The best Stripe Link alternative depends on where your agent finishes the purchase. Use Apple Pay or Google Pay when an assistant can hand the shopper to a device-native wallet. Choose PayPal Braintree Agent Ready when you need a documented route for orders from ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Gemini. Use UCP with delegated checkout when the agent should remain inside an AI interface while your systems continue to control products, pricing, fulfillment, tax, refunds, and customer service. For per-request or per-session charges between software systems, use a machine-payment design rather than a consumer wallet.
These options are not interchangeable buttons. They differ in agent coverage, customer approval, credential exposure, merchant-of-record control, implementation effort, country support, and commercial terms.
What Stripe Link does in an agent checkout
Stripe describes Link as a reusable digital wallet. A customer saves a preferred payment method once, then reuses it at eligible checkouts. Depending on eligibility, the wallet can include cards, Instant Bank Payments, Klarna, Pix, UPI, and stablecoins.
In an agent-assisted purchase, the important feature is not the button label. It is the way an agent obtains permission to pay without receiving the shopper’s underlying card or bank credentials. Stripe’s Shared Payment Tokens illustrate this model: an agent can initiate a payment with a saved method using authorization scoped to a seller, amount, and time window. The customer can therefore approve a bounded transaction while the merchant keeps the payment credentials out of the agent’s hands.

An alternative should be evaluated against that same set of controls:
- Where the transaction occurs: a browser, a device wallet, an AI assistant, or a machine-to-machine session.
- How consent is granted: a user-present wallet sheet, an order-by-order approval, a scoped token, or a pre-authorized spending limit.
- Who remains responsible for the commercial transaction: pricing, inventory, taxes, fulfillment, refunds, and support.
- Which countries, currencies, payment methods, merchant categories, and underwriting rules are supported.
Choose the checkout model before choosing a provider
1. Browser or device-native wallet handoff
If the agent can send the shopper to a normal web checkout, Apple Pay and Google Pay are the closest functional alternatives to Link. They are familiar wallets, keep payment details inside the wallet ecosystem, and are designed for a customer who is present on a supported device or browser.
2. Embedded checkout inside an AI interface
If the purchase must stay inside an assistant conversation, use a protocol or delegated-checkout architecture. The agent requests products, shipping options, fulfillment choices, and payment options, while the merchant remains the seller of record. UCP and Stripe’s Delegated Checkout pattern fit this model better than a wallet button that assumes a browser handoff.

If you want one documented integration path for several major assistants, Braintree Agent Ready is the clearest option described for this use case. Its documented routes use ACP delegated payment tokens and UCP’s Google Pay payment handler.
4. Machine-to-machine charges
For software that buys a service for each request or session, a consumer wallet creates unnecessary interaction. A machine-payment design can authorize programmatic charges, including models that settle with stablecoins. This is a different product category from a reusable consumer wallet.

Apple Pay: the closest wallet replacement for Apple-heavy audiences
Apple exposes two web integration routes: Apple Pay JS and the W3C Payment Request API. Both are intended for a shopper using a supported Apple device and browser rather than for an autonomous agent holding a reusable card number.
What you must have
- An Apple Developer account.
- HTTPS on the checkout domain.
- Merchant identifiers and the required Apple Pay certificates.
- Verified ownership of the domain.
- A payment service provider or e-commerce platform that supports Apple Pay, unless you build the payment processing connection yourself.
Apple says an approved e-commerce platform or payment service provider can supply the integration, and that a provider’s SDK or JavaScript API is generally the quickest and most reliable route.

Where it fits an agent flow
Apple Pay works when an assistant can prepare a cart and then transfer the shopper to a user-authorized Apple Pay sheet. The customer sees the payment request and confirms it on the device. This preserves strong user presence, but it is not the same as allowing an unattended agent to spend from a wallet in the background.
Questions to settle before implementation
- Which Apple devices and browsers are in your target audience?
- Can your assistant reliably hand off to a supported web checkout without losing the cart, shipping choice, or discount?
- Does your payment service provider support the countries, currencies, and payment methods you need?
- Who will operate certificate renewal, domain verification, and merchant-identifier changes?
Apple Pay is usually the simplest Link alternative when your conversion path already ends in Safari or another supported Apple web surface. It is less suitable as the only option for a mixed-device audience or for fully autonomous, machine-to-machine purchases.
Google Pay and UCP: a route into Google’s agentic surfaces
Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) standardizes programmatic exchange between an AI agent and a merchant backend. Google describes UCP as supporting commerce journeys including product discovery and checkout on Google AI Mode and Gemini.

