The strongest alternatives depend on what you are trying to improve: Sonos Ultimate Immersive Set is the premium ecosystem choice, Sony BRAVIA Theatre Quad is the closest separate-speaker alternative, Samsung HW-Q990H is the value-oriented complete package, and LG Sound Suite Immersive Suite 7 Pro is most relevant to LG television owners. Compare the complete system—not just a soundbar—because the Trio, Rear 9 and Sub 9 are three separate purchases.

The short answer

Choose the Sonos Ultimate Immersive Set if a mature multi-room platform and a single-brand wireless system matter most. Choose Sony’s BRAVIA Theatre Quad if you want physically separate speakers rather than a soundbar and want to stay within Sony’s wireless ecosystem. Choose Samsung’s HW-Q990H when you want a complete Dolby Atmos-oriented package without assembling the Sony components individually. Consider LG’s Sound Suite Immersive Suite 7 Pro primarily when your television and other devices are already in LG’s ecosystem.

The right replacement is not necessarily the cheapest bar. A fair comparison has to include the front speakers, surround speakers, subwoofer, placement requirements, app setup, television integration and future expansion. Regional prices, suffixes and bundle contents can change, so verify the exact model sold in your country before ordering.

What the Sony reference package includes

Sony’s BRAVIA Theatre Trio is a three-unit front system supporting Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and IMAX Enhanced for compatible content. Sony’s May 27, 2026 launch announcement says the Trio can be expanded with optional subwoofers and rear speakers, including dual-subwoofer configurations. Sony lists a US suggested retail price of $2,199.99 for the Trio itself.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The surround and bass additions are separate products. Sony’s US catalog lists the BRAVIA Theater Rear 9 at $749.99 and the BRAVIA Theater Sub 9 at $899.99. Buying all three at those listed US prices produces a total of $3,849.97 before tax or delivery. This is the figure to use when comparing a complete system, rather than comparing another brand’s full bundle with the Trio’s front-unit price alone.

What Hi-Fi reports the following regional prices:

Component United Kingdom United States Australia
BRAVIA Theatre Trio £1,999 $2,000 AU$2,999
BRAVIA Theater Rear 9 £699 $750 AU$1,299
BRAVIA Theater Sub 9 £899 $900 AU$1,299
Complete three-part total £3,597 $3,650 AU$5,597

The regional totals are simple additions of the prices reported by What Hi-Fi and are not currency conversions. Retail promotions, taxes, stock and bundle policies can change the amount you actually pay.

Rear 9 compatibility

The Rear 9 is designed for the Trio, Bar 9, Bar 8, Bar 7, HT-A7000, HT-A5000 and HT-A3000. Setup is handled through Sony’s BRAVIA Connect app. That compatibility list matters if you already own one of those systems, but it also means the Rear 9 is not a generic surround speaker that can be moved freely between unrelated platforms.

Why the package costs so much

The Trio’s price reflects a front system, optional wireless rears and a large subwoofer bought as separate units. Sony’s documented dual-subwoofer expansion is useful for buyers planning a larger room or a later bass upgrade, but it also makes the final cost and floor space higher than a one-box soundbar purchase.

1. Sonos Ultimate Immersive Set: the premium ecosystem alternative

The Sonos Ultimate Immersive Set combines the Sonos Arc Ultra soundbar with a Sonos Sub and surround speakers. What Hi-Fi lists the package at £2,516, $2,446 or AU$4,366, making it a premium purchase but still a direct complete-package comparison with the fully expanded Sony system.

Why choose it

  • The package is assembled around one brand, simplifying ownership of the soundbar, subwoofer and surrounds.
  • Sonos has a mature multi-room ecosystem, so the theater can fit into a broader home audio installation.
  • The bundle avoids the arithmetic and compatibility decisions involved in buying Sony’s front system, Rear 9 and Sub 9 separately.
  • It is a natural choice when synchronized music playback in other rooms is as important as movie sound.

Trade-offs

The package is not a budget alternative. Its listed price is £2,516 / $2,446 / AU$4,366, and the exact bundle or retailer contents should be checked before purchase. Sonos also has its own ecosystem boundaries: adding or replacing components should be planned around supported Sonos products rather than assumed to work like universal speakers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should buy it

Pick this set when you value app-based control, multi-room expansion and a tidy wireless installation more than matching Sony’s hardware. It is especially sensible for a household already using Sonos speakers, because the theater can become another zone instead of a standalone system.

