RuboCop, Standard Ruby, Syntax Tree, Rufo, and the Prettier Ruby plugin are the serious alternatives to rubyfmt. The right choice depends on whether you need formatting only or linting as well, whether your team wants a fixed style or detailed configuration, and which Ruby, Node, editor, and CI environments your project already uses.

There is no documented universal winner. These tools take different approaches, so select one by matching its workflow to your repository rather than by assuming every formatter will produce the same output.

What rubyfmt provides—and why teams look elsewhere

rubyfmt is an opinionated Ruby formatter written in Rust. Its project documentation covers command-line formatting, files and directories, standard input, ignore files, editor integrations, and RuboCop integration. That makes it a practical baseline for teams that want formatting without designing a large rule set.

Teams usually investigate alternatives for one of four reasons:

  • They want formatting and broader static analysis in one configurable tool.
  • They want a fixed, shared style with fewer rule debates.
  • They prefer a Ruby-native formatter with a library, plugins, and language-server support.
  • They already use Prettier for other languages and want Ruby in the same formatting pipeline.

rubyfmt’s README says its original author is no longer working on open source in spare time, while other contributors continue work on the project. That is a maintenance note, not a declaration that the project is abandoned. Check the repository’s current activity and compatibility before making a long-term migration decision.

Quick comparison

Tool Primary approach Configuration model Best fit
RuboCop Linting plus formatting Extensive .rubocop.yml configuration and autocorrection Teams that want style rules, diagnostics, and corrections under one system
Standard Ruby RuboCop-based linting and formatting Fixed shared configuration, with plugins and extended configurations Teams that prefer adopting a preset over negotiating individual rules
Syntax Tree Standalone Ruby formatter and library Plugins, ignore comments, and configurable print width Ruby-focused projects needing CLI, library, editor, or language-server integration
Rufo Opinionated formatter Little configuration; aims for one consistent format Projects willing to accept a low-configuration style and running supported Ruby
@prettier/plugin-ruby Ruby formatting inside Prettier Prettier options combined with Syntax Tree behavior Repositories already standardized on Prettier and able to provide Ruby and Node

The meaningful comparison is not a popularity ranking. Evaluate format-only versus lint-and-format scope, fixed versus configurable style, runtime requirements, editor and CI integration, overlap with existing RuboCop checks, and the amount of change a migration creates in your codebase.

Choose by the decision your team needs to make

When formatting and linting belong together

Choose RuboCop when formatting is only one part of a wider quality policy. It can enforce configurable cops, report violations, and apply autocorrections. This is useful when different directories need different rules, when the project has a documented .rubocop.yml, or when CI should check more than whitespace and layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When reducing style discussion is the priority

Choose Standard Ruby when the team would rather accept a maintained preset than debate every RuboCop option. Its fixed configuration is the central distinction; it is not merely RuboCop with a smaller list of checks.

When you want a Ruby-first formatter

Choose Syntax Tree when you want a standalone command-line tool and library, editor integrations, format checking, plugins, and a configurable print width. It is also the direct alternative to consider when a project is evaluating the Ruby formatter underneath the Prettier plugin without adopting the rest of the JavaScript-based workflow.

When minimal configuration is a feature

Choose Rufo when the project wants an opinionated “one true format” approach and can run Ruby 3.0 or later. The trade-off is less control over stylistic exceptions.

When Prettier already governs the repository

Choose @prettier/plugin-ruby when the repository already runs Prettier for JavaScript, TypeScript, JSON, CSS, or similar files. It keeps Ruby in the same command and editor model, but it adds both Node and Ruby as prerequisites. A project adopting Prettier solely for Ruby should evaluate Syntax Tree directly instead.

RuboCop: the configurable lint-and-format platform

RuboCop is the broadest option in this group. Its documentation describes support for every major Ruby implementation, configurable cops, autocorrection, and different configurations across parts of a codebase. It can therefore replace a formatter-only workflow when the team also wants naming, complexity, metrics, style, and other static checks.

Why it may be a better rubyfmt alternative

  • One policy file: project rules live in .rubocop.yml, rather than in a formatter with little or no customization.
  • Selective adoption: teams can enable, disable, or configure individual cops and apply different settings to different paths.
  • Autocorrection: supported violations can be corrected automatically, while non-correctable findings remain visible for review.
  • Ruby-version awareness: the documentation advises specifying or discovering the target Ruby version so checks match the syntax and APIs the project actually supports.

What to check before adopting it

Decide which cops are authoritative and which corrections are safe to run automatically. In an existing repository, a configuration can help establish a baseline, but it should be treated as a migration aid rather than a permanent excuse to ignore findings. Review generated files, vendored code, and directories that intentionally follow different conventions.

RuboCop is a strong choice if a forum-style question about whether a formatter understands .rubocop.yml reflects your actual requirement: the configuration is native to RuboCop itself. It is less attractive when the team wants formatting with no lint policy or wants every project to use exactly the same style without maintaining rule choices.

