Best overall alternative: LG Immersive Quad Suite 7 Pro. Its 9.1.6 layout uses four satellite speakers and delivers stronger surround coverage and a wider stereo stage than the Samsung HW-Q990H in RTINGS’ comparison. Choose the Samsung instead when DTS support, HDMI 2.1 passthrough, optical input, or Samsung-TV integration matters more.
Other buyers have different priorities. Sonos Arc Ultra is the better modular choice for simple installation and staged upgrades. Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 is the strongest standalone and gaming-oriented option because it has a dedicated HDMI 2.1 input with 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM. LG Immersive Suite 5 Pro is a close-performing package, while Samsung HW-Q990D can be the value pick when remaining stock is heavily discounted.
What the Samsung HW-Q990H delivers
The HW-Q990H is a complete premium home-theater package rather than a single soundbar. It combines a main bar, wireless subwoofer and wireless rear speakers in an 11.1.4-channel configuration. The four-number layout indicates a large front and surround bed, a dedicated subwoofer channel, and four height channels for Dolby Atmos effects.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connectivity is unusually broad for a packaged soundbar system: HDMI eARC, two HDMI 2.1 inputs, optical, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.3, AirPlay 2 and Google Cast. Audio-format support includes Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Eclipsa Audio. That combination lets the bar serve as a switcher for game consoles and streaming devices instead of relying entirely on the television’s HDMI ports.
Samsung says its flagship bar introduces “Sound Elevation,” intended to lift dialogue toward the center of the screen. That is a manufacturer description, not an independent measurement, but it explains the company’s emphasis on screen-matched speech.
An alternative therefore needs to be judged on more than Atmos branding. Rear-speaker coverage, height-channel placement, codec support, HDMI gaming features, room layout, upgrade plans and current stock can all change the right choice.

LG Immersive Quad Suite 7 Pro: the closest direct replacement
The Quad Suite 7 Pro is the most direct answer for someone who wants a complete Atmos package with more extensive rear coverage. Its 9.1.6 design uses four satellites, compared with the Q990H’s two rear speakers. RTINGS reports better surround performance and a wider stereo soundstage for the LG system.
Why its layout matters
Four satellites can place effects around more positions in the room and provide more opportunities for side-to-side movement in a soundtrack. This does not guarantee a better result in every room: walls, sofa placement, ceiling height and speaker height still determine how convincing Atmos sounds. In a room where the rear speakers can be placed symmetrically behind the seating position, the Quad Suite 7 Pro has the strongest case.
Where Samsung remains stronger
The LG system does not support DTS. If your disc collection, game console or media player regularly outputs DTS or DTS:X, the Samsung package is the safer choice. Samsung also offers HDMI input and passthrough capabilities that let the soundbar act as a central connection point for sources. That is useful when a television has too few HDMI ports or when a console’s video features must pass through the bar.
Who should buy it
- Choose the Quad Suite 7 Pro when rear immersion is your first priority.
- Choose the Q990H when DTS playback or HDMI switching is essential.
- Confirm the exact regional model name, included speakers, price and stock before ordering; product naming and availability can differ by market.
Sonos Arc Ultra: the modular alternative
Arc Ultra is designed around a different ownership model. It works as a solo soundbar and can later be expanded with wireless surrounds and a dedicated subwoofer. That makes it attractive when you are moving, renting, uncertain about speaker placement, or unable to buy a full package at once.

Performance with and without add-ons
What Hi-Fi describes an impressive Atmos effect from Arc Ultra by itself. RTINGS’ testing of the Sonos Ultimate Immersive Set, which adds surrounds and a subwoofer, found a wider soundstage and punchier bass than the HW-Q990H. Those findings apply to the complete Sonos set, not automatically to a solo Arc Ultra.
Trade-offs to understand
Sonos gives up some format support and sound-customization options compared with Samsung. The practical question is whether your sources need those formats or controls. If most listening comes from mainstream television and streaming apps, the simpler Sonos approach may be sufficient. If you use varied disc formats, multiple physical sources or want extensive input flexibility, Samsung’s feature set is more accommodating.