2. Sony BRAVIA Theatre Quad: the separate-speaker Sony route

What Hi-Fi specifically names the BRAVIA Theatre Quad for buyers who do not want a soundbar component. It uses separate speakers and Sony’s 360 Spatial Sound Mapping, giving you more freedom to position the front and surround channels than a bar-based design.

Why choose it

  • You want a physically separated speaker presentation instead of relying on a single front enclosure.
  • You prefer Sony’s wireless platform and BRAVIA-focused integration.
  • You may want to add or use a compatible Sub 9 as part of the same ecosystem.
  • Your room allows stands, shelves, power outlets and the calibration time required by multiple speakers.

What to verify

Current Quad bundle pricing and regional availability were not established in the cited comparison, so check the local Sony listing. Confirm whether the package you are viewing includes a subwoofer, which speaker stands or mounts are supplied, and whether the included components match the layout you want. A Quad package without a subwoofer is not a like-for-like comparison with the Trio plus Sub 9.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Also check the television and app requirements before buying. Separate speakers can improve placement flexibility, but they create more decisions about spacing, power and calibration than a conventional soundbar package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Who should buy it

The Quad is the closest same-brand alternative for someone who likes Sony’s platform but dislikes the idea of a soundbar. It is a placement-first choice: measure the room and decide where each speaker can go before comparing the price.

3. Samsung HW-Q990H: the value-oriented complete package

What Hi-Fi includes the Samsung HW-Q990H in its 2026 recommended soundbar and surround-system guides. It is the clearest value comparison for shoppers who want a complete Dolby Atmos package without buying a front system, wireless rears and subwoofer as separate Sony products.

Why it belongs on the shortlist

  • The purchase is framed as a complete soundbar-and-surround package rather than a component-by-component build.
  • It is the most straightforward option when the priority is immersive movie sound at a lower total outlay than the fully expanded Sony reference system.
  • It gives you a direct alternative to evaluate on included speakers, room calibration, HDMI features and television-brand integration.

Model-name caution

Verify the exact suffix and local stock. Samsung model naming can vary by market, and a similarly named product may not have the same included speakers or features. Do not assume that a listing for a different regional suffix is identical to the HW-Q990H discussed by What Hi-Fi.

Who should buy it

Choose the Q990H when you want the least complicated path to a full surround package and are willing to trade the Sony-specific expansion path for Samsung’s own ecosystem. Before checkout, compare the complete box contents and connection features with the television you actually own.

4. LG Sound Suite Immersive Suite 7 Pro: a secondary premium option

What Hi-Fi lists LG Sound Suite Immersive Suite 7 Pro as another same-tier alternative, while describing it as less appealing than the Sonos package. Its strongest rationale is ecosystem fit: it is most relevant when your television and other connected devices are already from LG.

Reasons to consider it

  • You want a premium LG-branded theater system that fits an existing LG setup.
  • You prefer to keep television and audio control within the same device ecosystem.
  • You are comparing premium packages rather than looking for the lowest-cost route.

Reasons to be cautious

The exact product name, bundle contents and current retail availability should be verified in your market. The cited comparison places it behind the Sonos package as an overall alternative, so it should be a targeted choice for LG owners rather than the default recommendation for everyone.

How to compare the systems fairly

1. Compare the complete installed cost

For the Sony reference, add the Trio, Rear 9 and Sub 9. In the US catalog figures, that is $3,849.97. In What Hi-Fi’s regional figures, the equivalent totals are £3,597, $3,650 and AU$5,597. Then compare each rival’s full bundle, stands or mounts if required, and any additional subwoofer you plan to add. A headline soundbar price is not a complete-system price.

2. Match the speaker layout to the room

The Trio begins as a three-unit front system with optional rears and subwoofer. The Quad uses separate speakers. Sonos and Samsung use conventional soundbar-plus-rear layouts, while LG is another premium soundbar-oriented option. Separate speakers can provide more placement freedom, but they also need more floor or shelf space, power outlets and setup time.

3. Treat immersive-format support as model-specific

Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and IMAX Enhanced are documented for the Trio for compatible content. The competing products must be checked by exact regional model and suffix; do not infer support from a similarly named product or from a retailer’s generic description. If a particular movie, console or streaming service is important to you, verify the signal path from that source through your television and audio system.

