Those are YouTube’s recommended live settings for stereo audio. If you upload a finished loop instead of sending a live feed, use YouTube’s separate upload guidance: 48 kHz audio and a recommended 384 kbps stereo bitrate.
Choose settings for the route you are using
The right audio format depends on how the audio reaches YouTube. Live RTMP/RTMPS, live HLS ingestion, and a pre-encoded upload have different published guidance. Do not apply the upload bitrate to a live stream, or vice versa.

Should you use AAC or MP3 for YouTube Live?
For a conventional stereo RTMP/RTMPS sleep stream, AAC is the straightforward choice: YouTube supports both AAC and MP3, and recommends the stereo settings above. YouTube’s live encoder guidance identifies AAC as the supported choice when sending 5.1 surround. A typical ambient sleep stream has no stated need for 5.1, so stereo AAC is a sensible default.
This is a compatibility and settings recommendation, not evidence that AAC always sounds better than MP3 for ambient recordings. YouTube’s published guidance does not provide a sleep-content-specific listening comparison.

Set up a stereo live stream
- Confirm the ingest route. If your encoder sends a conventional live feed using RTMP or RTMPS, use the live settings below. If you use HLS, follow its separate AAC and single-track requirements.
- Set the audio codec to AAC. Choose AAC in the encoder’s audio output settings.
- Set the sample rate to 44.1 kHz. This is YouTube’s recommended stereo sample rate for RTMP/RTMPS live streaming.
- Set the audio bitrate to 128 kbps. This is YouTube’s recommended stereo live bitrate, not its stereo upload recommendation.
- Keep the output stereo unless you have a reason to send surround. The recommendation here is for a stereo ambient bed. If sending 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC.
- Test before the 24/7 launch. Use audio and video resembling the planned stream, then check YouTube’s stream health and listen to the result. YouTube Help advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
When the loop is an uploaded file
If you are uploading a finished video rather than sending a live RTMP/RTMPS feed, follow YouTube’s upload encoding recommendations: 48 kHz audio, with AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio listed, and 384 kbps recommended for stereo audio. These are upload settings; they are not the recommended stereo bitrate for an RTMP/RTMPS live stream.
A file’s audio format alone cannot keep a 24/7 broadcast continuous. The playback and streaming setup must also keep running, and the cited YouTube guidance does not promise uninterrupted playback or prescribe a sleep-stream failover system.

Make the ambient audio comfortable to listen to
YouTube’s cited technical pages specify delivery formats and encoding values, but do not establish a sleep-specific loudness target or dynamics preset. As a production choice, make the loop’s perceived level consistent and check transitions between the end and beginning of the audio. Listen to the actual test stream rather than relying only on the encoder’s settings display.
Check stream health and diagnose audio warnings
YouTube’s live stream health guidance can identify audio configuration issues, including an unsupported codec, a bitrate above or below recommended values, and sample-rate problems. If an audio warning appears, check the encoder output against the settings for the route you selected.

- Unsupported codec: For RTMP/RTMPS, switch to AAC or MP3; for HLS, use AAC as specified in Google’s HLS ingestion guide.
- Bitrate warning: For stereo RTMP/RTMPS live audio, check for 128 kbps. For an uploaded stereo file, check the separate 384 kbps upload recommendation.
- Sample-rate warning: Check that the live RTMP/RTMPS stereo output is set to 44.1 kHz, or that an uploaded file follows the 48 kHz upload guidance.
- Unexpected silence or a broken loop: Confirm the source is playing and that the encoder or playback process remains active. These are continuity checks, not format guarantees.
