A USB flash drive can make transferring game files convenient, and some board-and-operating-system combinations can boot from USB. Choose based on whether you need to boot the console, store its game library, or read original discs: those are different jobs, and not every storage device supports all three.

Compare options on four points: compatibility with your exact board and OS, capacity and speed for the system and library, how you will load and update files, and whether you need to preserve or read original media. There is no universal benchmark in the cited documentation that ranks microSD against USB storage for every build.
How to choose boot media for a Raspberry Pi
Start with the board and operating system
Check the current setup instructions for your exact board and the installation guide for your chosen emulation OS. Raspberry Pi says all models since Model B+ have a microSD slot and automatically boot from a valid operating-system image on an inserted card. It also notes that storage requirements vary by OS. Match speed and capacity to the system
Raspberry Pi says faster read and write speeds improve overall performance. Its published minimum recommendations are 32 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Desktop and Full, and 8 GB for Raspberry Pi OS Lite; these are guidance for those Raspberry Pi OS editions, not universal minimums for retro-gaming distributions. The same documentation notes a supported card capacity below 2 TB. Check the requirements for your chosen OS rather than treating any of these figures as a one-size-fits-all recommendation. Separate booting from file transfer when useful
A microSD card can boot the console while a USB flash drive is used to move game files. That division can make the workflow simpler, but the USB method depends on the software’s instructions. Do not assume that because a system reads files from USB it can also boot from the same drive.
How to transfer game files with a USB drive
RetroPie tutorial method
- Format a USB flash drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- Create a folder named
retropieon the drive. - Connect it to the RetroPie system and allow RetroPie to create its folder structure.
- Copy files into the appropriate subfolder under
/retropie/roms. - Reboot after the transfer, as described in the tutorial.

When original optical discs still make sense
Digital storage is not a replacement for reading original optical media. If your project is about disc-based emulation or preservation, a compatible optical drive may still be necessary. Raspberry Pi Official Magazine’s example uses a DVD-ROM drive connected to a Raspberry Pi 4 through a SATA-to-USB adapter. Game files, copyright, and lawful access
Storage choice does not determine whether a game file is lawful to obtain or use. RetroPie’s tutorial warns against pirated content and points readers toward homebrew games on itch.io and official Sega ROMs on Steam as possible sources. Owning a physical game does not, by itself, establish that downloading a ROM or making a copy is lawful in every jurisdiction or circumstance. RetroPie: Transferring ROMs

Other hardware in the build
A USB controller is an input device, not an alternative storage medium. The RetroPie tutorial uses a generic USB game controller and says wired Xbox and PlayStation controllers can also be used; wireless controllers without their own dongle may require troubleshooting.
