For most Canadian wildlife sightings, start with iNaturalist Canada. It covers plants, animals and fungi, supports a bilingual interface, and turns a photograph or sound recording into a shareable observation that the community can review. Choose Seek by iNaturalist when you want quick, camera-first learning without an account; Merlin Bird ID when you need to identify a bird by its call or photograph; and NatureCounts when you are collecting observations for a formal survey, atlas or conservation project.
The important distinction is between identifying an organism and reporting a defensible record. An app’s automated suggestion is a starting point, not proof. Your location, date, media and notes determine whether another person can check the sighting and whether it can support Canadian biodiversity research.
Which wildlife app should you use?
| What you need | Best fit | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Identify many kinds of Canadian wildlife and publish a public record | iNaturalist Canada | Broad taxonomic coverage, photos and sounds, community identification and a path from a casual observation to a Research Grade record. |
| Point a phone at an organism for a fast, low-pressure identification | Seek by iNaturalist | Camera-first exploration, local organism lists, badges and use without registration. |
| Identify a bird from its song or a photograph | Merlin Bird ID | Sound ID, Photo ID, saved identifications and offline bird packages. |
| Submit standardized data to an atlas, monitoring program or other project | NatureCounts | Direct field submission, customizable protocols, project data access and synchronization with eBird. |
These recommendations are about purpose, not a single ranking. Seek is optimized for learning, Merlin for bird identification, iNaturalist for broad community-reviewed records, and NatureCounts for protocol-driven monitoring.

What an iNaturalist observation contains
In iNaturalist’s terminology, an observation is an encounter with an organism at a particular time and location. The record can include photographs, sounds, text and tags. That definition matters: a downloaded image, an old photograph with no date, or a general statement such as “a fox lives near my house” is not equivalent to a documented encounter.
When you submit, the system may suggest a taxon automatically. Treat that suggestion as a hypothesis. Other community members can agree, disagree or refine it. A machine-generated label by itself is not a verified wildlife record.
How an observation reaches Research Grade
iNaturalist starts observations as Casual. An observation can become Research Grade when all of the following are satisfied:
- It has a date.
- It has a georeference.
- It includes a photograph or sound.
- The organism represents a wild individual rather than a captive, cultivated or otherwise non-wild example.
- The community reaches agreement on an identification.
Research Grade is a community-agreement status, not a guarantee that every identification is perfect. Clear media, an accurate date and a useful location make agreement more likely and give later reviewers something they can evaluate.
When iNaturalist is the right reporting destination
- You want one public record for an insect, mammal, reptile, amphibian, plant, fungus or other organism.
- You want people with local expertise to check an uncertain identification.
- You can provide at least one usable image or sound and a reasonably accurate date and place.
- You want your record to remain discoverable outside a single private project.
Seek by iNaturalist: fast identification without an account
Seek is designed for casual, camera-first exploration. Point the camera at a living thing and the app can suggest wildlife, plants and fungi. It also shows lists of commonly recorded organisms in your area and awards badges, which can make repeated outdoor observation engaging for families and beginners.
Seek can be used without registration. Its official description emphasizes kid-safe use, no data collection by default and obscured location. Location is obscured for local suggestions, and precise location is not stored unless a user signs in and submits observations.

What Seek is good at
- Getting a quick, on-device-style identification experience while you are outside.
- Helping children learn the difference between broad groups and individual species.
- Exploring common organisms in a region without creating an account.
- Keeping a learning session separate from a public conservation record.
What Seek does not replace
Seek’s privacy-first defaults and no-registration workflow are useful precisely because they reduce the pressure to publish. They also mean that a sighting you merely identify in Seek is not automatically a public biodiversity record. If you want conservationists or other observers to find and evaluate the record, submit it through iNaturalist or the relevant project platform after checking the identification, date, location and media.
Do not present a Seek result as a confirmed species determination. Use it as a lead, photograph the organism clearly, and move the observation to a reporting platform when the record matters.
Merlin Bird ID: the bird sound and photo specialist
For birds, Merlin Bird ID is the most focused identification aid in this group. Its official help center lists Sound ID, Photo ID, the ability to save birds identified with Merlin and offline bird packages.
Use Merlin when sound is the key clue
A bird that stays hidden may still be identifiable from its song or call. Sound ID is useful when foliage, distance or low light prevents a photograph. Record as much of the call as possible, include surrounding context in your notes, and treat the result as a candidate until you have checked the bird’s range, habitat and behavior.
Use Merlin when you have a photograph
Photo ID is appropriate when the bird is visible but you are unsure of its species. A side view showing the bill, wing pattern, tail and body size is generally more informative than a distant silhouette. Avoid cropping away features that could distinguish similar species.
Merlin versus eBird or iNaturalist
Merlin is primarily an identification aid. If you want to report the encounter as a citizen-science record, use a reporting platform such as eBird or iNaturalist when appropriate. This division keeps the workflow clear: Merlin helps answer “what bird might this be?”, while the reporting platform stores the observation and its supporting details.
Offline bird packages are important for field trips with weak or no connectivity. Install the relevant package before leaving service, and do not assume that an identification made offline has already been submitted anywhere.

