Start with Apple’s built-in controls unless you need a larger caller database, interactive screening, voicemail tools, or a second number. Call Screening can ask an unknown caller for a name and reason before your iPhone rings; Silence Unknown Callers sends unsaved numbers to voicemail; and carrier spam filtering silences calls identified as potential spam or fraud. For an installed alternative, choose Truecaller for broad caller identification and reverse lookup, Hiya for supported scam-risk and AI-voice signals, or YouMail for voicemail protection, privacy scanning, and a separate number.
The right choice depends on your country, carrier, iOS version, call-forwarding support, privacy tolerance, and whether you want calls silently blocked or screened interactively. No primary source in the available evidence publishes an independent, head-to-head blocking-rate test, so treat community-size, rating, and feature claims as vendor or storefront figures rather than proof that one service catches every robocall.
Use the iPhone’s built-in call controls first
You do not need a third-party app to make an iPhone substantially quieter. Apple’s current iPhone documentation describes three separate defenses, each suited to a different kind of caller.

Call Screening automatically answers calls from unknown numbers without interrupting you, asks the caller for their name and reason, and presents that information before you decide whether to answer. This is the least disruptive option when you still need to hear from new clients, delivery drivers, schools, recruiters, or medical offices. It is screening rather than a permanent block: a legitimate caller can complete the prompt and reach you.

Silence Unknown Callers sends unsaved numbers to voicemail
Silence routes calls from numbers that are not in Contacts, Recents, or other qualifying lists to voicemail instead of ringing. You can review the voicemail and return a legitimate call, but you will not get a live conversation with an unsaved caller. This is effective for people who rarely need first-time callers to reach them immediately.
Spam filtering uses carrier identification
When your carrier identifies a call as potential spam or fraud, iPhone can silence it and place it in the appropriate spam area rather than ringing. Detection quality depends on the carrier’s data and support in your region; an iPhone cannot independently classify every new number.
Block a known number or contact
For a persistent caller, open the number in Phone’s Recents list, tap the info button, and choose Block Caller. You can also block a saved contact from that contact’s card. Blocking is precise and local to the numbers you select, but it does not create a database-wide defense against new numbers used by the same operation.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Phone (on iOS versions that place Phone settings directly in Settings, open Settings > Phone).
- Choose Call Screening and select the screening behavior offered on your iPhone.
- Enable Silence Unknown Callers if voicemail diversion is preferable to screening.
- Turn on the carrier’s Spam or spam-identification option when it appears.
Apple says calls can be identified through Apple Business Connect, participating carriers, and supported call-identification apps. Availability of each switch can therefore vary by country, carrier, and iOS release.
What a third-party call manager can add
Third-party services generally extend one or more of five functions: a larger shared caller-ID database, reverse lookup, interactive screening, voicemail handling, or a second number. Before installing one, decide which behavior you want.
- Silent blocking: the call is rejected or suppressed with no conversation.
- Carrier spam diversion: the carrier or service moves suspected calls to a spam location or voicemail.
- Voicemail diversion: the call reaches voicemail so you can inspect a message later.
- Interactive screening: the caller states a name or purpose before your phone rings.
- Identification only: the service labels a caller while leaving the answer decision to you.
Also check whether the service requires call forwarding. Forwarding can change how calls reach voicemail, involve your carrier, and be unavailable on some plans. An app’s App Store privacy label and its own retention statement are more useful than a generic “private” badge.

Best alternatives by use case
Truecaller: strongest all-around identification and lookup
Truecaller combines caller ID, spam, scam, and robocall blocking, reverse phone lookup, verified business caller ID, SMS filtering, and an Assistant that screens calls. Its iPhone feature page identifies automatic spam blocking and Assistant screening as Premium features in the stated iOS 18 context, so the free installation does not necessarily include the controls that motivated you to switch.
Choose it when you routinely receive calls from unfamiliar businesses or numbers and want context before answering. Reverse lookup is useful for checking a number after a missed call; verified business identity can make a legitimate company easier to recognize; and SMS filtering extends protection beyond voice calls.
Enable Truecaller in iPhone settings
- Install Truecaller from the App Store and complete its account setup.
- Open Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification.
- Enable Truecaller in the list of allowed identification and blocking extensions.
- Return to Truecaller and configure its spam-blocking and Assistant choices; subscribe only if the required feature is marked Premium.
- Place a test call from a non-contact number, or ask a trusted person to call, to confirm that identification and blocking behave as expected.
Truecaller says more than 500 million people have experienced its service. That is a company-stated community figure, not an independently measured detection rate. A large database can improve recognition, but it can also produce outdated or disputed labels; review a caller’s context rather than treating a label as proof of fraud.
Hiya: scam-risk context and AI-voice signals where supported
Hiya’s iPhone listing provides caller names and context, automatic blocking based on phone-number reputation data, number lookup, and Call Screener. It also describes AI Voice Detection and Call Safety Alerts for screened calls. These features are not universal: the listing says screening and AI functions require carrier call forwarding, are available only in the United States and Canada, support English, French, or Spanish, and vary by carrier, plan, device, and operating system.
The listing specifies iOS 17.6 or later and showed in-app purchases of $3.99 per month and $24.99 per year when accessed on October 20, 2026. Store prices can change and may differ by account or region, so verify the current amount in the App Store before subscribing.

