Florida homeowners who want an alternative to Slide should obtain like-for-like quotes from several admitted insurers, check whether Citizens Property Insurance Corporation is available, and use a licensed local agent for difficult-to-place homes. The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR) CHOICES tool can show directional county comparisons, but its sample rates are illustrative rather than personal quotes. Surplus-lines coverage may be the fallback for unusual or high-risk properties. Self-insurance is practical only for an owner without a mortgage who can fund a complete rebuild and related living costs after a catastrophe.
What you can get instead of Slide in Florida
There is no single replacement that is cheapest or available to every property. Florida underwriting can change by county, roof age, construction, claims history, hurricane exposure, deductible and inspection results. Treat the following as shopping paths rather than a ranking.
| Alternative | When it fits | Important checks |
|---|---|---|
| Admitted private insurers | Most homeowners who can meet a standard carrier’s underwriting rules. | Replacement-cost basis, roof settlement, deductibles, exclusions, financial strength, inspection requirements and lender acceptance. |
| Citizens Property Insurance Corporation | Owners who cannot find acceptable coverage in the private market and meet Citizens’ eligibility rules. | Eligibility at renewal, policy form, wind and all-other-peril deductibles, coverage limits, rate territory and any private-market offer. |
| Surplus-lines insurance | Unusual, older, high-value or high-risk homes that standard admitted insurers will not write. | Exclusions, roof-loss settlement, deductibles, claims handling, lender approval and the insurer’s surplus-lines status. |
| Florida Market Assistance Plan (FMAP) | Shoppers who need an agent to search Florida-authorized insurers, especially after declinations. | Ask which carriers were approached, what was declined and how each quote differs. |
| Self-insurance | An owner with no mortgage and enough liquid assets to absorb rebuilding, temporary housing and liability costs. | No lender protection, no transfer of catastrophe risk and substantial capital required after a loss. |
The March 31, 2026 Citizens market report identifies State Farm Florida, Universal, Slide, Tower Hill, American Integrity, First Protective, Florida Peninsula, Kin and other insurers writing Florida personal-residential property. Being listed in a market report does not mean a carrier will accept a particular home or offer a lower premium.

What the Florida market figures actually show
Citizens’ official March 31, 2026 report lists 7,591,252 personal-residential policies statewide. Its rounded shares of policies in force include State Farm at 9%, Universal at 7%, Slide at 7%, Tower Hill at 5%, American Integrity at 5%, First Protective at 4%, Florida Peninsula at 3%, Kin at 2% and Citizens at 4%. The December 31, 2025 report similarly lists State Farm, Tower Hill, First Protective, Slide, American Integrity, Universal, Citizens, Florida Peninsula and Kin among the largest named carriers. These are policy-count shares, not measures of price, claims quality or coverage breadth.

