If you want to build a conventional game and learn how it works, start with GDevelop: its visual event system lets beginners create game logic without writing code, and it includes an AI tutor and learning resources. For fast prompt-to-game experiments within Roblox, try Roblox Build if you meet its age requirements and it is available in your region. Choose Roblox Studio or Unity if you want to learn scripting and a broader editor workflow. Google’s Project Genie is different: Google describes it as an experimental way to generate interactive worlds, not a conventional game engine.

Which alternative should a beginner choose?

Tool Best for What you’ll work with
GDevelop Making a small, conventional game while learning Visual events, tutorials, and an AI tutor
Roblox Build Quickly generating a simple game for Roblox Prompts and Roblox’s 2D or 2.5D formats
Roblox Studio Assistant Building within Roblox with more editing control Studio tools and Luau scripting
Unity with Unity AI Learning a full game-development environment Unity editor workflows, coding assistance, and asset-generation tools
Project Genie Experimenting with generated interactive worlds Text- and image-prompted world generation; it is experimental, not a standard engine workflow

These are different kinds of tools, not interchangeable versions of the same product. The amount of learning involved depends on what you build and is not a measured ranking.

GDevelop: the strongest starting point for learning game logic

GDevelop is the closest fit if your goal is to make a conventional small game without beginning with programming syntax. Its visual event system lets you define how objects and game conditions behave. The official site also describes an AI tutor, in-app courses, and beginner tutorials, so you can use assistance while learning how a project is put together. See GDevelop’s official site.

This is a better match than a prompt-only generator when you want to revise a game through an editor and understand the logic behind it. Start with a modest project—such as a platformer, maze, or score-based arcade game—and add features as you become comfortable with events. Check GDevelop’s current platform support, publishing options, and plan details on its site; those features and terms can change.

Roblox Build: prompt-first creation for simple Roblox games

Roblox Build is designed for a quick start: describe a game and iterate within Roblox’s creation workflow. Roblox documentation says its current focus is simpler 2D and 2.5D formats, including clickers, arcade, collect-and-score, side-scroller, and puzzle games. It does not currently establish general 3D game generation as a supported Build capability. Check Roblox’s Build documentation.

Access is limited: Roblox says Build requires an age-checked account for someone aged 9 or older, and availability depends on regional rollout. Its July 2026 announcement said public alpha would begin in New Zealand, with broader rollout over subsequent months; that announcement is not a guarantee of current availability in any particular region. Check Roblox’s live documentation and feature access before planning a project around it. Read Roblox’s July 2026 announcement.

Build is most useful when speed and a Roblox destination matter more than learning a general-purpose editor. If you edit a Build game in Roblox Studio, Roblox says that version becomes a standard Studio game and loses its Build status. Roblox explains the status change in its Build documentation.

Roblox Studio Assistant: a step toward scripting

Choose Roblox Studio if you want to go beyond prompt-driven creation while staying on Roblox. Roblox says its Assistant can create 3D objects, write and run Luau, generate meshes and materials, and playtest. These capabilities make it a more extensible editor workflow than Build, but they also mean there is more to learn: you will be working with Studio and, for scripted behavior, Luau.

Beginners can pair the tools with Roblox’s core curriculum for building and scripting an obby, a type of obstacle-course game. See the Roblox Assistant overview and Roblox’s learning resources.

Unity with Unity AI: for beginners ready to learn a full engine

Unity is the more involved choice here. It suits a learner who wants to understand a full game-development environment rather than rely on a no-code event system or a prompt-to-game flow. Unity’s May 5, 2026 announcement described Unity AI as an open beta for Unity 6.0 or later, with an in-editor assistant, AI Gateway, and MCP Server. Check current availability and requirements because beta status can change. Read Unity’s May 5, 2026 announcement.

Unity documentation lists AI-assisted generation for sprites, textures, materials, sounds, animations, and terrain layers, as well as coding assistance and runtime inference. These features support a broader editor workflow, but do not remove the need to learn how an engine project is organized. Unity’s earlier Muse product is separate and deprecated; it is not the name of the current Unity AI suite. See Unity’s Unity AI documentation.

How Project Genie differs from these alternatives

Project Genie is not simply another beginner game engine. Google calls it an experimental prototype for generating interactive worlds from text and images. That makes it useful for exploring an idea or an interactive environment, but the product description does not establish it as a conventional workflow for building and publishing a finished game. Google’s own warning is direct: “Project Genie is still experimental.” Read Google Labs Help.

Google’s current help page says Project Genie is available only to Google AI Ultra subscribers, requires users to be at least 18, and is limited to places where Ultra is offered. Google also warns about possible latency, control problems, changes in streaming quality, and imperfect adherence to prompts, uploaded images, or real-world physics. Confirm current eligibility and availability in Google’s help page before relying on access.

A practical path from first game to more control

  1. Pick the result you want. For a game project you can shape through visual logic, begin with GDevelop. For a quick, simple Roblox game, check whether Build is available to you. For deeper Roblox editing, use Studio; for a full engine, choose Unity.
  2. Keep the first project small. Make one playable loop—a character movement, a clear objective, and a win or loss condition—before adding more systems. This keeps the learning focused on the tool’s core workflow.
  3. Use assistance to learn, not only to generate. In GDevelop, explore how an event produces a result. In Studio or Unity, inspect and test generated scripts or assets rather than treating them as finished, unexplained components.
  4. Check access before committing. Project Genie, Roblox Build, and Unity AI have stated eligibility, rollout, or beta qualifications. Verify the current terms from their official pages linked above.
