The most credible alternative to nuclear power for a large AI data center is not one technology. Build a portfolio of new solar and wind, batteries and other storage, stronger transmission, geothermal or hydropower where local conditions support them, and aggressive efficiency and workload flexibility. Natural gas can cover near-term dispatchable gaps, but it remains fossil generation and should be treated as a bridge rather than a zero-emissions solution.
This matters because data centers consumed 415 TWh of electricity—about 1.5% of global use—in 2024. The International Energy Agency (IEA) projects roughly 945 TWh by 2030. A typical AI-focused facility uses as much electricity as 100,000 households, while the largest projects under construction could use 20 times that amount.
Why AI workloads need a different power strategy
AI training and inference are unusually demanding because thousands of accelerators can operate simultaneously and then change power draw quickly as jobs start, stop, or move between clusters. The result is both a very large annual energy requirement and steep hourly ramps. A plan that matches annual consumption with renewable certificates but cannot meet the facility’s load every hour may still depend heavily on fossil generation from the grid.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe IEA says affordable, reliable and sustainable electricity will be a crucial determinant of AI development. For operators, “reliable” means maintaining voltage, frequency, cooling and compute-service levels through weather events, transmission congestion, equipment failures and sudden workload changes—not merely buying enough energy over a year.

What the scale means in practice
- Global data-center demand was 415 TWh in 2024 and is expected to approach 945 TWh by 2030 (IEA, 2025).
- Half of the projected growth in data-center electricity demand is expected to be met by renewables. The IEA estimates renewable generation will grow by more than 450 TWh to serve data-center demand through 2035.
- In the United States, renewables supply about 24% of data-center electricity today and are expected to add 110 TWh between 2024 and 2030 (IEA, 2025).
- About 20% of planned data-center projects could face delays because of grid-connection risks. New transmission lines can take four to eight years in advanced economies.
These figures favor a staged portfolio: secure available capacity now, add firm low-emissions resources as projects mature, and reduce the size and speed of new demand wherever software and hardware allow.
How the alternatives compare
No option wins on every criterion. The table shows the decisions that should be made for a specific site, grid and workload rather than treating “clean power” as a single product.
| Option | Firm capacity and hourly matching | Emissions and lifecycle issues | Deployment and site constraints | Storage, grid and cooling implications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solar and wind with storage | Variable output; batteries, geographic diversity, demand response and grid purchases are needed for continuous service. | Very low operating emissions; manufacturing, land and transmission impacts require lifecycle and local assessment. | Among the fastest scalable choices where land, interconnection and permitting are available. | Short-duration batteries handle ramps; longer gaps require additional duration, firm generation or a larger grid connection. |
| Geothermal | Generally firm, with geothermal plants operating at about a 90% capacity factor. | Low operational emissions; drilling, water, induced-seismicity and resource-management risks are site-specific. | Conventional resources are geographically limited; enhanced projects add exploration and drilling uncertainty. | Can serve continuous loads directly. Cold Underground Thermal Energy Storage (Cold UTES) can shift cooling demand and reduce peak capacity needs. |
| Hydropower and existing grid resources | Firm and, in many systems, flexible output; depends on reservoir and river conditions. | Low-carbon generation but affected by drought, ecosystem impacts and competing water uses. | Highly location-constrained; existing dams, retired plants and nearby substations may shorten development. | Reservoir flexibility can complement wind and solar; transmission and water constraints remain decisive. |
| Batteries and long-duration storage | Excellent for rapid ramps and outages; duration determines whether storage covers hours, days or seasons. | No combustion during operation; degradation, fire safety, mineral supply and manufacturing impacts must be managed. | Can be installed at a data center, renewable project or grid node, subject to interconnection and safety permits. | Provides frequency and other grid services. Multi-day or seasonal deficits need long-duration technologies or firm generation. |
| Natural gas, with or without carbon capture | Dispatchable and familiar; useful where grid connections are delayed. | Combustion carbon dioxide, methane leakage and local air pollution remain. Carbon capture only changes the result if transport and permanent storage are credible. | Turbine lead times, fuel pipelines, air permits, water and fuel-price exposure affect schedule and cost. | Can back up renewables and batteries, but is not a clean substitute by itself. |
| Efficiency and flexible computing | Reduces load rather than generating electricity; cannot replace firm supply for nonstop service. | Usually the lowest-impact way to avoid new generation and grid construction. | Available at almost every site through hardware, software, cooling and siting decisions. | Workload scheduling, server utilization, thermal storage and spare capacity can flatten peaks and lower storage requirements. |
Solar and wind plus storage: the fastest scalable portfolio
For most new projects, utility-scale solar and land-based wind are the quickest way to add large quantities of low-emissions electricity. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) identifies solar, land-based wind, battery storage and efficiency as some of the most rapidly scalable and cost-competitive responses to rising data-center demand.
How to make variable generation serve a 24/7 load
A wind or solar power-purchase agreement (PPA) that covers a facility’s annual megawatt-hours is not the same as hourly carbon-free operation. A data center can buy renewable energy credits for every MWh it consumes while drawing fossil-backed grid power at night or during a wind lull. Hourly matching requires measured production and consumption, credible accounting, and enough firm or stored power to cover the periods when renewable output is low.
- Map the load by hour. Separate steady base load from training bursts, inference peaks, cooling demand and planned maintenance. Use at least a full year of weather and workload data.
- Build a geographically diverse renewable mix. Wind and solar in different weather regimes reduce the chance that one storm or calm period removes all output.
- Co-locate storage and secure grid capacity. Batteries can absorb excess renewable output, supply fast ramps and bridge short outages while the grid or a firm plant responds.
- Contract for residual energy. Use grid supply, hydropower, geothermal, long-duration storage or another dispatchable resource for the hours that the renewable portfolio cannot cover.
- Verify hourly performance. Track actual generation, storage state of charge and facility consumption rather than relying only on annual certificates.
Where this approach works best
- Regions with strong solar or wind resources, available land and an interconnection queue that can deliver capacity on the data-center schedule.
- Sites able to connect to several transmission paths or procure power from multiple balancing areas.
- Workloads that can move training jobs by hours or days without violating service-level agreements.
Its weaknesses are also clear: a solar-and-wind portfolio needs more nameplate capacity than the data center’s peak load, and transmission or storage can become the schedule bottleneck. A low-price energy contract is not a guarantee of firm capacity.
Geothermal: a realistic firm alternative where geology cooperates
Geothermal is the closest non-nuclear option to a continuously operating, low-emissions plant when a commercially viable resource is available. DOE states that geothermal plants generally achieve a capacity factor of about 90%, allowing steady output around the clock. That profile fits an AI facility’s base load better than an isolated solar or wind project.
Conventional versus enhanced geothermal
Conventional projects use naturally permeable hot rock and accessible fluids. Enhanced geothermal systems seek to create or improve permeability where heat exists but natural reservoirs are inadequate. Enhanced designs could broaden the geographic market, but they carry greater exploration, drilling, reservoir and financing risk. A data-center developer should not count a prospective resource as firm capacity until test wells, reservoir modeling, permitting and long-term production evidence support it.

