Choose Nova Launcher for the deepest conventional Android controls, Niagara Launcher for a compact one-handed layout, Lawnchair for a free Pixel-style experience, or Microsoft Launcher if your phone is part of a Windows or Microsoft 365 workflow. The launcher supplies the layout framework; the widget app still controls its own sizes, refresh behavior and interactions.

What makes a launcher good for customizable widgets?
Widget customization has several separate parts. A launcher can change the canvas, but it cannot rewrite a clock, weather, calendar or KWGT widget. Evaluate these items independently:

- Placement granularity: Can a widget sit between the normal grid lines, or must it occupy whole cells? Fluid or fine-grained positioning matters when aligning several widgets.
- Resize range: The launcher may expose resize handles, but the widget author determines the minimum and maximum dimensions and whether the content reflows.
- Page and orientation behavior: A useful arrangement on a tall portrait phone may be unusable in landscape, on a tablet or on a foldable. Screen-specific layouts prevent one compromise from being applied everywhere.
- Stacks and overlays: A stack lets several widgets share one region and be swiped or tapped through. A launcher can provide the stack container, but each participating widget still has to support normal Android widget hosting.
- Visual system: Icon packs, colors, transparency, dock rules and theme controls determine whether a carefully arranged widget page looks coherent.
- Reliability and recovery: A backup should preserve the launcher arrangement. Third-party widget settings, especially KWGT presets, normally require their own export or cloud backup.
For a layout built around exact alignment, start with Smart Launcher 6. For a familiar multi-page grid with extensive home-screen controls, Nova remains the more conventional choice.
Smart Launcher 6: best for exact widget placement

Nova Launcher: the traditional power-user option
Nova replaces the default home screen with a conventional Android desktop and adds unusually deep controls. Its official site describes it as providing “powerful features that you will soon realize you can’t live without.” Nova also claims to be “the premier custom launcher for Android, loved by over 50 million”; that figure is a vendor claim, not an independent adoption study.
Where Nova excels
Nova’s model suits people who want multiple pages, a configurable dock and predictable folders. The official feature list covers the desktop, app drawer, dock, folders, icon themes, backup and restore, gestures, notification badges and drawer folders. You can therefore tune the surrounding home-screen system as carefully as the widget page itself.

For widget work, Nova is especially comfortable when you already understand Android’s normal grid. Place a widget, use its resize handles, adjust the desktop grid, and reserve neighboring cells for icons or shortcuts. It is less focused than Smart Launcher on free-form composition, but it offers a familiar structure that many power users can reproduce across devices.
Free versus Prime
Nova is free to install. Prime adds extra capabilities and an ad-free experience through either a subscription or a lifetime purchase. The exact offer can change, so confirm the current options in the store or Nova’s purchase screen rather than treating an old price as permanent.
Who should choose it
Choose Nova when you want detailed control over the whole home screen, not only widgets; when you rely on gestures, drawer folders or icon themes; or when a mature backup-and-restore workflow is more important than a fluid canvas. It is also the most natural alternative for someone moving from another conventional grid launcher.
Niagara Launcher: minimal and one-handed
Niagara takes a different approach from both Smart Launcher and Nova. Instead of presenting a conventional grid filled with icons, it keeps an alphabetical app list and surfaces notifications on the home screen. The result is a narrow, focused workspace that can be operated with one hand.
How widgets fit
Niagara works best when you want a few important widgets visible rather than a dashboard packed with panels. A clock, agenda, music control or weather widget can sit alongside the app list without forcing you to maintain several pages. The launcher’s premium tier has included widget stacks and other entitlements, but those benefits can change; check the current Pro listing before making stacks central to your design.

- You give up the familiar matrix of icons and the visual freedom of a large multi-page grid.
- The alphabetical list and notification presentation reduce searching and reach distance, but they may feel restrictive if you arrange dozens of shortcuts manually.
- Widget placement is best treated as a compact information strip rather than a free-form collage.
Niagara is the right choice when reducing clutter and thumb travel matters more than exact pixel-like placement.

