For maximum support, start with the Brooks Addiction Walker 2; for a lighter athletic feel, consider the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 23. New Balance 1080v15 and HOKA Clifton 10 emphasize soft cushioning, while Vionic 23Walk, HOKA Arahi 8 and ASICS GEL-KAYANO 32 provide more structured support. The right choice still depends on your foot shape, gait, width, intended use and whether you wear orthotics.
This guide explains what each alternative actually offers, how its evidence should be interpreted, and how to test a pair before committing. No shoe is a treatment or a guarantee of pain relief.
At-a-glance alternatives
The models below represent different approaches to arch comfort rather than a single ranking. Technology descriptions come from the manufacturers, while APMA entries establish directory acceptance only. Verify the current generation, width options, price and return terms before ordering.

“Best” changes with the problem you are solving. A firm, stable walking shoe can feel secure at work but too rigid for someone who wants a springy exercise trainer. Conversely, a plush shoe can feel comfortable immediately yet lack the hold you need on long standing shifts.

What you are comparing with Skechers Arch Fit
Skechers describes Arch Fit as a podiatrist-designed shape developed from 20 years of data and 120,000 unweighted foot scans. That is a manufacturer claim, not an independent finding that every foot will benefit from the design. Use Arch Fit as a baseline for the feel you already know, then identify which characteristic you want to change: more stability, a different arch contour, a wider toe area, a firmer platform or a lighter athletic upper.
A useful comparison separates four elements that are often lumped together as “arch support.”
- Footbed contour: the insole can feel flat, gently shaped or distinctly supportive. A pronounced contour is not automatically better if it presses on the wrong part of your arch.
- Whole-shoe stability: a broad base, controlled flex and guidance features can make the shoe feel steady even when the insole itself is not strongly contoured.
- Cushioning: soft foam reduces the sensation of impact, while a firmer platform can feel more predictable during long periods on your feet.
- Fit and retention: correct length, width, heel hold and toe-room determine whether support stays under your foot as you walk.
Skechers’ own walking guidance summarizes the goal as balancing cushioning, arch support, fit and grip. That is a better decision rule than choosing the shoe with the most aggressive arch shape.
Detailed alternatives
Brooks Addiction Walker 2: the maximum-support starting point
The Addiction Walker 2 is the clearest choice when your priority is a supportive walking platform rather than a lightweight running-shoe sensation. Brooks presents it as a maximum-support model that combines stabilization, support and cushioning. Brooks also says its listed orthopedic walking styles have earned the APMA Seal of Acceptance, which the company describes as recognition for products intended to promote good foot health.
Choose it first for work-day standing, repeated pavement walking or anyone who finds highly flexible shoes unstable. Its walking-shoe construction is a better match for controlled, steady movement than for fast workouts. Expect a more substantial feel than a lightweight trainer; that is a feature for some users and a drawback for others.
Because a support category does not establish a universal fit, check whether the heel stays planted and whether the shoe bends where your toes bend. If the platform feels secure but the insole contour is wrong, test it with your usual orthotic only if the removable-insole design and available depth permit it. Do not assume an aftermarket insert will fit without reducing toe room.
Brooks Adrenaline GTS 23: lighter structured support
The Adrenaline GTS 23 is the athletic alternative for readers who want support without the full work-shoe character of a maximum-support walker. Brooks says it combines DNA LOFT v2 cushioning with GuideRails support technology and a breathable engineered-mesh upper. That combination aims for a balance of softness and guidance.

It makes sense for exercise walking, travel days and mixed casual-athletic use. The engineered mesh may feel cooler than a heavier walking upper, but breathability does not tell you whether the shoe will resist rain or hold up in abrasive conditions. Check the current upper and outsole details for the exact version you are buying.
GuideRails is a manufacturer technology description, not proof that the shoe corrects a gait problem. Walk in it at your normal pace and on the surfaces where you will use it. If your foot slides forward or the heel lifts, a different size or width is more likely to help than adding a thicker arch insert.
New Balance 1080v15: plush cushioning with directory acceptance
New Balance 1080v15, also identified as W1080 in the APMA directory, is a cushioning-first option. The APMA listing places it in the current women’s athletic-footwear directory. That confirms directory acceptance, not superiority, medical efficacy or a guaranteed arch-support effect.
Start here if your main complaint is harsh impact during long walks and you prefer a soft athletic platform. Cushioning can improve perceived comfort, but softness alone does not ensure that your heel is held securely or that your arch is supported in the way you need.