Cooling integration with Cold UTES
Cooling can account for a substantial share of a high-density facility’s electricity and can create its own peaks. DOE describes Cold Underground Thermal Energy Storage (Cold UTES) as a way to store cooling capacity underground, shift peak cooling demand and provide seasonal storage. The technique can reduce the grid connection and battery capacity required for cooling, but it depends on suitable geology, aquifers or borefields, building design and local water rules.
Questions to resolve before choosing geothermal
- Is the heat resource proven at the required temperature and flow rate, or is the project still exploratory?
- Can drilling rigs, wells, pipelines and generation equipment be permitted and built within the data-center schedule?
- What water withdrawals, reinjection obligations and induced-seismicity controls apply?
- Will the project export power through a constrained interconnection, or can it serve the campus directly?
- Are exploration and drilling risks allocated to a developer with an adequate balance sheet and insurance?
Geothermal can replace a large portion of nuclear-like baseload at the right site, but it is not a universal substitute. Resource quality and drilling economics determine whether its high capacity factor translates into bankable capacity.
Hydropower and existing grid assets
Hydropower can supply firm electricity and, where reservoirs are available, adjust output to complement variable renewables. DOE’s whole-system strategy includes hydropower infrastructure, grid expansion and redevelopment of retired generation sites. Reusing an existing substation, transmission corridor or industrial site can shorten the schedule compared with building an entirely new connection.
Limits that a contract cannot remove
- Hydropower is geographically constrained; the nearest suitable project may be hundreds of miles from the data center.
- Drought, changing snowpack and reservoir rules can reduce output during the same heat events that increase cooling demand.
- River ecosystems, downstream users, irrigation and drinking-water needs compete with electricity production.
- Transmission upgrades may still take four to eight years even when the generating plant already exists.
Existing grid resources can be valuable during a transition, but the contract should specify the capacity, deliverability, outage rules and emissions accounting the facility is actually receiving.

