For a stereo kirtan livestream, use AAC audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps, with constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and RTMPS ingest when your encoder supports it. These are YouTube’s published stereo recommendations; a higher bitrate is not a guarantee of better sound. For a continuous broadcast, also test the complete audio-and-video upload path, keep a local recording if you need an archive, and confirm you have rights to stream the specific recording or performance.

Recommended YouTube audio settings

Setting Recommended configuration What to know
Audio codec AAC YouTube also accepts MP3 for live audio. Choose a codec supported by your encoder and workflow. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance does not establish a quality comparison test between AAC and MP3.
Sample rate 44.1 kHz This is YouTube’s published stereo recommendation.
Audio bitrate 128 kbps, stereo This is the documented stereo target, not a promise that higher bitrates will sound better to viewers.
Bitrate mode CBR Use constant bitrate when available to keep the encoder output consistent.
Ingest connection RTMPS, when available YouTube says RTMPS encrypts stream data to and through Google’s servers.

These values apply to the audio track. Set video resolution and bitrate separately according to the visual content and a stable upload connection; increasing video bitrate does not improve audio settings.

Configure and test the whole stream

  1. Set the encoder’s audio output. Select AAC, 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps stereo and CBR if those controls are available. If the encoder only offers MP3, YouTube accepts it for live audio; the published stereo bitrate recommendation remains 128 kbps.
  2. Choose video settings for the picture and connection. For a static devotional image or simple visual, avoid choosing an unnecessarily demanding video configuration. Match the encoder’s resolution and video bitrate to the visual content and what your upload can sustain.
  3. Test at the intended configuration. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate. Test with audio and video resembling the actual broadcast rather than relying on a generic connection result.
  4. Check live health and messages. During the test stream, monitor YouTube’s stream health and any encoder or YouTube warnings. Address instability before treating the configuration as suitable for a continuous broadcast.
  5. Use RTMPS if supported. Select YouTube’s RTMPS ingest option in the encoder or streaming workflow when it is available, and use the stream key associated with the intended YouTube live stream.

YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. A dedicated hardware encoder is optional; the available guidance does not establish that one is necessary for an audio-focused kirtan stream or identify a particular model as best.

Plan a 24-hour stream around replay and rewind limits

A continuous 24-hour broadcast has a trade-off: YouTube warns that a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need to preserve the full kirtan, record a local archive as a backup instead of relying on the YouTube replay. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Rewind is a separate concern. YouTube says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If listeners need to rewind reliably, account for that limitation when planning the broadcast; YouTube’s guidance does not specify a restart interval that guarantees archive capture or DVR behavior. Details are in YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Check music rights before going live

Kirtan’s devotional character does not itself grant permission to stream a recording or performance. YouTube’s livestream terms require the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers and other rights participants. Check permissions for the particular recording and performance, including the territories where it will be available. This is a practical reading of YouTube’s stated requirements, not a legal determination about any specific song.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it temporarily or terminate it. Even a licensed third-party recording can be interrupted if the channel has not been added to the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams, and ask the rights owner about allowlisting where appropriate. YouTube’s livestream terms set out the rights requirement.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not keep an encoder computer running at home, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud. The setup is: upload the recording, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. Nothing needs to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting from a camera, and streams to YouTube.
