For ordinary mobile calls, Phone Link remains the simplest option when your Windows PC and phone can pair over Bluetooth. If your computer has no Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), add a USB Bluetooth adapter. If you want to call over the internet, use WhatsApp Desktop or a separate service such as Google Voice. KDE Connect and AirDroid are better for notifications, messages and device control than for replacing a carrier call.
The right choice depends on what “calling from a PC” means to you: routing your phone’s cellular number through Windows, calling another user inside an internet app, or obtaining a separate VoIP number. Those are different systems with different requirements, costs and emergency-call limitations.
Cellular calls and internet calls are not the same
Before choosing an alternative, identify the type of call you need:
- Phone Link cellular calling: your phone supplies the mobile service and number. Windows acts as the speaker, microphone and dialer while the call is carried between the phone and PC over Bluetooth.
- App-to-app calling: services such as WhatsApp send voice or video over the internet. The other person normally needs the same service.
- VoIP/PSTN calling: a service such as Google Voice supplies a separate online phone number or connects to ordinary telephone numbers. It is not a mirror of the SIM in your handset.
A USB Bluetooth adapter can provide the radio that a desktop lacks, but it cannot provide cellular service. Likewise, an internet calling app cannot automatically dial every mobile number through your phone’s carrier account.

Quick comparison
| Option | What identity makes the call | Connection | Best fit | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phone Link | Your phone’s cellular number | Bluetooth between phone and PC; the phone remains connected to the mobile network | Dialing and answering normal calls from Windows | Requires Bluetooth on both devices and BLE support on the PC; not an emergency-service replacement |
| Google Voice | A separate Google Voice number or linked forwarding number | Internet browser or app | A browser-based number, forwarding and voicemail | Availability and pricing depend on geography; the free version is limited to residents of the contiguous 48 U.S. states |
| WhatsApp Desktop | Your WhatsApp account | Internet | Voice or video calls with contacts who already use WhatsApp | It does not dial arbitrary carrier numbers through your phone’s cellular account |
| KDE Connect | Usually your existing phone and messaging apps | Local network pairing | Notifications, SMS access, clipboard, media control and files | The cited feature set does not establish it as a complete Windows cellular-call replacement |
| AirDroid Personal | Your Android device and its apps | Local or internet connection, depending on the feature | Android screen mirroring, SMS, notifications and file management | Free-plan transfer and device limits; paid upgrades may be required |
1. Phone Link: the baseline when you need your mobile number
Phone Link is not an internet-phone service. Its Calls feature pairs Windows with the phone over Bluetooth, then lets you dial a contact or number, view recent calls and handle the conversation on the PC. Microsoft says Bluetooth must be enabled on both devices and that the PC must support Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).
What you can do
- Open the Calls tab in Phone Link and select a contact or enter a number.
- Answer incoming calls from the PC and use the computer’s microphone and speakers or a headset.
- View up to 100 recent calls, according to Microsoft’s current calling documentation.
What you cannot assume
Phone Link is not a replacement for primary telephone service, and it should not be treated as an emergency-call path. A dead phone battery, disabled Bluetooth radio, excessive distance, power-saving behavior or a failed pairing can interrupt the PC audio path even while the phone itself still has service.
Set it up
- Turn on Bluetooth on both the phone and the Windows PC.
- In Windows, open Settings and go to Bluetooth & devices. Pair the phone with the PC.
- Open Phone Link, choose the calling feature and complete the permissions and pairing prompts shown on both devices.
- In the Calls tab, choose a contact or enter a number, then select the call button.
- When prompted, allow the phone and Windows to use call audio and contacts. Test the microphone before relying on the setup.
If the PC has no Bluetooth
A desktop without Bluetooth or BLE needs a USB Bluetooth adapter for Windows PC. Confirm that the adapter has a current Windows driver and supports the Bluetooth profiles required for hands-free audio. After installing it, restart Bluetooth, pair the phone again and repeat the Phone Link setup. The adapter solves a missing-PC-radio problem; it does not replace the phone’s SIM, mobile plan or network coverage.
