Best overall alternative: choose the QNAP TVS-h874 if you need more drive capacity, PCIe expansion and high-end virtualization. Choose the Synology DiskStation DS1525+ for the easiest administration and backup experience, the ASUSTOR Lockerstor 6 Gen2 for a six-bay system with a broad multimedia app catalog, or the TerraMaster F6-424 for a lower-cost six-bay Plex/Jellyfin appliance. The TerraMaster F6-424 Max is the network-focused TerraMaster option.

The UGREEN NASync iDX6011 Pro is an unusually powerful home NAS: its published specification combines an Intel Core Ultra 7 255H, 64GB of LPDDR5/x memory, dual 10GbE, Thunderbolt 4 and six drive bays. Alternatives therefore involve deliberate compromises in compute, networking, software maturity, capacity or price. No source provides an apples-to-apples transcoding test, so none of these systems should be assigned a guaranteed number of simultaneous 4K streams.

How the alternatives compare

The table uses manufacturer-published specifications and documented software support. “Not stated” means the available product information does not establish a comparable value; it is not a performance estimate.

What makes the iDX6011 Pro difficult to replace

UGREEN’s official specification lists six SATA bays, two M.2 2280 NVMe sockets, a 128GB system SSD and a maximum storage figure of 208TB, calculated as six 32TB drives plus two 8TB M.2 drives. RAID modes are JBOD, Basic, RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10. The unusual part is not merely the bay count: the Core Ultra 7 255H and 64GB of memory give the appliance workstation-like headroom for containers, indexing, virtual machines and media processing.

Dual 10GbE, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, an x8 PCIe Gen4 slot, HDMI output supporting 8K and SD 4.0 make it suitable for fast editing workflows as well as a living-room library. A TechRadar review describes setting up a local media server, while noting that Plex is not in the main application library. Jellyfin, Theatre, Docker or an SSH-based installation are therefore software-path alternatives, not evidence that Plex cannot run.

Synology DiskStation DS1525+: the easiest system to live with

Synology’s alternative is best when administration, backup workflows and a consistent graphical operating system matter more than flagship CPU performance. DSM is built around guided storage creation, user permissions, snapshots and package management, so a household can usually delegate routine maintenance without learning container orchestration.

The five-bay layout leaves one fewer drive position than the UGREEN unit. Synology specifies two NVMe sockets for cache or storage use and a Gen3 x2 slot for a network upgrade; the optional 10GbE module can narrow the networking gap, but it is an additional purchase and does not make the platform equivalent to dual 10GbE built in.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Memory starts at 8GB of DDR4 ECC SODIMM and can be expanded to 32GB. That is ample for a straightforward media library, backups and a few light services, but it offers less headroom than the baseline for many simultaneous containers or virtual machines. Synology’s documented Media Server package streams music, photos and video stored on the NAS to televisions, stereo systems and other network devices. This is a simple DLNA-style route when a client does not need Plex-specific metadata or user management.

Choose the DS1525+ when

  • You want DSM’s mature storage, account and backup tools.
  • Your clients direct-play most files and do not require heavy real-time transcoding.
  • Lower power use and a quieter, less workstation-like appliance are more important than 10GbE everywhere.

Check before buying

  • Confirm the exact DSM package and Plex installation method for your region and CPU revision.
  • Budget for the optional network module if your switch and workstations are already 10GbE.
  • Plan the five-bay RAID layout before purchase; replacing the sixth UGREEN bay with external storage changes cost and complexity.

QNAP TVS-h874: the capacity and expansion choice

The TVS-h874 is the strongest alternative for a home lab that has outgrown six bays. It provides eight SATA positions, two PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 sockets and two PCIe expansion slots, so a buyer can add networking, storage or accelerator hardware without replacing the chassis. HDMI output is built in, and listed configurations include dual 10GbE.

QNAP lists configurations up to 64GB of DDR4. The TVS-h874X-i9-64G variant uses a 16-core/24-thread Intel Core i9, making it the most explicitly high-end CPU option in this shortlist. That combination is useful for virtual machines, build jobs, databases and container stacks in addition to media serving. It does not, by itself, establish a fixed Plex stream count; codec, bitrate, subtitle format, client capability and whether a stream is direct-play or transcoded remain decisive.

The trade-off is physical and operational. Eight bays and expansion cards generally mean a larger chassis, more electricity and more configuration decisions than a compact home NAS. QNAP offers several TVS-h874 SKUs, so verify the processor, installed memory, network ports and included accessories on the exact listing rather than assuming every model has the i9 configuration.

