For most ZimaOS owners, test PhotoPrism, Immich and LibrePhotos in that order of fit: PhotoPrism is the safest starting point because it is published in the ZimaOS App Store with documented ZimaBoard, ZimaBlade and ZimaCube deployment guidance; Immich is the strongest first test when automatic phone backup and a Google Photos-like mobile workflow matter most; LibrePhotos is the best match for local, open-source operation with face, place, event and broad media-format support.
None is a perfect feature-for-feature Google Photos clone. Your choice depends on whether you value a documented ZimaOS installation, frictionless phone uploads, or maximum local ownership and format coverage. Self-hosting also means you—not a cloud provider—must provide storage redundancy, backups, secure remote access, upgrades and database maintenance.
Which private Google Photos alternative fits a ZimaOS server?
| Priority | Best first test | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Documented ZimaOS deployment | PhotoPrism | It is available in the ZimaOS App Store for ZimaBoard, ZimaBlade and ZimaCube, with published storage, port and database guidance. |
| Automatic phone backup and a mobile-first workflow | Immich | Its practical differentiator is a phone-first backup and library experience designed around uploads from mobile devices. |
| Open-source local ownership and format breadth | LibrePhotos | It scans folders on your server, keeps photos and metadata local, and documents support for photos, video, RAW, HEIC, Live Photos and x265 video. |
| Large or growing library | PhotoPrism with a suitable database, or a carefully sized Immich deployment | PhotoPrism warns that its default SQLite index is not a good choice for scalability and high performance; Immich’s requirements and release behavior change quickly and should be checked before deployment. |
Use the table as a shortlist, not a guarantee. Face-recognition accuracy, search relevance, sharing behavior, album migration and mobile reliability vary with your hardware and your own library. A representative test import is more informative than a feature checklist.

What replacing ZimaOS Photos actually involves
A private replacement normally has four layers: the original image and video files, an index or database, browser and mobile clients, and a secure way to reach the service away from home. The applications organize and search your files; they do not remove the need for a durable storage and backup plan.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the original library in a folder that the application can read. Treat the application’s index as rebuildable, but treat originals, edited derivatives and important metadata as irreplaceable. If you move or rename files outside the application, its index may need to rescan. Decide in advance whether the app should have read-only access to an existing archive or permission to create albums, thumbnails and other generated files.
Running a replacement beside the existing ZimaOS photo service is a sensible transition. It lets you test search and mobile upload without making the first import your only copy. Once the new library passes your checks, you can choose which service becomes the daily interface.
PhotoPrism: the clearest ZimaOS starting point
Why choose PhotoPrism
PhotoPrism describes itself as an AI-powered, privacy-first application for browsing, organizing and sharing photos and videos. Its search combines filters for labels, location, resolution, color, chroma and quality, which is useful when a folder hierarchy no longer reflects how you remember a picture.
It also documents a Google Photos migration path and recommends Docker Compose for private-server hosting. For ZimaOS users, the important practical advantage is that PhotoPrism is already published in the ZimaOS App Store for ZimaBoard, ZimaBlade and ZimaCube rather than requiring an undocumented community package.
ZimaOS requirements and database choice
The official ZimaOS guidance recommends a 64-bit system with at least two CPU cores and 3 GB of RAM for a good experience. Those are a baseline, not a promise of a particular indexing speed; larger libraries, concurrent users and video processing require more headroom.
The ZimaOS package stores the index in SQLite by default. PhotoPrism warns that SQLite is not a good choice when you need scalability and high performance, and recommends considering MariaDB for larger libraries. Select the database before a major import, place database files on reliable storage, and include the database in your backup plan. A database backup without the originals is useless, and originals without a current index may require a long re-index.