Citizens reported that OIR-approved changes effective July 1, 2026 produce statewide average decreases of 8.8% for homeowners multiperil policies and 5.1% for wind-only policies. Those are averages across the applicable Citizens book. Your premium can move differently because policy form, territory, coverage limits, deductibles and underwriting vary.
How to shop for a genuine Slide replacement
- Collect your current policy information. Save the declarations page, forms and endorsements, dwelling limit, replacement-cost estimate, personal-property and liability limits, hurricane and other-peril deductibles, roof settlement language, renewal date and any inspection reports. Note open claims, prior losses, roof age, electrical or plumbing updates, solar equipment, screened enclosures, pools and detached structures.
- Define the coverage you need before requesting prices. Decide whether the dwelling limit reflects current reconstruction cost rather than market value. Set target limits for other structures, contents, loss of use and liability. Identify whether you need ordinance-or-law, matching, water-backup, equipment-breakdown or scheduled-property coverage.
- Use OIR CHOICES for orientation only. The tool can help compare illustrative county-level examples. OIR recommends contacting an insurance agent or company for an official premium quote; a CHOICES result is not a commitment to insure your home.
- Request multiple admitted-market quotes. Ask a licensed agent or each insurer for the same dwelling limit, replacement-cost basis, deductibles, endorsements and payment terms. Obtain a declarations-page comparison, not just a premium number.
- Arrange inspections early. A roof-age issue or system condition can make a quote unavailable after you have cancelled an existing policy. Order a qualified wind-mitigation inspection and, when requested, a four-point inspection before binding new coverage.
- Check the insurer and policy form. Confirm the company is authorized for the risk, determine whether the policy is admitted or surplus lines, review financial-strength information, read exclusions and sublimits, and ask how claims are reported and handled.
- Confirm your lender’s requirements. A mortgage servicer may reject a form, deductible, roof settlement provision or surplus-lines policy even when an insurer offers it. Get written lender acceptance before cancelling Slide.
- Bind the replacement first. Obtain the binder or policy number, effective date and proof of coverage. Keep continuous coverage; do not cancel the existing policy until the new policy is active and accepted by the lender.
- Review the new declarations page immediately. Verify every limit, deductible, named insured, property address, mortgagee, roof-loss basis and endorsement. Correct errors during the insurer’s review period and retain both policies’ records.
Compare coverage, not just the premium
Ask every carrier or agent to complete the same comparison. A lower price can reflect a larger hurricane deductible, actual-cash-value roof settlement, narrower water coverage or an exclusion that matters after a storm.
| Item | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Dwelling | Is the limit based on replacement cost? What assumptions were used for construction type, square footage and labor? |
| Other structures | Are detached garages, fences, docks, pools and screened rooms covered, and at what percentage or sublimit? |
| Personal property | Is contents coverage replacement cost or actual cash value? Are jewelry, tools, computers, firearms or collectibles sublimited? |
| Loss of use | How are temporary housing, meals and additional living expenses calculated, and for how long? |
| Liability | What personal-liability and medical-payments limits apply? Are pools, dogs, rentals or home businesses excluded? |
| Wind and hurricane | Is wind included, excluded or written separately? Is the hurricane deductible a percentage of dwelling value, a flat amount or per occurrence? |
| All other perils | What deductible applies to fire, theft, water and non-hurricane storm losses? |
| Roof losses | Will the insurer pay replacement cost, a schedule, depreciated value or only repair of the damaged area? Are matching requirements limited? |
| Water damage | What is covered for sudden plumbing leaks, seepage, mold, water backup and coastal flooding? Check each sublimit and exclusion. |
| Ordinance and law | Does the policy pay increased rebuilding costs required by current Florida or local codes? |
| Exclusions and sublimits | Request a plain-language explanation of every material exclusion, limitation and endorsement. |
| Claims and service | How are claims reported after a storm, what documentation is required and who adjusts the loss? |
| Insurer status | Is the carrier admitted in Florida or a surplus-lines insurer? Is the policy acceptable to your lender? |
Admitted private insurers: the first alternative to test
An admitted insurer is authorized in Florida and uses forms and rates overseen under the state’s insurance system. The market report names multiple admitted writers, including State Farm Florida, Tower Hill, First Protective, American Integrity, Universal, Florida Peninsula and Kin. Availability is property-specific: two homes on the same street can receive different decisions because of roof age, wind mitigation, prior claims, construction, distance to the coast or inspection findings.
How to evaluate a private quote
- Compare the total annual and installment cost after all discounts and fees.
- Separate the hurricane deductible from the all-other-peril deductible; a low annual premium may shift more risk to you.
- Ask whether the roof is settled at replacement cost, a percentage schedule or actual cash value.
- Confirm whether wind is included and whether flood, storm surge or rising water is excluded.
- Review cancellation, nonrenewal, inspection and roof-age provisions before accepting.
Citizens: when switching from Slide may make sense
Citizens is Florida’s state-backed insurer for owners who cannot find acceptable private coverage. You must meet its eligibility rules, and those rules and available policy forms should be checked at renewal. A private insurer’s offer can affect eligibility, so provide accurate information about every quote and any depopulation or take-out notice.

The July 1, 2026 rate changes are statewide averages: 8.8% lower for homeowners multiperil policies and 5.1% lower for wind-only policies. They do not guarantee that a former Slide customer will pay less. Compare Citizens’ dwelling limit, wind treatment, deductibles, roof settlement, loss-of-use limit and exclusions against the private quote on the same basis.
Steps to request Citizens coverage
- Ask a licensed agent to confirm that your property meets current Citizens eligibility requirements.
- Provide the declarations page, inspection documents, claims history and mitigation information.
- Review the proposed Citizens policy and any private-market offer side by side.
- Confirm the effective date and lender requirements before ending Slide coverage.
Surplus-lines insurance for hard-to-place homes
The Florida Department of Financial Services’ Office of the Insurance Consumer Advocate describes surplus lines as an alternative for consumers who cannot obtain coverage in the standard or admitted market. It can be relevant to homes with older roofs, unusual construction, severe loss history, high replacement values or exposure that admitted carriers decline.
Surplus-lines availability does not make a policy equivalent to an admitted policy. Read the form line by line for exclusions, wind treatment, water damage, roof settlement, ordinance-and-law coverage, deductibles and claims procedures. Ask whether the insurer will satisfy your mortgage contract and whether the lender requires an admitted carrier. Confirm the policy’s Florida surplus-lines status and the agent’s licensing before paying.