Improve call audio
A Bluetooth headset with a microphone for PC calls usually gives a cleaner hands-free path than built-in laptop speakers. Check Windows microphone permissions, select the headset as the input and output device, and confirm that the headset supports the Hands-Free Profile (HFP). Music-focused stereo modes can switch when a call begins, so test the actual call profile rather than judging the headset only with music playback.
2. Google Voice: a separate browser-based phone number
Google Voice is the strongest fit when you want a number that can ring in a browser, forward to other phones and collect voicemail. It is a separate VoIP/PSTN service, not a way to expose the SIM number already in your handset.
Geography and calling rates
The Associated Press reported in 2025 that calls to U.S., Canadian and Puerto Rican numbers are free, while international rates vary. The free version is limited to residents of the contiguous 48 U.S. states. Do not assume that a U.S. feature, number-claiming flow or free calling policy applies in Alaska, Hawaii, other territories or another country.
How calling works
- Create or sign in to an eligible Google account and obtain a Google Voice number where the service is available.
- Open Google Voice in a supported Windows browser and allow microphone access when prompted.
- Use the dialer to enter a destination number, or select a contact from the available address book.
- Configure forwarding and voicemail if you want calls to reach a mobile or desk phone when the browser is closed.
Advantages over Phone Link
- No Bluetooth link to a particular handset is required for browser calling.
- The number can be used from a computer and configured to forward elsewhere.
- Voicemail is managed as part of the service rather than stored only on the mobile phone.
Trade-offs
- The caller identity is the Google Voice number, not automatically your mobile carrier number.
- Eligibility, number availability and international pricing are regional.
- Internet quality and browser microphone permissions determine call quality.
- Emergency calling should be evaluated against the service’s current terms and local requirements; do not assume that a browser VoIP account behaves like a mobile carrier line.
3. WhatsApp Desktop: best for contacts already on WhatsApp
WhatsApp Desktop is useful when the people you call already use WhatsApp. It makes internet voice and video calls from a Windows application, but it does not turn your PC into a dialer for arbitrary carrier numbers through the phone’s cellular account.

When it is the right choice
WhatsApp avoids Bluetooth pairing and works well for family, friends or teams that already share the service. Both parties need internet access, and the other person generally needs a WhatsApp account. It is less suitable when you must reach a business landline, a person who does not use WhatsApp or a public-service number.
4. KDE Connect: device integration rather than a carrier-call replacement
KDE Connect is an open-source, local-network companion for linking a phone and a Windows computer. Its useful features include notifications, SMS access or mirroring, clipboard sharing, media control and file transfers.
Typical setup
- Install KDE Connect on Windows and on the phone.
- Put both devices on the same trusted local network.
- Open the app on each device, select the other device and request pairing.
- Accept the pairing request, then enable only the plugins you need, such as notifications, SMS or clipboard.
Why choose it
- You want one keyboard and screen for notifications, messages and files.
- You prefer an open-source companion that operates on your local network.
- You do not need to place or answer the phone’s cellular call from Windows.
The documented feature set does not establish KDE Connect as a complete Windows cellular-call replacement. Treat it as a companion layer; keep the phone available for the actual carrier call.
5. AirDroid Personal: Android management with calling-adjacent features
AirDroid Personal focuses on Android management. Its Windows and macOS clients and browser console can provide screen mirroring, SMS access, notifications and file management. That makes it attractive when your goal is to operate more of the phone from a large screen rather than simply route call audio.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What to check before choosing it
- Whether your Android model permits the screen-control or mirroring features you need.
- Whether the Windows client, browser console or both fit your workflow.
- How the current free plan limits transfers, linked devices or remote features.
- Whether a paid upgrade is required for your expected file volume or number of devices.
The cited comparison reports free-plan transfer and device limits and paid upgrades. Verify the current limits in your account and region before moving a work workflow to the service. AirDroid can expose messaging and phone-management functions, but it should not be presented as a guaranteed replacement for Bluetooth-routed cellular calling.
Which option fits your situation?
