If you want Southeast Asia exposure without relying on an Indonesia-only fund, the clearest one-ticket substitute is ASEA, which covers Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. It is not an equal-weight ASEAN fund: Singapore accounted for 45.41% of the portfolio in the issuer’s March 31, 2025 fact sheet. Income-focused investors can consider the SGX-listed UPD/UPU, while active ASEAN funds, broader emerging-Asia ETFs and a self-built basket of country funds suit different objectives.

The right choice depends on whether you value regional breadth, dividend distributions, manager selection, wider diversification or control over country weights. Fees, exchange access, currency line, liquidity, taxes and current holdings can matter as much as the fund name.

1. ASEA: the most direct one-ticket regional substitute

ASEA is designed to provide broad exposure to five Southeast Asian markets: Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. Its stated objective is to track, before fees and expenses, the FTSE/ASEAN 40 Index. The fund invests at least 80% of assets in securities economically tied to those markets, according to its SEC prospectus.

Current fund specifications

Specification Figure and date
Primary exchange NYSE Arca (Global X fund page, October 16, 2026)
Holdings 40 (October 16, 2026)
Total expense ratio 0.65% (October 16, 2026); the SEC prospectus reports 0.65% annual operating expenses
Inception February 16, 2011
Index FTSE/ASEAN 40 Index

The fund is a regional tool, but “regional” does not mean evenly distributed. The dated country weights below are essential for understanding what you actually own.

ASEA country weights are dominated by Singapore

Country Weight Source date
Singapore 45.41% Global X fact sheet, March 31, 2025
Thailand 18.01% Global X fact sheet, March 31, 2025
Indonesia 17.35% Global X fact sheet, March 31, 2025
Malaysia 15.34% Global X fact sheet, March 31, 2025
Philippines 3.89% Global X fact sheet, March 31, 2025

These weights show why ASEA is not a pure ex-Indonesia solution and not an equal ASEAN allocation. Singapore alone represented nearly half of the cited portfolio, while the Philippines was below 4%. The SEC filing also noted significant financial-sector and banking concentration as of December 31, 2025. Investors seeking technology, consumer or industrial exposure should inspect sector weights rather than assuming the five-country label guarantees broad sector diversification.

When ASEA makes sense

  • You want one listed security rather than several country funds.
  • You accept market-capitalization-style index exposure and Singapore concentration.
  • You can trade NYSE Arca and handle the fund’s trading currency and tax treatment in your jurisdiction.
  • You prefer a passive rules-based portfolio to a manager making security selections.

When ASEA may not fit

  • You specifically want to exclude Indonesia; Indonesia was 17.35% in the cited March 2025 fact sheet.
  • You need a high-distribution strategy rather than broad market exposure.
  • You want equal country weights or a large Philippines allocation.
  • You are sensitive to a 0.65% expense ratio, wider spreads or low trading volume relative to larger regional ETFs.

2. UPD and UPU: a dividend-oriented SGX route

UPD and UPU are two trading lines for the UOBAM Ping An FTSE ASEAN Dividend Index ETF. The fund seeks to replicate the FTSE ASEAN ex REITs Target Dividend Index. UPD trades in Singapore dollars and UPU trades in U.S. dollars; both lines are listed on the Singapore Exchange. UOBAM reported a January 29, 2026 listing date, a 0.45% annual management fee and 97 index constituents as of April 30, 2026.

What the target-dividend design changes

A dividend-screened index selects securities for income characteristics rather than simply representing the largest companies. That can produce a different country, sector and company mix from a broad ASEAN index. It may tilt toward mature companies and financial businesses, and it can lag a broad index when lower-yielding companies lead the market. The methodology, rebalance schedule and eligibility rules should be read in the current index documents.

Interpreting the headline yield

UOBAM and Bloomberg reported a 7.0% gross trailing yield for the target-dividend index versus 4.9% for the FTSE ASEAN Index, measured March 31, 2026. Those are historical index measurements, not a forecast of what an investor will receive from the ETF.

