The LG C5 65-inch OLED is the best all-round alternative to Samsung’s S90H. It combines Dolby Vision support, webOS and a balanced OLED feature set. Choose the Sony BRAVIA 8 II if accurate film presentation and Sony’s processing matter most; choose Samsung’s S90F if you want the closest same-brand successor and a familiar Samsung experience.

The exact S90H reference is Samsung’s UK QE65S90HAEXXU S90H 4K OLED Vision AI Smart TV. Model suffixes, panel suppliers, HDMI specifications, warranty terms and stock can differ by country, so confirm the full code on any television you buy.

Quick recommendation

  • Best for most buyers: LG C5 65-inch OLED. It is the safest choice when you want a balanced mix of movie support, gaming features, smart-TV usability and broad HDR compatibility, including Dolby Vision.
  • Best for films and careful image processing: Sony BRAVIA 8 II 65-inch OLED. Sony is the better fit when motion, upscaling and a cinematic presentation matter more than matching Samsung’s gaming-oriented feature emphasis.
  • Best same-brand replacement: Samsung S90F 65-inch OLED. It is the natural path if you already prefer Samsung’s interface, HDR10+ approach, industrial design or ecosystem and want a newer S90-series model.

Do not treat the S90F, C5 or BRAVIA 8 II as universal upgrades in every country. A 65-inch television can use a different panel, tuner, stand, port configuration or warranty policy from a similarly named model sold elsewhere.

What the Samsung S90H is—and what an alternative must improve

The S90H is a 65-inch 4K OLED smart television in Samsung’s S90 series. OLED pixels emit their own light, allowing each pixel to switch off for very deep blacks without the haloing commonly associated with illuminated LCD zones. That makes OLED especially attractive for dark-room films, high-contrast games and wide seating arrangements.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

An alternative should be judged on more than peak brightness. The important differences are HDR format support, how the set handles lower-quality broadcasts and streaming video, gaming input support, reflections, sound, operating system, warranty and the price actually available in your region.

The S90H’s regional identity matters. Samsung’s UK listing uses the code QE65S90HAEXXU, while another market may use a different suffix and a different specification. Never assume that a review of one country’s 65-inch S90H applies unchanged to an imported set.

LG C5: the safest all-round alternative

Why it is the default recommendation

The LG C5 is the strongest general-purpose replacement because it covers the widest range of typical 65-inch OLED uses without forcing a single priority. It supports Dolby Vision, runs webOS and is positioned as a balanced OLED package. That combination suits households that watch a mixture of streaming films, live television, console games and PC content.

RTINGS directly compares the C5 with Samsung’s S90D and describes them as close competitors. Its concise verdict is: The LG C5 OLED and the Samsung S90D OLED trade blows. That comparison is useful context, but it is not a laboratory result for every S90H or every 65-inch panel. It indicates that the decision is usually about feature priorities rather than one brand winning every category.

Dolby Vision and everyday viewing

Dolby Vision support is the C5’s clearest format advantage over Samsung’s typical HDR strategy. If your streaming service, UHD disc player or games console supplies Dolby Vision, the television can use that dynamic HDR format rather than falling back to a static HDR10 signal. Confirm the local model’s exact format list before buying, especially when importing a set.

Gaming fit

The C5 belongs on a gamer’s shortlist, but do not rely on a retailer headline that simply says “gaming OLED.” Check the number of HDMI 2.1 inputs, their bandwidth, whether 4K at 120Hz is supported on the ports you will use, the available VRR standards and whether a PC mode offers the refresh rate you need. A buyer with several consoles, a gaming PC and an AV receiver should map those devices before deciding whether the port layout is sufficient.

Who should not choose it

Choose another model if your first priority is Samsung’s interface and same-brand continuity, or if you specifically prefer Sony’s motion and film processing. The C5 is a balanced choice, not proof that every viewer will prefer its image.