You need your existing mobile number
Start with Phone Link. Check Bluetooth and BLE first, then add a USB adapter if the desktop lacks the required radio. Use a headset with HFP support if the built-in microphone or speakers are unreliable.
You want a number independent of your phone
Evaluate Google Voice where you are eligible. Compare the service’s number availability, forwarding behavior, voicemail, international rates and any restrictions that apply to your region.

Your contacts already use one messaging app
Use WhatsApp Desktop for app-to-app calls. It is usually simpler than persuading everyone to install a new desktop telephony system, but it will not reach arbitrary telephone numbers through the cellular account.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You mainly want notifications, SMS and files
Choose KDE Connect for a local, open-source companion workflow. Choose AirDroid when Android mirroring and broader device management matter more than a minimal local integration layer.
You are equipping a business phone system
A consumer companion app may not provide the controls a business needs. Assess a business telephony service separately for subscription cost, number ownership, administration, SMS, number porting, recording and compliance, user provisioning and international calling. Do not select a consumer app merely because it can place a test call from a browser.
Requirements checklist before you buy or install anything
- Windows version and drivers: install current Windows updates and the manufacturer’s Bluetooth or audio drivers.
- Bluetooth capability: for Phone Link, verify Bluetooth on both devices and BLE support on the PC.
- Audio hardware: use a headset with a microphone for frequent calls; verify HFP support.
- Permissions: allow microphone access for voice calls and camera access for video calls in Windows privacy settings.
- Network: internet calling needs a stable connection; KDE Connect needs reachable devices on the same local network for its local features.
- Account and region: check number eligibility, paid tiers, international rates and country restrictions before depending on a service.
- Emergency planning: keep a working phone or other appropriate emergency method. Neither a Bluetooth accessory nor an internet app should be assumed to provide emergency service.
Troubleshooting common failures
Phone Link cannot find the phone
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on both devices and that the phone is not connected exclusively to another computer.
- Remove the old Bluetooth pairing from Windows and the phone, restart both devices and pair again.
- Check that the PC adapter supports BLE and that its Windows driver is installed.
- Keep the phone near the PC and temporarily disable battery-saving restrictions that suspend Bluetooth activity.
The call connects but there is no sound
- Open Windows sound settings and select the intended headset or microphone.
- Check microphone privacy permission for Phone Link, WhatsApp or the browser.
- Disconnect other Bluetooth audio devices that may have captured the hands-free profile.
- End the call, reconnect the headset and place a test call again.
WhatsApp calling is unavailable
- Confirm the desktop is linked by scanning a fresh QR code.
- Check that the contact has WhatsApp and that both devices have internet access.
- Allow microphone permission for audio or both microphone and camera permissions for video.
- Update the desktop app and phone app if the call buttons are missing.
Google Voice calling fails in the browser
- Allow microphone access for the site in the browser’s permissions.
- Verify that the account and destination are eligible under the service’s regional rules.
- Check the applicable international rate before retrying a non-U.S. destination.
- Test another network if the browser loads but audio drops or becomes one-way.
Privacy, reliability and safety considerations
Every option moves some part of the call through an account, a local pairing or an internet service. Review which contacts, messages, notifications and files you expose before enabling broad permissions. KDE Connect can be kept local by limiting it to a trusted network. AirDroid and browser-based services require closer attention to account security, linked devices and remote-access permissions.
Bluetooth calling can fail because of distance, power management, radio interference or a damaged pairing. Internet calling can fail because of congestion, weak Wi-Fi, blocked permissions, service outages or account restrictions. Feature support can also change with region, phone model, Windows build and app version. Keep the phone itself available when a call is important.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBottom line: choose by the number you need to use
Use Phone Link when you want to place ordinary calls with your existing mobile number and your PC supports Bluetooth Low Energy. Add a USB Bluetooth adapter if the desktop lacks Bluetooth, and use a headset with a microphone for dependable audio. Choose Google Voice when you need a separate browser-based number and are eligible in your region. Choose WhatsApp Desktop when the other person already uses WhatsApp. Choose KDE Connect or AirDroid when notifications, SMS, mirroring and files matter more than replacing the carrier-call path.