UOBAM’s product disclosure states: “Distributions are not guaranteed. Distributions may be made up of income, capital gains, and/or capital.” A distribution partly funded from capital can reduce the fund’s net asset value, so yield should be assessed alongside total return, distribution history, and the fund’s current net asset value.

Practical trade-offs of UPD versus UPU

Consideration UPD UPU
Trading currency SGD USD
Exchange SGX SGX
Underlying index FTSE ASEAN ex REITs Target Dividend Index
Management fee 0.45% per year, according to UOBAM
Distribution certainty Not guaranteed; distributions may include income, capital gains and/or capital

The SGD and USD lines represent currency choices for trading, not a guarantee that the underlying companies earn revenue in that currency. Your return can still be affected by movements in the Singapore dollar, U.S. dollar and the local currencies of the portfolio companies.

3. Active ASEAN funds: paying for security selection

JPMorgan ASEAN Equity is described as an actively managed fund seeking long-term capital growth by investing primarily in companies from ASEAN member countries. Unlike ASEA’s index-tracking mandate, an active manager can choose which countries, sectors and companies to emphasize and can hold positions that differ substantially from an index.

What active management can add

  • The manager can underweight a country judged expensive or vulnerable and overweight a market viewed as attractive.
  • Security research can focus on company balance sheets, governance, earnings and local competitive conditions.
  • The portfolio may avoid some index constituents or hold fewer, higher-conviction positions.

What you give up

  • Fees and dealing terms may be higher or more complex than an exchange-traded index fund; the available product description does not state a current fee.
  • Results depend on manager decisions, personnel and process, not only on ASEAN market performance.
  • Purchase, redemption and valuation may occur on a fund dealing schedule rather than continuously during exchange hours.
  • Country and sector concentration can be greater than the label “ASEAN” suggests.

Before choosing an active fund, read its latest prospectus for ongoing charges, minimum investment, dealing frequency, benchmark, performance fee (if any), distribution policy and share-class currency.

4. GMF: broaden beyond ASEAN to reduce regional dependence

GMF is an option when your real objective is emerging-Asia diversification rather than a narrowly defined ASEAN allocation. Its mandate reaches emerging Asia-Pacific countries outside the five markets represented by ASEA, so it can dilute dependence on Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Broader geography changes the risk profile rather than removing risk. Additional countries introduce different political systems, currencies, market-access rules, accounting practices and correlations. State Street’s factsheet warns that the holdings and sector figures shown are as of a stated date and subject to change; always record that date when comparing GMF with another fund.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use GMF when your priority is breadth

  • You want ASEAN exposure as one component of a wider emerging-Asia allocation.
  • You are comfortable owning countries that are not in an ASEAN index.
  • You prefer reducing single-country dependence over maximizing the purity of an ASEAN mandate.

GMF is a poor match if your investment policy requires only Southeast Asian companies or if you need a specific income methodology. Confirm the current country list, sector weights, expense ratio, assets and spread from the latest factsheet.

5. Build your own basket with country ETFs

A modular approach uses separate country funds such as the iShares MSCI Thailand ETF (THD), iShares MSCI Malaysia ETF (EWM) and iShares MSCI Philippines ETF (EPHE). Combining them can provide targeted exposure while omitting Indonesia entirely, or you can add an Indonesia fund at a weight you set yourself.

Advantages of a custom basket

  • You choose the exact countries and approximate weights.
  • You can increase a market that is small in a regional index, such as the Philippines’ 3.89% weight in the cited ASEA fact sheet.
  • You can exclude Indonesia or any other country without selling the rest of the portfolio.
  • You can set a rebalancing policy that matches your risk tolerance.

Costs and risks of doing it yourself

  • Each ETF has its own expense ratio, bid-ask spread, trading hours and possible creation or redemption constraints.
  • Multiple orders create more commissions or platform charges where applicable.
  • Country weights drift as markets move; maintaining targets requires periodic rebalancing and additional trades.
  • You must monitor three issuers, three sets of holdings and three tax documents instead of one.
  • Combining funds can accidentally recreate a concentrated exposure to banks, commodities or state-linked companies.