Sony BRAVIA 8 II: the film-focused choice

Why Sony makes sense

The BRAVIA 8 II is the alternative for viewers who prioritize Sony processing and a film-focused presentation. Processing affects the material that OLED panel specifications cannot fix: broadcast noise, low-bitrate streaming, difficult gradients, camera pans and the scaling of HD sources to a 4K screen.

That makes the Sony particularly appealing if you watch a large library of Blu-ray discs, older television, live channels or compressed streams rather than only pristine 4K services. Sony’s reputation for natural motion and careful image treatment is the reason to consider this model, not a claim that it is brighter or better for every game.

Check gaming and HDR details before ordering

The BRAVIA 8 II should be evaluated against your actual console and PC requirements. Confirm which HDMI inputs carry the television’s highest-bandwidth mode, whether 4K/120Hz is available where you need it, which VRR standards are supported and whether Dolby Vision gaming is enabled in your region. Also confirm the local HDR list; a name shared across markets does not guarantee identical firmware or inputs.

Best room and viewer profile

It is a strong candidate for a dedicated movie room, a mixed-quality broadcast environment or a household that values a director-like presentation over the largest possible gaming specification sheet. If competitive gaming latency, multiple high-refresh devices or the broadest input flexibility is your first concern, compare the exact port table with the LG and Samsung before committing.

Samsung S90F: the closest same-brand path

Why stay with Samsung

The S90F is the logical alternative when you already like Samsung’s menus, remote, account integration or picture controls. It is positioned in current 65-inch buying guides alongside LG’s C-series and Sony’s BRAVIA models, making it the most direct same-family option rather than a change in viewing philosophy.

Staying with Samsung can also simplify an installation that already includes Samsung equipment. You retain familiar controls and avoid learning another smart-TV platform. That convenience is valuable, but it should not replace checking the actual S90F code, panel type and warranty in your market.

HDR and panel caution

Samsung’s S90 televisions generally emphasize HDR10+ rather than Dolby Vision. The precise S90F format list is market-dependent, so verify it against the official local specification and the devices you use. A buyer whose library depends on Dolby Vision should compare the LG C5 first rather than assuming the Samsung will decode the same signals.

When value changes the answer

The S90F may become the best choice when a local sale places it substantially below the C5 or BRAVIA 8 II while preserving the connections and warranty you need. No universal price is stated here because stock and promotions change by country. Compare the delivered price, return period and warranty—not only the sticker price.

HDR brightness and color volume

What the published S90H figure means

Tom’s Guide reported 1,104 nits of HDR brightness for its S90H review sample in 2026. That test used a 55-inch television, not the 65-inch model, so the figure must not be presented as a 65-inch laboratory result. Panel size, test window, picture mode, firmware and measurement method can all change the number you see.

Peak brightness is only one part of HDR impact. Sustained brightness, highlight size, tone mapping and the television’s ability to retain saturated color at high luminance also affect what you see. A television that measures brighter in a small test window may not look brighter in a full-screen scene.

Comparative evidence and its limits

RTINGS reports that the Samsung S90D is generally brighter in HDR and offers wider viewing angles and a wider color gamut than the LG C4, while the LG C4 supports Dolby Vision. Those are comparative test findings for the named models and tested configurations. They should not be converted into a universal ranking of the S90H against every C5, BRAVIA 8 II or S90F sold in every country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a meaningful showroom or home comparison, use the same HDR scene on each set, disable aggressive store modes, sit at your normal distance and inspect both bright highlights and shadow detail. Note whether one television clips detail, shifts color or raises black levels when viewed from the side.

HDR formats: Dolby Vision versus HDR10+

HDR10 is the baseline format found on many discs, consoles and streaming services. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ add scene- or frame-level guidance so the television can adjust tone mapping more dynamically. The practical choice is therefore about the content and players you own, not a claim that one logo is automatically superior.

