The best wired alternative is the HyperX Cloud III. It keeps the dependable cable connection, adds both USB and 3.5 mm options, and officially supports PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Mac and mobile. The best wireless alternative is the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5X Wireless if you want 2.4 GHz wireless, Bluetooth 5.3 and Xbox compatibility. Choose the Kraken V4 X itself when a single USB-C-to-USB-A cable that moves between a computer, console and phone is more useful than wireless freedom.
At a glance: which headset should replace the Kraken V4 X?
| Headset | Connection | Platforms stated by the manufacturer | Microphone | Battery | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HyperX Cloud III | Wired USB and 3.5 mm | PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Mac and mobile | 10 mm noise-cancelling microphone | Not applicable | Reliable, broad-compatibility wired gaming |
| SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5X Wireless | 2.4 GHz wireless and Bluetooth 5.3 | PC and Xbox/PlayStation support for the 5X model | Bidirectional noise-cancelling microphone | Up to 60 hours for the Nova 5 family | Wireless PC and console play, especially Xbox |
| Razer Kraken V4 X | Convertible USB-C and USB-A cable | PC, consoles and phones; Razer’s September 3, 2026 support specification records Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility | Not stated in the supplied specification | Not applicable | One plug-and-play wired headset for several devices |
The two alternatives solve different problems rather than offering identical feature sets. Cloud III is the closest replacement if you want a cable and do not want to manage charging. Nova 5X is the better fit when the cable itself is the inconvenience, provided you buy the Xbox-compatible 5X version rather than assuming every Nova 5 model works the same way.
What the Kraken V4 X does well
The Kraken V4 X is a wired headset built around a convertible USB-C and USB-A cable. That arrangement lets one headset move among a USB-C phone, a USB-A computer and compatible console ports without carrying a separate wireless transmitter or charging cable. Razer lists customized dynamic 40 mm drivers, a 20 Hz–20 kHz frequency response, 32 ohm impedance and 96 dB sensitivity. Its listed US price is US$79.99; treat that as Razer’s listed figure in 2026, not a guaranteed store price.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRazer’s support page was updated September 3, 2026 and records Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility. That date matters because console support can change with firmware, adapters and console revisions. The USB-C/USB-A design is particularly useful for households that alternate between a desktop, a laptop and handheld play. It also avoids the two wireless failure points that wired buyers most often encounter: a depleted battery and a misplaced or unpaired dongle.
#1 Best Overall
- Comfort is King: Comfort’s in the Cloud III’s DNA. Built for gamers who can’t have an uncomfortable headset ruin the flow of their full-combo, disrupt their speedrun, or knocking them out of the zone.
- Audio Tuned for Your Entertainment: Angled 53mm drivers have been tuned by HyperX audio engineers to provide the optimal listening experience that accents the dynamic sounds of gaming.
- Upgraded Microphone for Clarity and Accuracy: Captures high-quality audio for clear voice chat and calls. The mic is noise-cancelling and features a built-in mesh filter to omit disruptive sounds and LED mic mute indicator lets you know when you’re muted.
- Durability, for the Toughest of Battles: The headset is flexible and features an aluminum frame so it’s resilient against travel, accidents, mishaps, and your ‘level-headed’ reactions to losses and defeat screens.
The trade-off is physical cable management. A wired headset keeps working as long as the connector, port and cable are sound, but the cable can catch on a desk or controller. It also does not provide the room-to-room freedom of a wireless model. Those are the reasons to consider the alternatives below.
HyperX Cloud III: the closest wired replacement
Why it is the direct alternative
HyperX positions the Cloud III as an evolution of its Cloud II, emphasizing comfort, sound quality and durability. For a Kraken V4 X buyer, the important distinction is practical: Cloud III combines USB and 3.5 mm wired connections and has an unusually broad published platform list. HyperX states compatibility with PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Mac and mobile.
The headset uses angled 53 mm drivers and a 10 mm noise-cancelling microphone. The larger driver diameter is a specification, not a guarantee of better sound than a 40 mm design; tuning, enclosure, fit and software matter just as much. The angled layout is intended to position the drivers relative to the ears rather than pointing them straight inward.

