Best overall for a modern NBA Jam-style session: NBA The Run. It keeps the exaggerated, quick-match spirit in a current 3-on-3 format with cross-play. Choose NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 for licensed 2-on-2 basketball and a large roster, NBA Playgrounds for the simplest party-friendly format, Basketball Classics for tactical retro 5-on-5, or NBA Street for trick-heavy streetball atmosphere on older systems.
Quick comparison: the best NBA Jam alternatives
NBA Jam’s appeal comes from a very specific combination: recognizable NBA players, exaggerated moves, short matches, simple controls and the instant fun of playing beside another person. No single modern game reproduces every part of that formula, so the right successor depends on whether you value current hardware, 2-on-2 chaos, streetball style, local multiplayer or deeper team tactics.
| Game | Format | Best for | Multiplayer | Platforms or availability noted in the cited material |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NBA The Run | 3-on-3 knockout arcade basketball | Modern online play and short competitive sessions | Cross-play, private tournaments, custom and AI matches | PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam at launch |
| NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 | 2-on-2 licensed arcade basketball | The closest current licensed 2-on-2 substitute | Local and online play, including four-player online matches and co-op versus AI | PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Windows PC |
| NBA Playgrounds | 2-on-2 arcade basketball | Easy-to-learn party play | Offline and online multiplayer; online tournaments | PlayStation 4 listing dated May 8, 2017 |
| Basketball Classics | Retro 5-on-5 basketball | Local sessions with more tactical decision-making | Local multiplayer | Xbox listing; Xbox Wire reported a $9.99 price at publication |
| NBA Street games | Streetball formats with trick moves | Historical streetball style and older-console collecting | Varies by entry and platform | Older releases including NBA Street Vol. 2, V3, Showdown and Homecourt |
The fastest decision is straightforward: pick NBA The Run if you have a current console or gaming PC and want online competition; pick NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 if two-on-two licensed action matters most; pick Basketball Classics if you would rather make possession-by-possession decisions than chase constant dunks.

NBA The Run is the strongest first stop for someone finishing a session of NBA Jam today. NBA.com describes it as a 3-on-3 arcade game inspired by NBA Jam, NBA Street and NBA Playgrounds. That lineage matters: it is designed around accessible controls, dramatic plays and compact matches rather than a full simulation’s long season-management commitment.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How its format works
Each run is a four-round, win-or-go-home tournament. Randomized rules change the conditions from one round to the next, so a team that succeeds under ordinary scoring may have to adapt when a special rule changes the value or timing of possessions. The structure naturally creates a complete session in roughly 12 to 15 minutes, according to the developer Q&A, instead of requiring a full league schedule.
- Teams: Three players per side.
- Launch roster: 32 playable NBA stars.
- Courts: 11 at launch.
- Modes: Four-round runs, AI matches and custom matches; private tournaments can include up to 48 players.
- Platforms at launch: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam.
- Cross-play: Supported across those launch platforms.
- Launch pricing reported by NBA.com: $29.99 for the standard edition and $39.99 for the Deluxe Edition.
The developer’s design description, “easy to learn, fun to master,” is a useful way to set expectations. You should be able to hand a controller to a newcomer without a tutorial-heavy evening, while experienced players still have reasons to learn the rules, spacing and timing of each run.
Who should choose it
Choose NBA The Run when your priority is current hardware, cross-platform competition or a repeatable short-session loop. It is particularly suitable for groups that cannot commit to a long match: a four-round tournament gives the night a clear beginning and end, and private tournaments support a larger group than a normal two-player couch game.
It is not the most direct replacement if you specifically want NBA Jam’s two-player, two-on-two setup. The move to 3-on-3 changes spacing and gives the game a busier feel. If you want every possession to revolve around one teammate and one opponent, look at the two-on-two choices below.

2. NBA 2K Playgrounds 2: the clearest licensed 2-on-2 substitute
NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 is the most obvious recommendation when the essential NBA Jam formula for you is two exaggerated players against two others, with real NBA names and a large selection of teams. Take-Two announced it as a two-on-two arcade basketball game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Windows PC.