How the payment step works
In Google’s agentic-checkout model, the assistant completes checkout steps and Google Pay supplies payment methods and shipping information already saved in Google Wallet. Google says payment information is encrypted during agentic checkout. The merchant still needs to expose accurate products, availability, prices, shipping choices, and order status through the UCP integration.

- Catalog and availability: Decide which products, variants, inventory states, and prices the agent may display.
- Checkout data: Return shipping destinations, delivery choices, taxes, discounts, and the final amount in a form the assistant can present for approval.
- Payment handling: Support the Google Pay payment handler and define how a successful authorization becomes an order in your systems.
- Order lifecycle: Return confirmation, fulfillment status, cancellation rules, refunds, and customer-service contact paths.
- Consent and exceptions: Specify when the customer must reapprove because the amount, shipping address, or fulfillment option changes.
When UCP is the right choice
Choose UCP when Google AI Mode or Gemini is a priority surface and you are prepared to expose commerce capabilities through merchant APIs. It gives the assistant a structured way to transact instead of forcing it to scrape a page or simulate clicks.
UCP is not a universal guarantee of reach. Rollout, merchant eligibility, supported countries, and the customer’s Google surface can limit who sees the flow. Confirm those conditions for your business before treating UCP as your only checkout.
PayPal Braintree Agent Ready: the documented multi-assistant path
PayPal’s Agent Ready overview says Braintree merchants can accept payments from AI shopping assistants across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Gemini without building a separate integration for each assistant. The overview was updated June 10, 2026.
Its two documented paths
- ACP: The assistant uses delegated payment tokens to represent an approved payment without receiving the shopper’s raw credentials.
- UCP: The merchant uses UCP with a Google Pay payment handler through Braintree.
This makes Agent Ready especially relevant to a merchant that already operates a Braintree account and wants a cross-assistant strategy rather than a wallet that only works after a browser handoff.

What to verify before committing
- Whether Braintree Agent Ready is available in your country and merchant category.
- Whether your account has the required underwriting and product access.
- Which assistant surfaces and protocol paths are enabled for your account.
- How delegated-token approval is shown to the customer and what events require another approval.
- How pricing, disputes, refunds, settlement, and reconciliation work for agent-originated orders.
The public overview establishes the integration direction, not universal availability or pricing. Ask Braintree for account-specific confirmation before promising customers that every assistant can complete checkout.
Keeping Stripe without relying on Link alone
You do not have to replace Stripe to change the agent experience. Stripe describes three agentic-commerce models: browser checkout, embedded checkout, and machine payments.
Delegated Checkout
Delegated Checkout lets an AI platform embed a secure checkout while the agent requests the information needed to complete an order. The merchant can continue using its Stripe-based systems for payment operations and the surrounding commerce responsibilities.
Shared Payment Tokens
Shared Payment Tokens let an agent use a customer’s preferred saved payment method without exposing the underlying credentials. Stripe describes the authorization as scoped to a seller, amount, and time window. Those boundaries are the key design controls: the token should not silently become a general-purpose spending credential.
Why this is an alternative to Link-only checkout
These capabilities change how an agent obtains authorization and how checkout is embedded; they do not replace Stripe as the processor. They are appropriate when you want to retain Stripe’s merchant-of-record, tax, fulfillment, refund, and customer-service integrations while supporting an assistant-native flow.

Confirm API access, maturity, fraud tooling, customer-approval requirements, and target-geography availability before designing around these capabilities. A feature that is available to one account or platform partner may not be generally available to every merchant.