Lawnchair: a free, open-source Pixel-style choice
Lawnchair is a free, open-source launcher aimed at reproducing and extending the Pixel home-screen experience. Android Authority documents adaptive icons, drawer categories, an “At a Glance” feature, light and dark modes and Google Discover integration.
Widget layout experience
Lawnchair uses the familiar Android grid, so standard widgets behave as they do on a Pixel-style desktop: add the widget, place it on a page and resize it within the limits exposed by the widget app. It is a good fit for someone who wants a clean baseline before adding a few custom panels, rather than a specialized canvas for overlapping or highly irregular arrangements.
Why people choose it
- Pixel familiarity: The visual language and placement model are easy to understand if you have used a Pixel phone.
- Open-source and free: There is no paid tier required for the core launcher experience.

Community launcher development can move quickly. Confirm the current release and compatibility with your Android version, manufacturer skin and preferred widgets before migrating a production layout.

Microsoft’s support documentation says, “Microsoft Launcher provides a new home screen experience that empowers you to be more productive across all your devices.” That positioning is reflected in its feed and work-profile features.
Productivity-oriented layout
Microsoft Launcher can import an existing layout, which reduces the cost of switching from the default launcher. Its customizable feed can show a calendar, to-do lists and Sticky Notes, while a work widget and work-profile separation help keep business information distinct from personal apps. It also supports custom icon packs, allowing a widget page to match the rest of the home screen.
Requirements and default-app behavior
Microsoft documents Android 7.0 and later support. After you select it as the home app, it replaces the default launcher for the Home action; the exact settings label varies by phone. On most devices the path is Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home app, followed by Microsoft Launcher.
When it is the best fit
Pick Microsoft Launcher when your widget layout is part of a cross-device workflow involving Outlook-style calendar information, Microsoft to-do lists, Sticky Notes or a managed work profile. If your only requirement is free-form widget placement, Smart Launcher 6 is more directly focused on that problem.

Other launchers worth considering
AIO Launcher
AIO favors information density over a decorative grid. It can put a large amount of status information on one screen, while widget support is unlocked through in-app purchases. Consider it when seeing many data points at once is more valuable than arranging widgets with generous spacing.

Hyperion
Hyperion offers extensive controls for themes, folders, transparency, animations, icons and gestures. It is a strong secondary option for visual tinkerers who want to tune the entire interface, although the documented comparison does not place it ahead of Smart Launcher for precise widget composition.
Action Launcher
Action Launcher combines widgets with covers, shutters, adaptive theming and a Pixel-style interface. Covers and shutters can expose app content from an icon, making it useful when you want shortcuts to behave like compact panels.
Square Home
Square Home uses a tile-oriented layout, supports widgets and is designed to work on tablets and foldables. Its tile model is worth considering when your device has a large or changing screen and a conventional phone grid does not use the available space well.

Can you stack widgets on Android?
Yes, but “stacking” can mean two different things. Android supports hosting multiple widgets, while a launcher may add a stack container that lets you swipe between them in one footprint. The stack feature therefore depends on the launcher and, in some cases, its paid plan. Smart Launcher 6 documents widget stacks; Niagara has offered stacks as part of premium entitlements, which should be verified against its current plan.
How to create a stack when the launcher supports it
- Long-press an empty area of the home screen and choose the launcher’s widget or stack command.
- Select the first widget and place it in the target region.
- Use the stack editor or an “add widget” action to add compatible widgets to that same region.
- Resize the stack after all members are present, then swipe through it to check touch targets and refresh behavior.
If no stack command appears, the launcher may not provide stacks, the feature may require a paid entitlement, or the current release may have moved it to a different editor. Adding two widgets in the same grid cells is not a reliable substitute; most launchers will move one of them.
How KWGT changes the decision
KWGT is a widget-building app, not a launcher. It determines the widget’s internal design, controls, refresh behavior and the sizes that its preset can use. The launcher determines where that KWGT widget sits and how much external space it receives.