- HyperX Dual Chamber Drivers for more distinction and less distortion
- Signature award winning HyperX comfort
- Durable aluminum frame with expanded headband
- Detachable braided cable with convenient in line audio control
Connection choices
- USB: Use the USB connection on a PC or another device that accepts the headset’s USB control path. This is the most convenient route when you want a single digital connection for game audio and voice chat.
- 3.5 mm: Use the analog connection with a controller, handheld or phone that has a compatible headset jack. This is useful when console USB behavior is restrictive or when you want the headset connected directly to a controller.
- No battery: Cloud III has no wireless battery to charge. It will not provide wireless range, but it also cannot stop working because its battery is empty.
Comfort for long sessions
HyperX specifies memory foam in the headband and ear cushions. Memory foam can reduce pressure points during long sessions, although the result depends on head size, glasses and how firmly the headband clamps. If you are replacing a headset because your ears touch the drivers or the pads become hot, try the Cloud III with your normal glasses and play posture before judging comfort.
Who should buy it
Choose Cloud III when your priority order is broad console coverage, a reliable cable, USB/3.5 mm flexibility and no charging routine. It is the sensible pick for a family headset that may be moved between Xbox, PlayStation, Switch and computer. Do not choose it expecting wireless freedom: all of its stated connections are wired.
SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5X Wireless: the best wireless fit
Why the “5X” designation matters
The Arctis Nova 5X Wireless is the strongest wireless match for someone who plays on PC and consoles, particularly Xbox. SteelSeries lists PC and Xbox/PlayStation support for the 5X model. Console wireless support is model-specific, so confirm that the product name includes the X before ordering for Xbox. A similarly named headset from the same family should not be assumed to have identical console compatibility.

Wireless connections and battery
GamesRadar reports 2.4 GHz wireless and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity for the Nova 5 family. The 2.4 GHz link is the connection to use for low-latency game audio through the appropriate wireless hardware; Bluetooth is useful for a phone or other Bluetooth source. GamesRadar lists up to 60 hours of battery life for the Nova 5 family. “Up to” is a maximum claim under stated test conditions, so volume, microphone use, wireless mode and other settings can reduce the runtime you experience.

Microphone and drivers
The Nova 5 family is reported with 40 mm drivers and a bidirectional noise-cancelling microphone. Driver diameter is close to the Kraken V4 X’s 40 mm figure, but that does not make the two headsets sound identical. Microphone pickup pattern, noise processing, fit and the game’s own chat mix have more practical impact than the diameter number alone.
Who should buy it
Pick Nova 5X when walking away from the desk, avoiding a controller cable or switching between 2.4 GHz and Bluetooth is worth maintaining a battery. It is especially attractive for Xbox players who want a wireless connection without giving up PC use. Pick Cloud III instead if you want the fewest components, zero charging and the widest explicitly stated platform list, including Nintendo Switch and mobile.

Use this table to match a requirement, not to rank driver sizes. A 53 mm driver is not automatically superior to a 40 mm driver, and a noise-cancelling microphone claim does not describe how well your voice will sound in every room. The useful distinctions are connection type, confirmed platform support, microphone design and whether you can accept a battery.
Choose by platform
PC
All three headsets are aimed at PC use. Cloud III is the simplest if you want to connect by USB or 3.5 mm and never think about wireless pairing. Nova 5X makes more sense if you want 2.4 GHz for gaming and Bluetooth for a second device. The Kraken V4 X is convenient when your PC has both USB-A and USB-C accessories and you want to reuse the same cable elsewhere.
Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One
Cloud III is explicitly listed for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One through its wired connections. Nova 5X is the wireless choice, but the X suffix is important because SteelSeries’ model-specific console support determines whether the wireless hardware is intended for Xbox. If you select the wrong variant, Bluetooth alone should not be treated as a substitute for the console’s supported wireless path.

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
Cloud III is explicitly listed for PS4 and PS5. SteelSeries lists PC and Xbox/PlayStation support for the Nova 5X model, so verify the exact console mode and included wireless hardware for your PlayStation setup. The Kraken V4 X’s wired USB-C/USB-A approach is the least dependent on console-specific wireless licensing.
Nintendo Switch and Switch 2
HyperX lists Nintendo Switch support for Cloud III. Razer’s support specification, updated September 3, 2026, records Switch 2 compatibility for the Kraken V4 X. The supplied Nova 5X information does not establish Nintendo Switch support, so do not buy it for Switch unless the current product documentation for the exact package confirms it.
Phones, tablets and Mac
Cloud III’s published list includes Mac and mobile. The Kraken V4 X is designed to move to phones through its convertible cable, subject to the phone having a compatible USB port and supporting headset audio. Nova 5X’s Bluetooth 5.3 connection is the natural phone option, while 2.4 GHz remains the gaming-oriented link.

