There is no single TJ Hughes replacement that is cheapest for every basket. Choose TK Maxx for branded, off-price clothing and homeware; Homesense when the basket is mainly home furnishings and gifts; Home Bargains or B&M for a broad household shop; Savers for toiletries and beauty; and Poundland for low-cost essentials and seasonal top-ups.
The right choice depends on whether you value recognisable brands, predictable everyday lines, the lowest ticket price, a large furniture selection or a nearby specialist. Use the comparison and buying checks below to match the retailer to the items you actually need.
Quick comparison: which TJ Hughes alternative fits your basket?
| Retailer | Best for | Product mix | Stock and shopping pattern | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TK Maxx | Branded and designer fashion, accessories, beauty and selected homeware | Strong emphasis on brand-name and designer products; also includes non-designer lines | New merchandise arrives several times a week, with thousands of items in each delivery according to its UK explanation | Selection is deliberately unpredictable; “up to 60% less than RRP” is a maximum retailer claim, not a saving guaranteed on every item |
| Homesense | A larger homeware and gifts shop | Current-season styles plus some past-season stock | Treasure-hunt format with changing ranges | Exact products and sizes are difficult to plan in advance |
| Home Bargains | One-stop everyday baskets covering toiletries, cleaning, home and occasional clothing | Mix of branded, own-label, seasonal and opportunistic products | More than 600 stores are promoted; online and branch ranges can differ | Seasonal “Star Buys” and special purchases may not be replenished |
| B&M | Mixed baskets and larger home purchases such as furniture, décor, paint and garden items | Branded, own-label and short-term promotional stock across many departments | Manager’s Specials are described as changing about every four weeks; Wow Deals and other offers rotate | Promotional prices and branch selection are time-sensitive; check dimensions, unit prices and returns terms |
| Savers | Perfume, toiletries, skincare and health-and-beauty basics | Strong branded personal-care selection, with value lines alongside it | More than 540 stores across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland | It is a toiletries specialist, not a full homeware or clothing substitute |
| Poundland | Low-price essentials, quick top-ups and seasonal items | Focused £1 range plus a wider assortment containing products above £1 | Its 17 June 2026 update describes expansion of the £1 range across household, health and beauty, food and seasonal categories | Not every product costs £1; pack size and price per unit can make a larger-format competitor better value |
This table is a starting point rather than a cheapest-to-most-expensive ranking. No independent, like-for-like basket study establishes one universally cheapest chain. Prices, pack sizes, branch stock and promotions change too often for a permanent league table.

TK Maxx is the strongest first stop when the reason you shop at TJ Hughes is the chance to find recognisable labels at a discount. Its UK “How we do it” explanation says it offers brand-name and designer products at prices up to 60% less than the recommended retail price (RRP), and at a significant discount to department-store or high-street prices. That wording describes the upper end of its claimed reductions; it does not mean every item is 60% below RRP.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What you can buy
The retailer’s range is organised around women’s, men’s, girls’ and boys’ clothing, accessories, beauty and home. That makes it useful for a mixed fashion-and-home trip rather than only for clearance clothing. You may find a coat, trainers, luggage, bedding, kitchenware or a gift in the same visit, but the exact combination is not predictable.
Why stock changes so quickly
TK Maxx says its buyers purchase throughout the year, new products arrive several times a week and each delivery can contain thousands of items. Frequent deliveries create the “treasure hunt” appeal: visiting on a different day can reveal a completely different size, colour or brand. The trade-off is that a product you leave behind may not be there later, and a popular size may disappear before you return.
How to shop it intelligently
- Use TK Maxx when brand, label or design matters more than finding an identical replacement for a specific product.
- Compare the item’s actual selling price with current prices for the same model, not only the displayed RRP. RRP comparisons can vary by season and retailer.
- Inspect construction, care labels, dimensions and included accessories. Off-price stock can include past-season or limited-run products.
- Check online listings and the nearest branch before travelling, but treat both as a snapshot because deliveries turn over rapidly.
Homesense: choose it when homeware is the main event
Homesense is the sister concept to TK Maxx and is more heavily focused on homeware and gifts. Its description highlights current-season styles as well as some past-season stock, advertised at up to 60% less than RRP. If your list is cushions, lamps, cookware, storage, tableware, bedding, décor or gifts rather than clothing, Homesense is usually a more targeted alternative.

Where Homesense differs from a general discounter
The range is built around discovery rather than a permanently identical catalogue. You might find a distinctive serving set or a designer-looking accent piece, but replacing it later can be difficult. For a furnishing project that needs six identical units, measure your room and ask how many pieces are available before paying; for a one-off statement item, the changing assortment is an advantage.
Use the same discount discipline as at TK Maxx
“Up to 60% less” is a ceiling on the retailer’s advertised comparison with RRP, not a promise that every product beats every competitor. Compare material, dimensions, capacity and warranty information where relevant. Homesense is best when you want style and variety at a reduced price, not when you need a guaranteed replacement part or a stable, repeatable line.
Home Bargains: the broad everyday-value substitute
Home Bargains is the practical choice for a single trip covering toiletries, cleaning supplies, household basics and occasional clothing. Its departments include Clothing, Toiletries, Health, Beauty & Fitness, Home & Electrical, Cleaning & Household and Garden. The company promotes more than 600 stores, making a nearby branch more likely for many shoppers than a specialist homeware format.

