“Fast” can mean several different things in a photo workflow. A viewer may open a single JPEG quickly but struggle when it has to create thousands of thumbnails. Another may take longer to display the first image while giving you better cache behaviour, metadata access or comparison tools once the folder is loaded.

• First-image launch: how quickly the application displays the file you double-click.
• Sequential browsing: how smoothly you can move through adjacent files with the keyboard or mouse.
• Thumbnail generation: how the program handles a folder that has not been cached before.
• Large-folder navigation: whether the interface remains usable when a directory contains thousands of photos.
• Format decoding: whether RAW, HEIC/HEIF, AVIF, JPEG XL or other files open without an extra codec.
• Workflow overhead: the time spent switching between a viewer, editor, converter and metadata tool.

Windows 11 Photos is convenient because it is already installed, but a dedicated viewer can give you a more direct folder-first workflow. The trade-off is that each alternative has a different balance of editing, organization, portability and interface complexity.

XnView MP’s FAQ states that it reads HEIC and HEIF photos natively on Windows, macOS and Linux, with no separate codec required in most cases. The same FAQ lists AVIF and JPEG XL support and describes the MP engine as faster than XnView Classic. If your library contains newer phone or web formats, this can reduce the need for conversion before browsing.

Comparison and organization workflow

Use the filmstrip when you want a contact-sheet-like view while keeping a larger preview visible. Use full-screen mode when interface chrome would get in the way. The four-image comparison capability is useful for selecting the sharpest frame, checking edits or comparing near-duplicates without opening separate windows.

XnView MP also has a portable Windows archive. Portability is useful on a secondary PC or a USB drive because the application can be carried without treating it as a permanently installed desktop utility. Check the current distribution terms and Windows requirements when downloading.

When simplicity beats feature depth

Every extra panel, cataloguing control and editing command can add friction for someone who simply wants a viewer. ImageGlass is appropriate for a shared PC, a work machine where image inspection is occasional, or a user who prefers to edit in a separate application.

The trade-off is straightforward: the available data provides less vendor detail for ImageGlass than for FastStone or XnView MP. It should therefore be selected for its focused viewing experience, not on the basis of an unsupported claim that it wins a speed benchmark.

nomacs: an open-source, cross-platform option

You convert files repeatedly

Choose IrfanView if batch conversion and command-line control matter more than a cataloguing interface. Choose FastStone if conversion is one part of a broader browse-and-edit process.

You mostly open images and want no clutter

Choose ImageGlass. Its value is focus: a viewer-first experience rather than a broad organizer or utility suite.

You need several operating systems

Choose XnView MP for the most explicitly documented Windows, macOS and Linux workflow. Consider nomacs when open-source licensing is the deciding factor.

You work with phone formats

XnView MP has explicit HEIC/HEIF, AVIF and JPEG XL information. FastStone documents HEIC and WEBP support alongside RAW and common desktop formats. For any other candidate, verify the exact format and version before moving a working library.

How to make a replacement the Windows 11 default

Changing the default prevents Windows from sending every double-click back to Photos. The labels can change slightly between Windows 11 updates, but the process is:

1. Install the viewer from its current official distribution and open it once.
2. Open Settings and select Apps, then Default apps.
3. Search for the application name and open its default-app page.
4. For each extension you use—such as .jpg, .jpeg, .png, .heic or a RAW extension—select the new viewer instead of Photos.
5. Alternatively, right-click a representative file in File Explorer, choose Open with, select the viewer and enable the option to always use it for that file type.
6. Repeat for extensions that Windows treats separately. Setting JPEG as the default does not automatically assign every RAW, HEIC or TIFF extension.

Keep Photos installed until you have opened representative files successfully. Some formats may still depend on a separate codec or application, and a fallback is useful while you verify the new workflow.

A practical test before you commit

Use a copy of a real folder, not a tiny set of sample JPEGs. Include the file types you actually receive and enough files to expose thumbnail and navigation behaviour.

1. Open the folder from File Explorer and record whether the first image appears promptly enough for your work.
2. Move through 20 to 30 adjacent images with the keyboard, including files of different sizes.
3. Switch to the thumbnail or filmstrip view and wait for the initial thumbnails to finish generating.
4. Close and reopen the same folder to see whether the application uses its cache effectively.
5. Open one RAW file, one HEIC or HEIF file, and any AVIF or JPEG XL files in your collection.
6. Inspect EXIF or IPTC data if metadata is part of your process.
7. Compare similar frames; XnView MP can compare up to four at once.
8. Run a small batch conversion on copies, never on your originals, and check the output dimensions, colour and metadata.
9. Test your preferred full-screen, slideshow, keyboard and mouse actions.