Choose the TVS-h874 when

  • You need more than six internal drives or want separate pools for media, backups and virtual machines.
  • You already operate 10GbE and expect sustained transfers from several clients.
  • You will use PCIe cards, containers or virtualization heavily enough to justify the higher system cost.

ASUSTOR Lockerstor 6 Gen2: a flexible six-bay media platform

The Lockerstor 6 Gen2 (AS6706T) keeps the six-bay form factor while emphasizing application choice. ASUSTOR’s App Central can install UPnP Media Server and OwnTone, allowing multimedia streaming to computers, televisions and mobile devices. Plex’s compatibility list includes ASUSTOR NAS families, so Plex is a documented platform path, although the exact package and hardware behavior should be checked for the specific model.

Available material does not provide a directly comparable CPU, memory, network-port or transcoding specification for the AS6706T. That makes it unsuitable for a promise such as “handles a certain number of simultaneous 4K transcodes.” Treat it as a six-bay software-and-app alternative, then confirm processor generation, RAM, upgrade options and network interfaces on the regional product page.

Choose the Lockerstor 6 Gen2 when

  • You want six internal bays and prefer to select among several multimedia applications.
  • Your playback devices can direct-play the majority of your library.
  • You are willing to verify hardware details instead of choosing on brand or bay count alone.

TerraMaster F6-424: the value six-bay Plex route

TerraMaster lists the F6-424 with an Intel N95 quad-core processor, 8GB of DDR5 memory expandable to 32GB, dual 2.5GbE and two M.2 NVMe slots. Its product listing marks Plex Media Server as supported, and Plex separately lists TerraMaster among supported NAS families. That gives this model a more direct Plex starting point than the UGREEN appliance’s main-library situation.

The N95 platform is substantially below the UGREEN Core Ultra 7 specification, and 2.5GbE links are slower than dual 10GbE. Those differences matter when several users copy large files, when the NAS hosts additional services, or when media must be transcoded rather than direct-played. They do not prevent a useful household library: with compatible clients and sensible media formats, direct play moves most of the work to the client device.

Choose the F6-424 when

  • You want six bays, two NVMe sockets and an explicitly listed Plex package.
  • Your network is 1GbE or 2.5GbE and you do not need workstation-class transfer rates.
  • Value and straightforward media hosting outweigh virtual-machine performance.

TerraMaster F6-424 Max: prioritize network throughput

The F6-424 Max retains six bays and two built-in M.2 NVMe slots but adds dual 10GbE. It is the TerraMaster model to examine when the standard F6-424’s 2.5GbE links are the limiting factor. The available product information identifies 8GB of DDR5 but does not establish the CPU, memory expansion behavior or a universal Plex package for every regional listing.

Before committing, check the exact listing for processor details, whether memory can be upgraded, the included 10GbE implementation and the current Plex installation path. A 10GbE NAS still requires compatible switches, cabling and client adapters; otherwise its headline interface provides little benefit over a 2.5GbE model.

Plex, Jellyfin and DLNA: select the software path first

Media-server software determines how much setup work you will do and which clients can connect. Plex and Jellyfin provide libraries, posters, accounts and remote-playback features. DLNA-oriented packages such as Synology Media Server, ASUSTOR UPnP Media Server and OwnTone are simpler for televisions and stereos that already browse network media, but they do not provide the same library-management experience.

Use a documented native package

  1. Install the NAS operating-system updates before adding applications.
  2. Open the vendor’s package center or app catalog and search for the exact server name, such as Plex Media Server, UPnP Media Server or OwnTone.
  3. Create a dedicated media share, apply read permissions to the service account and keep downloads or temporary transcode files in a separate location.
  4. Complete the server’s web setup, point each library at the correct folders and allow indexing to finish before judging performance.
  5. Test playback on every client type in the home, including subtitles and remote access if those are required.

Use containers or SSH when the package is absent

On a system such as the iDX6011 Pro, where Plex is not in the main app library, Docker, Jellyfin, Theatre or an SSH installation can provide alternatives. Container deployment gives you version control and isolation but adds responsibilities: persistent configuration volumes, file ownership, port mappings, hardware-device access and update procedures. SSH installation offers flexibility but leaves more of the security and upgrade work to the administrator. Use a documented image or package for the NAS operating system and keep a written rollback plan.