What belongs in a Home Bargains basket
- Routine toiletries and personal-care items.
- Cleaning products, laundry supplies and disposable household essentials.
- Basic homeware and small electrical items, subject to the branch’s current selection.
- Seasonal goods and occasional clothing when you are flexible about colour, style or brand.
The parent company describes the offer as including health and beauty products, household goods, food, toys and more. That breadth makes Home Bargains a good TJ Hughes alternative when convenience matters more than finding a particular designer label.
Plan around changing lines
Home Bargains combines branded products with own-label, seasonal and opportunistic buys. Online and in-store ranges can differ, and seasonal “Star Buys” are not guaranteed repeat stock. If an item is essential, verify availability at the branch or online before making a special journey; if it is a discretionary bargain, buy when you see the right size and pack.
Online-versus-store checks
The website displays departments and delivery information, but a listing does not guarantee that your nearest store has the same product. Check delivery thresholds and charges at checkout, compare the delivered total with the local shelf price and allow for the possibility that a seasonal line will sell through before a repeat order.
B&M: the strongest all-rounder for mixed baskets and larger home purchases
B&M covers groceries, toiletries, homeware, furniture, toys and more. Its offers pages also feature clothing and footwear, so it can replace several parts of a TJ Hughes trip in one branch. It is particularly useful when the basket includes larger or practical home items such as furniture, home décor, paint, electricals or garden products as well as everyday consumables.
How B&M promotions work
B&M describes Manager’s Specials as being updated about every four weeks. It also promotes Wow Deals and other reductions across furniture, décor, paint, electricals, garden and toiletries. These are rotating offers rather than a permanent price list. A product shown in an offer may be unavailable at your branch, and the same price may not remain when you return.
Checks for furniture and electricals
- Write down the required dimensions, weight capacity, finish and quantity before you visit.
- Compare the full specification, not just the headline price. A cheaper cabinet with less storage or a smaller appliance may not be the better buy.
- Confirm what is included in the box, such as shelves, fittings, bulbs, batteries or cables.
- Read the current warranty and returns terms, especially for electrical products and assembled furniture.
- Inspect packaging and surfaces at collection or delivery, and keep proof of purchase until you are satisfied.
For consumables, compare the price per item, litre or 100 millilitres. A multi-buy or Wow Deal can be useful, but only if you will use the quantity before it expires and the unit price beats the alternatives.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Savers: the specialist stop for toiletries and beauty
Savers is the most focused alternative when your list is shampoo, soap, oral care, skincare, perfume or related health-and-beauty products. Its homepage is organised around Perfume, Toiletries, Skincare and associated departments, and it states that there are more than 540 stores across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
When Savers beats a general discounter
A specialist layout makes it easier to compare several personal-care brands and formats without searching through furniture, toys or seasonal aisles. Savers is a useful second stop after buying homeware elsewhere, or a first stop when toiletries are the entire mission. Product examples include branded oral care, soap and skincare, so shoppers who want familiar formulations do not have to rely only on own-label substitutes.
What Savers does not replace
Savers is not a like-for-like destination for furniture, household décor or a broad clothing shop. If your basket also needs storage, bedding or kitchenware, combine it with Home Bargains, B&M, TK Maxx or Homesense rather than expecting one branch to cover everything.

Poundland: low-price essentials and seasonal top-ups
Poundland is convenient for a short list of household essentials, health-and-beauty basics, food and seasonal items. In a company update dated 17 June 2026, it said it was expanding its £1 range across those categories. The focused £1 assortment is intended to make value easy to identify, but the wider range includes products priced above £1.
How to avoid the one-pound trap
- Check the quantity, weight or volume on every pack.
- Calculate the price per 100 millilitres, litre or individual item when comparing toiletries and cleaning products.
- Check whether a multipack contains the number of units you expect; a lower shelf price can represent less product.
- For seasonal goods, decide whether the short useful life justifies buying a larger pack elsewhere.
Poundland works best for topping up handwash, cleaning accessories, small household consumables and seasonal supplies without committing to a large shop. It is less suitable when you need a specific clothing size, coordinated home décor or a long-term replacement line.
How to choose by category
Discounted clothing and accessories
Start with TK Maxx if brands, designer labels or fashion variety are priorities. Its frequent deliveries make the selection broad but unpredictable. Home Bargains and B&M can be useful for inexpensive, practical or seasonal clothing when you are flexible about style and availability. Poundland is generally a top-up option rather than a destination for a complete wardrobe.