Standard Ruby: a fixed RuboCop-derived style

Standard Ruby uses RuboCop as its foundation but supplies a fixed configuration. The standardrb executable performs checks, and standardrb --fix applies automatic corrections. Plugins and extended configurations are available, including integrations such as standard-rails.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why teams choose Standard Ruby

  • Fewer style negotiations: the project adopts the Standard preset instead of deciding every cop setting.
  • Familiar RuboCop mechanics: it retains a RuboCop-based diagnostic and correction model.
  • Useful Rails extensions: plugins can extend the baseline where a framework needs additional checks.

Where its fixed policy matters

Standard Ruby is not the right fit merely because it is “RuboCop with fewer checks.” Its defining trade-off is that the style configuration is intentionally fixed. Confirm that the preset suits the repository before formatting a large branch; a team that needs many exceptions may spend more effort working around the preset than it would configuring RuboCop directly.

Use the formatter in CI as a check and reserve automatic fixing for a deliberate migration or a developer’s local workflow. Review the resulting diff, especially in files that combine metaprogramming, embedded languages, or generated content.

Syntax Tree: a Ruby-native formatter with ecosystem hooks

Syntax Tree is built on the internal CRuby parser and is presented as both a command-line interface and a library. Its stree CLI supports formatting and format checking. Documentation also covers editor integrations, plugins, ignore comments, configurable print width, and language-server formatting.

Why Syntax Tree stands out

  • Ruby-first parsing: it uses CRuby’s internal parser rather than placing Ruby inside a general multi-language formatter.
  • Multiple integration levels: a project can invoke the CLI, embed the library, connect an editor, or use language-server formatting.
  • Controlled layout: print width can be configured, while ignore comments and plugins handle project-specific edges.
  • Format checking: CI can verify that files are formatted without rewriting them during the check.

The project documentation says a language-server formatting request typically responds in tens of milliseconds. That is a project statement, not an independent benchmark, so it should not be treated as proof that Syntax Tree is faster than rubyfmt or any other alternative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Running it with RuboCop

Syntax Tree and RuboCop can coexist, but overlapping rules should be addressed. Syntax Tree’s documentation provides a RuboCop configuration that turns off rules covered by the formatter. Start by deciding which tool owns layout, then disable duplicate RuboCop checks rather than allowing two tools to produce conflicting corrections.

When to pick it directly

Syntax Tree is the most natural candidate for a Ruby-only repository that wants a standalone formatter and does not need the full Prettier runtime. It is also the logical option when a team is attracted to the Prettier Ruby plugin’s behavior but does not otherwise use Prettier.

Rufo: opinionated formatting with little configuration

Rufo documents support for Ruby 3.0 and later and describes a low-configuration approach aimed at a single consistent format. That simplicity can be valuable: there are fewer decisions to record, fewer style switches to maintain, and less room for two developers’ editors to disagree.

What to verify first

  • Confirm that every Ruby version used in development, CI, and production tooling meets the documented minimum of 3.0.
  • Format a representative branch, including the oldest syntax and the most metaprogramming-heavy files in the repository.
  • Check whether the project’s required exceptions can be expressed; a formatter designed around one style may not accommodate extensive local preferences.

Rufo is a deliberate choice for teams that value consistency over configurability. If the project must preserve an established style or coordinate with detailed lint rules, RuboCop or Syntax Tree may offer a smoother migration.

@prettier/plugin-ruby: Ruby inside a Prettier workflow

The Prettier Ruby plugin is a wrapper around Syntax Tree. Its README states that it requires Ruby 2.7 or newer and Node 16 or newer, in addition to Prettier. This makes it attractive for a mixed-language repository that already has Node tooling, editor support, and CI commands built around Prettier.

Advantages

  • One formatter command: teams can keep Ruby alongside the other file types already handled by Prettier.
  • Shared editor conventions: developers who already save-format other languages can use the same workflow for Ruby.
  • Syntax Tree behavior: the Ruby formatting engine is based on the Syntax Tree project.

Costs and boundaries

  • Two runtimes: both Ruby and Node must be available wherever formatting runs.
  • Version coordination: the documented minimums must be satisfied by local machines and CI.
  • Unnecessary indirection for Ruby-only projects: the README recommends using Syntax Tree directly when a project is not already using Prettier.

The standalone prettier Ruby gem wrapper is no longer recommended in that documentation. Do not add it to a new project simply to obtain Ruby formatting.