The directory entry does not establish current width availability, gender-specific fit details or retailer inventory. Confirm those on the current product page. If you use orthotics, remove the factory insole when possible and check that the replacement does not crowd your toes or raise your heel enough to cause slipping.
Vionic 23Walk: an orthotic-style footbed approach
Vionic 23Walk appears in APMA’s women’s athletic-footwear directory and is the most directly orthotic-style option in this group. It suits wearers who prefer to feel a defined footbed under the arch instead of relying mainly on a stable midsole.
That pronounced shape can be useful when it matches your arch, but it can also feel intrusive when the contact point is too far forward, too high or too narrow. Try it with the socks you normally wear and spend enough time walking to distinguish initial unfamiliarity from persistent pressure.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

APMA directory inclusion does not establish that 23Walk is better than another model or that it treats a condition. Confirm the exact women’s version, available widths, insole removability and return policy before purchase.

HOKA Arahi 8: a stability-oriented comparison
HOKA Arahi 8 appears in APMA’s men’s arch-support results. It is a useful comparison when you want an athletic stability design rather than a traditional walking shoe. The directory identifies the model in a men’s category; verify whether the current product page offers the size, width and version you need.
Use the Arahi 8 as a candidate for exercise walking, commuting and daily athletic wear when you want structured guidance with a modern trainer profile. The APMA listing does not provide a cushioning rating, durability result or evidence that it outperforms other models, so evaluate those qualities in person or through the current manufacturer specifications.
HOKA Clifton 10: cushioning-first athletic comfort
Clifton 10 appears in APMA’s current women’s athletic-footwear results and represents the cushioning-oriented side of the comparison. It is a logical starting point for travel, long recreational walks and users who dislike firm walking platforms.
A soft shoe can feel excellent for the first few minutes yet become tiring if the heel moves or the forefoot bends at the wrong place. Check the entire fit rather than judging only the foam sensation. If you need a strongly contoured footbed, Clifton’s cushioning emphasis may not replace an orthotic-style design; test the insole and available depth with your own insert.

ASICS GEL-KAYANO 32 also appears in APMA’s current women’s athletic-footwear results and provides a stability-oriented counterpoint to Clifton 10. Consider it when you want an athletic shoe with more guidance than a neutral-feeling cushioned trainer.
Directory acceptance is the established evidence here. It does not establish comparative superiority, pain relief or medical efficacy. Confirm the current model’s fit, width and outsole details, especially if you walk outdoors in wet conditions or need a particular toe-box shape.

Match the shoe to your walking situation
Standing and working on hard floors
Prioritize a secure heel, a stable base and cushioning that does not feel unstable under load. The Addiction Walker 2 is the most support-focused starting point in this list. If it feels too heavy, compare the Adrenaline GTS 23 or a stability-oriented athletic model, but keep the heel and midfoot fit as your non-negotiables.
Exercise walking and faster movement
Athletic models generally make more sense than a heavy work shoe. Compare the Adrenaline GTS 23 for a balance of support and softness, the Arahi 8 or GEL-KAYANO 32 for a stability-oriented approach, and the 1080v15 or Clifton 10 when cushioning is your priority.

Travel combines long mileage, unfamiliar surfaces and limited opportunities to change shoes. Choose the model that remains comfortable after a sustained walk, not the one that feels most impressive in a two-minute fitting. Plush options such as the 1080v15 or Clifton 10 may suit travelers who prefer softness; a structured model may feel more controlled if your feet tire in flexible shoes.
Wet-weather or mixed surfaces
Do not infer traction or water resistance from the brand name or support category. Inspect the current outsole pattern, rubber coverage and upper materials for the exact model and generation. A supportive shoe that slips on your usual surface is not a successful alternative.
Casual daily wear
For errands and short walks, comfort and appearance may matter as much as maximum support. Still check that the shoe does not squeeze your toes or allow heel movement. If you alternate between casual and exercise use, select the model that fits the more demanding activity; a shoe that works only for brief errands may not hold up for a full day.
How to choose the right support level
Use your symptoms and experience as clues, not as a diagnosis. A low arch does not automatically mean you need the strongest stability shoe, and a high arch does not automatically mean you need the softest cushioning. Your gait, foot shape, previous injuries, footwear tolerance and orthotic use all affect the result.
- Choose maximum-support construction when your current flexible shoes feel unstable during long standing or walking and you prefer a firm, controlled platform.
- Choose structured athletic stability when you want guidance in a lighter shoe for exercise, commuting or travel.
- Choose plush cushioning when impact sensation is your main complaint and a neutral-feeling platform remains stable on your feet.
- Choose an orthotic-style footbed when you specifically prefer a defined contour and it matches your arch without creating pressure.
If pain, numbness, swelling or recurring blisters persist, stop treating the shoe as a self-diagnosis tool and seek a podiatrist or other qualified clinician. A specialist fitting is particularly sensible when ordinary sizing changes have not solved the problem.