Best fit
Pick Arc Ultra when installation simplicity, multiroom integration and a gradual upgrade path matter more than buying every speaker on day one. Budget for the surrounds and subwoofer if your end goal is comparable full-room coverage; the solo bar cannot reproduce the same rear-channel field as a complete package.
Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9: best for gaming or a no-rear-speaker room
The BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 is the clearest alternative for buyers who specifically want a standalone bar. What Hi-Fi reports crisp, precise sound, impressive standalone Atmos delivery and deep bass for a soundbar. Wireless surrounds and a subwoofer can be added later.
Gaming connections
Bar 9 includes a dedicated HDMI 2.1 input and supports 4K/120Hz, variable refresh rate (VRR) and auto low-latency mode (ALLM). Those features are designed for current consoles and gaming PCs that need high-frame-rate video, tear reduction and automatic low-latency switching. Connect the source that needs those functions to the HDMI 2.1 input, then verify that the television and cable also support the desired mode.
What it cannot replace
A standalone bar projects sound from the front of the room. Even with virtual processing, it will not reproduce the same out-of-box rear-channel coverage as the HW-Q990H. Choose it when a sofa is against a wall, power outlets are unavailable behind the seating area, or visible rear speakers are unacceptable. Add the optional surrounds later if the room changes.
LG Immersive Suite 5 Pro: a close-performing package
RTINGS reports that the Immersive Suite 5 Pro and HW-Q990H are closely matched in sound tests. Both are described as having balanced frequency response, strong center performance and wide soundstages. This makes the LG a sensible alternative when its local price or availability is better.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

The Q990H has the broader feature set. Its 4K/120Hz HDMI passthrough, DTS support and optical input are specifically identified as advantages over the LG system. For a television-centered streaming setup those differences may never matter; for a mixed setup with legacy optical equipment, DTS sources or console video routed through the bar, they can be decisive.

LG S95TR: another full surround option
LG lists the S95TR as a 9.1.5 system with triple front and dual rear channels. LG also lists Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support and describes six included channels. Its architecture differs from both the Q990H and Quad Suite 7 Pro, so channel counts should not be treated as a direct quality score.
Consider S95TR when you want a complete LG package with rear speakers and support for both major object-based formats. Compare the exact box contents and regional specification before purchase, especially if the number or type of included speakers is important to your installation.
Samsung HW-Q990D: the stock-dependent value pick
The HW-Q990D is the previous-generation Samsung flagship. RTINGS says it can offer similar performance to the Q990H at a greatly discounted price. That makes it worth checking when retailers are clearing inventory.
Because the discount depends on remaining stock, do not assume every listing is a bargain. Check that the box is new, that the warranty applies in your country, and that the seller identifies the exact model rather than mixing Q990D and Q990H specifications. A small price gap may favor the newer model; a large, verified discount can make the Q990D the better value.
Choose by room and installation constraints
You can place speakers behind the sofa
Start with the LG Immersive Quad Suite 7 Pro if maximum surround envelopment is the goal. Its four satellites and reported surround advantage make it the leading direct alternative. The Q990H remains attractive if your sources require DTS or you need HDMI passthrough.
The sofa is against a wall
A rear-speaker package may not have enough distance to create a convincing sound field. Sony Bar 9 or a solo Arc Ultra avoids awkward speaker stands and cables. If you later move the sofa or relocate, both systems can be expanded with wireless speakers.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
You want one purchase now and upgrades later
Arc Ultra and Bar 9 both support a staged path by adding surrounds and a subwoofer later. This can reduce initial cost and installation effort, but compare the eventual complete-system price rather than only the bar’s entry price.
You have a Samsung television
The Q990H has the clearest documented integration advantage: compatible Samsung TVs can use wireless Dolby Atmos. Confirm television compatibility rather than assuming every Samsung model supports the feature. Other systems can still connect over standard HDMI eARC, but the specific wireless-TV function is a Samsung pairing feature.
Gaming and HDMI 2.1: what to check
Do not equate “supports HDMI 2.1” with identical gaming behavior. Look for the feature you actually need: a dedicated HDMI 2.1 input, 4K/120Hz pass-through, VRR and ALLM.
