For most buyers, Sonus faber Duetto is the closest premium alternative to the Naim Mu-so Utopia. It gives you a genuine left-right stereo stage, HDMI ARC/eARC, phono, optical, major streaming platforms and a $3,999-per-pair price. Choose Devialet Gold Phantom stereo instead if maximum physical impact is the priority; choose McIntosh RS250 if TV, vinyl, Ethernet and subwoofer connections matter most; and choose Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin if you want a much simpler one-box system near $800.
The right choice depends less on headline wattage than on architecture. The Mu-so Utopia is a 720-watt, 15-driver, Dolby Atmos-compatible all-in-one. Duetto and Gold Phantom are stereo pairs, while RS250 and Zeppelin put both channels in one cabinet. The sections below separate those designs, explain the input and streaming differences, and show which compromise each alternative makes.
At a glance: which Mu-so Utopia alternative fits you?
| System | Configuration | Published power/output | Inputs and streaming highlights | Published US price | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Naim Mu-so Utopia | Single all-in-one cabinet | 720 W; 109 dB peak SPL; 30 Hz–20 kHz (±3 dB); 25 Hz low-frequency point (−6 dB) | Dolby Atmos compatibility; Naim/Focal processing and room adaptation | Launch price not stated here | One premium chassis, high output and Dolby Atmos |
| Sonus faber Duetto | Two active speakers | 100 W Class AB for tweeters and 250 W Class D for mid/woofers per speaker; 105 dB SPL at 1 m; 37 Hz–30 kHz | AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Roon Ready, Bluetooth aptX HD, RCA line/phono, optical, HDMI ARC/eARC and subwoofer output | $3,999 per pair | True stereo, analog inputs and furniture-grade design |
| Devialet Gold Phantom stereo | Two compact spherical speakers | 2 × 4,500 W peak amplification; 111 dB SPL at 1 m | Wi-Fi, AirPlay, Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, optical and UPnP | $2,990 per pair | Very high output and deep physical impact from compact cabinets |
| McIntosh RS250 | Single stand-alone stereo system | 650 W total | AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Chromecast, Roon Ready, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, HDMI ARC, optical, moving-magnet phono, auxiliary, headphone and subwoofer connections | Current US MSRP not published; dealer quote required | One component for streaming, television, vinyl and wired networking |
| Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin | Single speaker | 35 Hz–24 kHz response specification; power rating not stated here | AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Bluetooth, and the Bowers & Wilkins Music app with Deezer, Qobuz and TIDAL | $799 | Lower-cost, simple one-box listening |
Power figures are not directly interchangeable: the Mu-so and RS250 figures are system totals, Gold Phantom’s figure is peak amplification for a pair, and Duetto gives per-speaker amplifier ratings. SPL is a maximum-output indication rather than a promise of equal loudness in every room.

What the Mu-so Utopia sets as the benchmark
Naim describes Mu-so Utopia as its most sophisticated all-in-one system. Its reference specification combines 720 watts, 15 speaker drivers and Dolby Atmos compatibility in one enclosure. Naim lists a 30 Hz–20 kHz frequency response within ±3 dB, a 25 Hz low-frequency point at −6 dB and a 109 dB peak sound-pressure level. Those numbers explain why it is difficult to replace with a cheaper lifestyle speaker: the target is not merely wireless playback, but unusually high output, wide bandwidth and cinema-oriented processing from a single cabinet.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The one-box format also has practical value. There is no second speaker to position, no inter-speaker wireless link to troubleshoot and no requirement for a symmetrical listening position. Processing associated with Naim and Focal is part of the appeal for listeners who want the system to adapt its presentation to a room rather than rely solely on physical placement. In exchange, a single cabinet cannot create the same left-right separation as two speakers placed several feet apart.
Use the Mu-so as the reference when Dolby Atmos, room adaptation and a premium single-chassis installation are more important than adding a turntable directly or building a conventional stereo stage. If those priorities are different, one of the alternatives below may provide a better match even when its headline wattage is lower.
Sonus faber Duetto: the closest true-stereo substitute
What you get
Duetto is an active two-speaker system priced at $3,999 per pair on Sonus faber’s 2026 wireless-collection page. Each speaker uses a 100 W Class AB amplifier for its tweeter and a 250 W Class D amplifier for its midrange and woofer. The published response is 37 Hz–30 kHz, and maximum output is 105 dB SPL at 1 meter.
Those specifications describe a different goal from the Mu-so. Duetto uses two cabinets to establish real stereo separation, so instruments can occupy a wider and more stable stage when the speakers are positioned correctly. Its response does not extend as low on paper as the Mu-so’s 25 Hz low-frequency point, but the separate enclosures can make bass, vocals and ambient information easier to place across the room.
Connections and services
Duetto has the broadest input mix in this shortlist. You get RCA line/phono, optical, HDMI ARC/eARC and a subwoofer output, as well as Bluetooth aptX HD. Network playback includes AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect and Roon Ready certification. That combination covers a turntable with a suitable phono output, a television, a legacy digital source, a subwoofer and the major phone or computer streaming methods without an external hub.
Who should choose it
Choose Duetto when stereo imaging and physical inputs matter as much as wireless convenience. It is particularly suitable for a living room where the speakers can sit on separate shelves or stands with a clear line between them. It is also the most convincing alternative for someone who regards the Mu-so as a premium music system first but wants a more traditional left-right presentation.
Trade-offs
Two cabinets require more planning than the Mu-so or Zeppelin. You need suitable locations, nearby power for both speakers and enough space to preserve symmetry. The $3,999 figure is for the pair, not one speaker, and although it is below the Mu-so Utopia’s launch price, it remains a premium purchase. Duetto also does not provide the Mu-so’s stated Dolby Atmos compatibility, so it is not the choice for a single-box home-cinema presentation.