4. Check expansion limits before buying

Sony documents optional rear speakers, optional subwoofers and dual-subwoofer configurations for the Trio. The Rear 9 has a defined Sony compatibility list. Sonos and Samsung have their own supported-component boundaries, and the LG package should be checked against the components sold in your region. Decide now whether you are likely to add another subwoofer, replace the surrounds or move the system to another room.

5. Check television and platform integration

Compare HDMI features, app setup, multi-room behavior and television-brand integration using the exact television model and regional audio product. An ecosystem advantage is valuable only if your existing devices support it. Samsung may be the practical match for a Samsung-centered home; LG is most compelling for an LG-centered home; Sony and Sonos each make the most sense when their respective platforms already fit your household.

A practical decision framework

Choose Sonos when…

Select the Ultimate Immersive Set when multi-room audio, one-brand wireless control and an established app experience outweigh the desire to use Sony hardware. Confirm the precise bundle and local price because the listed amount is premium.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the Quad when…

Select the BRAVIA Theatre Quad when your main objection to the Trio is its soundbar-style front arrangement. Plan speaker locations first, then verify the bundle price and whether a Sub 9 is included or required.

Choose Samsung when…

Select the HW-Q990H when a complete package and value are more important than staying in Sony’s upgrade path. Verify the market suffix, included speaker count and compatibility with your television.

Choose LG when…

Select the Sound Suite Immersive Suite 7 Pro when LG television and device integration is a deciding factor. Treat it as a secondary premium option and confirm the exact name and availability in your country.

Buying and setup checklist

  1. Measure the room. Record the width of the television wall, listening distance, available rear-speaker positions, nearby power outlets and the space available for a subwoofer.
  2. Write down your source devices. Include the television, streaming box, game console and disc player. Check how each will connect and which device will handle audio-format pass-through.
  3. Price a complete package. Add the front system, rears, subwoofer, stands or mounts and delivery. For the Sony reference, use the complete Trio, Rear 9 and Sub 9 total rather than the Trio price alone.
  4. Verify the exact regional model. Check the full name, suffix, included components, supported formats and current stock. This is particularly important for the HW-Q990H and for LG’s Suite 7 Pro naming.
  5. Confirm ecosystem compatibility. Check the required mobile app, television integration and whether future speakers or subwoofers are supported.
  6. Plan placement before opening the boxes. Separate-speaker systems need stands, shelves or wall positions. Soundbar systems still require clear space in front of the television and suitable rear locations.
  7. Allow time for calibration. Follow the manufacturer’s app or on-screen process, then test dialogue, surround effects and bass from several seats. Do not judge the system from one listening position if the room has multiple viewers.
  8. Keep the return conditions. Large audio products can be difficult to resell or ship. Retain packaging until you have confirmed that every speaker connects and your television passes the signals you use.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Comparing a bar with a full system: the Sony Trio’s $2,199.99 US suggested retail price excludes the Rear 9 and Sub 9.
  • Assuming every Rear 9 listing is universal: Sony identifies specific compatible systems, including the Trio, Bar 9, Bar 8, Bar 7, HT-A7000, HT-A5000 and HT-A3000.
  • Ignoring regional suffixes: Samsung naming can vary by market, and the same-looking listing may contain different speakers.
  • Assuming format support: verify Dolby Atmos, DTS:X or IMAX Enhanced support for the exact regional product and your source chain.
  • Underestimating placement: separate speakers need more planning, power and physical space than a front soundbar.
  • Buying for brand integration without checking devices: ecosystem benefits depend on the television, app and other hardware you already own.
  • Adding a second subwoofer without checking support: Sony documents dual-subwoofer expansion for the Trio, but every competing platform has its own limits.

Bottom line

For most shoppers replacing the fully expanded Sony package, start with the Sonos Ultimate Immersive Set if you want premium multi-room convenience, the BRAVIA Theatre Quad if you want separate Sony speakers, and the Samsung HW-Q990H if total-package value is the priority. Keep LG’s Sound Suite Immersive Suite 7 Pro as a focused option for LG households. Whichever route you take, compare the complete installed system, confirm the exact regional model and plan the room layout before treating a headline price as a bargain.