What the launch package included
| Feature | Launch detail |
|---|---|
| Players | More than 300 at launch |
| Playgrounds | 10 |
| Moves | More than 100 signature moves |
| Modes | Season mode and ranked Championship mode |
| Multiplayer | Four-player online matches and co-op against AI |
| Release | October 16, 2018 |
| Launch list price | $29.99 |
Those are historical launch specifications, not a guarantee that every platform still has identical online functionality or marketplace stock. Check the store for your region and platform before buying, and treat the 2018 price as a launch-list figure rather than a current price.
Why it feels close to NBA Jam
The two-on-two structure leaves room for the same kind of immediate cooperation that makes NBA Jam work on a couch: one player can attack while the other cuts, screens or waits for a rebound. Signature moves and exaggerated dunks provide the spectacle, while the season and ranked modes give regular players a reason to keep practicing rather than treating every match as a one-off exhibition.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The roster is a major advantage if your group enjoys arguing over which real player has the best dunk, shot or special move. More than 300 launch players is a broad selection by arcade-game standards. The trade-off is that the game’s progression and move systems add more to learn than the very simplest arcade releases.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Best use cases
- Pick it for licensed NBA 2-on-2 play with a large roster.
- Pick it for online groups of four or for two players who want to cooperate against AI.
- Pick it if you want a season or ranked structure instead of only quick matches.
- Do not assume current online services, digital availability or physical stock; verify those details for your platform and region.
3. NBA Playgrounds: the easiest party-friendly option
NBA Playgrounds focuses on accessible 2-on-2 arcade action. The PlayStation listing describes it as “easy to play, challenging to master,” with offline and online multiplayer, current and retired NBA stars, all official NBA teams, global playgrounds, player collection and upgrades, and online tournaments. The listing gives a May 8, 2017 release date for PlayStation 4.
What makes it approachable
The format is immediately legible to anyone who has played an arcade basketball game: choose two players, take the court and look for open shots, steals and spectacular finishes. Because matches use two players per side, a second person can contribute without learning a complete five-player playbook. That makes it a strong choice for family play, a quick office break or a group that includes people who do not normally play sports simulations.
Its collection and upgrade systems give solo players a longer-term objective. You can build a roster from current and retired stars, improve players and enter online tournaments rather than simply replaying exhibition games. These systems add progression, but the basic appeal remains the short, readable 2-on-2 match.

4. Basketball Classics: retro 5-on-5 with real tactical depth
Basketball Classics takes the arcade idea in a different direction. It is a retro-styled 5-on-5 game from Namo Gamo and Acclaim, documented by Xbox Wire. Instead of compressing basketball into two or three players per side, it keeps a full team on the floor and uses a deliberately small control scheme: three buttons control the game.
Simple controls, deeper decisions
The three-button design lowers the mechanical barrier, but it does not make every possession identical. Xbox Wire highlights on-the-fly play-calling, eight player attributes, dunk decisions, Story Mode, roster editing and matchups based on player strengths. You can learn the controls quickly, then spend time deciding whether a particular possession calls for a set play, a safer shot or an aggressive attempt at the rim.
- Team size: 5-on-5.
- Control scheme: Three buttons.
- Strategic systems: Play-calling, eight attributes and matchup decisions.
- Content: More than 1,000 players across more than 175 teams, according to Xbox Wire.
- Progression: Story Mode unlocks.
- Customization: Roster editing.
- Multiplayer: Local multiplayer.
- Price reported by Xbox Wire: $9.99 at the time of publication.
Who will enjoy it
This is the pick for a reader who likes the look and immediacy of a retro game but wants more basketball structure than a dunk contest. Five-player lineups make substitutions, matchups and play-calling meaningful. Local multiplayer also makes it a strong choice for a shared screen, especially when online matchmaking is not a requirement.