A careful PhotoPrism deployment sequence
- Confirm the host. Verify that your ZimaOS device is 64-bit, has at least two cores and has 3 GB of RAM available for the application and the rest of your services.
- Install from the ZimaOS App Store. Select PhotoPrism and review the package’s volume mappings, exposed port and database settings before starting it.
- Map a stable originals folder. Point PhotoPrism at the folder containing your photos and videos. Avoid mapping temporary download folders that may be deleted or renamed.
- Choose the index database. SQLite is the default for the package; plan a MariaDB-backed deployment if the library or number of users makes scalability and performance important.
- Run a small first index. Import a few hundred representative files, including phone photos, videos, edited images, RAW files and files with location metadata. Check dates, orientation, thumbnails and search results.
- Complete the migration. Follow PhotoPrism’s documented Google Photos migration path, then compare albums and metadata with the exported source before deleting anything from the old location.
- Secure access. Keep the service on your local network until accounts, passwords, updates and remote-access controls are configured. Do not expose an administrative interface directly to the public internet.
Where PhotoPrism may not be the best fit
PhotoPrism’s documented ZimaOS path does not automatically make it the best phone-backup client. If the deciding requirement is that every family member’s phone upload work with minimal intervention, test the mobile workflow rather than assuming the web interface will feel like Google Photos. Also test sharing with non-admin users, because a feature that works for a single owner may not match a family’s permissions needs.
Immich: the phone-first option
Why Immich stands out
Immich is a leading self-hosted Google Photos alternative whose practical differentiator is a phone-first backup and library experience. If your main goal is to replace Google Photos’ automatic camera uploads, start by installing Immich on a test dataset and pairing the mobile client with the phones that will actually use it.
The relevant question is not merely whether Immich can display a folder. It is whether uploads continue reliably when a phone is locked, on cellular data, short on battery or temporarily offline; whether multiple household accounts remain separate; and whether the web library reflects the same albums and dates as the mobile client.
Immich evaluation steps
- Check the current release requirements. Immich changes rapidly, so verify the release documentation and hardware requirements immediately before installation. Do not copy an old compose file or assume that a package built for another server will remain compatible.
- Install in an isolated test location. Use a dedicated library folder and database so an upgrade or failed migration cannot damage your only archive.
- Connect one phone first. Enable backup for a controlled set of recent photos and videos. Confirm that uploads resume after interruption and that the originals arrive at the expected resolution.
- Test account boundaries. Create the users you need and verify that private libraries, shared albums and links expose only the intended items.
- Exercise search and recognition. Search for dates, locations, people and file types using your own images. Treat face recognition and semantic results as conveniences that require verification, not as archival truth.
- Test an upgrade and restore. Keep a copy of the application’s documented backup information, then rehearse restoring the database and reconnecting the library before relying on the service.
Trade-offs to understand
Immich’s fast development is both an advantage and an operational cost. New releases can improve the mobile workflow, but you must read current upgrade notes and keep a rollback plan. The available data does not establish a stable hardware baseline, indexing benchmark, face-recognition accuracy figure or migration-completeness score for Immich; those are variables to validate on your ZimaOS hardware.
Choose Immich when phone automation is the first acceptance test. Choose another service if you cannot commit to monitoring updates or if you need a deployment path whose ZimaOS packaging and database behavior are already explicitly documented.

Its documented format coverage is unusually broad: photos, video, RAW, HEIC, Live Photos and x265 video are marked as supported. The project also describes Live Photos and RAW-plus-JPEG variant handling, timeline views and filesystem scanning. That combination suits photographers and households whose archive includes camera originals rather than only compressed phone JPEGs.
When LibrePhotos is the right choice
Pick LibrePhotos when local ownership and an open-source stack matter more than a polished, commercial-cloud-like mobile experience. It is a good candidate for users who want face, place, event and timeline organization while retaining control of the underlying folders.
Community-maintained software can require more hands-on troubleshooting than a package with a tightly documented ZimaOS deployment. Before committing, verify the current installation instructions, supported architecture and upgrade process for your device. The feature list establishes format support, not identical behavior for every codec, camera maker or Live Photo variant, so test representative files.

LibrePhotos test procedure
- Prepare a read-only sample. Include HEIC and JPEG phone images, RAW-plus-JPEG pairs, Live Photos, videos and files with GPS metadata.
- Point the scanner at that folder. Confirm that the application can read the existing filesystem without forcing a proprietary import or changing filenames.
- Review grouping. Check whether RAW and JPEG variants, Live Photos, events and timelines appear as you expect.
- Check recognition privately. Validate face and place results manually before using them to make decisions about deleting or deduplicating originals.
- Measure the client experience. Test browser access on a desktop and the mobile workflow used by each household member. A strong local index does not compensate for a client that people avoid.

