For a stereo YouTube Live stream, use 128 Kbps AAC as the direct platform-listed setting. Twitch lists 160 kbps AAC as a maximum, not a required target. If you need one stereo setting for both services, 128 Kbps AAC is a practical shared choice based on those separate platform specifications.
Recommended audio bitrate by platform
| Platform | Audio codec guidance | Stereo bitrate | Sample rate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live | AAC or MP3; AAC is required for its RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 option | 128 Kbps | 44.1 kHz for stereo | Use 128 Kbps as the published stereo encoder setting. |
| Twitch | AAC | Up to 160 kbps | The Twitch guidance says AAC sampling frequency may be any value | 160 kbps is a maximum, not a direction to always select that value. |
These are the platforms’ published encoder specifications, not results from a comparative audio-quality test. YouTube also lists 384 Kbps and 48 kHz for 5.1 surround sound. Its 5.1 guidance applies only to AAC over RTMP/RTMPS. Use the channel layout your production actually sends; stereo settings are not interchangeable with 5.1 settings.
What to use when streaming to YouTube and Twitch
For a single stereo configuration intended for both platforms, 128 Kbps AAC is a reasonable common setting: it matches YouTube’s listed stereo bitrate and remains below Twitch’s published AAC maximum. This is an inference from the two platforms’ separate guidance, not a universal standard. If your encoder or multistream workflow allows destination-specific settings, verify how it applies audio settings to each output.
For Twitch alone, you do not need to raise audio to 160 kbps just because that is the maximum. Choose a bitrate supported by the destination and your encoding workflow, then test the actual feed.

How to set and verify audio bitrate
- Confirm the destination and channel layout. Choose the relevant service’s current encoder guidance and decide whether the output is stereo or 5.1. For YouTube stereo, its published figures are 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz; for YouTube 5.1, they are 384 Kbps and 48 kHz, using AAC for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Set the encoder’s audio codec and bitrate. Select AAC at 128 Kbps for YouTube stereo. For Twitch, keep AAC at or below its 160 kbps maximum. If sending to both with one stereo setting, use 128 Kbps AAC as the common choice.
- Check the sample rate and channel count. Make sure the encoder output matches the intended layout. A bitrate setting alone does not convert a mono or stereo capture into a correctly produced surround mix.
- Run a representative test before the event. Include the kind of speech, music, or other audio you expect to stream, along with the intended video. On YouTube, monitor stream health during the test and event.
What bitrate can—and cannot—fix
Bitrate describes the encoded audio data rate; it does not by itself establish how good the captured sound is. The cited platform specifications identify supported settings, but they do not show that choosing a higher bitrate beyond a service’s guidance will make a stream perceptibly better. A microphone or audio interface can affect what is captured, but neither YouTube’s nor Twitch’s cited bitrate guidance requires buying hardware to choose an encoder bitrate.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your YouTube stream uses uploaded prerecorded video rather than a live camera or microphone feed, StreamNeo can loop it from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it does not re-encode the file. StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. This is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera-based live broadcasting. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