Transcoding, direct play and realistic capacity planning

A NAS does not transcode every stream. A direct-play client receives the stored video, audio and subtitles with little server-side conversion. Transcoding occurs when a television, phone or remote connection cannot accept the source codec, resolution, bitrate or subtitle format. The workload can change dramatically between one 1080p conversion and several 4K conversions with burned-in subtitles.

For that reason, the published CPU names in the table are capability indicators, not stream guarantees. The iDX6011 Pro and the high-end TVS-h874 configuration have the most obvious compute headroom on paper. The DS1525+, Lockerstor 6 Gen2 and F6-424 may still be excellent when clients direct-play, but buyers who expect frequent conversions should verify model-specific hardware-transcoding support and run their own representative files.

Storage, networking and expansion decisions

Drive layout

Six-bay systems let you balance usable capacity and redundancy without immediately buying an expansion chassis. RAID 5 tolerates one drive failure, RAID 6 tolerates two, and RAID 10 favors performance and rebuild simplicity at the cost of half the raw capacity. RAID is not a backup: maintain a separate copy of irreplaceable media metadata, family photographs and documents.

NVMe and SSD use

Every candidate with documented M.2 slots can use NVMe for cache or, depending on the operating system, a fast storage pool. Cache helps repeated small reads and metadata workloads more reliably than it helps a single large movie stream. Do not buy NVMe drives solely to increase sequential media throughput without checking the NAS operating system’s supported modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10GbE versus 2.5GbE

10GbE is valuable for simultaneous workstation transfers, editing directly from the NAS and large backup windows. For one television streaming a compressed file, even 1GbE is usually sufficient. To realize 10GbE, the switch, cabling, client adapter and NAS port must all support the same link speed; otherwise the connection negotiates at the lower common rate.

Power, noise, price and availability

The supplied specifications do not provide a controlled noise test, measured idle or load power figures, current prices, stock status or regional bundle information. Avoid treating bay count or CPU class as a reliable proxy for electricity use. A larger eight-bay chassis with add-in cards will generally require more cooling and expansion power than a simpler system, but the actual result depends on drives, fan curves and workload.

Price comparisons are especially sensitive to drive bundles, memory configuration, sales tax, shipping and country. Verify the exact SKU and retailer listing on the day of purchase, then add the cost of hard drives, NVMe modules, a 10GbE switch or adapters, UPS protection and backup storage. A less expensive NAS can become the costlier project if it requires network upgrades or external expansion to meet your original plan.

Common mistakes and fixes

Buying for transcode counts

Symptom: a specification sheet looks powerful but playback stutters. Fix: identify which clients are forcing conversion, test direct play, optimize subtitle formats and measure with your own files. Do not rely on an unverified “simultaneous streams” number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming Plex is one-click everywhere

Symptom: Plex is missing from the NAS app catalog. Fix: check the model-specific Plex package, then consider Jellyfin, a supported container or an SSH installation. Keep configuration and media paths persistent so an update does not erase the library.

Ignoring network bottlenecks

Symptom: a 10GbE NAS copies at 1GbE speeds. Fix: check link negotiation on the NAS, switch and client, replace unsuitable cabling or adapters, and test a single large file before blaming the storage pool.

Using RAID as the only backup

Symptom: deleted or encrypted files are unrecoverable despite a healthy array. Fix: maintain versioned backups on a separate device or location and periodically restore a sample file.

Which alternative should you buy?

  • Pick QNAP TVS-h874 for eight bays, dual 10GbE, PCIe expansion and the heaviest virtual-machine or container workload.
  • Pick Synology DS1525+ for DSM’s management and backup ecosystem, a documented Media Server package and a lower-complexity household setup.
  • Pick ASUSTOR Lockerstor 6 Gen2 when six bays and a broad multimedia app choice matter, provided the exact hardware meets your transcoding needs.
  • Pick TerraMaster F6-424 for a value-focused six-bay Plex/Jellyfin appliance on a 2.5GbE network.
  • Pick TerraMaster F6-424 Max when six bays and dual 10GbE are more important than a low entry price, after verifying CPU and Plex details for the listing you can buy.
  • Keep the UGREEN NASync iDX6011 Pro on your shortlist if its six bays, 64GB memory, dual 10GbE, Thunderbolt 4 and PCIe connectivity solve a real workload and you are comfortable choosing a non-native Plex installation path.