There is no universally correct rebalance interval. A calendar schedule, a tolerance-band rule or a combination of both can work, but document the rule before markets move so decisions are not driven solely by recent performance.

How to compare these choices before buying

1. Define the exposure you actually want

Write down whether the goal is broad five-country ASEAN exposure, income, active selection, wider emerging Asia or a country-specific basket. “Southeast Asia” is not a portfolio specification until you decide which countries and how much concentration you can accept.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Check the index or mandate

Read the methodology, eligible countries, security-count limits, reconstitution dates, foreign-ownership restrictions and treatment of cash. A fund can carry an ASEAN name while excluding REITs, favoring high-dividend shares or holding companies listed outside their home country.

  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

3. Record dated country and sector weights

Copy the factsheet date beside every weight. ASEA’s March 31, 2025 figures demonstrate why this matters: the five-country label concealed a 45.41% Singapore allocation and a 3.89% Philippines allocation. Current weights may differ materially.

4. Compare the complete cost of ownership

  • Expense ratio or management fee.
  • Bid-ask spread and typical trading volume.
  • Brokerage commission, custody fee and foreign-exchange charge.
  • Fund-level withholding taxes and your own country’s tax treatment.
  • Premium or discount to net asset value, especially for less-liquid listings.

5. Confirm exchange and currency access

ASEA trades on NYSE Arca. UPD and UPU trade on SGX in SGD and USD respectively. Your broker may support one exchange but not the other, and eligibility can depend on your domicile, account type and local investor-protection rules. Trading currency does not eliminate the currency risk of the underlying holdings.

6. Inspect distribution policy

For an income strategy, check the record date, payment frequency, trailing distributions, ex-distribution price behavior and whether distributions can include capital. UPD/UPU’s 7.0% historical gross index yield is not a guaranteed ETF payout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Review liquidity at the time of order

Use limit orders when spreads are wide, avoid judging liquidity from a single day and check the quoted size on both sides of the market. A low expense ratio does not compensate for consistently expensive execution.

Risk factors common to every route

None of these structures removes emerging-market risk. Political changes, capital controls, regulatory shifts, governance concerns, commodity cycles, banking stress and abrupt currency moves can affect several ASEAN markets simultaneously. Foreign investors can also face restrictions on ownership, settlement or repatriation.

Country diversification reduces reliance on one economy but does not guarantee lower volatility. Singapore’s large weight in ASEA means a regional holding can still behave differently from an equal ASEAN basket. A dividend screen can concentrate in mature, high-yield sectors, while a broader emerging-Asia fund can introduce risks from countries that are absent from an ASEAN-only mandate.

A practical decision framework

If your priority is… Start by examining… Main question to answer
One-ticket ASEAN breadth ASEA Can you accept Singapore and financial-sector concentration?
Income orientation UPD or UPU Can you access SGX, and do you understand that distributions are not guaranteed?
Manager judgment JPMorgan ASEAN Equity Are the active fees, dealing terms and manager process worth the potential deviation from an index?
Wider Asia diversification GMF Do you want non-ASEAN countries in the same fund?
Control over country weights THD, EWM and EPHE combination Will you maintain and rebalance several positions consistently?

Buying checklist

  1. Confirm the fund’s latest prospectus, factsheet and index methodology.
  2. Write down the publication date for every fee, holding and yield figure.
  3. Check your broker’s access to NYSE Arca or SGX and verify the permitted share class.
  4. Estimate currency-conversion, commission and custody costs in addition to the fund fee.
  5. Review current country and sector weights, not just the fund’s marketing description.
  6. Decide in advance how you will handle distributions and rebalance a multi-fund basket.
  7. Verify domicile-specific tax, withholding and reporting obligations with an appropriate professional.
  8. Use a limit order when the spread or displayed depth is unattractive, and recheck the quote before submitting.