Cloud III on a PC
- Connect the headset using its USB connection when you want a direct digital path, or connect the 3.5 mm plug to the computer’s combined headset jack.
- Open the operating system’s sound settings and select the Cloud III as both output and microphone when it appears as a USB device.
- In the game’s audio menu, choose the same output and input devices rather than leaving the game on a previously selected monitor or webcam.
- Record a short voice test and lower the microphone level if teammates hear clipping or room noise.
Cloud III with a console or controller
- For a controller connection, insert the 3.5 mm plug fully into the controller headset jack.
- For a console USB connection, use the headset’s USB path and select it in the console’s audio-accessory settings if the console asks you to choose an output.
- Start a party-chat test with one friend before a match. If game audio works but chat does not, check the console’s chat mixer and input-device selection rather than replacing the headset.
Nova 5X on PC or console
- Confirm the packaging and model name identify the 5X version before attempting Xbox wireless setup.
- Connect the supplied 2.4 GHz wireless hardware to the target device using the documented port and set the headset to the matching wireless mode.
- For a phone or second device, pair through Bluetooth 5.3 and select the headset as the phone’s call and media device.
- Charge the headset before a long session. Keep the battery indicator visible in your usual software so an “up to 60 hours” claim does not become an unexpected shutdown during play.
Kraken V4 X on mixed devices
- Use USB-C on a compatible phone, handheld or newer computer.
- Use the USB-A side on a conventional desktop or console USB port.
- Confirm the device recognizes both playback and microphone audio, then adjust the game’s chat mixer.
- When changing devices, disconnect the cable cleanly and inspect the connector for lint or looseness if audio cuts out.
Common problems and practical fixes
There is sound but no microphone input
- Check that the microphone is fully extended or connected, depending on the headset design.
- In the operating system or console privacy settings, allow microphone access for the game or chat app.
- Confirm the headset is selected as the input device; a laptop webcam microphone can remain selected after a headset is connected.
- On a 3.5 mm connection, push the plug completely into the combined headset jack. Partial insertion can produce playback without reliable microphone contact.
The wireless headset will not connect
- Confirm that the wireless hardware is connected to the intended device and that the headset is in 2.4 GHz mode rather than Bluetooth mode.
- On Xbox, re-check that the model is Nova 5X, not another Nova 5 variant.
- Move the wireless hardware away from crowded hubs and metal obstructions, then retry pairing.
- Charge the headset before diagnosing a range or pairing issue; a critically low battery can mimic a connection fault.
Audio sounds quiet or unbalanced
- Raise the device output and in-game volume separately; a low chat mixer setting can make voice seem missing while game audio is normal.
- Reseat the cable or wireless hardware and test another port.
- Check ear-cup positioning. A poor seal changes bass and perceived loudness more than a driver-size comparison suggests.
The headset is uncomfortable
- Adjust the headband so the ear cushions surround the ears instead of pressing on them.
- Wear the headset with your normal glasses and posture; comfort claims cannot account for every head shape.
- Take short breaks during long sessions, especially if heat or clamp pressure builds up.
How to decide in five minutes
- Need Xbox wireless? Start with Nova 5X and verify the X designation.
- Need Switch, mobile and several consoles from one wired headset? Start with Cloud III because its published compatibility list is the broadest of the alternatives.
- Need one cable that changes between USB-C and USB-A devices? Keep the Kraken V4 X on the shortlist.
- Do you dislike charging? Choose Cloud III or Kraken V4 X; both are wired.
- Do you value walking around or Bluetooth? Choose Nova 5X, accepting the battery and model-variant checks.
- Are you comparing sound quality by driver diameter? Stop there and compare fit, microphone design, connection reliability and your platform requirements first.
What to check before ordering
- Confirm the exact console generation and model support on the manufacturer’s current page.
- For Xbox wireless, verify the product name says Nova 5X.
- Check whether your phone or handheld has USB-C, a 3.5 mm jack or neither.
- Decide whether you want USB controls and digital audio, analog controller connection, or wireless modes.
- Compare the current checkout price with the Kraken V4 X’s US$79.99 listed price from Razer in 2026; the alternatives’ current prices are not established here and may change with sales.
- Measure your priorities in this order: platform support, connection reliability, microphone behavior, comfort and then driver specifications.
Verdict
For most people replacing the Kraken V4 X without changing how they play, the HyperX Cloud III is the safest recommendation: it remains wired, adds USB and 3.5 mm flexibility, and has the clearest broad-platform coverage. The SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5X Wireless is the better answer when wireless movement, Bluetooth and Xbox support justify charging and variant checking. The Kraken V4 X still makes sense when its convertible USB-C/USB-A cable is the feature you use most.