Devialet Gold Phantom stereo: maximum compact impact
Output and design
Devialet’s US page lists a $2,990 price for a stereo pair. The pair is specified at 2 × 4,500 W peak amplification and 111 dB SPL at 1 meter, the highest output figure in this comparison. The spherical cabinets are physically compact but designed to deliver forceful, room-filling sound, making them the output-first choice for listeners who want bass impact without installing large conventional speakers.
Streaming and wired sources
Gold Phantom supports Wi-Fi, AirPlay, Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, optical and UPnP. That is enough for network streaming, phones, computers and a television or streamer with an optical output. The cited specifications do not list HDMI ARC/eARC, a phono input, a subwoofer output or Chromecast, so buyers who need those connections should select another system or budget for additional equipment.
When the pair makes sense
The stereo pair is a good fit for a modern room where visual design and high sound pressure are central. Two speakers can provide more width than one Gold Phantom, while the compact spherical form gives you more placement flexibility than many large floorstanding systems. The $2,990 price applies to two speakers; comparing it with a single-box price without accounting for that difference will produce the wrong value judgment.
Trade-offs
Gold Phantom is not a conventional component stack. Its distinctive appearance, limited cited physical-input set and reliance on network or optical sources make it a different proposition from Duetto or RS250. It also lacks the Mu-so’s stated Dolby Atmos compatibility in the supplied specifications. Pick it for impact and compactness, not for the widest selection of analog connections.
McIntosh RS250: the connectivity specialist
One component for several systems
McIntosh positions RS250 as a stand-alone stereo wireless system with 650 watts of total power. It is the most complete source hub in this group: you can connect a television through HDMI ARC, a turntable through its moving-magnet phono input, a legacy digital source through optical, an analog source through auxiliary, headphones for private listening and a subwoofer for additional low-frequency output.
For network playback, RS250 supports Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Chromecast, Roon Ready, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Ethernet. Ethernet is important if the system will live in a location with unreliable wireless coverage or if you prefer to keep a fixed audio component on a wired network. The combination of HDMI and phono is unusual in a single premium wireless system and is the reason RS250 can replace several separate boxes.
Best use cases
Choose RS250 when the system has to serve a television, vinyl collection and streaming services without changing inputs or adding a separate preamplifier. It is also the sensible option for listeners who want classic McIntosh styling in a compact format but still need a headphone connection and a subwoofer path.

Price and warranty diligence
McIntosh’s US product page directs buyers to dealers rather than publishing a current US MSRP, so obtain a written quote and confirm stock before treating RS250 as a fixed-price alternative. McIntosh states that new RS250 units may be sold online only by specifically authorized US dealers. Purchases from unauthorized sellers or used units can void the manufacturer warranty. Verify the dealer’s authorization and the warranty terms on the invoice, especially when a discounted listing appears substantially below normal dealer pricing.

Trade-offs
RS250 is a single cabinet, so it cannot create the same physical stereo spacing as Duetto or a correctly placed Gold Phantom pair. Its 650-watt total is also not directly comparable with Gold Phantom’s 4,500-watt-per-speaker peak figure; the amplifier specifications use different measurement conventions. RS250 is about integration and source flexibility, not winning a headline-output contest.
Bowers & Wilkins Zeppelin: the affordable one-box choice
What the $799 system covers
The Bowers & Wilkins US page lists Zeppelin at $799. It is a single speaker with a published 35 Hz–24 kHz frequency-response specification. Wireless playback includes AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and Bluetooth. The Bowers & Wilkins Music app adds Deezer, Qobuz and TIDAL support, giving mainstream services a straightforward route into the system.
Why it is a different class of alternative
Zeppelin is not a lower-priced version of the Mu-so Utopia’s performance envelope. The cited material does not give a comparable total-power or maximum-SPL figure, and Zeppelin does not provide the HDMI ARC/eARC and phono feature set listed for Duetto or RS250. Its strength is simplicity: one cabinet, a familiar app ecosystem and a price far below the flagship options.
Choose Zeppelin for a bedroom, office, apartment or secondary living space where a single wireless speaker is enough and the budget is close to $800. It is also a sensible way to avoid paying for inputs and output capability you will not use. Choose a different system if television integration, a turntable, a subwoofer or a genuinely wide stereo image is a requirement.