Requirements and workflow fit

Question RuboCop Standard Ruby Syntax Tree Rufo Prettier Ruby plugin
Needs linting as well as formatting? Yes; this is its core advantage Yes, through its RuboCop-based checks Primarily formatting, with integration points for other tools Primarily formatting Formatting within Prettier
Style control Detailed and per-path Fixed preset, plus documented extension mechanisms Print width, plugins, and ignore comments Little configuration Prettier options plus Syntax Tree behavior
Ruby requirement stated in the reviewed documentation Use the target-version setting appropriate to the project Not stated Not stated Ruby 3.0 or later Ruby 2.7 or later
Node requirement Not required by the formatter Not required by the formatter Not required by the standalone tool Not stated Node 16 or later
Distinctive integration .rubocop.yml, cops, autocorrection standardrb, plugins, --fix stree, library, editor and language-server paths Opinionated single-style workflow Prettier’s existing editor and CI ecosystem

“Not stated” means the reviewed documentation did not establish a comparable minimum; it is not evidence that the tool supports every runtime version. Verify the current release before pinning it in a project with an older Ruby or unusual implementation.

A migration procedure that avoids an accidental style rewrite

  1. Record the current contract. List the Ruby versions used by developers and CI, the existing formatter and linter commands, editor save-format settings, ignored paths, generated files, and any .rubocop.yml rules that the team considers intentional.
  2. Choose a representative branch. Include ordinary application code, tests, DSL-heavy files, files with heredocs or embedded templates, generated output, and the oldest syntax the project still supports.
  3. Run the candidate without committing changes. Use its check or dry-run mode where documented. For Standard Ruby, distinguish the checking executable from standardrb --fix; do not mix an automatic rewrite into the first comparison.
  4. Inspect the diff by category. Separate harmless whitespace and line wrapping from changes to comments, heredocs, chaining, blocks, hash syntax, or code that is generated or intentionally excluded. A clean-looking diff is not enough if the formatter touched files that should remain untouched.
  5. Define ownership. If RuboCop remains enabled with Syntax Tree or another formatter, decide which tool owns layout and disable overlapping checks. Otherwise, developers may see one tool undo the other.
  6. Pin the project choice. Record the formatter version in the repository’s dependency management, document the supported Ruby and Node versions where applicable, and make editor settings invoke the same command used by CI.
  7. Format in a dedicated commit. Keep the mechanical rewrite separate from behavior changes. This makes review, cherry-picking, and later debugging substantially easier.
  8. Turn formatting into a check. CI should fail when tracked source is not formatted, while automatic fixing stays in a controlled local or migration command. Add generated and vendored paths to the formatter’s ignore mechanism rather than relying on every contributor to remember exceptions.
  9. Recheck after upgrades. Formatter output can change with parser, runtime, or tool releases. Review release notes and run the candidate against the representative branch before upgrading a repository-wide pin.

Editor and CI integration details

Keep local and automated behavior identical

The most common operational failure is a mismatch between an editor plugin and CI: one uses a different executable, version, working directory, or configuration file. Standardize the command and dependency source, then make the editor invoke that project-local tool where possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Handle mixed toolchains explicitly

A repository can use RuboCop for linting and Syntax Tree for formatting, or Standard Ruby for both checks and corrections. That is workable only when responsibilities are explicit. Disable duplicate layout cops, document which command developers run first, and ensure CI checks the same final state that the editor produces.

Account for runtime boundaries

The Prettier plugin adds Node to a Ruby workflow, while Rufo’s documented minimum is Ruby 3.0. A project with multiple supported Ruby versions should run the formatter in an environment that satisfies the formatter without silently changing the application’s compatibility promise.

Common failure modes and fixes

Large, noisy first diff

Reduce the blast radius by formatting a representative subset, reviewing ignored paths, and committing the mechanical change separately. If the candidate changes intentional local style everywhere, choose a more configurable tool or preserve the existing formatter.

Conflicting corrections

Conflicts usually mean two tools own the same layout rule. Give formatting to one tool and turn off overlapping RuboCop cops using the configuration guidance supplied by the formatter’s documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Unsupported syntax or runtime

Check the project’s target Ruby version and the formatter’s documented requirements. RuboCop specifically advises setting or discovering the target Ruby version; the Prettier plugin requires Ruby 2.7+ and Node 16+; Rufo requires Ruby 3.0+.

Generated files keep changing

Identify generated, vendored, and external directories, then add them to the formatter’s ignore mechanism. Do not solve the problem by asking contributors to remember a manual exclusion.

Prettier adds more infrastructure than expected

If Ruby is the only language that needs formatting, use Syntax Tree directly rather than introducing the Prettier wrapper and its Node dependency. Keep the plugin for repositories that already benefit from a shared Prettier pipeline.

Practical recommendations

  • Choose RuboCop for detailed control, per-directory policy, and linting plus formatting.
  • Choose Standard Ruby when a stable shared preset is more valuable than rule-by-rule customization.
  • Choose Syntax Tree for a standalone Ruby formatter with CLI, library, editor, plugin, and language-server options.
  • Choose Rufo when its low-configuration style fits the project and Ruby 3.0-or-later support is acceptable.
  • Choose @prettier/plugin-ruby when Prettier is already central to the repository and both required runtimes are available.

Whichever option you select, test it on your own representative branch. Documentation establishes capabilities and requirements, but only your codebase can reveal migration churn, syntax edge cases, generated-file boundaries, and whether the resulting style is acceptable to the team.