Batteries and long-duration storage: matching duration to the problem
Storage is essential for smoothing renewable output and the rapid swings of AI workloads. The IEA estimates that 20–25 GW of battery storage could be installed in data centers globally by 2030. That figure is a global projection, not a sizing rule for an individual campus.
What short-duration batteries do well
- Bridge a few minutes of interruption while grid controls or generators respond.
- Follow accelerator-driven ramps without forcing the utility to overbuild spinning capacity.
- Shift solar production from midday into the evening and provide frequency or reserve services.
- Reduce demand charges and avoid brief peaks that would otherwise require a larger interconnection.
When longer duration is required
A battery sized for two to four hours cannot cover a wind drought lasting several days or a seasonal mismatch between renewable production and load. Multi-day and seasonal needs may require flow batteries, compressed-air, thermal, hydrogen-based systems, expanded hydropower, firm geothermal or a dispatchable fuel. The right duration comes from an hourly production-and-load model, not from the battery’s nameplate megawatt rating alone.
Storage due diligence
- Measure usable energy after temperature, reserve and degradation limits—not just the manufacturer’s initial rating.
- Specify augmentation or replacement schedules as cells age.
- Design fire detection, separation, suppression, emergency access and first-responder procedures.
- Check mineral sourcing, recycling and end-of-life responsibilities.
- Confirm that the interconnection allows charging and discharging at the planned power level.
Storage can make a renewable portfolio more reliable, but it cannot create energy that is absent for a prolonged period. Pair it with firm resources and transmission diversity.

Natural gas as a bridge, not a clean endpoint
Natural gas currently supplies more than 40% of U.S. data-center electricity and is the largest source of additional supply through 2030, according to the IEA. Gas turbines can be dispatched when renewable output falls or a grid connection is delayed, which explains their near-term appeal.
What a gas-backed plan must disclose
- Expected carbon dioxide emissions at the plant’s actual duty cycle, including start-up and part-load operation.
- Methane leakage assumptions across production, processing and pipelines.
- Fuel-price and supply interruption exposure.
- Air-quality permits, local noise, water use and turbine delivery dates.
- Whether carbon capture has a financed transport network, a permitted injection site and durable monitoring—not merely an aspiration.
Carbon capture can reduce stack emissions, but it does not automatically eliminate upstream methane or guarantee permanent storage. If the objective is zero operational emissions, unabated gas does not meet it; if the objective is schedule security during a renewable build-out, gas may be a temporary capacity tool with a defined retirement or replacement plan.
Efficiency and flexible computing reduce the generation you must build
Every avoided megawatt shortens the interconnection queue and reduces land, water and storage requirements. Efficiency is therefore a supply strategy, even though it cannot replace firm power for a continuously operating service.
Hardware and software measures
- Choose accelerators and servers for performance per watt at the model sizes actually deployed.
- Raise utilization by consolidating jobs, reducing idle reservation and sharing capacity across teams.
- Use quantization, distillation, batching and caching when quality and latency targets allow.
- Schedule flexible training for hours with abundant renewable output or lower grid carbon intensity.
- Locate new clusters where substations and generation already have headroom instead of treating a constrained site as fixed.
Cooling and thermal flexibility
Direct liquid cooling, higher supply-water temperatures, free cooling where climate permits and thermal storage can reduce cooling electricity. Cold UTES can shift cooling energy over longer periods, while chilled-water tanks can cover shorter peaks. Any shift must preserve chip-temperature limits, humidity controls and service-level agreements.
Reliability boundaries
Inference serving emergency, financial or safety-critical users may not be interruptible. Training jobs, model evaluation and some batch analytics often can move or pause. Define these classes before signing power contracts; otherwise a nominally flexible load will still be treated as firm and the expected savings will not materialize.

- Build an hourly portfolio model. Simulate at least a full weather year and stress cases such as a prolonged wind lull, cloudy winter week, drought and transmission outage.
- Layer resources. Use efficiency first, then solar and wind, batteries for ramps, firm geothermal or hydropower where feasible, and grid or dispatchable backup for residual risk.
- Set an hourly clean-energy target. Define how storage charging, grid imports, certificates and curtailment are counted. Annual renewable accounting alone does not prove 24/7 carbon-free supply.
- Stage construction. Match compute expansion to generation, storage and transmission milestones instead of energizing a campus whose power plan is still theoretical.
- Verify operations. Meter the facility and each contracted resource at compatible time intervals, publish outage and emissions data, and revise the portfolio as workloads and grid conditions change.
How much storage does an AI data center need?
There is no universal battery size. A facility needs enough usable power (MW) to cover its fastest ramp and enough usable energy (MWh) to cover the longest interruption or renewable shortfall that the reliability plan assigns to storage.
For example, a campus may use a short-duration battery for automatic transfer and frequency control, a larger battery to shift solar into evening inference, and a separate long-duration resource for multi-day weather events. The calculation must include reserve state of charge, round-trip losses, temperature effects, degradation and the portion of load that can be curtailed. A 100 MW battery can mean 100 MWh, 400 MWh or more depending on its duration; quoting only the MW figure hides the central design choice.

