTube’s stated CBR guidance in the complete workflow. |
| GOP/keyframe interval | 2 seconds | Set MediaLive GOP size to two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Frame rate | Match the production requirement, up to 60 fps | Do not choose 60 fps automatically if the source and channel do not need it. |
| Audio | AAC | Choose sample rate and channel layout for the actual program and input mode. YouTube lists AAC or MP3; AAC is the straightforward baseline here. |
| Pixel aspect and scan | Square pixels; progressive scan | Use these YouTube-recommended advanced settings for the conventional setup. |
YouTube says it transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. The bitrate you send is therefore an ingest setting, not the bitrate every viewer necessarily receives.
What bitrate should you use for YouTube Live?
Choose the H.264 row for the output resolution and frame rate you will actually send. The figures below are YouTube’s published recommended ingest rates on its current encoder-settings page, accessed October 3, 2026; they are recommendations, not independently measured MediaLive targets.

| Output | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate | YouTube H.264 minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 7 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 42 Mbps | 11 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 50 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
The minimums are floor recommendations, not preferred targets. Do not use the H.264 rates as if they were the separate AV1 or H.265 recommendations. Select the highest output your source, audience needs, and available delivery path justify; a higher resolution or frame rate is not automatically better if the source does not provide it.
How to set GOP and rate control in MediaLive
Set the GOP to two seconds
MediaLive exposes GOP size with a choice of units, including frames or seconds. Set the size to 2 seconds, or calculate the equivalent number of frames for the configured frame rate if your output workflow uses frames. For example, 30 fps corresponds to 60 frames in two seconds; 60 fps corresponds to 120. Confirm the resulting interval in the output rather than assuming the frame count stayed correct after a frame-rate change.

Use CBR for the YouTube-facing baseline
YouTube lists CBR in its live encoder guidance. AWS describes CBR as useful where variable rates are not handled by the distribution path, while its MediaLive documentation also explains QVBR and VBR. QVBR targets a quality level subject to a maximum bitrate; VBR varies with video complexity. AWS says VBR is recommended instead of QVBR when maintaining a specific average bitrate is desired. Those AWS options do not replace YouTube’s platform-specific CBR recommendation: if you choose another mode, validate bitrate behavior and stream health with your actual content and destination.
AWS’s MediaLive API reference gives QVBR examples by target viewing device: quality level 8–10 with a 4 Mbps maximum for primary screens, level 7 with 1.5–3 Mbps for PC or tablet, and level 6 with 1–1.5 Mbps for smartphones. These are AWS QVBR examples, not substitutes for YouTube’s published output bitrate table. The API reference also says ENHANCED_QUALITY may provide slightly better video quality without increased bitrate with QVBR or CBR, but might increase channel costs; it is optional, not a required YouTube setting (AWS Elemental MediaLive API Reference).

Should you use RTMPS or HLS?
RTMPS for ordinary SDR streaming
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended baseline for encrypted delivery to its servers. For a conventional SDR channel, use it when the MediaLive output and account workflow support it. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP.
HLS for particular HDR workflows
HDR is a separate configuration decision. YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR and says HLS may be considered when the encoder lacks the required capabilities over RTMP. AWS’s 4K HDR example uses an HLS output group rather than RTMP. That does not mean every YouTube channel needs HLS.

AWS published that example on April 14, 2021. It specifies a YouTube HLS endpoint, HLS Basic Put, two-second segments, 3840×2160 HEVC at 20 Mbps, 59.94 fps, a two-second GOP, HDR10, and AAC audio. Treat it as a concrete, dated HDR example—not a current general-purpose template. Its 20 Mbps HEVC HDR value is not comparable to YouTube’s current H.264 4K SDR recommendations (AWS 4K HDR HLS tutorial).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose MediaLive input specifications from the source
MediaLive input specifications affect billing and resource allocation. AWS advises choosing codec, resolution tier, and bitrate values that meet or exceed the most demanding input feeds; insufficient allocation can degrade output. There is no responsible universal input specification without knowing the actual source feed. Check the feed’s codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, then configure capacity for its most demanding expected mode (AWS Elemental MediaLive User Guide).

Preflight a 24/7 channel
- Confirm the source. Verify the input is continuously available and that its codec, dimensions, frame rate, and bitrate are within the MediaLive input specification.
- Build the YouTube-facing output. Start with RTMPS, H.264 SDR, CBR, AAC, square pixels, progressive scan, and a two-second GOP; select the bitrate row that matches the intended resolution and frame rate.
- Test representative content. Check both the sound and the most demanding motion or scene changes in the program. Look for unexpected softness, artifacts, audio problems, or bitrate behavior inconsistent with the chosen mode.
- Check YouTube stream health. Monitor the destination’s health during the test and resolve warnings before treating the feed as ready for continuous operation.
- Plan for source and service interruptions. A 24/7 channel needs input and operational design suited to its source and availability requirements. There is no single failover design that fits every installation.
Common problems and fixes
- Stream health warnings or unstable ingest: Check that the selected bitrate matches the resolution and frame rate, verify the output is CBR as intended, and inspect the connection and output configuration. Retest while monitoring YouTube stream health.
- Keyframe or GOP warnings: Confirm MediaLive is producing a two-second interval. If GOP is specified in frames, recalculate after any frame-rate change.
- Degraded picture despite adequate output settings: Inspect the source feed and input specification. AWS warns that insufficient input resource allocation can degrade output; also confirm that the source itself contains the detail and motion quality expected.
- HDR output does not fit the ordinary RTMPS setup: Treat HDR as its own workflow. Check YouTube’s current codec/protocol guidance and use HLS only when the required encoder capability or workflow calls for it.
- Unexpected MediaLive resource costs: Review the input specification and optional quality settings against actual feed requirements. AWS notes that input specifications affect billing/resource allocation and that ENHANCED_QUALITY may increase channel costs.