A wallet is optimized for a person who saves a payment method and approves a purchase. A machine-payment system is optimized for software that repeatedly buys metered access, data, compute, or another service.
Use cases that favor machine payments
- An agent pays for each API request it makes.
- A software session consumes a metered service and settles at the end of the session.
- A purchasing system operates under a pre-approved budget with policy limits.
- The buyer and seller need programmatic reconciliation rather than a visual wallet receipt.
Stripe describes machine payments and stablecoin settlement as one model. The merchant must still define authorization, spending limits, pricing, metering, refunds, failed-payment handling, and accounting. Do not expose a long-lived secret or unrestricted payment credential to an agent; issue narrowly scoped authorization and revoke it when the session ends.

Start with the agent surface
List the places where a customer will ask an assistant to buy: your website, a custom assistant, ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, or an internal software agent. A browser-only wallet cannot satisfy a requirement for an embedded assistant flow, while a machine-payment protocol is excessive for a single Apple Pay handoff.
Define who must be present
Decide whether every order requires the shopper to see and approve a payment sheet, whether an assistant may use a token for a specific order, or whether a trusted software process may spend from a bounded budget. This decision determines whether Apple Pay, Google Pay, delegated tokens, or machine authorization is appropriate.
Keep commerce authority in the right system
Your product and order backend should remain the source of truth for price, inventory, shipping, tax, fulfillment, cancellation, refunds, and support. The assistant should request and present those choices, not invent them. Require the final amount and delivery terms to be rechecked immediately before authorization.
Map failure and recovery paths
- Amount changed: invalidate the old approval and request a new one.
- Inventory disappeared: return a replacement choice rather than charging the original cart.
- Shipping address is unsupported: stop before payment and ask for a supported destination.
- Authorization fails: preserve the cart and offer another supported payment route.
- Assistant session ends: expire temporary tokens and leave the order in a clearly recoverable state.
Confirm coverage and economics
There is no reliable universal price, conversion lift, market-share, or country-coverage figure that compares these options. Verify transaction pricing, recurring fees, settlement timing, supported currencies and payment methods, underwriting, dispute liability, and regional availability directly for your merchant account and vertical.

- Document the purchase journey: Identify the assistant, device, browser, country, currency, product type, and whether the customer is present.
- Choose the model: Select wallet handoff, embedded delegated checkout, cross-assistant protocol integration, or machine payment.
- Specify authorization: Record the seller, amount, currency, expiration, customer-approval event, and any allowed changes.
- Expose trustworthy commerce data: Keep catalog, inventory, shipping, tax, discounts, and order status in your backend.
- Integrate the payment path: Complete the Apple Pay requirements, UCP and Google Pay handler, Braintree protocol path, or applicable Stripe agentic API work.
- Test exceptions: Exercise declines, expired approvals, changed totals, unavailable inventory, unsupported addresses, duplicate submissions, cancellations, and refunds.
- Audit the handoff: Store which assistant initiated the order, what the customer approved, which token or wallet authorization was used, and the final captured amount.
- Launch narrowly: Begin with one country, currency, assistant surface, and product category, then expand after reconciliation and support workflows are stable.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling every wallet an agent checkout: Apple Pay and Google Pay generally involve a customer-authorized wallet step; they do not automatically provide unattended spending.
- Assuming protocol support means instant availability: UCP and Braintree Agent Ready still depend on rollout, eligibility, account access, and geography.
- Letting the agent calculate the final price: The merchant backend must own price, inventory, tax, shipping, and fulfillment decisions.
- Using broad or permanent credentials: Prefer seller-, amount-, and time-scoped authorization or an explicitly bounded machine budget.
- Ignoring recovery: A failed authorization should not lose the cart or create an order with uncertain payment status.
- Comparing only transaction fees: Include engineering work, certificate operations, protocol maintenance, fraud controls, support, refunds, disputes, and reconciliation.
Bottom line: match the alternative to the job
For a normal web checkout dominated by Apple devices, Apple Pay is the most direct wallet alternative. For Google AI Mode or Gemini, Google Pay through UCP provides the documented agentic-commerce route. For one integration strategy spanning ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Gemini, Braintree Agent Ready is the clearest documented multi-assistant option, subject to account and regional eligibility. If you already use Stripe and want embedded assistant checkout, Delegated Checkout and Shared Payment Tokens let you change the authorization model without replacing your Stripe commerce systems. For software that buys by request or session, use machine-payment authorization instead of forcing a human wallet model onto an automated workload.