Cost, land, water and permitting trade-offs
Project cost cannot be reduced to a single technology price. Total system cost includes generation, storage, transmission upgrades, interconnection studies, backup, fuel, land, water, operations, financing and the cost of delaying compute capacity.
| Decision factor | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Firm capacity | How many MW are guaranteed during a renewable drought, equipment outage or extreme temperature event? |
| Hourly matching | Can the portfolio demonstrate supply in every interval, or only annual energy matching? |
| Emissions | Are operational, lifecycle and upstream emissions counted consistently, including methane and storage charging? |
| Land and water | What land, cooling water, reservoir, drilling or underground-storage footprint is required, and who else uses those resources? |
| Schedule | Which permits, turbines, transformers, wells, batteries and transmission upgrades control the in-service date? |
| Local resource quality | Does the site have dependable sun, wind, heat, river flow, fuel delivery and weather diversity? |
| Interconnection | Are network upgrades funded and deliverable, or is the project exposed to queue delays? |
| Cooling integration | Can thermal storage, liquid cooling or geothermal exchange reduce electrical peaks? |
| Financial exposure | How sensitive is the plan to fuel prices, degradation, curtailment, drought, drilling results and carbon policy? |
Common failure modes and fixes
“We bought enough renewable energy certificates, so the facility is 24/7 clean.”
Why it fails: Annual certificates can match MWh on paper while the grid supplies fossil generation during hours without local renewable output. Fix: Use hourly generation and load data, storage accounting and a defined residual-grid policy.
“A battery’s MW rating tells us whether it can cover an outage.”
Why it fails: MW measures instantaneous power, not duration. Fix: Specify usable MWh, reserve margin, degradation and the outage duration the battery is expected to bridge.
“Geothermal is always available once a site looks promising.”
Why it fails: Exploration, drilling and reservoir performance can change the economics. Fix: Require staged testing, production evidence and a schedule that does not count unproven wells as firm capacity.
“Natural gas is clean enough if it is dispatchable.”
Why it fails: Dispatchability does not remove combustion carbon, methane leakage or local pollution. Fix: Publish emissions assumptions, establish a bridge timeframe and verify any carbon-capture transport and storage chain.
“Efficiency will eliminate the need for new firm power.”
Why it fails: Efficiency lowers demand but does not supply electricity during an outage or a windless night. Fix: Combine efficiency with firm generation, storage and transmission.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“The generation project is approved, so the data center can open.”
Why it fails: Transmission and interconnection upgrades can take four to eight years in advanced economies, and roughly one-fifth of planned projects face connection risks. Fix: Tie compute expansion to executed interconnection milestones and test alternative sites or temporary capacity.

Which portfolio fits which objective?
Lowest near-term emissions with rapid growth
Use solar and wind contracts across diverse regions, batteries for ramps and evening shifts, efficiency measures, and firm grid or hydropower support while transmission is expanded.
Highest hourly reliability at a geothermal-capable site
Use geothermal for the base load, storage for ramps and cooling flexibility, and diversified grid connections for contingencies. Keep an alternative supply plan until wells and output are proven.
Fastest schedule where the grid is delayed
Combine on-site or nearby renewables and batteries with existing grid capacity and, if necessary, time-limited natural-gas generation. Treat fuel and emissions exposure as explicit bridge costs.
Smallest new generation requirement
Maximize accelerator utilization, model efficiency, workload shifting, liquid cooling and thermal storage before sizing new generation. This approach still needs firm capacity for the remaining nonstop load.
Bottom line for AI operators
The strongest non-nuclear plan is a measured portfolio, not a symbolic technology choice: reduce and flex the load, add geographically diverse solar and wind, use batteries for rapid changes, secure geothermal or hydropower where local resources are proven, and invest early in transmission and interconnection. Natural gas can protect the construction schedule, but only with a clear emissions and retirement strategy. The cleanest reliable power source is therefore site-dependent; the reliable cleanest system is the one whose hourly performance, storage duration, firm capacity and grid risks have been demonstrated rather than assumed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can solar and batteries power an AI data center 24/7?
They can supply a large share of the energy, but 24/7 service requires hourly load modeling, enough storage duration, geographic diversity and firm grid or generation support for prolonged low-renewable periods.
Is geothermal a realistic replacement for nuclear power for data centers?
Yes at sites with a proven, economic geothermal resource. Its roughly 90% capacity factor suits continuous loads, but exploration, drilling, permitting and resource quality make it unsuitable as a universal solution.
Recommended Free Tools
How much battery storage does an AI data center need?
The requirement depends on peak MW, usable MWh, ramp rates, outage duration, renewable profile, reserve margin and degradation. A MW rating alone cannot determine the needed duration.
Does buying renewable energy certificates make an AI data center carbon-free every hour?
No. Annual certificates match energy on an accounting basis but do not prove that renewable electricity served the facility in every hour. Hourly matching requires interval data, storage accounting and a plan for residual grid supply.