Furniture, décor and household homeware
Choose Homesense for style-led homeware and gifts, TK Maxx for branded or unexpected finds, and B&M for practical furniture, paint, garden products and larger home projects. Home Bargains is useful for basic household items and cleaning, while Poundland suits small accessories and seasonal consumables.
Toiletries, skincare and fragrance
Savers is the specialist choice. Home Bargains and B&M are strong alternatives for a broader basket that includes cleaning or home products, and Poundland can reduce the cost of small essential top-ups. Compare the exact formulation and pack size before switching brands.
A mixed weekly household shop
Home Bargains or B&M is usually the most efficient first stop because both cover multiple departments. Add Savers if branded beauty or fragrance is important, and use TK Maxx or Homesense when the trip also includes fashion, gifts or distinctive homeware.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to pay less at any of these retailers
1. Compare unit prices, not just shelf prices
For toiletries, detergent and cleaning products, record the price per 100 millilitres, litre, kilogram or item. A £1 pack can contain less product than a larger pack at B&M or Home Bargains. Include delivery charges when comparing online totals.
2. Separate repeat purchases from treasure-hunt purchases
Buy repeat essentials where the same size and formulation are reliably available. Use TK Maxx and Homesense for one-off discoveries, gifts and fashion where substitution is acceptable. This avoids wasting time searching for an off-price item that may never return.
3. Check stock shortly before travelling
TK Maxx deliveries arrive several times a week, while B&M’s Manager’s Specials and Wow Deals rotate. Home Bargains seasonal lines can sell through, and branch ranges differ from online listings. Check the current website listing, delivery status or local stock information where provided, then phone the branch if the journey is long and the item is essential.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
4. Read the promotion’s conditions
Confirm whether a discount is a Manager’s Special, Wow Deal, seasonal reduction or a one-time clearance. Note the end date if one is shown, the number of units allowed and whether the price applies only to selected colours, sizes or branches.
5. Measure before buying home items
For furniture and storage, measure doorways, stairwells and the final location. Check assembled dimensions, not only the carton size. For textiles and cookware, confirm dimensions and capacity so a low price does not become an unusable purchase.
6. Keep returns and warranty information
Save receipts and order confirmations, and read the current returns policy before opening packaging or assembling furniture. Electrical products and large items may have different procedures from clothing or unopened toiletries.

Two-stop plan: broad value plus specialist beauty
- Visit Home Bargains or B&M first for cleaning products, household basics, food and general homeware.
- Use Savers for perfume, skincare, oral care or branded toiletries that were not the best value in the first shop.
This plan suits a routine household basket where fashion and decorative homeware are secondary.
Two-stop plan: fashion plus home
- Start at TK Maxx for clothing, accessories, beauty and branded home finds.
- Continue to Homesense if the main homeware selection is too limited or you need gifts and décor.
Allow flexibility on colour, size and brand because both formats depend on changing stock.
Three-stop plan: project, essentials and personal care
- Use B&M for furniture, paint, garden products or larger home items.
- Use Home Bargains for routine cleaning, household goods and food.
- Finish at Savers for specialist toiletries, skincare or fragrance.
Compare unit prices across the first two stops before paying, particularly for large packs and promotional bundles.
Common mistakes when replacing TJ Hughes
- Assuming “up to” is typical: TK Maxx and Homesense advertise savings of up to 60% versus RRP, but the percentage is not a guarantee for each product.
- Assuming every branch carries the online range: Home Bargains, B&M and other value chains vary by location and delivery.
- Ignoring pack size: Poundland’s £1 range and low-ticket toiletries can have fewer units or less liquid than a larger pack.
- Buying a large item without measurements: B&M furniture and homeware bargains still need checks for dimensions, capacity and included parts.
- Waiting for a repeat of a one-off deal: TK Maxx deliveries, B&M Manager’s Specials and seasonal lines are designed to change.
- Treating Savers as a full department store: It is excellent for beauty and toiletries but does not replace a homeware or clothing shop.
Bottom line by shopper type
| If your priority is… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Branded or designer clothing at a discount | TK Maxx | Its stated model centres on brand-name and designer products with frequent deliveries. |
| Home décor, gifts and style-led furnishings | Homesense | It concentrates on a larger homeware and gifts selection, including current- and past-season stock. |
| One everyday basket across many departments | Home Bargains | It combines toiletries, cleaning, household, home, electrical and occasional clothing categories, with more than 600 stores promoted. |
| Furniture, décor, paint or garden alongside essentials | B&M | Its offers span larger home purchases and everyday departments, with rotating Manager’s Specials and Wow Deals. |
| Perfume, skincare, oral care and toiletries | Savers | It is organised around beauty and personal-care departments and has more than 540 stores across the UK nations. |
| Small, low-cost household or seasonal top-ups | Poundland | Its June 2026 update confirms an expanding £1 range, while the wider assortment covers products above £1. |
For most former TJ Hughes shoppers, the best replacement is a combination rather than one chain: TK Maxx or Homesense for the off-price discovery element, Home Bargains or B&M for the practical household basket, Savers for beauty and Poundland for quick essentials. Compare the exact item, pack size, current local price and availability on the day you buy.
