For most people, the best Xbox Series X alternative for Switch emulation is a Windows handheld such as the ROG Xbox Ally or ROG Xbox Ally X when broad Windows software support, driver access and flexible power modes matter most. Choose a Steam Deck OLED if portability, SteamOS/Linux integration, microSD expansion and straightforward television docking are more important. Choose a desktop gaming PC if you want the most performance headroom and the ability to upgrade individual parts.
A Nintendo Switch 2 is a different category: it plays Nintendo software natively and is not an emulator host. Nintendo says the hardware differs from the original Switch and that some Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible, so it should not be presented as a replacement for a Switch emulator.
No device can be promised to run every Switch game at full speed. Results change with the game, Ryujinx build, graphics driver, power mode, shader cache and settings. The comparisons below identify the most sensible host for each use case rather than declaring a universal winner.
What you are actually choosing
Switch emulation means running software such as Ryujinx on a general-purpose computer and asking it to reproduce the console’s operating-system and graphics behavior. The host must provide a supported operating system, enough memory, a compatible graphics driver, fast storage and controls that suit the game. A handheld adds battery limits and thermal constraints; a desktop removes most of those constraints but gives up portability.
#1 Best Overall

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Ryujinx documentation describes it as “an open-source Nintendo Switch emulator, originally created by gdkchan, written in C#.” Its setup guidance supports Windows, Linux and macOS, lists 8 GiB of RAM as a minimum and calls for current graphics drivers on Windows. Those are baseline requirements, not a guarantee of playable performance.
The most important distinction is between compatibility and speed. A title can boot, reach a menu and still suffer from stutter, rendering errors, missing audio or poor frame pacing. Conversely, a game that works well on one configuration can behave differently after an emulator, driver or game update.

1. Steam Deck OLED: the value-oriented portable host
Steam Deck is an all-in-one portable PC rather than a closed console. That matters because you can use the desktop environment, install Linux-compatible tools and keep your Steam library and emulation files on the same device. Valve’s support documentation covers docking to an external display, connecting USB peripherals and using a microSD card, so the Deck can serve as a handheld during the day and a couch system at night.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Why choose it
- Portable and console-like: SteamOS gives you a controller-first interface, sleep and resume behavior, and a built-in game mode.
- Flexible storage: A microSD card can hold games and emulator data when the internal drive is constrained. A UHS-I card is the relevant class for the documented microSD support.
- Easy television setup: A USB-C dock with HDMI, power delivery and USB ports lets you connect a display, charger and wired or wireless peripherals.
- Linux access: The desktop mode allows you to manage files and applications without replacing the operating system.
Trade-offs
Linux compatibility can require more hands-on work than Windows. An emulator build, graphics stack or game-specific configuration may need adjustment, and a Windows-only utility will not necessarily run natively. The OLED model’s battery life, frame rate and thermals still vary by title and power setting; no general battery or performance number should be treated as a Switch-emulation guarantee.

2. ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X: the Windows-first choice
Xbox’s official handheld page lists ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X as PC-gaming handhelds. Because they run Windows, they fit directly into Ryujinx’s Windows support path: use Windows 10 RS4 or newer and keep the graphics driver current. Windows also provides broad access to controller utilities, driver panels, file-management tools and PC games that may not have Linux equivalents.
Why choose a Windows handheld
- Driver access: You can install the current graphics package supplied for the exact handheld model and roll back if a new driver introduces a game-specific issue.
- Software breadth: Windows versions of emulators, launchers, overlays and troubleshooting utilities are generally available without translation layers.
- Power profiles: The handheld’s performance modes let you trade battery runtime for CPU/GPU headroom. Test a demanding title at a higher mode, then reduce power after you find a stable setting.
- Docking: A USB-C dock can provide HDMI, charging and additional USB ports for a television, keyboard, mouse or controller.
Ally versus Ally X
The two models belong to the same Windows handheld family, so the setup process and emulator software are similar. The Ally X is positioned as the higher-end option; whether that difference matters depends on your games, resolution and desired power profile. Check the current memory, storage, battery and port specification for the exact model and region before buying. The available evidence does not include a controlled Ally-versus-Ally-X benchmark, a universal frame-rate result or a battery comparison.
3. Desktop gaming PC: maximum headroom and upgradeability
A desktop is the least portable but the easiest platform to tune. You can select a stronger CPU, a discrete GPU, at least 16 GiB of RAM and a fast SSD, then replace one component later instead of replacing the whole machine. A desktop also avoids the shared thermal and battery limits that constrain handhelds during long sessions.
When a desktop is the better answer
- You want to play at a higher resolution on a television or monitor.
- You expect to run several demanding games and would rather have spare CPU/GPU capacity than optimize every title.
- You already own a suitable gaming PC and only need to install the emulator and provide legal game dumps.
- You want simple wired networking, multiple displays, full-size controllers and easy access to internal storage.
How to specify one without inventing a “magic” build
Ryujinx’s published minimum is 8 GiB of RAM, but a desktop purchase should leave room for the operating system, game files, shader caches and other applications. A practical planning target is 16 GiB or more, a modern multi-core CPU, a discrete GPU with current drivers and SSD storage. Those are planning guidelines, not an official universal specification. Actual results remain title-specific, and the available official material does not publish a single recommended desktop configuration or a cross-device benchmark.