- Best documented gaming feature set: Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 has a dedicated HDMI 2.1 input with 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM.
- Best hub-style package: HW-Q990H has two HDMI 2.1 inputs and passthrough, useful when the bar must connect multiple sources.
- Check before buying: LG alternatives in the supplied specifications are not documented with the same complete list of gaming features, so verify the regional manual and port specification.
For any setup, use certified cables suitable for the video mode, connect the console to a port that supports the required bandwidth, and confirm the television reports 4K/120Hz or VRR after setup. If a console drops to 60Hz, test a direct connection to the television to identify whether the bar or cable is limiting the signal.
Codec and content compatibility
Dolby Atmos is not the only format that matters. The Q990H supports Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and Eclipsa Audio. The Quad Suite 7 Pro does not support DTS, while the LG S95TR is listed with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Sonos offers fewer supported formats than Samsung, according to RTINGS and What Hi-Fi.
Make an inventory before choosing: streaming services, game consoles, Blu-ray players, broadcast boxes and downloaded files can all output different formats. If DTS appears anywhere in that chain, avoid assuming a replacement will decode or pass it through. A missing codec can result in stereo output, transcoding by the source device, or no sound until settings are changed.
Buying and setup checklist
- Measure the room. Mark the television, seating position and possible rear-speaker locations. Confirm that satellites will not be blocked by furniture.
- List your sources. Include consoles, disc players, set-top boxes, optical devices and wireless music services.
- Record required formats. Note whether you need Dolby Atmos only, DTS:X, Eclipsa Audio or legacy optical playback.
- Count HDMI ports. Determine whether the television has enough inputs or whether the soundbar must act as a switcher.
- Decide on the upgrade path. For Arc Ultra and Bar 9, price the future surrounds and subwoofer before choosing a staged setup.
- Verify regional details. Confirm model naming, included speakers, warranty, power requirements, retailer stock and return policy.
- Calibrate after placement. Run the system’s room setup, then listen from the main seat with dialogue-heavy content and an Atmos scene. Recheck rear-speaker levels if effects seem to come from one side.
Common pitfalls and fixes
Buying by channel number alone
A higher channel figure does not guarantee better results. Speaker placement, room geometry and processing determine whether height and rear effects reach the listener. Use channel count as a layout description, not a universal ranking.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Assuming every Atmos source is identical
Atmos can arrive through different codecs and connection paths. Check the source output, television passthrough settings and eARC connection when the bar reports only PCM or stereo.
Ignoring rear-speaker logistics
Wireless rear speakers still need power and suitable placement. Measure outlet locations and walking paths before selecting a package with satellites.
Confusing a discounted older model with the current one
Q990D listings may be mixed with Q990H descriptions during clearance sales. Match the model number on the carton and specification sheet, and verify warranty coverage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesExpecting a standalone bar to equal a complete package
Bar 9 and solo Arc Ultra can create convincing front-stage Atmos effects, but neither supplies the same physical rear-channel coverage as a package that includes surround speakers. Add the optional speakers if full-room immersion is the goal.
Which alternative should you buy?
Buy the LG Immersive Quad Suite 7 Pro for the most convincing direct replacement when four satellites, stronger surround performance and a wider stage matter more than DTS. Buy the Sonos Arc Ultra when you value a clean installation, multiroom integration and the ability to expand over time. Buy the Sony BRAVIA Theatre Bar 9 for a gaming-focused room that needs 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM through a dedicated HDMI 2.1 input, or where rear speakers are impractical.
The LG Immersive Suite 5 Pro is the sensible close-match alternative when discounted, while the LG S95TR suits buyers seeking an LG package with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Check the Samsung HW-Q990D when clearance pricing is substantially below the Q990H and the seller provides a proper warranty.
Keep the Samsung HW-Q990H if you need its combination of DTS, Eclipsa Audio, two HDMI 2.1 inputs, optical connectivity and Samsung-TV wireless Atmos integration. No alternative wins every category; the right choice is the one whose speaker layout and connectivity match your room and sources.