Fitting procedure: test every candidate before keeping it
- Define the real use case. Bring the socks, braces and orthotics you will actually wear. A shoe that fits barefoot or with thin try-on socks may fail during a work shift.
- Measure both feet late in the day. Feet commonly change size during hours of standing. Use the larger foot to choose length and make sure the smaller foot can be secured without excessive tightening.
- Check length. With your heel seated, leave comfortable space in front of the longest toe. Your toes should not touch the front when you walk downhill or stop suddenly.
- Check width and toe-box volume. Toes should spread without rubbing the sides or top. Do not use a longer size to compensate for a narrow width; that can create heel slip.
- Check the heel and midfoot. Lace the shoe normally and walk. The heel should remain controlled without painful pressure, while the midfoot should feel held rather than pinched.
- Assess the arch contact. A supportive sensation should be consistent, not a sharp ridge under one small area. Persistent pressure, tingling or rubbing is a reason to try another shape.
- Walk on representative surfaces. Test stairs, turns and the pace you normally use. If possible, walk long enough to reveal heat, rubbing or fatigue before the return window closes.
- Review the insole and orthotic fit. If the insole is removable, compare the factory footbed with your orthotic. Confirm that the insert lies flat and does not reduce toe room or destabilize the heel.
- Use the return policy as part of the test. Keep packaging, follow the retailer’s wear rules and verify whether the seller is authorized. Return terms vary and can be more important than a small price difference.
Orthotics, insoles and break-in decisions
A built-in supportive footbed and a prescribed orthotic are not interchangeable. If a clinician gave you an orthotic, ask whether it should replace the factory insole and whether the shoe has enough depth. Adding an insert on top of a thick insole can crowd the forefoot and raise the heel.
Do not force a painful break-in period. Mild unfamiliarity with a new contour can settle, but sharp pressure, numbness, skin damage or worsening pain indicates a fit problem. Alternate with a known comfortable pair while you evaluate a new model, and avoid making several footwear changes at once if you are trying to identify the source of discomfort.
Understanding APMA listings
The American Podiatric Medical Association directory is useful for finding models that have received the association’s Seal listing, but the directory is not a head-to-head performance test. The current pages reviewed for this guide displayed 627 women’s athletic-footwear items and 406 men’s arch-support items at crawl time in 2026. Those counts show the breadth of the directory, not a ranking.

The listing category does not by itself establish that a model is available in every width, suitable for every gendered size range, or effective for a particular medical condition.
Brooks’ statement about APMA recognition for its listed orthopedic walking styles is likewise a description of the company’s recognized products. Treat all Seal references as one piece of selection evidence, then complete your own fit and use-case checks.
Price, availability and model-generation checks
Prices and stock change by country, retailer, color, size and promotion. Before paying, verify the exact model name and generation; a retailer may show an older version beside the current one. Check the seller, shipping cost, return window, return-wear restrictions and whether exchanges are allowed for a different width.
Do not assume that a directory listing or a manufacturer technology name guarantees current inventory. The APMA entry for 1080v15, for example, does not state the widths or retailer details you will find at checkout. The same verification applies to 23Walk, Arahi 8, Clifton 10 and GEL-KAYANO 32.

Common mistakes and fixes
- Buying by arch label alone: “Arch support” can mean an insole contour or whole-shoe stability. Compare both and select the one that matches your sensation and gait.
- Ignoring width: A supportive shoe cannot work if the forefoot is compressed. Try a different width before increasing length.
- Testing only on carpet: Carpet hides heel movement and traction problems. Walk on the surfaces you use every day.
- Assuming softer is always better: Excess softness can feel unstable. Compare a plush model with a structured one during a longer walk.
- Adding an orthotic without checking depth: Remove the factory insole when appropriate and confirm that the insert does not crowd the toes.
- Keeping a painful pair because it needs breaking in: Persistent pressure, numbness or blisters signal a poor match, not a requirement to persevere.
- Skipping professional advice for persistent pain: Shoes can improve comfort but are not a diagnosis or treatment for an underlying condition.
Practical verdict
Start with the Brooks Addiction Walker 2 if your first requirement is maximum support for standing and walking. Choose the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 23 when you want a lighter athletic shoe with the support and cushioning technologies Brooks describes. For a soft, athletic feel, investigate New Balance 1080v15 or HOKA Clifton 10; for a more structured footbed, try Vionic 23Walk; and for stability-oriented athletic designs, compare HOKA Arahi 8 and ASICS GEL-KAYANO 32.
Whichever model you test, bring your normal socks and orthotics, confirm width and return terms, and judge the shoe after representative walking rather than a brief try-on. Fit, support, cushioning and grip have to work together for your feet.
