Freedom is the best starting point for most multi-device households. It covers Mac, Windows, Android, iOS and Chrome, and can synchronize sessions that block both websites and applications. Choose Cold Turkey instead when you primarily use Windows or macOS and want the highest-friction locks. FocusMe is the specialist desktop option for browser-independent blocking, Linux support and detailed schedules. AppBlock suits phone-first blocking on Android and iOS, while Opal is particularly well matched to iPhone routines, reports and Deep Focus.
The right blocker depends less on the size of its block list than on five practical questions: which devices it supports, what it can block, how difficult it is to bypass, whether schedules fit your day, and whether its pricing and data practices suit you.
How to choose an app and website blocker
Start with operating-system coverage. A blocker that works only on your laptop will not stop you from switching to a phone, and a phone-only tool cannot enforce a desktop work session. Finally, distinguish a free tier from a permanently free product. Limits on the number of schedules, blocked items or Strict Mode duration can change whether a tool works for your routine. Prices, platform support and privacy terms change, so check each vendor’s current policy and store listing before paying.

Best overall for multiple devices: Freedom
Freedom is the broadest option in this group when your household mixes computers and phones. Its product page lists Mac, Windows, Android, iOS and Chrome support, and its sessions can block websites and desktop or mobile applications at the same time. Synchronisation means a session started for a work period can apply across the devices you select instead of relying on separate timers.
What it does well
- Cross-platform coverage reduces the easiest bypass: moving from a computer to a phone.
- Website exceptions let you keep necessary services available while blocking broader distractions.
- Focus sounds and Pomodoro-style sessions provide structure for people who prefer guided intervals.
- The homepage lists a $39.99 annual Premium plan. Treat that as the displayed annual price, not a guarantee of the current checkout total.
Important qualifications
Freedom’s site says more than 3,000,000 people use the service and reports an average of 2.5 productive hours gained. Those are company claims, not independent outcome studies, so they should not be used as proof that a particular user will achieve the same result. The vendor says, “Every feature exists to reduce distractions and support real focus, not to keep you coming back to the app.” That describes its design goal, not a measured clinical effect.

Cold Turkey is the strongest fit when you use Windows or macOS and are willing to trade mobile coverage for stricter desktop controls. Its documentation covers website domains, URL patterns, search keywords, applications, folders and device blocks, so you can target a single site, a class of searches, a program or nearly all computer use.
Enforcement controls
A locked block can prevent you from disabling the browser extension or uninstalling the application. You can require a timer, password or randomized text before a block unlocks. This matters because ordinary browser extensions are easy to pause when motivation drops. Cold Turkey’s documentation describes the locked-block behavior directly; the practical result is a higher-friction escape route rather than an absolute guarantee against every technical workaround.

The pricing page states that Windows and macOS are supported, while Linux, ChromeOS, Android and iOS are not. If you need a phone block synchronized with your computer, select a different product or pair Cold Turkey with the platform’s own controls.
When Cold Turkey is the wrong choice
- Your main distraction is on Android or iPhone.
- You need one session to span several operating systems.
- You depend on Linux or ChromeOS.
Best desktop specialist for Linux and browser-independent blocking: FocusMe
FocusMe describes itself as a desktop focus app that blocks websites across all browsers without requiring an extension. That architecture is useful when you regularly switch between Chrome, Firefox, Edge or another browser, because the restriction is not tied to one add-on. It supports Windows, Mac and Linux.
Granular targets and schedules
FocusMe can target websites, applications and games. License scope
The FAQ says one license can cover up to five desktop computers and two mobile devices. That is a device allowance, not evidence that every mobile feature matches the desktop experience; confirm the current terms and supported operating systems before relying on it for a phone-first setup.
Best mobile-first option: AppBlock
AppBlock is designed for people whose distraction problem follows them on a phone. Its official pages list Android, iOS and browser extensions and describe controls for apps, websites, specific URLs, keywords and selected distracting features inside apps.