  • Choose the LG C5 first if Dolby Vision support is important to your streaming service, disc player or console routine.
  • Consider the S90F if your sources are primarily HDR10 and HDR10+ and you prefer Samsung’s platform, provided the local specification matches.
  • Check the BRAVIA 8 II listing carefully for the exact HDR formats and gaming behavior offered in your country.

Use the television’s information panel or the player’s output screen after installation to confirm that the intended HDR format is actually being received. An app, cable, receiver or console setting can force a fallback mode even when the television supports more.

Gaming: ports, refresh rate and VRR

“Gaming OLED” is not a complete specification. Before buying, write down every device you will connect: current and previous consoles, gaming PC, soundbar or AV receiver, set-top box and capture card. Then verify the exact television manual for the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. HDMI 2.1 bandwidth: confirm which numbered inputs support the bandwidth needed for your target resolution and refresh rate.
  2. Refresh modes: check 4K at 120Hz first, then any 144Hz or 165Hz PC mode you actually plan to use. Do not assume that a headline maximum applies to every HDMI input.
  3. VRR standards: confirm the console’s required VRR implementation and whether the television supports the range at your chosen resolution.
  4. Latency and game mode: verify that game mode is available in the HDR formats you use and that enabling it does not disable a feature you need.
  5. Audio return: if a soundbar or receiver will use eARC, check which HDMI port provides it and whether that arrangement leaves enough high-bandwidth inputs for your consoles.

The C5 is the most straightforward all-round candidate in this group, the S90F is the natural Samsung gaming alternative and the BRAVIA 8 II deserves closer port-by-port checking when gaming is central. Exact 120/144/165Hz and HDMI figures are not established here for every regional SKU, so read the local specification before paying.

Motion handling, upscaling and movie presentation

OLED response time is naturally fast, but perceived motion quality still depends on processing. Film cadence, sports pans, subtitles over moving backgrounds and low-frame-rate streaming can expose differences between brands.

Sony’s BRAVIA 8 II is the specialist choice when processing and a film-focused presentation are your priorities. LG’s C5 is the compromise pick for a household that alternates between movies, television and games. Samsung’s S90F makes the most sense when you already prefer Samsung’s processing and controls or when its local price is compelling.

Upscaling deserves a home test if possible. Bring a familiar HD broadcast or older film and look for ringing around text, smeared fine detail, mosquito noise and unstable diagonal lines. A store’s perfect 4K demo cannot reveal how a television treats the sources you watch every day.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Viewing angles and reflections

OLED is generally well suited to seating spread across a room because black levels do not wash out in the same way as many LCD televisions when viewed off-axis. The exact panel and surface treatment still matter. RTINGS’ S90D-versus-C4 comparison found wider viewing angles for the Samsung in that test, but that result concerns those models and samples.

Reflections can dominate a bright living room. Inspect the screen with windows and lamps behind your seating position, not only in a dark showroom. A glossy surface can preserve perceived contrast in darkness yet show a distinct reflection in daylight. Curtains, lamp placement and the television’s angle may improve the result more than a small difference in peak-nit measurements.

Smart-TV software and daily usability

LG webOS

webOS is a major reason to choose the C5. It provides LG’s app environment and home-screen workflow, but app availability and catch-up services vary by country. Confirm that the services your household uses are present before buying, especially if you rely on a niche broadcaster.

Samsung’s platform

The S90F preserves Samsung’s familiar smart-TV experience. It is attractive to households already using Samsung accounts, remotes or connected devices, although the exact interface and bundled services can change through firmware and region.

Sony’s software

Check the BRAVIA 8 II’s local operating system, app catalogue, voice features and update policy against your market. A television can have excellent picture processing and still be inconvenient if it lacks a required app or has a remote layout your household dislikes.

For all three models, test the basics: speed from standby, input switching, HDMI device detection, subtitle controls, audio output selection and whether unwanted recommendations can be hidden. These details determine daily satisfaction more than a specification sheet.