For the most reliable custom layouts
- Use a launcher with a grid and resize model that matches the preset’s intended aspect ratio.
- Keep the KWGT preset and any required fonts, images or global settings together when backing up.
- Test the widget after changing orientation or display size; Android may recalculate the available cells.
- Check battery-optimization and notification permissions if a live clock, weather value or music control stops updating.
The researched guidance specifically recommends backing up both the launcher arrangement and the KWGT configuration, using KWGT and KWGT Pro where appropriate. A launcher backup by itself may restore an empty widget frame without restoring the third-party design inside it.
Switching launchers without losing your layout
Use this sequence before committing to a new home screen:
- Record the platform: Open Settings > About phone and note the Android version. Record the manufacturer skin as well, such as Samsung’s One UI or another vendor interface, because gesture handling, permissions and widget behavior vary.
- List dependencies: Write down every widget app, icon pack, theme, gesture and work-profile feature your current layout uses. Mark each desired feature as stable, beta-only or paid after checking the launcher’s current listing.
- Capture the current layout: Take screenshots in portrait and landscape, including every page, folder and dock. Screenshots are a visual reference even when an import tool exists.
- Back up the launcher: Use the launcher’s own backup or export command. Nova documents backup and restore; other launchers may use a different location or format.
- Back up widget data separately: Export KWGT presets and save associated assets. Repeat this for any widget app that has its own account or export function.
- Install and set the home app: In the phone’s default-app settings, choose the new launcher as Home. Android and manufacturer labels differ, but the setting is normally under Settings > Apps > Default apps.
- Recreate one page first: Add the most important widgets, test resizing, then verify taps, scrolling, notifications and refresh intervals before rebuilding every page.
- Test each form factor: Rotate the phone, change display size only if necessary, and open the layout on any tablet or foldable where you intend to use it.
- Keep the old backup: Do not uninstall the previous launcher or delete its export until the new arrangement survives a restart and you have confirmed that all widget data is present.
Troubleshooting widget layouts
The resize handles are missing
Long-press the widget and look for a resize action. If it is absent, the widget may have a fixed size, the launcher may disable resizing for that type, or the home screen may not have enough free cells. Try a larger grid or another widget variant before assuming the launcher is broken.
The widget will not become as small or large as expected
The widget app sets minimum and maximum dimensions. A launcher cannot force a calendar or weather widget to reflow beyond those limits. Choose a different widget variant, adjust the launcher grid, or build a custom version in KWGT.
A stack option is unavailable
Check whether your launcher supports stacks in the installed release and whether the feature is tied to a Pro or premium entitlement. Niagara’s plan and Smart Launcher’s release channel are examples where availability can change.
A restored page shows blank widget frames
Restore or reinstall the widget app first, then import its own preset or account data. Recreate permissions for notifications, location or calendars, and review battery restrictions. The launcher export generally records the frame and position, not the private configuration held by another app.
The layout shifts after rotation
Some launchers use one arrangement for every orientation; others can store screen-specific layouts. If portrait and landscape are both important, use a launcher that documents separate arrangements, then test both before adding fine alignment.
Gestures or the Home button return to the old launcher
Reopen the phone’s Default apps > Home app setting and select the intended launcher. Manufacturer gesture settings may also have a separate “default home app” entry. Reboot once after changing the selection if the system continues to open the previous home screen.
Which launcher should you choose?
- Choose Smart Launcher 6 if exact placement, fluid grids, stacks and different phone orientations are the central requirement.
- Choose Nova Launcher if you want the broadest conventional controls for pages, dock, folders, gestures, icon themes and backups.
- Choose Niagara Launcher if you prefer a one-handed, notification-first home screen with only a few visible widgets.
- Choose Lawnchair if you want a free, open-source Pixel-like experience with adaptive icons and Discover integration.
- Choose Microsoft Launcher if your useful information lives in Microsoft calendar, to-do, Sticky Notes or a managed work profile.