How to migrate from Google Photos without losing your archive
1. Inventory before exporting
Record the approximate size of your library, the number of videos, the cameras and phones represented, and whether you rely on albums, favorites, face groupings, location data or edits. This list becomes your acceptance test. A migration that preserves every file but loses the albums your family uses every day is not complete for your purposes.
2. Export a source copy
Use Google Photos’ export process to obtain an offline copy, then preserve that export unchanged. Keep the export outside the application’s working directory until you have verified checksums, file counts and representative metadata. Do not treat an application import as your first backup.
3. Normalize only when necessary
Keep original filenames and embedded metadata whenever possible. If the export includes sidecar metadata, keep each sidecar with its corresponding file and follow the destination application’s documented import rules. Avoid bulk date or filename changes until you have a reversible copy; a mistaken normalization pass can make chronological sorting and duplicate detection harder.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
4. Import a representative sample
Start with recent phone images, older camera folders, RAW-plus-JPEG pairs, HEIC files, Live Photos, videos, screenshots and images with GPS data. Check capture dates, orientation, location, edits, duplicates and thumbnail quality in the chosen application. Compare albums manually rather than assuming an export folder structure equals an album structure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →5. Import the complete archive
After the sample passes, index the full library. Large imports can consume CPU, memory and storage bandwidth for an extended period, so schedule them when the server is not handling other critical tasks. Keep the original export untouched until the new index and your backup have both been verified.
6. Recreate sharing deliberately
Rebuild household accounts, shared albums and external links only after private-library permissions are correct. Links that worked in Google Photos will not automatically carry over, and face groups or automatically generated albums may need to be reviewed by hand.
Hardware, storage and database planning
Host capacity
For PhotoPrism on ZimaOS, the published baseline is a 64-bit system with at least two cores and 3 GB of RAM. Treat that as the minimum for a good experience, not a sizing formula for a large family archive. Indexing, thumbnail generation, video handling and several simultaneous users all increase resource demand.
Immich and LibrePhotos require current, application-specific checks before deployment because their packages and requirements can change. Leave free capacity for the operating system, database growth, thumbnails, temporary imports and future upgrades rather than filling every disk with originals.
Storage layout
Separate originals from generated data when practical. Originals should live on dependable storage with snapshots or another recovery mechanism; thumbnails and indexes can be regenerated, although rebuilding them may take considerable time. A mirrored disk arrangement can improve availability, but mirroring is not a backup because accidental deletion or corruption is copied to both sides.

Backups
- Maintain at least one backup that is not mounted continuously to the ZimaOS host.
- Back up original files, application databases and configuration details needed to reconnect volumes.
- Keep a second copy in another physical location when the library is irreplaceable.
- Test restoring a sample of originals and a database before you trust the system.
- Document who can access the server and how to recover if the primary administrator is unavailable.
Privacy and remote-access safeguards
Local hosting reduces dependence on a third-party photo service, but it does not automatically make the system private. Use unique passwords, separate administrator and everyday accounts, apply operating-system and application updates, and limit network exposure. If you need access away from home, prefer a properly configured private network or VPN-style access over forwarding an administrative port directly to the internet.
Review shared links as carefully as you would review cloud links. A self-hosted URL can still reveal private images to anyone who receives it. Remove test accounts, rotate credentials after an administrator changes, and check logs or access notifications when the application provides them.
A practical decision framework
Choose PhotoPrism first when documentation reduces risk
Start with PhotoPrism if you own a ZimaBoard, ZimaBlade or ZimaCube and want an App Store deployment with explicit volume, port and database guidance. It is the most directly documented option for ZimaOS, and its combined search filters make it a strong browser-based organizer. Plan a database decision early if your library is large.
Choose Immich first when phones are the source of truth
Start with Immich when the replacement must quietly back up several phones and make those uploads immediately usable. Test the actual devices, cellular conditions, account separation and recovery process. Because the project changes quickly, include release review and upgrade testing in your maintenance routine.
Choose LibrePhotos first when local control and formats dominate
Start with LibrePhotos when you want an open-source, local library that scans existing folders and organizes faces, places, events and timelines. Its documented support for RAW, HEIC, Live Photos and x265 video is valuable for mixed camera archives. Budget time to validate package maintenance, mobile behavior and grouping on your own files.
Acceptance checklist before retiring the old service
- Every original file opens at full resolution, and representative videos play.
- Capture dates, time zones, orientation and location metadata are correct.
- RAW-plus-JPEG pairs and Live Photos are grouped acceptably.
- Search finds people, places, dates and file types you care about.
- Phone uploads resume after interruption and do not create unexplained duplicates.
- Each household account sees only the intended private and shared content.
- At least one complete backup and one restored sample have been verified.
- You know how to update the application, back up its database and recover its configuration.
When those checks pass, remove the old cloud dependency only if the new service and its backups meet your needs. Otherwise, keep the old export as an archive while you refine the self-hosted workflow.