4. Nintendo Switch 2: a native-console alternative, not emulation
Switch 2 belongs in the comparison because it may answer the underlying desire to play Nintendo software on a newer system. It does not, however, replace a Windows or Linux emulator host. You cannot treat it as a general-purpose PC for installing Ryujinx or other desktop applications.
Nintendo states that Switch 2 hardware differs from Switch hardware and warns that some original Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible. Confirm the status of each game in Nintendo’s current compatibility information before assuming that an existing library will work unchanged. Choose Switch 2 for supported native software, not for importing ROM images, emulator builds or PC accessories.
How emulator results vary
There is no single “best handheld” independent of the game and configuration. The main variables are:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Game workload: A lightweight 2D title and a large 3D world can place very different demands on the CPU and GPU.
- Ryujinx build: Updates can fix one title while changing behavior in another.
- Graphics driver: Windows, Linux and macOS use different driver stacks, and a driver update can alter rendering or stability.
- Power mode and thermals: A handheld running quietly on battery has less headroom than the same device connected to power in a high-performance mode.
- Shader compilation and caches: First runs can stutter while shaders compile; later runs may be smoother after a cache has been created.
- Settings: Resolution, graphics backend, frame pacing and per-game options can change both speed and image quality.
Ryujinx reports a snapshot of approximately 4,300 titles tested, with more than 4,100 booting beyond menus and roughly 3,550 considered playable. Those figures describe the project’s reported compatibility snapshot, not a promise that every title will run well on your particular handheld or desktop.

