If you need an alternative to Microsoft’s speech services, choose by task: Google Cloud Speech-to-Text and Amazon Transcribe were both evaluated in a published French transcription benchmark, while Google Cloud Text-to-Speech and Amazon Polly have documented speech-generation features. The evidence does not support one overall winner—or a current accuracy ranking across languages. Test the exact language, audio conditions, and workflow you plan to use.
First, separate transcription from voice generation
Speech-to-text (STT) turns recorded or live speech into text. Text-to-speech (TTS) turns text into generated audio. A provider may suit one job without being the best fit for the other, so compare alternatives within the relevant task rather than treating “speech AI” as one product category.
For either task, confirm support for your exact language and locale, capability, and region. Microsoft’s Azure Speech language-support tables illustrate why: language availability varies by functionality, with separate coverage for speech-to-text and text-to-speech. Apply the same feature-by-feature check when evaluating another provider.

Google Cloud Speech-to-Text
Google Cloud Speech-to-Text is one candidate for replacing Azure speech recognition. It was included in a 2021 study comparing cloud transcription services on French speech, but that study is not a current product comparison. The available evidence here does not establish present-day support for a particular locale, workflow, or transcription feature; verify those details with Google before choosing it.

Amazon Transcribe
Amazon Transcribe was also evaluated in that study. Its reported result is useful as a historical data point, not a prediction of how a current service version will handle your recordings. Check AWS’s current documentation for the exact language, feature, and deployment requirements you need; the study alone does not establish them.
What the published benchmark can—and cannot—tell you
Binbin Xu, Chongyang Tao, Zidu Feng, Youssef Raqui, and Sylvie Ranwez compared Google Cloud Speech-to-Text, Microsoft Azure Cognitive Services, Amazon Transcribe, and IBM Watson Speech to Text using French speech and added noise in a paper dated May 7, 2021. On the paper’s clean French test data, it reported median word error rates of 9% for Azure, 11.76% for Amazon Transcribe, and 14% for Google Cloud. It also described Azure as more robust in the evaluated noise conditions. See the paper and its test context.

Word error rate (WER) counts transcription errors relative to the words in a reference transcript; lower is better. Those figures apply to the paper’s French material and test setup. They do not establish which current service performs best for another language, accent, microphone, background noise, vocabulary, or model version. The paper also does not establish a present-day ranking among the services.
Alternatives for generating a voice
Google Cloud Text-to-Speech
Google Cloud Text-to-Speech converts text into audio. Its product page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists more than 380 voices across more than 75 languages and variants, along with streaming and long-audio synthesis, SSML support, audio-format choices, and voice controls. These are vendor-listed catalog and feature details, so confirm that the specific voice and capability you want are available for your locale.

Google says its TTS billing is based on the characters sent for synthesis each month. The product page lists free monthly allowances of 1 million characters for WaveNet voices and 4 million for Standard voices. These allowances do not show which provider will cost less for your workload; check current pricing and the applicable region before estimating spend. See Google Cloud Text-to-Speech.
Amazon Polly
Amazon Polly provides text-to-speech with standard, neural, long-form, and generative engines. Its available languages and engine compatibility depend on the selected voice, so confirm both in AWS’s language documentation. The SynthesizeSpeech API reference documents plain text or SSML input, pronunciation lexicons, and outputs including MP3, Ogg Vorbis, Ogg Opus, PCM, μ-law, and A-law.

The documented options establish format and engine choices, not a comparative judgment about voice naturalness or current price. Listen to samples in your target locale and compare the cost for your actual use before selecting an engine.

How to choose and test a replacement
- Match the task. For transcription, compare speech-to-text services; for generated narration or application voice, compare text-to-speech services. If you need both, assess each part separately before evaluating the combined workflow.
- Check exact coverage. Verify the language and locale for the particular capability—not just the provider’s overall language list. For TTS, confirm the voice and engine; for STT, confirm the recognition feature and any live or batch workflow you require.
- Test representative material. Use the same recordings or text across candidates. Include the accents, noise, speaking styles, domain vocabulary, and recording quality you expect in production. For STT, compare output against a corrected reference transcript; for TTS, assess pronunciation and intelligibility with listeners familiar with the target language.
- Compare workflow and output requirements. Determine whether you need streaming or long-form processing, SSML, pronunciation controls, or a particular audio format. Validate the exact combination against current vendor documentation.
- Normalize total cost and deployment fit. Compare providers in their actual billing units and region, and include surrounding cloud, storage, and network costs where applicable. Separately verify regional availability, privacy, retention, and contractual terms with each vendor.
Which option should you try first?
For voice generation, Google Cloud Text-to-Speech and Amazon Polly are the strongest documented alternatives here: their current product documentation describes synthesis controls, voices or engines, and output options. For transcription, Google Cloud Speech-to-Text and Amazon Transcribe are reasonable candidates to test, but the quantitative comparison available is a 2021 French study—not evidence of current performance in your use case. Choose through a task- and locale-matched trial, not a universal ranking.