Built-in sound and external audio

OLED televisions are thin, so built-in speakers cannot reproduce the scale and bass of a separate soundbar or AV system. Compare dialogue clarity at low volume and check the eARC port if you plan to add external audio.

Do not select among these televisions solely by a quoted speaker wattage. Room layout, speaker direction, processing modes and your seating distance affect intelligibility. If a soundbar will sit on furniture rather than a wall, measure the television stand height so it does not block the lower edge of the screen.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Price, stock and warranty

No single “current price” applies to these televisions worldwide. Retail promotions, taxes, panel supply and clearance stock can change the ranking from week to week. Compare the complete delivered cost in your currency, including shipping, installation, recycling fees and any extended coverage.

  • Record the full model code and screen size from the retailer’s invoice.
  • Confirm that the warranty is valid in your country and whether it is handled by the manufacturer or the seller.
  • Check the return window for dead pixels, panel damage and uniformity concerns.
  • Verify that the box contains the intended stand, remote and power accessories for your region.
  • Ask whether the television is new stock, a display unit or refurbished.

Stock status is especially important for the S90H itself. If the reference model is discounted, compare its warranty and remaining software support with the newer S90F before treating the lower price as a bargain.

Regional SKU and panel checklist

Before ordering any 65-inch OLED, open the manufacturer’s local product page and match these details to the seller’s listing:

  • Complete model suffix, tuner standard and power plug
  • Panel type and stated refresh capability
  • Number and bandwidth of HDMI inputs
  • Supported HDR formats and gaming modes
  • Stand dimensions, weight and wall-mount pattern
  • Wireless standards, Ethernet and optical-audio availability
  • Warranty length, exclusions and service territory

Do not infer a VESA pattern or load requirement from the screen size alone. A 65-inch wall mount must match the exact television’s VESA spacing and be rated above the set’s installed weight. Confirm both measurements in the television manual before buying a mount.

Which alternative fits your room?

Choose the LG C5 when

  • You want one television for films, television, console games and PC play.
  • Dolby Vision matters to your streaming or disc collection.
  • You prefer webOS and want a broadly balanced OLED package.
  • You need a strong default recommendation without optimizing for one narrow use.

Choose the Sony BRAVIA 8 II when

  • Your priority is film presentation, motion handling and upscaling.
  • You watch substantial HD, broadcast or compressed content.
  • You are willing to verify gaming ports and HDR behavior carefully rather than assuming the headline specifications.

Choose the Samsung S90F when

  • You want to stay inside Samsung’s ecosystem and interface.
  • The local S90F price is materially better than the C5 or BRAVIA 8 II.
  • Your sources fit Samsung’s HDR strategy and you do not require Dolby Vision.
  • You prefer a newer S90-series model over buying older S90H stock.

Buying and setup checklist

  1. Photograph or copy the exact model code from the listing before checkout.
  2. Download the local manual and verify HDMI, HDR, VRR, stand and VESA details.
  3. List every source device and reserve HDMI inputs for the highest-bandwidth equipment first.
  4. Measure the cabinet or wall, viewing distance and the soundbar clearance.
  5. At delivery, inspect the box before signing and photograph any damage.
  6. Run the television’s panel and firmware setup, then confirm that each source reports the expected resolution, refresh rate and HDR mode.
  7. Watch familiar dark, bright, fast-moving and low-quality content before the return window closes.

Final verdict

For most people replacing a Samsung S90H 65-inch OLED, buy the LG C5 65-inch OLED if its local specification and price meet your needs. Its Dolby Vision support, webOS and balanced feature set make it the least compromised alternative. Pick the Sony BRAVIA 8 II for a film-first room where processing and cinematic motion are decisive. Pick the Samsung S90F when same-brand continuity, Samsung’s interface or a strong local deal outweighs the value of switching platforms.

Whichever model you choose, verify the regional SKU, HDMI and HDR details, warranty and wall-mount requirements. Those checks matter more than assuming that every 65-inch television carrying the same family name is identical.