It is not a direct mechanical clone of NBA Jam. A five-on-five game has more moving parts and less of the two-player spotlight. If your favorite NBA Jam memory is immediately throwing alley-oops with one friend, start with a two-on-two game instead.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
5. NBA Street: the historical streetball route
If what you remember most is not the NBA license but the attitude—trick moves, playground courts, exaggerated style and a culture built around humiliating the opponent—investigate the older NBA Street series. EA’s basketball catalog includes NBA Street Homecourt, NBA Street V3 and NBA Street Showdown. NBA.com’s developer Q&A for NBA The Run specifically identifies NBA Street Vol. 2 as a major influence and describes it as a balance between exaggerated arcade play and authentic basketball culture.
Which Street entry fits which memory?
- NBA Street Vol. 2: The historical recommendation when you want the series’ celebrated mix of streetball style and arcade exaggeration.
- NBA Street V3: A later entry for players interested in the series’ trick-heavy, culture-focused direction.
- NBA Street Homecourt: A more modern-feeling console entry in the catalog, built around street courts and showcase moves.
- NBA Street Showdown: A portable-oriented entry for collectors exploring the series across older hardware.
Because these are older games, platform access is the practical obstacle. Availability, resale prices, compatibility and multiplayer options vary by entry and region. They are best approached as historical or collection choices rather than guaranteed plug-and-play recommendations for a current console.
How to choose in five questions
- Do you need a current-generation release? Choose NBA The Run if you play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or Steam and want a current platform with cross-play.
- Is two-on-two non-negotiable? Choose NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 for the largest documented launch roster and the broadest set of competitive and cooperative modes, or NBA Playgrounds for a simpler presentation.
- Are you playing on one couch? Start with Basketball Classics if five-on-five tactics appeal to you; choose either NBA Playgrounds title if you want a lighter 2-on-2 party game.
- Do you want streetball tricks more than official NBA structure? Look for NBA Street Vol. 2 or another older NBA Street release, provided you can access the required hardware.
- How much strategy do you want? The Playgrounds games emphasize quick arcade action and player abilities; NBA The Run adds changing tournament rules; Basketball Classics adds full-team play-calling and attributes.
Arcade feel versus tactical depth
| Priority | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fastest modern sessions | NBA The Run | Four-round knockout runs take about 12–15 minutes and use randomized rules. |
| Most direct licensed 2-on-2 replacement | NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 | Two-on-two format, real NBA players, signature moves and more than 300 launch players. |
| Lowest learning curve for a group | NBA Playgrounds | Accessible 2-on-2 play with offline and online options. |
| Most on-court structure | Basketball Classics | Five-on-five lineups, play-calling, attributes and matchup decisions. |
| Strongest streetball identity | NBA Street Vol. 2 and related entries | Trick-heavy play and a street-court culture distinct from NBA simulation. |
Common pitfalls before you buy or install
Assuming every “NBA Jam-like” game is two-on-two
NBA The Run is 3-on-3 and Basketball Classics is 5-on-5. Confirm the team size before choosing, especially if your group has practiced a particular two-player setup.
Confusing launch specifications with current service status
The documented player counts, playground counts, prices and platform lists for NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 are launch details from 2018. Online services, digital listings and physical stock can change. Check the current store page and the publisher’s service information for your region.
Buying an older Street game without checking hardware
NBA Street recommendations point to older platforms. Verify console compatibility, disc condition, region and whether the multiplayer mode you want still works on your setup.
Expecting full simulation depth from an arcade game
Arcade basketball prioritizes readable controls and spectacular outcomes. If you want every NBA rule, realistic fatigue and detailed franchise management, these games are intentionally not that experience. Within this list, Basketball Classics supplies the most tactical structure, but it remains a retro arcade title.
Final recommendation
Start with NBA The Run for the best current-generation answer: it combines 3-on-3 arcade play, randomized knockout rounds, cross-play and short sessions. Choose NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 when the defining requirement is licensed 2-on-2 action with a large roster and ranked or season modes. Pick NBA Playgrounds for uncomplicated party play, Basketball Classics for local 5-on-5 strategy, and NBA Street when the streetball identity matters more than modern platform convenience.