Hiya setup and forwarding check
- Confirm that the iPhone is running iOS 17.6 or later and that your carrier and country are eligible.
- Install Hiya and review the requested call-identification permissions.
- Open Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification and enable Hiya.
- If you want Call Screener or AI features, follow Hiya’s carrier-specific instructions to enable call forwarding.
- Test both an incoming call and voicemail. If forwarding changes where calls land, disable it through the carrier’s instructions before relying on the feature for work or emergency contacts.
Hiya also offers a separate product called Hiya AI Phone. It provides summaries, transcripts, real-time scam protection, and synthetic-voice detection on iOS and Android, but its stated availability is currently limited to the United States. It starts with a 14-day free trial. Hiya says call data is encrypted and that processed summaries, transcriptions, and recordings are not retained or used to train models. Those are the provider’s stated handling practices; read the current privacy terms and App Store label before enabling call processing.

YouMail: voicemail protection, privacy scanning, and a second number
YouMail’s iPhone app includes free spam and robocall blocking, caller ID, scam-text protection, privacy scanning, and voicemail protection. Its Advanced Protection tier adds screening of unknown callers and a second number. A second number is practical for marketplace sales, dating, travel, job searches, side businesses, or any situation where you do not want to publish your personal line.
Choose YouMail when the problem is not only ringing spam but also a disorganized voicemail workflow or the need to separate identities. The service says, “YouMail helps you answer the calls that matter while blocking the ones that don’t,” and reports that more than 15 million people trust it. Both figures are YouMail’s own statements.
YouMail setup priorities
- Install YouMail and grant only the contacts, notifications, and call permissions needed for the functions you select.
- Configure voicemail protection according to your carrier’s forwarding instructions; confirm that callers reach the intended YouMail greeting.
- Turn on spam and robocall blocking, then decide whether unknown callers should be screened or sent to voicemail.
- Use the second number for public-facing activities and keep personal contacts on your primary line.
- Call your own number from another phone to verify greeting, transcription, notification, and blocking behavior.

How to choose without missing legitimate calls
Choose Apple only
Use the built-in controls if you want the smallest data footprint and do not need reverse lookup. Select Call Screening when new callers matter, or Silence Unknown Callers when nearly all first-time calls are unwanted. Keep a voicemail greeting that tells legitimate callers how to identify themselves.
Choose Truecaller
Pick Truecaller if recognition is the priority: unfamiliar business names, reverse lookup after missed calls, and configurable spam categories. Budget for Premium if you need automatic blocking or Assistant screening, and review the permissions before enabling SMS filtering.
Choose Hiya
Pick Hiya when you are in the supported United States or Canadian configuration and specifically want reputation-based warnings, Call Screener, or AI-voice signals. Verify carrier forwarding first; without that support, the headline screening features may not be available.
Choose YouMail
Pick YouMail when voicemail is central to your workflow, when scam texts and privacy exposure matter alongside calls, or when you need a public-facing second number. Confirm forwarding and greeting behavior before moving your primary voicemail.

Use more than one layer carefully
Apple’s screening, a carrier’s spam filter, and an app’s blocking extension can overlap. Start with one strategy, test it for several days, and add another layer only if you can tell which service handled a call. Stacking aggressive silence settings can hide an important first-time caller; stacking forwarding services can also send voicemail to the wrong destination.
Privacy and permission checklist
- Read the App Store privacy label for contacts, identifiers, usage data, diagnostics, and tracking before installation.
- Ask whether call audio, transcripts, phone numbers, or voicemail are processed on the device, by the carrier, or in a provider’s cloud.
- Check retention and model-training language. Hiya AI Phone states that processed summaries, transcriptions, and recordings are not retained or used to train models; confirm that the current terms still say this.
- Review call-forwarding permissions with your carrier, especially if your plan has separate voicemail, international, or business-line rules.
- Disable an app’s extension in Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Blocking & Identification before uninstalling or changing providers, so iOS does not leave a stale identification rule active.
Troubleshooting common failures
The app is installed but no caller names appear
Open the Phone settings path and enable the app’s identification extension. Then force-close and reopen Phone, update the app, and test with a number that is not saved in Contacts. Some labels appear only when the service has a match in its database.
Screening is missing or immediately unavailable
Check country, language, carrier, plan, iOS version, and forwarding status. Hiya’s listing limits screening and AI features to supported United States or Canadian configurations and requires carrier forwarding. A carrier can also disable forwarding on certain plans.
Legitimate calls are being silenced
Turn off Silence Unknown Callers or lower the third-party blocking level, then add recurring callers to Contacts. Review the app’s blocked or spam list and report false positives through the app’s correction workflow if one is provided.
Voicemail stopped working after setup
Call your number from another line. If the call does not reach the expected greeting, remove the service’s forwarding rule using your carrier’s instructions, restore native voicemail, and then re-enable one forwarding service at a time.

Spam calls continue despite blocking
Robocallers rotate numbers, and no source here establishes a universal blocking percentage. Keep the carrier spam filter enabled, report persistent numbers, and use screening rather than relying solely on a static block list.

Apple’s App Store editorial page also lists RoboKiller, Nomorobo, AT&T ActiveArmor, Textkiller, Numbo, and Getcontact alongside Truecaller, YouMail, and Hiya. Treat that list as a starting point, not a ranking. Before choosing any of those services, verify current country and carrier availability, required iOS version, subscription terms, forwarding behavior, and the App Store privacy label.
Bottom line: match the intervention to the call you need
For most people, Apple’s Call Screening plus carrier spam filtering is the sensible no-install baseline. Add Truecaller when identification and lookup are more important than minimizing subscriptions. Add Hiya when your carrier and region support its screening and AI-voice functions. Add YouMail when voicemail protection, privacy scanning, or a separate number solves a broader communication problem. Test the setup with known legitimate callers before turning on the most aggressive silence or forwarding options.