If your television has HDMI ARC or eARC, Duetto and RS250 are the safest choices from the published feature lists. HDMI lets the television remote control volume and usually avoids the latency or format limitations that can accompany Bluetooth. If the television offers only optical output, Gold Phantom remains viable, as do Duetto and RS250. For vinyl, the published phono inputs make Duetto and RS250 the direct choices; the other systems would require an external phono stage and a compatible line-level input, if available.
One speaker or a stereo pair?
Choose one cabinet when convenience dominates
A single Mu-so Utopia, RS250 or Zeppelin is easier to place and operate. It works when the listening position changes frequently, when furniture cannot be arranged symmetrically or when you want the smallest installation with no second power cable. A single cabinet can also be preferable for television sound in a room where a pair would force the screen and seating into a fixed layout.

Choose two speakers when imaging is the priority
Duetto and Gold Phantom stereo can create a wider stage because the left and right channels originate from separate locations. To benefit, place the speakers at similar heights, keep their distances from the main listening position reasonably close and avoid hiding one speaker behind furniture. The pair price includes two speakers, but you still need two suitable positions and access to power at both locations.
Remember the cost of expansion
A stereo pair may reduce the need for a separate subwoofer because two cabinets share bass duties, but the published specifications still show different low-frequency limits. Duetto includes a subwoofer output; RS250 does as well. No subwoofer output is listed for Gold Phantom stereo or Zeppelin in the supplied specifications, so do not assume later expansion is supported.

For the widest, most conventional stereo presentation
Select Duetto. Its two-speaker architecture, 105 dB SPL rating and extensive input list make it the most balanced replacement for listeners who want premium music playback rather than a lifestyle speaker.
For the strongest compact physical impact
Select Gold Phantom stereo. Its published 111 dB SPL at 1 meter and 2 × 4,500 W peak amplification lead the shortlist, and the $2,990 pair price is below Duetto’s $3,999 pair price. Accept the more limited cited connections and unconventional spherical design.
For television, vinyl and wired networking
Select RS250. HDMI ARC, moving-magnet phono, Ethernet, a headphone output and a subwoofer connection give it the most complete all-in-one source-handling brief. Confirm dealer authorization and the current quote before ordering.
For a straightforward system near $800
Select Zeppelin. It covers AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, Bluetooth and several services through its app at a published $799 US price. Do not choose it expecting the output, Dolby Atmos capability or physical-input breadth of the flagship systems.
For Dolby Atmos and processing in one premium chassis
Keep the Mu-so Utopia in contention. Its 720 watts, 15 drivers, 109 dB peak SPL and Dolby Atmos compatibility are the defining reasons to buy it rather than pursue a conventional stereo pair. The single cabinet and stated Naim/Focal room-adaptation processing are also part of its value.

Price, availability and purchase checks
Prices in this category change by country, currency, dealer and promotion. The figures above are US prices published in 2026: $3,999 per pair for Duetto, $2,990 per pair for Gold Phantom stereo and $799 for Zeppelin. McIntosh does not publish a current US RS250 MSRP on the cited product page, so a dealer quote is the only reliable current figure. The Mu-so Utopia launch price is not included in the supplied specifications.
Before paying, confirm whether a listing is for one speaker or a pair, whether the advertised price is a temporary promotion, and what warranty applies in your country. For RS250 in the United States, specifically check that the seller is an authorized dealer; McIntosh says unauthorized or used purchases can void the manufacturer warranty. Recheck the manufacturers’ US product pages for current stock, prices and regional availability because those details are volatile.
A practical decision checklist
- Decide on the architecture: choose a single cabinet for easier placement, or a stereo pair for a wider left-right image.
- List every source: mark television HDMI, optical, turntable, subwoofer, headphones, Ethernet and streaming services as required or optional.
- Set the output target: use published SPL and amplifier figures as indicators, not as directly comparable performance scores.
- Check the room: confirm that a pair has two suitable positions and that a single speaker will not be blocked by furniture or a corner.
- Verify the price basis: make sure a pair price is not being compared with a single-unit price and ask the dealer whether the amount is promotional.
- Verify warranty and region: especially for RS250, confirm authorization and coverage before purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which alternative has the most complete published input selection?
McIntosh RS250 has the broadest listed set: HDMI ARC, optical, moving-magnet phono, auxiliary, headphone and subwoofer connections, plus Ethernet and major wireless platforms.
Are the Gold Phantom’s 4,500 watts and the Mu-so’s 720 watts directly comparable?
No. Gold Phantom quotes 2 × 4,500 W peak amplification for a stereo pair, while Mu-so quotes 720 W for its system. Different measurement conventions and architectures make those figures directional rather than an apples-to-apples ranking.
Can I connect a turntable directly to every alternative?
No. Duetto lists RCA line/phono and RS250 lists a moving-magnet phono input. A phono input is not listed for Gold Phantom stereo or Zeppelin, and the supplied Mu-so specifications do not state one.
What should I verify when buying an RS250 online in the United States?
Confirm that the seller is a specifically authorized McIntosh US dealer and obtain the current price and warranty terms in writing. McIntosh says unauthorized-seller or used purchases can void the manufacturer warranty.