NatureCounts: for organized monitoring and project protocols
NatureCounts is the choice for people working within a defined survey, breeding-bird atlas, monitoring program or other project that needs standardized data. Birds Canada describes it as a mobile tool for birds and biodiversity with direct field submission, customizable protocols, project data access and eBird synchronization.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

| Reported measure | Value | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Records submitted | 2 million | Birds Canada figure; year not stated. |
| Projects supported | 45 | Birds Canada figure; year not stated. |
| Customized protocols created | 75 | Birds Canada figure; year not stated. |
| Checklists submitted | 140,000 | Birds Canada figure; year not stated. |
| Data-entry time saved | 12,000 hours | Birds Canada figure; year not stated. |
Why protocols change the app choice
A casual sighting and a standardized survey answer different questions. A casual record may ask, “Was this species present here?” A protocol may also require a fixed route, duration, observer effort, count method, habitat code or repeat schedule. NatureCounts is built to collect data tailored to a project while still allowing sightings to contribute to eBird.
Before using NatureCounts, confirm which project you are joining and which protocol it requires. Submitting a checklist under the wrong project or with missing effort information can make the record difficult to use, even if the species identification is correct.
How to identify an animal from a photo
- Photograph the whole organism. Keep enough of the surroundings to show scale and habitat, but make the subject large enough to inspect.
- Capture diagnostic details. Take additional images of the head, markings, leaves, tracks or other features that separate similar species.
- Record the encounter details immediately. Note the date, approximate time, location, behavior and whether the organism was wild, captive, planted or dead.
- Run the image through the appropriate app. Use iNaturalist or Seek for broad wildlife; use Merlin Photo ID for birds.
- Check the suggestion against the scene. Compare range, habitat, size, season and visible features. A visually plausible suggestion can still be geographically impossible.
- Submit the media and metadata. Choose iNaturalist for a broad public record or the assigned NatureCounts project for a protocol-based survey.
Photographing an animal should never take priority over its welfare. Keep a safe distance, do not handle wildlife to obtain a better image and avoid revealing a sensitive location when disclosure could put an animal or nesting site at risk.
How to identify a bird by sound
- Move away from competing noise. Traffic, wind and nearby conversations can obscure the call.
- Record a complete phrase. A few seconds may be enough for a distinctive call, but a longer recording gives the tool more context.
- Use Merlin Sound ID. Let the app propose candidates rather than treating the first result as final.
- Listen and look for confirmation. Check whether the rhythm, pitch, habitat, season and visible behavior fit the suggested bird.
- Save the identification and report it separately. Use eBird or iNaturalist when you want a public observation, or NatureCounts when the sighting belongs to a project protocol.
Sound-based records deserve especially careful review because several species can share call types and a recording can contain more than one bird.
How to report a wildlife sighting for citizen science
The platform you choose determines what happens after identification. Use this workflow for a record that other people should be able to evaluate.

