The Meta Quest 3 is the clearest all-round alternative if you want standalone VR plus a documented route to Steam games. For a non-Meta headset that also supports standalone play and PC VR, consider the HTC VIVE Focus Vision. The Meta Quest 3S is the lower-spec Quest option, but Steam’s published Steam Link list reviewed here does not name it.

These headsets do not reproduce Steam Frame’s exact setup. Valve describes Steam Frame as a standalone headset designed primarily for low-latency streaming from a PC, while also supporting standalone VR and non-VR. Choose by the library and connection method you need, not by the word “standalone” alone. Valve’s Steam Frame documentation

Meta Quest 3 Wireless all-in-one VR Meta Link by cable or Air Link; Steam lists Quest 3 for Steam Link 2064×2208 pixels per eye; 110° horizontal FOV; head and hand tracking; color passthrough Standalone play plus more than one documented PC connection route
Meta Quest 3S Wireless all-in-one VR Meta Link by cable or Air Link; the Steam Link compatibility page reviewed here does not name Quest 3S 1832×1920 pixels per eye; 96° horizontal FOV; head and hand tracking; color passthrough A Quest-family option if you accept lower published display specifications than Quest 3
HTC VIVE Focus Vision Standalone headset with HTC’s own OS and app ecosystem Wireless streaming through VIVE Hub; wired USB/DisplayPort with the optional Wired Streaming Kit; Steam also lists Focus Vision for Steam Link 2448×2448 pixels per eye; up to 120° FOV; integrated eye tracking and inside-out tracking A non-Meta hybrid with a wired DisplayPort option

Meta Quest 3: the broadest documented fit

Meta describes Quest 3 as a wireless all-in-one headset and supports PC VR through Meta Quest Link by cable or Air Link. Separately, Steam lists Quest 3 as compatible with Steam Link, which streams a Steam library to the headset. Those are distinct routes; Meta Link/Air Link support does not itself establish Steam Link compatibility, or vice versa.

Meta estimates approximately two hours of battery life. These are vendor-published specifications and an estimate, not independent measurements. Meta device comparison

Quest 3 makes sense if standalone use matters as much as PC VR and you want both Meta’s documented PC connection options and a headset named on Steam’s Steam Link page. The available documentation does not show that its wireless streaming has Steam Frame’s latency, image quality, or dedicated wireless arrangement.

Meta Quest 3S: a Quest alternative with different specifications

Quest 3S is not a specification twin of Quest 3. Meta lists 1832×1920 pixels per eye and a 96° horizontal, 90° vertical field of view, compared with Quest 3’s 2064×2208 pixels per eye and 110° horizontal, 96° vertical field of view. Meta lists the same Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor and 8 GB onboard memory for both, along with head and hand tracking and color passthrough. Its estimated battery life is approximately 2.5 hours, according to Meta’s device comparison.

Meta lists Link by cable or Air Link for Quest 3S, so it has a documented PC VR path. Steam’s compatibility page reviewed here names Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro, but not Quest 3S. Treat Meta Link/Air Link support and Steam Link listing as separate facts; if Steam Link is essential, check Steam’s current compatibility page before buying. HTC VIVE Focus Vision: the non-Meta standalone and PC VR option

HTC describes Focus Vision as a standalone headset with its own operating system and app ecosystem, as well as a PC-connected headset for SteamVR content. HTC documents wireless streaming through VIVE Hub and wired streaming through an optional VIVE Wired Streaming Kit. Steam also lists Focus Vision for Steam Link, making it the non-Meta option in this comparison with an explicitly documented Steam Link listing.

HTC publishes 2448×2448 pixels per eye, up to 120° field of view, integrated eye tracking, automatic IPD adjustment, and inside-out tracking. Its product page says active play can last up to two hours, depending on use. HTC cautions that actual latency and visual quality depend on PC specifications, software settings, and network conditions. These figures and qualifications are manufacturer claims, not comparative test results. HTC VIVE Focus Vision product page

What the wired option adds

DisplayPort mode requires HTC’s optional Wired Streaming Kit, which includes a cable and converter. Account for that kit if you want the wired route; its price and local availability are not established here. HTC’s linked product page is for the US, and regional pricing, bundles, availability, and warranty terms may differ. Wireless streaming avoids that specific kit requirement, but its results depend on the computer, software, and network.

How to choose before you buy

  • Check the standalone library and experience. Quest devices are wireless all-in-one headsets; Focus Vision uses HTC’s own OS and app ecosystem. Confirm that the apps you want are available for the headset itself rather than assuming a PC streaming path supplies a standalone version.
  • Verify the exact PC route. Decide whether you intend to use Meta Link, Air Link, VIVE Hub, a wired DisplayPort connection, or Steam Link. Check the relevant app’s current compatibility list for the specific headset model.
  • Choose wired or wireless deliberately. Focus Vision DisplayPort mode needs the optional Wired Streaming Kit. Wireless performance depends on PC, software, and network conditions; compatibility alone does not guarantee a particular latency or image quality.
  • Compare the published display figures and fit needs. Resolution and field of view differ across these models, but manufacturer specifications are not a substitute for hands-on fit or image-quality comparison.
  • Consider tracking features you will use. Meta lists head and hand tracking and color passthrough for both Quest models; HTC lists integrated eye tracking and inside-out tracking for Focus Vision.
  • Check total local cost and availability. Include any required or desired accessories, such as Focus Vision’s Wired Streaming Kit, and verify current retailer pricing, bundles, stock, and regional terms. Current street prices are not established here.