Free tier versus Premium
Premium adds unlimited schedules, usage limits, allowlist mode, Strict Mode and other controls. Free tiers cap the number of schedules, blocked items or the duration of Strict Mode. Those caps may be adequate for a single bedtime or work block, but they become restrictive when you need separate weekday, weekend and study plans.
Using Strict Mode effectively
Strict Mode is intended for the moment when an ordinary schedule is too easy to override. Configure your block list and test the normal escape path before starting a long session. Keep essential calling, messaging, maps and authentication tools available through an allowlist where appropriate; an overly broad mobile lock can create a safety or work problem that encourages you to disable the blocker entirely.
Best for iPhone routines and reports: Opal
Opal’s cited App Store listing describes scheduled app and website blocks, daily usage limits, Deep Focus, work and sleep routines, focus reports, a focus score, reminders, iPhone Focus Mode integration and shortcut automations. These features make it a good fit when you want a repeatable routine and feedback about how consistently you follow it, rather than only a manual emergency block.
The cited listing is for Apple devices. Do not assume Android support without checking a separate current listing or product statement. The available evidence also does not establish a price, so verify the subscription or purchase terms in your region before committing.
Which blocker is hardest to bypass?
No consumer blocker can promise an unbreakable barrier to a determined administrator, a second device or a factory reset. “Hard to bypass” should therefore mean that the ordinary, impulsive escape routes are deliberately inconvenient.

- Choose an enforcement feature. Cold Turkey’s locked blocks can prevent disabling the extension or uninstalling the app, and can require a timer, password or randomized text. AppBlock’s Strict Mode adds a stronger mobile lock than a normal schedule.
- Block the route you actually use. If you switch from a browser to a native application, block both. If you use search to reach distracting pages, include search keywords where supported.
- Use a long enough delay. A short timer may stop a reflexive click but still allow repeated retries. Match the lock to the planned work interval.
- Keep an emergency path. Allow essential communication, accessibility and authentication tools. A lock that prevents legitimate use will be disabled, defeating the purpose.

How to set up a blocker that works on a schedule
- List the failure points. Write down the exact domains, URLs, apps, games, search terms and in-app features you open when you intend to work or sleep.
- Pick the smallest useful target. Block a distracting feature or site first instead of removing an entire service you need for legitimate tasks.
- Create recurring windows. Add weekday work or study hours, a separate evening routine and any weekend exceptions. Products vary in whether recurring schedules are free or Premium.
- Set breaks and allowances. Cold Turkey supports breaks and allowances; other products may call the same concept usage limits or session pauses. Decide in advance how much flexibility you actually need.
- Add an allowlist. Keep essential work, school, health, transport, banking and communication services reachable.
- Test before locking. Start a short session and try each normal bypass: another browser, a direct URL, the native app, a search result and a device switch.
- Escalate enforcement. Turn on a locked block or Strict Mode only after the target list is accurate. Strong enforcement cannot compensate for a badly configured list.
- Review reports weekly. Opal provides focus reports and a focus score; Freedom and Cold Turkey document statistics. Use the data to adjust schedules, not to create another source of notifications.
Free options and what “free” really means
Cold Turkey’s free edition includes website blocks, exceptions, timed blocks and statistics, making it the clearest documented no-cost starting point for desktop website control. AppBlock also has free tiers, but limits can apply to schedules, blocked items or Strict Mode duration. Freedom’s cited homepage lists an annual Premium plan, while the supplied product notes do not establish a permanent free tier. Opal’s cited listing does not establish pricing.
A free tier is useful for testing whether a block list and schedule match your behavior. Before you depend on it, check the exact limits for your operating system, whether synchronized sessions require payment and whether anti-uninstall or Strict Mode is paywalled.
Privacy and data-handling checks
Blocking software may need extensive permissions: device-usage access on mobile, system controls on desktop, browser access, notifications and sometimes accessibility services. Those permissions can reveal which apps or sites you use. Read the current privacy policy and app-store disclosures for each product before purchase.
- Check what usage data is collected, how long it is retained and whether it is associated with an account.
- Find out whether synchronized sessions require cloud storage and which devices share activity data.
- Review deletion, export and account-closure procedures.
- On shared or family devices, make sure every user understands what reports or restrictions an administrator can see.
Common setup problems and fixes
A blocked site still opens
Confirm that the exact domain, URL pattern or search term is included, then test another browser and the native app. A DNS-level or browser extension rule may not cover an installed application. Use a product with broader target types, such as Cold Turkey or AppBlock, when the same service is available through multiple routes.

The schedule blocks too much
Shorten the session, add breaks or allowances, and move essential services to an allowlist. FocusMe and Cold Turkey document scheduling features; AppBlock and Opal provide usage-limit or routine controls suited to mobile plans.
You can simply turn the blocker off
Enable Cold Turkey’s locked block or AppBlock’s Strict Mode where supported. On a multi-device setup, use synchronized sessions so changing devices does not end the plan. Remember that administrative access, a second device or a reset can still defeat consumer software.
A phone is unaffected by a desktop block
Use a cross-platform tool such as Freedom, or configure a mobile-first product separately. Cold Turkey’s documented support is Windows and macOS, so it is not a phone solution.