- Choose the reporting destination before you leave. Pick iNaturalist for broad wildlife, eBird for a birding checklist, or NatureCounts for an assigned project. Merlin and Seek can assist with identification but do not replace that decision.
- Collect evidence in the field. Save original photographs or sounds, not only a cropped screenshot of an app result.
- Capture the date and place. A precise point is useful for scientific analysis, but use a privacy setting or generalized location where a public coordinate could expose a sensitive species or your home.
- Describe what you actually observed. Record behavior, habitat, number of individuals and any uncertainty. Do not turn an app suggestion into a fact in your notes.
- Submit the record. Include the media, date, georeference and identification offered by the platform. For NatureCounts, follow the project’s required protocol fields.
- Review feedback. On iNaturalist, community members may confirm or revise the identification. Revisit the record if someone asks for a better photograph or points out a conflicting feature.
- Keep a private copy. Preserve the original media and field notes in case the platform changes, a project closes or you later need to correct the record.
Reporting is strongest when another observer could understand exactly what happened without having to guess the date, location, species or evidence.
Privacy and location choices
Wildlife records can reveal more than a species name. A precise coordinate may identify a nest, den, roost, rare plant or the location of a person’s home. Decide what level of location is appropriate before publishing.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSeek’s default approach
Seek obscures location for local suggestions and does not store precise location by default. Precise location is stored only when a user signs in and submits observations. This makes it suitable for children and for exploratory sessions where publishing is not the goal.
When a public record needs less precision
- Use a generalized location for a sensitive species or nesting site.
- Do not publish a private address merely because it is the easiest map point.
- Ask a project coordinator whether exact coordinates are required before submitting.
- Keep precise coordinates in your private field notes if the public record should be obscured.
Privacy settings can protect people and wildlife, but they also reduce the geographic detail available for research. Choose the least precise setting that still satisfies the purpose of the record.
Identification quality: what makes a record useful?
A useful record is more than a species label. Review these elements before submitting:
- Evidence: at least one clear photograph or sound, with extra views for look-alike species.
- Time: the actual encounter date, not the date you remembered to upload it.
- Place: a georeference that reflects where the organism was observed.
- Wild status: state whether the organism was wild; cultivated, captive or escaped examples may need different treatment.
- Context: habitat, behavior, count and notable conditions.
- Uncertainty: say when the identification is tentative.
On iNaturalist, these details correspond to the conditions that allow a Casual observation to become Research Grade after community agreement. On NatureCounts, the project’s protocol may impose additional requirements. On eBird, checklist completeness and effort information can be as important as the name of an individual bird.

Choosing between Merlin and eBird
Merlin and eBird are complementary rather than interchangeable. Merlin supplies identification features for birds, including sound and photo tools and offline packages. eBird is a reporting destination for bird observations and checklists. If you already know the bird, you may not need Merlin; if you do not know it, Merlin can help before you submit the checklist.
For a single unusual bird that needs broad community identification, iNaturalist can also be appropriate. For a structured monitoring project, use NatureCounts and follow its protocol, even if Merlin helped identify the bird.
Common failure modes and fixes
The app suggests a species that cannot live there
Check geographic range, habitat and season before accepting the result. Submit at a higher taxonomic level when the evidence does not distinguish the species, and add photographs that show the relevant features.
The recording has no useful location
Write down a landmark, trail, park sector or approximate coordinates while still in the field. If exact public coordinates are unsafe, retain them privately and publish a generalized location.
The record is stuck as Casual
Check for a missing date, georeference, photograph or sound, and confirm that the organism was wild. A record also needs community agreement; uploading evidence does not force Research Grade status.
You identified a bird offline but cannot find a submitted record
Merlin’s offline package supports identification without connectivity. Save the result and submit it later through eBird, iNaturalist or the relevant NatureCounts project when you are back online.
A project form asks for information you did not collect
Do not invent effort, counts or habitat details. Mark the field unknown if the project permits it, contact the coordinator, or submit the observation to a general platform instead of misrepresenting a standardized survey.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A practical field checklist
- Phone charged and enough storage for original photographs or recordings.
- Offline bird package installed if Merlin will be used without service.
- Chosen reporting destination identified before the outing.
- Date, time and location ready to record.
- One wide context image plus close-up diagnostic images where safe.
- Notes on behavior, habitat, number of individuals and wild status.
- Privacy decision made for sensitive locations.
- Original media retained after upload.
For a single backyard insect, iNaturalist Canada is usually the most useful balance of identification breadth and public reporting. For a child pointing a phone at leaves and insects, Seek minimizes friction. For an unseen warbler calling from a forest, Merlin is the practical first step. For a scheduled atlas route or monitoring project, NatureCounts is the correct destination because the protocol—not just the species name—makes the data usable.