What you need besides the handheld
- A supported operating system: Ryujinx documentation covers Windows, Linux and macOS. Windows users should be on Windows 10 RS4 or newer.
- Memory: The documented minimum is 8 GiB of RAM. More memory can leave room for the operating system and other tasks.
- Current graphics drivers: Install the driver intended for your exact GPU and operating system before diagnosing emulator behavior.
- Fast storage: Keep the emulator, legal game dumps, firmware and shader data on internal SSD storage or a suitable microSD card. Leave free space for updates and caches.
- Controls: Built-in handheld controls work for many games; a USB or Bluetooth controller can be preferable for television play. Games that use motion or pointer input may need a controller with the required sensors or a mapped alternative.
- Dock and display equipment: For couch play, use a USB-C dock with HDMI, power delivery and USB ports, plus a charger rated for the handheld.
- Legal game and firmware data: Use dumps made from games and hardware you own and are allowed to copy. Do not download ROMs, encryption keys or firmware from unofficial distribution sites.
Legal, safe setup procedure
- Confirm the host: Check that the handheld or PC meets the operating-system and memory requirements. On Windows, verify Windows 10 RS4 or newer and install the current graphics driver.
- Install Ryujinx from its official project distribution: Use the release intended for your operating system. Avoid repackaged downloads that bundle unknown files.
- Prepare your own game dumps: Ryujinx’s setup guidance refers to dumped Nintendo Switch games or homebrew. Dump only software for which you have the legal right to make a backup.
- Prepare firmware legally: The guide refers to installing firmware from an untrimmed cartridge dump. Follow the emulator’s current instructions and keep the firmware version matched to your game requirements.
- Open the emulator’s settings and set storage locations: Point the game directory, firmware location and cache locations to fast storage with adequate free space. Keep personal dumps outside folders that are automatically synchronized or shared publicly.
- Configure input: Bind the handheld controls or an external controller, then test every button before launching a game. Save a profile for the controller you use most often.
- Start with conservative graphics settings: Use the default backend and resolution first. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which change affects stability or image quality.
- Test while connected to power: Run a representative section of the game, watch for shader stutter and check temperatures. After confirming stability, test a lower power mode for portable use.
- Keep separate per-game notes: Record the emulator build, driver version, power mode and settings that worked. This makes it easier to reproduce a stable setup after an update.
Docked television and storage planning
Valve documents Steam Deck support for external displays, USB peripherals and microSD cards. A dock therefore solves three common problems at once: it supplies power, routes video over HDMI and provides ports for controllers or storage. Windows handhelds can use the same accessory pattern, but check USB-C video output, charging wattage and display-resolution support on the exact model.
Use internal SSD storage for the emulator and frequently played games when possible. A UHS-I microSD card is a practical expansion option on Steam Deck; capacity, sustained speed and filesystem compatibility still matter. Keep at least some free space for shader caches, operating-system updates and temporary files rather than filling the card completely.
Decision guide by priority
Choose a Windows handheld when…
You want the broadest PC-software compatibility, direct control over graphics drivers and simple access to Windows troubleshooting tools. This is the clearest route when you already use Windows launchers or utilities and want one portable device for both PC games and emulation.
Choose Steam Deck OLED when…
You value a console-like handheld interface, Linux integration, microSD expansion and a documented docked setup. Accept that some Windows-specific tools may require alternatives and that per-game tuning is part of the experience.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Choose a desktop when…
You prioritize performance headroom, high-resolution television play, quiet sustained operation and future upgrades over portability. It is also the sensible choice if you already own a capable gaming PC.
Choose Switch 2 when…
You want Nintendo’s native software experience and do not need to run an emulator. Check each game’s compatibility status because Nintendo says some original Switch titles may not be supported or fully compatible.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Practical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Ryujinx will not start | Operating-system support, graphics driver or corrupted installation | Confirm the operating-system version, update or roll back the GPU driver, then reinstall from the official distribution. |
| A game reaches the menu but runs poorly | Title-specific compatibility, power mode, shader compilation or settings | Test while connected to power, allow shaders to compile, use default settings and change one option at a time. |
| Visual glitches appear after a driver update | Driver-emulator interaction | Record the working driver version, test the previous recommended driver for your hardware and report the reproducible configuration to the emulator project. |
| Stutter is worst on the first launch | Shader compilation and cache creation | Repeat the same section after the cache is built; avoid deleting caches unless troubleshooting requires a clean rebuild. |
| Controls work in menus but not in-game | Incorrect profile or controller mapping | Open input settings, select the intended controller profile, bind each required button and test again before launching. |
| The handheld shuts down or slows during play | Thermal or power limits | Connect the charger, use a higher performance profile, improve ventilation and reduce resolution or demanding settings if necessary. |
| Docked display shows no picture | Dock, cable, power delivery or display handshake | Connect power first, reseat HDMI and USB-C, test another display input and verify that the dock supports video output for your handheld. |
Costs and ownership considerations
There is no reliable single price comparison here because handheld prices, bundles, storage capacities and regional availability change. Budget for the host device, a charger if one is not included, legal storage for games, a dock and an external controller if you plan to play on a television. A desktop may cost more initially but can be upgraded piece by piece; a handheld includes screen, controls and battery in one purchase.
Do not evaluate a device solely by its advertised peak performance. The relevant total is the configuration you can sustain: storage capacity after the operating system, the power mode you can tolerate on battery, the dock and accessories you need, and the time you are willing to spend on per-game settings.
Bottom line
For a portable Switch-emulation PC, start with a Windows handheld such as the ROG Xbox Ally or Ally X if driver access and software breadth are your priorities. Pick Steam Deck OLED for a Linux-centered, value-oriented handheld that transitions naturally to docked play. Pick a desktop gaming PC when upgradeability and sustained headroom matter more than carrying the system. Treat Switch 2 as a native Nintendo console, not as an emulator alternative, and judge every emulation result by the specific game, emulator build, driver and settings rather than by a blanket device ranking.