What to give the referred agent
- Your current declarations page and renewal or cancellation date.
- Roof installation date, permits and inspection reports.
- Wind-mitigation features and any prior mitigation form.
- Five years of claims information, if available.
- Mortgagee details and the lender’s coverage requirements.
- Desired limits, deductibles and any flood or specialty coverage needs.
Ask the agent to identify which authorized insurers were approached, why a submission was declined, and how each offered form differs from Slide. This prevents a series of unexplained quote numbers from being mistaken for equivalent coverage.
Inspections and mitigation can change eligibility and price
Florida requires insurers to offer discounts for features that reduce hurricane-wind damage. A qualified inspector documents those features on the state’s wind-mitigation form. Depending on the home and insurer, documented roof-to-wall connections, roof shape, shutters or impact openings and other protections can affect eligibility and premium. Submit a current, properly completed form; an undocumented feature cannot support a discount.
Insurers also commonly require a four-point inspection for new or renewal policies. It reviews the roof, electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems. The inspection can reveal a condition that requires repair, a restricted roof settlement or a refusal to write the risk. Obtain it early when roof age or system condition may influence shopping, and keep invoices, permits and completed repairs with the report.

Do not assume a homeowners quote covers flooding. OIR states that an HO-6 condominium unit-owners policy generally does not cover flooding, and additional coverage is needed if you want flood protection. The same issue should be checked on any homeowners form: ask specifically about storm surge, rising water, coastal inundation, seepage, basement contents and waiting periods. Compare flood coverage separately rather than treating its absence as a defect unique to Slide.

Are any alternatives guaranteed to be cheaper than Slide?
No. Premiums depend on the property and the policy design. The OIR CHOICES figures are illustrative, and county averages cannot predict an individual quote. Kin reports that its customers pay an average of $1,977 per year, but that is a company-reported average accessed in 2026, not a quote or expected price for your home. Use it only as context and request a written quote with matching limits and deductibles.
To identify a real saving, calculate the premium plus any policy fees and compare the maximum likely out-of-pocket cost after a hurricane. A policy that costs less but changes a 2% deductible to 5%, values the roof at depreciated cost or removes ordinance-and-law coverage may be a transfer of risk rather than a saving.
Choose the path that matches your property
Standard home with a recent roof and clean claims history
Start with several admitted carriers and an independent agent. A current wind-mitigation form and four-point report may prevent avoidable underwriting delays. Compare the private quotes with Citizens only if eligibility is available.
Older roof, prior losses or unusual construction
Have an agent approach admitted carriers first, then ask about Citizens eligibility and surplus-lines options. Expect closer inspection, roof settlement limitations or higher deductibles. Do not cancel existing coverage until a replacement is bound.

High-value or custom home
Request a reconstruction-cost review and verify limits for detached structures, contents, art, jewelry, landscaping and temporary housing. A surplus-lines policy may be available, but lender acceptance, exclusions and claims resources require careful review.
Condominium unit
Coordinate your HO-6 limits with the association’s master policy. Check building-item responsibility, loss assessment, water damage and flood separately. Do not assume the association’s policy covers your contents or temporary housing.
Owner without a mortgage considering self-insurance
Model the full worst-case obligation: demolition, debris removal, code upgrades, rebuilding, temporary housing, contents, liability and professional fees. If those funds are not immediately available, self-insurance does not provide the same protection as a policy and leaves catastrophe risk entirely with you.

Common switching mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing only annual premiums: Put limits, deductibles, roof settlement and exclusions in a declarations-page comparison.
- Using a sample rate as a quote: Treat OIR CHOICES as directional and obtain an official offer.
- Ignoring the roof: Verify installation date, permits, inspection condition and settlement basis before assuming eligibility.
- Letting coverage lapse: Bind the new policy and confirm the lender before cancelling Slide.
- Assuming wind means flood: Ask separately about storm surge and rising water; obtain flood coverage when needed.
- Overlooking insurer status: Confirm admitted versus surplus lines, Florida authorization, financial-strength information and lender acceptance.
- Missing renewal changes: Recheck eligibility, deductibles, forms and any private-market or Citizens notice at every renewal.
A practical pre-switch checklist
- Declarations-page comparison completed with identical limits and deductibles.
- Wind-mitigation form current and signed by a qualified inspector.
- Four-point inspection supplied when requested.
- Roof settlement and matching provisions understood.
- Flood need evaluated separately.
- Claims process and exclusions reviewed.
- Carrier authorization, financial-strength information and admitted or surplus-lines status verified.
- Mortgage lender has accepted the proposed policy.
- Replacement policy is bound with a confirmed effective date.
- Existing Slide policy is cancelled only after continuous coverage is confirmed.
